This novel of the Civil War is about a plot to kill Lincoln by the Confederacy in 1864. They plan to use a balloon to drop a bomb (called a torpedo) on to the White House. With Lincoln dead--they hope a new president would seek peace to end the bloody war that was becoming unpopular in the north. The inventor of the balloon is killed and his daughter must help to make it possible with the help of a Confederate Office who is Cherokee Indian! They fall in love even if it is socially unacceptable. Dark forces work to stop the plan and kill all those who would try this new weapon to end the war.
