An incredibly interesting book made up of lots of random facts. Here are a handful of the more interesting ones from the 1000s in the book which you may find interesting: • The passion fruit was named as such by Spanish missionaries who believed when cut in half the fruit looked like the crown of thorns on Christs heads and hence represented his passion. • The numbers 11 and 12 in the English language come from the Anglo Saxon for one-left (aend-lefene) and two-left (twa-lefene) which represents the act of going back to your left hand and starting counting again once you have gone past 10 on both your hands. • The name California was taken from a 16th century novel called the exploits of esplaidian. In the book it describes as an imaginary Amazonian island ruled by black women. • You may sign off your texts and emails to loved ones and friends (and occasionally accidentally work colleagues!) with xxxxxxxs. The origin of this is when in the past people couldn’t sign their names on documents so they would just put xs instead. To show their sincerity they would then kiss their marks.
