Wataru Nadatani’s hilarious manga series is translated by Zack Davisson (Demon Days, The Supernatural Cats of Japan) and lettered by Susie Lee of Studio Cutie.
✨Writing a grouped review for the volumes published and read at the time of writing (volumes1-6). As it's been a few months since I read them and don't remember specifics other than ratings ✨
The dichotomy of this series is that it is simultaneously great and not-so-great for the exact same reason.
It's cat manga.
It's cute, it's wholesome, it's like a warm hug and each volume is a super quick read. But, there is nothing really of substance here.
4.5 stars. I just love this series. Any cat owner should be able to relate to the cute and ridiculous things that the kittens Musubi and Soboro get up to. The older I get, the more I appreciate slice of life serials...
Cats are going to cat, but Musubi and Soboro’s various habits remain filtered through Kozakura’s gamer mindset. From fighting to the zoomies and constant shedding, it’s more antics than you can chase a stick at.
This is a strong volume of a typically fun series and I had a legit, honest, and very loud bark of laughter in the aftermath of the gacha story that opens up this volume. Giving Musubi and Soboro human dialogue/thoughts may have removed some realism, but when the upside is jokes like that first bonus manga? I’ll take that trade.
(And anthropomorphic or not, their reactions to Kozakura absolutely nail the fickle nature of a cat.)
Sometimes this series has struggled to balance its two aspects without being annoying, but there’s no such issue here. Just enough cat, just enough gaming. It’s fun and cute and pretty charming.
The moment the cats go viral for is hilarious and something you could absolutely imagine doing so with very little effort. It also slips in a very sly dig at the ephemeral nature of online fame and the reality that the internet is mostly concerned about cats.
Those are probably the two best stories, but most of the others are also good. There’s a distinct focus on the sheer amount of damage and chaos two cats can cause in a household, explored in both an amusing dungeon adventure and a parody of Mario Kart that works really well with a case of the zoomies.
One of the nicer touches is how Musubi and Soboro are quickly developing distinct personalities of their own. One is a water cat, one is not. One likes treats just a bit more. Depressingly, this has better characterization than the last shojo I read.
There have definitely been ups and downs with this series and, thankfully, this is one of the up volumes. The majority of the stories are at least okay and several are very good to excellent. A strong batch this time out.
4 stars - cute cats continue to be cute and that is a story I can happily get behind.
Cat + Gamer Volume 5 was another amazing addition to the Cat + Gamer manga series following Riko as she settles into life with two cats.
Office worker Riko Kozakura and her feline companions Musubi and Soboro spend their days full of adventures. With new challenges awaiting them each day, Riko, Musubi, and Soboro will need to level up their skills to be the best adventurers around.
This manga continues to be fantastic and has been cemented as one of my favorites. After adopting Soboro in the previous volume, Riko is learning her quirks and discovering she's quite different from Musubi at times. One of those moments, which was highly entertaining, was when Riko went to give Soboro her first bath and learned she hated the water unlike Musubi who really enjoys it. We also got quite a few moments where the two cats would copy each other and I liked that they had some similarities. Like several of the previous volumes, we got bonus scenes from Musubi and Soboro's points of view. Their thoughts about Riko and her antics were quite entertaining and I enjoyed getting to see what they get up to when Riko isn't around. These scenes are some of my favorite parts of the series and they get better in each book.
Overall Cat + Gamer Volume 5 was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to picking up volume 6 soon.

I love this series, watching cats be cats and get up to very recognisable antics, with plenty of gaming parallels thrown in. In this volume, our furry friends encounter the automatic feeder (the greed sensor), the horrors of the household dungeon (not like that, it’s all very wholesome) and its various bosses, and become social media superstars. If you’re cat person or gamer, you’ll see yourself and your friends here!
I'm liking that we're now getting more chapters from the point of view of Musubi and Soboro- the author portrays the kitties' thoughts perfectly, and I love how they act so realistic too. Riko Kozakura is still so relatable, her love of gaming knows no bounds, and I still adore the way she combines video game logic with real life hehe!
This volume brings Riku and her cats into the fall time of year. I had a lot of fun reading about Riku learning to navigate the waters of having two cats. One cat is nice, two are fun and exciting. Musubi and Soboru are full of all kinds of cuteness and trouble in the latest volume.
I love that there have been more scenes from the cat’s perspectives. I also really like the comparisons between gaming and taking care of cats. This is one of the best slice of life series I have ever read.
Soboro and Musubi are up to their usual tricks! This time involves a bath! I love how well the author captures the fun of the kitties, their playful yet loving side and also their mischievous sides too!
Great cartoons, relatable and I don't want this series to end!
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani (Vol 3-5) Writing: A Art: A Story: A- Characters: A Setting: A- Best Aspect: All 3 are a lot of fun. This is fun series. Worst Aspect: The sections where the cats ‘talk’ could be a little longer. Recommend: Yes.
That was so cute! Even the cats are showing more personality and expressions with this volume! I didn't catch a lot of videogame references, but that's okay--it was still very enjoyable!
