Guestiquette: A Handbook for Horrible Houseguests

Rate this book
Can you stay at your ex's place without things getting weird? And how do you properly apologize to your host for tequila-fueled bad behavior? Fear not! Guestiquette has the answers.

Guestiquette is the first book that takes on the complicated world of being a houseguest, offering useful, irreverent, and hilarious advice for guests and hosts. Not sure how to deal with a Schnauzer that hates you or what to do if a zombie apocalypse breaks out while you're staying at someone's home? Guestiquette has you covered.

In addition to advice, this book has fun illustrations, charts, lists, and even a recipe, that celebrate the houseguest experience. You'll also find true first-person stories from hosts and houseguests who were brave enough to share their often cringe-inducing tales, including vivid recounts of a honeymoon spent in the wrong house and a Thanksgiving dinner that would have given Martha Stewart nightmares.

Everyone who has ever been a houseguest or a host has encountered issues they're not exactly sure how to handle. Finally, there's a book for most every situation that offers help for even the most horrible houseguest.

3.5 stars, rounded up. 3 stars as a sit-and-actively-read-this book. 4 stars as a sit-on-the-coffee-table-and-read-over-the-course-of-a-year book.

This was a very cute read and I loved the humor. I very much enjoyed the format of the book, which included sections of advice/etiquette, short passages of real life stories from others, and infographics/illustrations. Despite having the other components to break up the etiquette part of the book, it unfortunately still felt a bit repetitive as the book went on. At roughly a third of the way through, it started to feel like, “yeah, I get it.”

That said, I think it was all very well written and clever in its humor. To more thoroughly enjoy the entire book, I think it would need to be consumed over a longer period of time with long breaks between chapters. Would be a fun houseguest or host gift (if it could be given without seeming too pointed).

I would like to thank NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Though there is some practical advice here, this book is played mostly for laughs - and it gets them.
From tales of nightmare visitors who cause fires to pop quizzes like "Farrow & Ball Guest Room Color or Sting Song?" this is an enjoyable book for both guests and hosts. I particularly liked the story of the British gent who attempted to recreate the perfect Thanksgiving for a visiting American friend by following the teachings of Martha Stewart.
It's a good thing.

Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the read.

Having been both a host and a guest, I can attest to the accuracy of this book. And as a fan of humour, I can attest that this book is funny and at times, laugh-out-loud funny. The anecdotes were great and the illustrations very cute. The acknowledgements were also worth reading. Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advance reader copy.
