Rate this book
On the island of Eshol, a ruling council gifts magic to all its citizens whether they want it or not.Eighteen-year-old Rayna Drey should be excited for her Branding, when the island’s Good Council will infuse her blood with one of five sanctioned the ability to wield elements, summon objects, shift forms, talk to wildlife, or manipulate minds. The Good Council is good. The Branding doesn’t hurt. And the institution she must attend afterward, to learn how to control her new gift, is only a little dangerous.Or, at least, that’s what Rayna has always heard. As soon as she arrives at the Esholian Institute, however, a peer-pressured dare makes her explode with a power as deadly as it is forbidden. Worse yet, the only one who can teach her how to hide it from the Good Council is Coen Steeler, a much-too-handsome fifth-year who can manipulate minds as easily as he breathes. He alone understands Rayna’s forbidden power…because he has the same one. With their secret in each other’s hands, Rayna soon uncovers other dark secrets that threaten the very foundation of the island itself. And the worst of them? If the Good Council finds out what lurks in her and Coen’s blood, they’ll both face a fate beyond obedience — and a punishment worse than death.

So let’s start off with three problems I have now.

1. Pentaball is not a real sport that we’re playing yet.
2. This book is not yet a hard copy that is gracing my book shelves.
3. Rodhi is not real and cannot be my friend in real life.

But for real - I did not just read this book, I DEVOURED it.

The magic system was so interesting in that you’re granted it later in life, whether you want it or not. Everyone begins on an even playing-field, which is so good once you see how they favour certain aspects of their magic (like we see with Fungus - darn autocorrect - I mean Fergus). And the twists and turns were so good and well-weaved within the story, you could not tell what was going to happen, which I just loved!

The world building was also just great - it was easy to follow and brought enough clarity to the story that I didn’t have to keep going back to check the map to understand what we needed to follow. Unfortunately some stories try to create an entire new realm and end up confusing you more, but what Mariah gave us was magical and still easy to absorb! I cannot wait to see how the outside world comes into play in the next books.

I loved the characters that Mariah has written. They were so well done and extremely believable to how people would act while they’re still finding their way and themselves. Nothing was far-fetched.

I really recommend this if you want an entertaining light-hearted read, where at the end you wish you were a part of Rayna’s crew.

SOLID 5/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book had me in a CHOKEHOLD! I received this as an e-arc and spent the last 48 hours completely DEVOURING this beautiful story. I could not put it down. I lost sleep.

Mariah outdid herself with this one. It’s absolutely incredible. The magic system was so unique and well thought out just plain fascinating! The world building was… chefs kiss. Seriously, it was so intricate and detailed that I could actually imagine every scene and facet of the institute and world in my mind and become completely immersed in it - but at the same time it was extremely easy to follow and understand.

The plot twists and turns kept me on my toes and screaming at my book several times! I did not see what was coming! The whole story and foreshadowing was so well executed!!

The characters had so much depth and were completely believable in all of their actions. I was living for the relationship between the MMC and MFC! I was hanging in every moment and every word.

But the ending…???? Please tell me she writes fast because I NEED more, more, more! And fast! I will definitely be buying a physical copy of this book as my shelf trophy and to re-read!

If you haven’t added this to your TBR yet, I highly recommend!

I had the pleasure of reading this book as an ARC and I'm so incredibly grateful I did because I love this book with my entire being.

First and foremost I want to preface this review by saying how upset and frustrated I am that this book isn't even published yet, which means that 1) I can't have this beautiful cover on my very real bookshelf, and 2) I have to wait.... how long? Until the next one! I'm distraught over this.

By the Orchid and the Owl is nothing less than a masterpiece. I DEVOURED this book in its entirety. The world Mariah has created is so captivating, I can't wait to see what she does next.

The world-building, the magic system, the plot lines, the characters - all were perfect. Coen has officially been added to the book boyfriends registry. I have not one complaint about this book. It will continue to live in my head rent-free, just like it has since I picked it up.

By the Orchid and the Owl deserves infinite /5⭐️.
I will be (not) patiently waiting for the sequel.

I LOVED this book!!! It was everything I didn’t know I needed. I don’t read a lot of romantasy and now I’m questioning why I don’t.

At eighteen, Rayna leaves her hometown to join the Institute to learn magic for the next five years. But everything is not what it seems, of course, after she meets Coen.

The world-building was perfection, the writing was amazing, the plot is incredibly intriguing, and the characters were to die for - also, someone tell me why I haven’t been reading books with mind-to-mind communication between the two MCs because SWOOOOOON.

My only gripe is now I have to wait for the second book to come out.

*I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.*

I got this book as an ARC to read. I will definitely be buying it as well! The cover is beautiful and this book was very good!! I can't wait for the rest of the series!

This book is a bit of dystopia, magic, and even a little romance! I can not wait to find out what happens next!

Would, and will, definitely recommend this book!!

Can I give a book 6 stars? This was an absolutely delicious main course of fantasy with one of the sexiest romances I’ve come across in a LONG time. As much as I hate to compare books, considering the hype around the ones I will mention I think it’s relevant.

Did you love the mind talking in Fourth Wing but wish it was sexier? Did you hate the miscommunication in Iron Flame and wish that if it was there it’s there for a reason, rather than for the sake of continuous conflict throughout the whole thing?

Did you love Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and want some fun games and trials but make it more adult with an extremely cool and unique magic system? Do you like Fae worlds with organic world building that makes sense to come along incrementally as we learn about the world with our main characters?

Last, but most importantly - do you love the nickname “Little Hurricane”? If so - please read on.

This book absolutely blew me away. Two friends of mine recommended this to me and I could not be more glad that they did. I went in blind and did not want this book to end. The characters are all beautifully crafted and complex, the world is vibrant and the magic is unique. I never felt like I was lacking context on anything, everything felt well paced and intentional and I LOVED the fact this book wasn’t enemies to lovers (though maybe book two will be 👀) as as much as I do love it as a trope I feel like it’s in almost every book I pick up. If you love all the TikTok darlings, or even more so if you have been let down by the TikTok darlings let this book take you in and give you everything you’ve been craving. I cannot see a time soon where I will not be raving about By the Orchid and the Owl.

ARC REVIEW

First of all the author is a sweetheart ! 🥰
This book is freaking amazing and a masterpiece!
I devoured this book and read until 4am because I couldn’t put it down! I need the physical copy like right now!!!!! It‘s one of this book you want to finish because it’s so absorbing but don’t want to finish because you don’t want it to end sooo I’m really excited for the next books in this series!

Loved the world building and how we got to know everything and how easy it was to follow the events.
The magic system is soo interesting.
It was sooo cozy at some parts and sooo interesting to see Rayna learn everything! Coen is such an amazing and protective book boyfriend and I loved their relationship and how it developed and all their moments. I WAS GIGGLING AND LAUGHING AND 😍🔥🔥🔥🔥 AT SO MANY POINTS THROUGH THE BOOK.. All the twists and turns in this book are written amazing and so exciting and captivating to read about!

All the animals and friendships in this book are so freaking beautiful and amazing and you could feel their connection 🥹 it was so believable how the characters acted because nobody is perfect and they had to find themselves in this magical world and to comprehend everything that was happening.

This book is a must read and so captivating with everything happening and I’m so excited for the other books that will follow. Mariah did an amazing and beautiful job with this book!

I haven’t read a book like this since I read fourth wing last year - this book is worthy of a blow up just like it. I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again and when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it constantly.

It’s gripping, fast paced, entertaining and magical.
Comparisons to other books would be if divergent had magic and instead of hogwarts the school was set on an island but that doesn’t come close to how unique and fabulous this book was.

Reyna joins the good institute as per every other 18 year old on the island of Eshol to be imbued with one of five different types of magic and to learn to control it and pass a mysterious test at the end of five years. The magic she was given would have been my choice so I was over the moon when it was revealed.

There she meets new friends and a swoon worthy 5th year who is a like a mash up of four from divergent and Xayden from fourth wing. Aswell as magical lessons in her given magic she is also learning more about her parentage and origins of the island. Throw in a tiger and hints of fairies and vampires this is a rollercoaster of a story.

I love Reyna and Coen and all the friends they make - very likeable and well developed side characters.

The ending - what was that - I was screaming no at my book as I realised I was at the end - I need book 2 like yesterday 😂.

Thank you so much to the author for giving me an advance copy of the ebook - this is definitely making my top ten reads of the year.

I am an ARC reader for Mariah Montoya

Wow I mean ... Just wow. This is probably one of the best books I've read in a while. Intrigue, loyalty, a little bit of divergent in the beginning. Animals of all kinds, Betrayal and forgotten betrayal. It was amazing! I don't generally like it when m FMC forgets past events (or lives) but this book was so good I hardly even noticed. I will definitely be waiting for the second book and hating myself for reading this so early. lol

amazing plot line
amazing romance
good flowing story
wonderful animal friends

Unique, unexpected, well-thought out and well-paced storyline and characters. I started out reading books about magical education and this is a great adult version for anyone else who did too.

I totally related to Rayna, the MC, especially when she showed up at school and was struggling with leaving the past behind and coming to some tough realizations. I haven't read anything like that in a book before, though many people have probably experienced it too.

And that cover?! Stunning! 4.5/5.

Received the e-book as an ARC for an honest review. All I can say is, wow. I am so happy my gorgeous friend Kelsey connected me with the chance to read this ARC as I INHALED THIS BOOK. Everything I loved. The world building, the magic systems, the lore, the characters, the relationships, the creatures. Everything I ate up and started /finished the book in the same day.

If you love Harry Potter world, with a dabble of Fourth Wing, whimsy like Tress of the Emerald Sea, then some awesome magical world building, like ACOTAR, sassy and loveable talking animals, a hot and spicy MMC, then this is for you.

This story tells the story of our FMC, Reyna, who, at 18 years old, joins the Esholian Institute (which every 18 year old does). There, she is branded with one of five different types of magic, and across the next five years, he needs to learn to control and master it. Every quarter, there are progress tests leading up to the ultimate in year 5, which decides your fate. I was surprised and delighted by the magic she was given, but thinking of it, it would have been my choice too, haha.

During her first day, Reyna meets new friends and your new book boyfriend, Coen, a 5th year who has elements of Rhysand, Xaden, and Four in him. This book follows her first year, her struggles with a new school, being away from home, learning about a whole new world, and the historu of her island. As well as this, there is a king tiger, some weird as heck vampire bars, fae appear throughout and pirates?! This is a roller coaster of a book, and i'm here for the ride.

The relationships are all really well developed, as well as the characters. The friendships between the humans and characters are loveable and delightful.

You will laugh, cry, swoon, and also want to throw rocks as the oily boy in this book

I'm so sad it's not a standalone as I can't wait for book 2. You must read this.

Where do I begin? I loved this book!! I received it as an ARC and it wholeheartedly captivated me. If you like romantasy with faeries, found family, academia, the whole touch her and you ☠️ trope, and lots of world building then you’re going to love this book! Think Fourth Wing meets Divergent but with lots of unique twists🤪 The way the characters were written made them feel real and I genuinely felt attached to their story. I loved, loved, loved Coen and Rayna. Every one of their friends were amazing additions to the story line and also felt real. I’m so upset I read this as an ARC since I’m going to have to wait for Mariah to write the next book😩🫶🏼 However, it will 100% be worth the wait!!! I honestly had a few predictions for the ending as the book went on but genuinely didn’t see it ending the way it did. It was so, so, so well written and I can’t wait to read Mariah’s other books! I’ll even be buying this book in paperback when it’s released to own a physical copy for my bookshelf🤭

Okay I really had to unpack this! It was such a beautiful book!
Usually takes me a few chapters in to get hooked but Mariah had me hooked after chapter 1!
Instantly felt connected to Rayna Drey and her wee group of pals! you can tell they are making friends for life in that school!
The rapport with the other characters is so diverse that you really feel yourself immersed in the book.
There are many incredible quotes that make you fall in love with the MMC and FMC.
This is a unique tale and the cliff hanger has me in a chokehold ready for the next books!!
10/10 will be recommending till the day I die.

I’m obsessed! This book is one of my new favorites. I cannot wait for the next one to come out! And I hope there’s several more!!

The characters were great. I loved the main couple and hated the enemies.

If you like dystopian books and romance you have to read this one. There’s magic, mind reading, love, betrayal, good vs evil…. What more could you want!

As soon as this book is published I will add it to my collection! Also how beautiful is that cover!!

3.91⭐️. This was a cozy, Harry Potter-esque book. The magic is cute, and it’s not overly “spicy.” The plot kind of drags on, but it’s worth it at the end. I’m curious to see how it all unfolds, but not enough to pick up Book 2 quite yet.

This book was so easy to binge read!!! I read it in two days and am in love. All of the main characters and side characters drew me in for different reasons (even the ones I hated!!) and the overall plot was so easy to get lost in. I loved the found family vibes, the tension, the magic school vibes, everything!! Can’t believe I now need to wait for the next book to see what happens next, I will be waiting impatiently!!!

So grateful that the author provided me with an eARC in return for an honest review.

Thank you to Mariah for asking me to be an ARC reader for this book! All opinions are my own!

This book very very quickly became a favorite of mine this year. This book was so insanely good. From the world building to the characters to the relationships between the characters to all the animals this book was so beautifully crafted and it needs to be talked about more!! Also I feel like this would be SUCH a good book to make into a movie!

One thing I really want to highlight was how much I loved there being a theme of learning to let go of people and relationships that are no longer good for us. People might have been our best friends but sometimes people change and drift and that’s okay! That just means there is an opportunity to find new people who ARE good for us!

Rayna was such a good FMC! She always puts her friends and those she loves first and will do whatever it takes to protect them. She is fierce and determined to get the answers to all the questions she has about herself and her families past. I loved seeing her find a sense of found family at the institution. Seeing her and Emelle’s friendship blossom really made my heart so happy throughout the story! Her relationship with Coen had so many ups and downs but over all had me swooning and left me wanting more (especially after that ending!). I can’t wait to see what comes next for her in this series!

Now COEN STEELER LADIES AND GENTLEMAN! This man is protective and loved Rayna so passionately and unapologetically. He would do anything for her and even when they had their moments it was so evident he would always be there for her. He was always a mystery and even when you thought you had him figured out another puzzle piece was revealed. I truly can’t wait to see what’s next for him (ESPECIALLY AFTER THE ENDING).

I apologize for my yelling about the ending… but also if you read this you’d understand🥲

If you’re a hunger games, fourth wing, Harry Potter fan, you NEED to read this! Truly you will not regret it!

By the Orchid and owl is not just a pretty cover. This book was INCREDIBLE. oh my god. If Harry potter and fourth wing had a baby and it's uncle was acotar, this would be it. The world building, the magic system, the side characters?! Absolutely incredible. The main characters? Super relatable and Coen can get it!

It deserves every one of these stars as it absolutely rocked my socks off. I am UNWELL with the ending and I only wish Mariah could write as fast as I devoured this book because I need book two ASAP.

Thank you to Mariah for fitting me in as a last minute arc reader. I'm so incredibly happy to have read this book. 💕 All opinions are my own.

Ok so this was interesting but I didn’t exactly love it. The world-building and imagery was probably the best part for me, I liked the role the animals played and the plot was pretty unique (like Harry Potter x hunger games).

The romance was very mid, it was instalove so definitely not my favourite- I wasn’t feeling the mmc, he was just a bit meh.

Spice 1🌶️

Not sure if I’ll continue the series💫

This book had me kicking, giggling and screaming. It absolutely blew me away. I felt so immersed in the world of Eshol and all the magic.

I was so on edge with Coen and Rayna trying to discover more about their magic and roots. It was simultaneously exciting and cozy. The magic was so cool and tun to read about.

I think this book is best read with little to no previous knowledge and to just dive right in. You won't be disappointed. It's so well done and I never wanted it to end. I'm so happy there's going to be a whole series and can't wait to get back to Eshol again!!

This book was good. What really convinced me was the world building and the plot. A council who does bad things- sign me up. The whole institute and the different powers and houses reminded me of some other fantasy books. Still, the author made her own thing.
The first 20% reminded me strongly of Divergent, which had me intrigued.
The characters are one for themselves. I‘m not fully convinced for them being together. At the same time Rayna was kind of naive and annoying, which I hated.

Justice for the lack of mention of Rhodi at the end 🤺
My statement leads me to the next point, the romance of the side characters was far more interesting than the main one…I said what I said.

And still, the plot made up for my dislike for the characters🧘‍♀️

Oh and by the way, this book is no young adult. Why are we marketing this as one🫵

Two stars. This book really had a potential. I liked it to an extent, but i can't help but feel that the plot was poorly executed.

What i like in the book:
1. Lander
2. The overall concept, especially the wild whispering

What i didn't like:
1. Insta lust. Like, come on. A fifth year had no business with a first year 😭 and right the first time they saw each other, too. I understand that they had to interact closely considering the weekly pills, but i hoped they built up to the attraction rather than getting slammed with their "chemistry" right from the get-go.
2. Rayna. She wasn't that bad, but her characterization really declined for me as the book went on. It didn't help that she's also a Mary Sue kinda character when it comes to her power/abilities. I don't mind Mary Sues, but they had to have great characters for it to work for me. I especially don't like her relationships with the other characters. To Coen, Emelle, etc. Her saving grace is that I like that she's a wild whisperer and actually has a mouse friend and a spider friend. Istg, she's a different person before she stepped foot in the institute 😭
3. Quinn. Her sudden switched up to being a bitch was all over the place. No build-up at all, so it felt random. I wished it took at least a couple weeks before she started pulling away and turning into a bitch but right after they stepped out of the carriage was kinda funny in a ??? way
3. The bullying. And the fact that it became like center conflict at the end was major 🤪 Come on. I could understand if this is a mid teen book but they're actually 18. And the bullying was funny for their ages 🤣 It was like a small, minor thing and then it became out of hand because what do you mean he suddenly killed someone 😂😭 the intensity went from 20 to 100 real quick
4. Coen. Ugh. I know he's only 3 years older than her but he still posed as a fifth year. It's kinda funny to imagine a fifth year paying attention to a first year LIKE THAT. I don't care about the age gap but the instant attraction is 🤢 they had a potential but they jumped right to it so it made me think that maybe he wasn't the actual mmc? Fingers actually crossed.
5. The plot execution. I read the book because the cover was pretty and it was really interesting in the beginning. But as the book progressed, my brows went higher and higher. They're teens/young adults, but the jumps to the hook-ups/rumors don't seem to fit the book. It's like Hogwarts but make it r-16 and also FAE!!! 😭 i thought I've escaped the mate thingy but nooooo.
6. Emelle. I don't know why i don't like her. Or maybe her relationship to Rayna feels forced. Or maybe because Rayna is focused into a million other things that Emelle felt annoying to me.
7. The ending. It's so random 😭 they had a plan, and then the plan went to shit, and then memories are erased, and then she thinks he's a villain like ????? It wasn't a bad ending per se, but could have been executed better

I'd probably read book 2 but won't hold my breath.

I loved this book!

I received it as an ARC but already had it on my TBR.

This romantasy had me hooked from start to finish. It gave off Harry Potter/Divergent vibes but then Mariah created a world of her own.

I enjoyed Mariah’s writing style - the way she conveyed the atmosphere of the institute and described each type of magic. I liked Rayna - even though she was young and somewhat naïve, she wasn’t stupid and she stood up to injustice.
Loved the found family trope - the way her group of friends came together and supported each other and then also mingled with Coen’s friends.
And Coen - loved him! He and his “little hurricane” made a great couple - their chemistry was sizzling and the way he was in her mind, mostly being reassuring, was sweet. He was protective and patient and naughty.

I felt as though this book set the stage for the story and characters. We see development in their personalities (in both in the MCs and side characters) and are distracted by the “minor” villains - or the villains of this story - and only have is a glimpse into the greater evil that will surely be expanded upon in the next installment(s).

The events towards the end broke my heart and yes, it ended on a cliffhanger but instead of making me feel annoyed, I just wanted to read what was going to happen next.

Overall, I had a great reading experience. I absolutely recommend this book and can’t wait for the next one!

This book was pure perfection.
A MASTERPIECE.

ARC REVIEW

This book made it to the top of my fav romantasies soooo fast. It was perfect. I don’t even have the words. I read it in Less than 24 hours, it pained me to put it down at 3:30 am bc I needed to go to sleep.

First, The world building was so well written. You don’t get overwhelmed because of a huge info dump. And you can follow along the story without feeling like you need to re read the first hundred pages a few times to understand the story (beginning of CC1 🤡 iykyk).
And the magic system was really well thought, different from what we’re used to. And it was soooo interesting to discover where the magic came from and everything as the same time as Rayna ( the FMC) did.

Her friendships, whether it’s with the animals or her ‘human friends’ were all perfect. (I wanna hug jagaros so bad but I’m not sure he’d appreciate it).
I am obsessed with so many « side » characters . Rodhi made me laugh every time he appeared on page and it was just what was needed.

And now. Let’s talk about the MMC. Coen. He’s one of the best book boyfriend I’ve read about tbh. He’s protective, he’s sweet, he’s nice to her from the beginning ! And not some bully who’s bullying her because he likes her and wants her attention.
And HE’S HOT. Like really hot. I was giggling and wishing I was at Rayna’s place a few times 🤭

And at last but not least, the author is one of the nicest person I’ve had the occasion to talk to.🫶
She did a fantastic job with this book, and I’m really excited to see where the story goes next !

Really enjoyed this book.

The set up the magic system was interesting. It gives Divergent vibes where the students get a branding of one of the five magic abilities. Honestly, it gave me such nostalgia reading that part of the book, loved it.

I liked the setting, when Rayna gets to the Esholian Institute, I loved all the animals and nature. I loved the vibrancy of the place. And I had such fun with the characters talking to animals and plants. I enjoyed the lore and history of the island, the reason they are in a ‘dome’ and how The Good Council is good. It made it all really interesting.

Rayna was a good character and I enjoyed exploring her classes, magic and friendships with her. Coen was a great character too. I enjoyed their chemistry together. And I so enjoyed his ability of manipulating minds!

The ending was fantastic, good twist and I definitely need the sequel because I need to know what happens next!

The only slight complaint I have is that Rayna immediately meets a typical ‘mean’ girl who is just mean to Rayna just because. It wasn’t necessarily believable why she disliked her from the start. Don’t get me wrong, other people hated her from the start (the ex) made sense. But this was such a small thing, it didn’t bother me for too long, plus things happened throughout the book that solidified the hatred and made it more believable.

This was perfection. I loved loved loved loved loved this book.

My heart is so full of emotions. I’m literally crying right now. That ending and cliffhanger and just thinking about what the next book is going to entail just makes me want to sob. I’m heartbroken. But at the same time, this book didn’t only bring me sadness. I felt happiness, hurt, joy, anger and literally everything. This was truly incredible. To bring out all kinds of emotion in such a was speaks of incredible writing and storytelling, something this book was full of. Bro I just fucking loved it so much I don’t know what to say

This is for sure going to bring me into a slump if I let it. I need to read something else easily ingested asap

Give me the next book asap pls I’m begging you

I loved everything about this book. The world and the magic system had me in an absolute chokehold NEEDING to know absolutely everything about it. The story just gets better and better as you read with twists, turns, and mysteries to solve. I struggled to put it down, and when I did I was thinking about it constantly.

The characters are very well written and Rayna is such a loveable FMC. She's who we all wish we could have been in college. The romance aspect was great. The spice level is low, but it felt natural considering the setting and character arcs.

The writing was so easy to digest and had a great flow. It was easy to read and the imagery described made the world so rich and interesting. This is the non problematic magical academic setting we all need in our lives.... No more discussing sorting hats, we all need to be talking about what sector we'd be in after branding.

This book is going to be occupying my thoughts for a VERY long time. The last couple of chapters had me audibly gasping. I cannot wait for book two!!!

Arc review:

this book was so much fun, it gave everything I love in a fantasy.
It was so cozy with the school setting but at the same time so exciting and a lot was happening.

The characters are soo GOOD. Rayna is really likable and Coen gives book boyfriend 🤭 The friend group is soo adorable, Melle and Lander are such sweathearts, they deserve the world. The connection with the animals was so heartwarming and interesting, that whole concept was so unique!

The world building was so flawless and not overwhelming at all, I love how we learned a lot about the world alongside Rayna. THE ENDING? so good but so devastating. It build so much excitement for the next book.

I'm not a big fan of the whole the ex is a psycho, who causes trouble trope in books, so that was one thing I didn't liked.

CANT WAIT FOR BOOK 2 !! 🩷
