Secrets, twists, and turns! My Husband's Lover grabbed my attention on page 1 and never let go. This was a riveting, gripping and shocking page turner!
Sophie needs some time away. She and her cold-water swimming group are looking forward to going away for a week. It is just what she needs, or is it? When she showed her husband a picture of her swimming friends, he gets a strange look on his face and then while driving to their cabin, he calls to inform her that one of her friends is the woman he has been sleeping with. Talk about spoiling a trip. To top it off, he won’t tell her who his lover is leaving poor Sophie anxious, looking for clues and questioning her friends. He is obviously not going to be winning the husband of the year award.
This was a fun and gripping book. Like Sophie, I had on my super sleuthing hat, trying to figure out the identity of his lover. That was the fun part and no, I did not guess the mistress. But I enjoyed reading as events unfolded and particularly enjoyed how Ryder provided the "voice" of the mistress in the chapters titled "Swimmer". Very nicely done.
The setting of this book was fantastic and provided a secluded, atmospheric background for Sophie to do her own painful detective work.
I found this book to be well written and nicely paced. I read this in one day as I did not want to put this book down!
Although this book did not make me want to swim in icy cold water, it did make me want to read more of Jess Ryder's books!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
My husband cheated on me. It still hurts, but I'm trying to forgive him for the sake of our kids. I need a break, away from it all, with my girlfriends from the wild swimming group. They've been my lifeline these past months. But on the way up to Scotland my husband calls me with a shocking confession. His mistress is on the trip. He won't tell me which of my friends it is, just begs me to come home. But I ignore him. And as the candlelight flickers on the walls of our remote hideaway, I watch my friends closely as they sip their wine and laugh. Someone is hiding something; I need to know who.
Set in Scotland, this gripping thriller had me hooked from the first page and held my attention throughout. It's descriptively written with lots of twist and turns to keep us guessing. We get the points of view from to characters - the first being Sophie, the second person we only know as "the swimmer," the person who is having an affair with Sophie's husband. The pace is steady throughout. This is a story of deception and revenge, and it has a shocking ending.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #JessRyder for my ARC of #MyHusbandsLover in exchange for an honest review.
I’m not certain just how much I can say about this storyline to whet your appetite, without giving anything away, but here goes nothing!…
Sophie and Ryan have two young sons aged nine and ten years old, but their marriage is going through a rocky patch, since Sophie discovered that Ryan had been cheating on her. Ryan appears contrite, although he seems to think that telling Sophie that it was only for sex, is going to put things right more quickly.
In an effort to have some therapy time for herself, Sophie establishes ‘Sophie’s Swimmers’, a wild swimming club, where she and five other women who have joined her, meet once a week at the lake of a local Nature Discovery Park. Fern, Ariel, Keira, Grace and Elise, come from diverse backgrounds, although they meet purely for the swimming and actually know little of one another’s private lives. Fern is obviously the most well-to-do of the group and it is she who suggests that they should go away for a week’s swimming break as a group. The location she chooses is in a remote part of Scotland, a two mile hike from the nearest car park and many miles from any village or town. The cottage is basic in the extreme and has no facilities, so they will have zero contact with the outside world for the duration of their stay, at least that’s what they believe! It is however, both close to the coast for sea swimming and has its own loch nearby, for those all important early morning, wild swimming dips.
Ryan is far from happy about her plans, even though Sophie has arranged for the children to visit their maternal grandparents for the week, so he won’t have to be responsible for their care. However, when Sophie shows him a group picture of ‘Sophie’s Swimmers’, he becomes positively apoplectic, although he refuses to say why. He begs her not to go, however Sophie digs in her heels, even when one of their number does have to cry off at the last minute. The journey up country is long and arduous for Sophie, as the only driver, made much worse by the garbled phone call she exchanges with Ryan from a motorway services, where he confides in her part of his reticence for her making the trip, whilst still refusing to be completely truthful with her.
Armed with a little knowledge, which they do say can be a dangerous thing, Sophie disengages from the group more and more, as she begins to try and unravel the truth from the limited amount of information Ryan gave her. With revenge on her mind, aware that she in return, is being hunted, and with the disadvantage of not knowing who her adversary is, Sophie hopes to set up a final and maybe fatal showdown and so a very deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. However, there are other members of the group who also have their own agendas and are not as innocent as everyone believes. They too, are busy setting their individual plans in motion, and so a wily and potentially catastrophic chain of events is set to unfold on several unconnected levels, which are every bit as lethal as one another, and each of which seem to wrap themselves around Sophie, dragging her down until she doesn’t know where to turn.
Finally, with a perplexing crime scene left in the less than capable hands of the local police, what is left of the group are free to head home, with a seemingly traumatised Sophie needing space and time alone to make preparations for her new life going forwards. However, she will only realise that goal after she has finally destroyed her nemesis, with the biggest secret of them all. This is one tough cookie, determined that the future is going to happen on her terms, and hers alone!
Don’t get mad, get even. If you can’t get even one way, then find a different way!!
...
And how those unexpected twists and turns just kept coming – from the very first, to the very final word!…
The story is predominantly told in two voices, those of Sophie and her unknown antagonist, called simply ‘The Swimmer’, a format which worked brilliantly once I got to grips with it, which didn’t take long at all.
This well-structured, multi-layered storyline was powerful, well-paced, highly textured and intense. The cut-it-with-a-knife atmosphere, for the most part was desperately cloying and claustrophobic, yet totally immersive. The tension mounted exponentially, with a situation which had at first seemed manageable, fast careening out of control.
There was not a single facet of this storyline which was simple or uncomplicated, as more and more clues were drip-fed into the narrative little by little. Nothing was quite as it seemed and the twists and turns just kept on coming – and I mean right to the very end, complicating the tangled web of lies and secrets which overlaid everything, until I just didn’t know who to believe any more. In fact, the reveal of the antagonist at about the 75% marker, didn’t make a shred of difference, as the suspense was maintained right up to the turn of that last page. Don’t assume anything is over, until it’s over!
The story predominantly takes place in the remote, sometimes beautiful, but often harsh conditions of the Ardnish Peninsula, in the Highlands of Scotland. Even though, with all the terrible things going on around them, the ladies may not have had either the mental capacity or inclination to notice the scenery they had hoped to enjoy during their stay, author Jess Ryder still made time to use the full palette at her disposal, to paint the physical location with a rich colour and vibrancy, taking in the sights, sounds and smells, which lifted this place which time forgot, off the page, offering a truly inclusive experience for the reader. As a confirmed ‘armchair traveller’ I could feel myself being transported to another world, although I have to admit that personally, I do prefer my amazing scenery to come with a few mod-cons and little luxuries. Oh! and as a non-swimming, fear of water, confirmed landlubber, some of the excruciatingly detailed water scenes were ‘hands covering the eyes’ moments.
I can honestly say that, despite the entire cast of characters being well defined and described in vivid detail, none of them were in the least bit likeable or authentic. I tried to take into account that many of them were ‘damaged goods’ in one way or another and by varying degrees. However, I found them simply too manipulative, malevolent and duplicitous, to be in any way compelling or with any depth I could invest in.
Sophie and Ryan are the perfect match for each other and I found it difficult to work out which was the biggest liar of the two, the one with most secrets. Except for when she was in the company of her young sons, Sophie was definitely the hardest hearted of the couple and always had been. Ryan was always the inherent victim of any situation, prone to laziness and rather spineless, although in reality, he really did just need a good kick up the bottom and there is no way I would have put up with him. However, I’m not sure I would have been quite so evil as Sophie, in case it affected any one else who was innocent – although there was little chance of that in this book.
As you can probably tell, I became really invested in this storyline for its duration, although I was more than happy to walk away from it when it was over, as it was possibly a little too all-consuming – Job Done, I would say, Jess!
Seatbelt yourself in for this twisty thriller by Jess Ryder. My Husband's Lover is full of shocking plot twists!
Synopsis: Sophie is looking forward to spending time swimming with her girlfriends at a secluded cabin for a week. She deserves this getaway after learning of her husband's affair. In the midst of her painful marriage, Sophie has been kept sane by her friends and their swim group. The trip appears to be running smoothly, until Sophie's husband calls to confess that his secret lover is one of her "trusted" friends staying in the cabin.
My Husband's Lover has jaw-dropping moments that held my interest. One does need to suspend belief and roll with the story to fully enjoy. This is my first book by Jess Ryder and I look forward to reading more from the talented author.
My Husband's Lover by Jess Ryder is available on October 14th.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this curvy book with me. Your kindness is appreciated!
This is a cleverly plotted thriller that will most assuredly keep you guessing until the end. The book grabs you at the beginning with a shocking twist; Sophie’s husband has been cheating, and she’s just found out that his mistress is one of the people on a “wild swimming” getaway she is currently attending. Sophie is determined to find out who this woman is, but there is so much more in store for her than that.
The plot twists in this novel never let up, and the reader is on a literal roller coaster throughout this exciting read. Because this is a plot-driven book, character development sometimes takes a back seat, but that does not take away from the story. The concept of a swimming getaway called “wild swimming,” which is basically swimming in a natural, remote location, rain or shine, sometimes with few amenities, is something I haven’t heard of before. It’s the perfect setting for a thriller.
If you love books with shocks you never expected, pick this one up. Fans of thrillers will love Jess Ryder’s latest. My rating is 3.7 stars, rounded up to 4.
I received a free copy of this book from Bookouture via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.
This was my first Jess Ryder book and I loved it! The plot intrigued me so much. Loads of suspects, tons of mystery, and I loved the introduction of The Swimmer POV too, to give us more clues along the way. The pacing kicks straight off and maintains throughout. I was constantly guessing who the mistress was, and it was expertly plotted. Loved all the characters too, they were perfect 'love to hate' people and all had my suspicions at some point in the story. Highly recommended.
My Husband's Lover by Jess Ryder is a wonderfully atmospheric read packed full of suspense and tension. With lots of secrets and lies, it will have you gripped with every page you turn.
Sophie and her friends get together every week and they swim in the icy waters come what may weatherwise. Well the small group of women decided to go away on a trip and they find a remote cabin in the Scottish highlands and they get all excited about this trip. One of them bows out so only five go on this trip and just possibly, only four will return.
Sophie discovers that one of these women, women that she thought were her friends, is sleeping with her husband. So as we get Sophie’s point of view in this intriguing book, we also get “The Swimmer’s” point of view. The cabin will have no electricity, of course no internet, and the truth will definitely come out.
I loved playing armchair detective alongside Sophie as she tried to figure out which of the women was sleeping with her husband. It was also quite interesting to see the devious nature of the woman that was sleeping with Sophie’s husband as the story really took shape. As this book progressed, with excellent pacing and a dark atmosphere, with just the right amount of twists, this story definitely kept me riveted. With interesting characters, a dark atmosphere, twists and turns that caught me by surprise, and a shocking ending, this book by Jess Ryder was definitely a win.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
3 ⭐⭐⭐ - OK, or decent reads. ==========================
The Husband: cowardly piece of shit who had no loyalty to his wife and mother of his children. I would be delighted to see her husband sunk to the bottom of the lake and rot. The Mistress: she involved the couple in a web of revenge and deception that destroyed everyone in its path. The Wife: I was pretty caught up in the drama she was involved in and I was trying to figure out who the mistress was and when she was going to make an attack. The atmosphere of the story was very interesting and entertained me until the end. I would like a tragic ending for the husband, but the mistress got what she deserved and will not have the freedom she would like. The mistress will have a lot of mess to clean up and a ton of consequences for her family. Secondary Characters: all very interesting and helped to maintain the suspenseful atmosphere.
It was a good read, nothing out of the ordinary, an ok read.
Thank goodness for call display! I’ve fended off unwanted calls simply by looking at the number before I choose to answer my phone. However, I’ve also answered a familiar number and lived to regret it.
Our protagonist, Sophie, answers her phone on the way to a girls’ weekend and it ruins everything. She hears something she can’t ‘un-hear’ and it influences how she interacts with everyone, making Condie’s Retreat an experience she won’t want to repeat.
I loved the remote setting and how it directed the plot as much as I loved the ‘locked room’ trope. The red herrings and the chapters written from THE SWIMMER’S point of view were well orchestrated and I was surprised I didn’t see the culprit for who he/she really was. The secrets were layered well and it was a quick, easy read, checking many of my crime thriller boxes and making this novel one I’d heartily recommend to those who love this subgenre.
“It’s only a photo, but it’s about to change the rest of her life.”
This great psychological thriller hinges on people seeing and hearing things they shouldn’t have and it makes ALL the difference in the world. You’ll turn over the last page and be reminded that secrets can’t stay buried forever.
I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
My Husband’s Lover by Jess Ryder This is such a well written book with a very clever plot. I found it to be such an easy to read page turner. The twists got me. I thought I had it figured out, but nope! I was wrong on several occasions in the book. Without a doubt I recommend to anyone who loves suspense. Many thanks to Jess Ryder, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Sophie and Ryan are having marital problems. He’s had an affair. Her and her wild swimming group decide to go on a secluded trip to Scotland. Halfway there she gets a call from her husband telling her not to go and that one of the women is the one he’d been having an affair with and that she was in danger. Sophie doesn’t want to know who it is and goes anyway. This was a very gripping thriller and kept me guessing. Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author for this ARC!
Sophie creates a swimming group that meets up weekly. She is married to Ryan and they have two boys. Sophie and the rest of the swimming group are invited to go away to a remote Scottish getaway where they can swim every morning and take a break from life. Sophie gets more than she bargained for on the trip when she finds out one the girls is having an affair with her husband, but she doesn't know who it is.
This was quite a story! I was turning the pages quickly to try to solve the mystery and of course I had it all wrong, but maybe you will guess correctly! Overall, this is a fast-paced, engaging read. I would highly recommend MY HUSBAND'S LOVER to all my thriller friends.
Many Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This review will be posted to my Instagram @coffee.break.book.reviews in the near future.
Sophie's husband cheated on her, but she continues their marriage for their two boys' sake, but it is proving more difficult than she first expected. So to escape her thoughts and claim a little me time, Sophie starts a wild swimming group with five strangers, or so she thought. But a shocking confession by her husband Ryan as she is driving to Scotland for a girls' wild swimming' getaway stuns Sophie, and the implications and potential danger begin to hit home.
This is a fast-paced book that kept me engaged from start to finish. The plot is constructed very well, there were some twists and turns that you expected along the way, but the real villain was a huge surprise.
As a side note, you will either like Sophie or feel frustrated by her; however, this doesn't deflect from the plot or your enjoyment. I highly recommend this book.
These wild swimming women are all friends, it would seem, So they're off for a holiday by an isolated loch - is it a dream? However, there are secrets they've kept from each other And some of them they're about to discover....
A fascinating read full of twists galore As a wife is determined the truth to explore. One of the women is her husband's lover Which one she is determined to discover.
With secrets from the past that have been hidden away Never spoken of or brought into play. As the holiday unfolds there's a cost to pay For someone that cost will be their life one day.
A totally enthralling and intriguing read Your page turning addiction this story will feed. With shocking revelations and unexpected history This is a fascinating family drama and friends mystery.
For my complementary copy of this book I say thank you. It is a gripping read and this is my honest review
Solid Mystery/ Suspense. This is an interesting tale told mostly from the perspective of a wife whose husband had informed her (before the events of this book) that he had had an affair - and now she's trying to pick up the pieces of her life. The other perspective we (sporadically) get is mysterious... until it outs itself in a rather shocking twist. Ryder here manages to convey the isolation of her environment well - isolation that this American didn't realize was possible at all on that particular island across the pond. And she uses this isolation well to both increase the sense of danger and to convey the emotions swirling around her central characters. Truly a solid read within its genre, and very much recommended.
3.5 Who Is Lying Stars * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free-A Quick Review My Husband's Lover by Jess Ryder is a look at deception from so many points of view. This takes a tragic event where many have been touched by the person of this event and how it impacts all of them.
The author creates a guessing game of who is who and why it all is happening. We also have the guessing game of who is hiding what and for how long.
Sophie heads off for a break with other members of her swimming group to a remote - very remote - house in the wilds of Scotland. But things take a very different, and possibly dangerous, turn when she realises that one of the four other women - but which? - is the person who's been having an affair with her husband...
Jess Ryder's books are always a good read and this was no exception. The wild swimming theme is very on trend (we just called it swimming outdoors in my day) and this aspect of the story was well described and atmospheric, as is the isolation of the house they stay in - so much so that you can't drive there but instead have to park in a lay-by and walk for an hour and a half. I love a bit of rural isolation but I'm not sure I'd go that far.
I didn't find Sophie a hugely engaging protagonist - she seemed a bit pathetic to be honest. Ryan is very clearly a dead loss as a husband, having previously been a dead loss as a boyfriend, and it's anybody's guess why Sophie stuck with him for so many years. He was definitely in need of kicking into touch.
I also had a bit of difficulty clearly differentiating the other members of the swimming group - I knew Ariel and Keira but could never remember which was which out of Elise and Grace.
Although none of the characters were particularly relatable and I did guess a couple - though not all - the twists, it was a fast and easy read which did keep my interest throughout.
So...the title tells you exactly what kind of book this is, and it really doesn't disappoint.
This is a kind of silly, fast-paced adventure of a book. Our main character (surprise) is not a doormat, though I wouldn't put myself in this particular situation.
There are secrets and scandals and lies and it's kind of delicious.
The reason behind everything is kind of...uninspiring. However, it's still fun to see just how over the top some characters get over that reason.
This is the fifth book I've read by Jess Ryder. Meet Sophie who is part of a group of swimmers; they are all on a sojourn in the Scottish Highlands. However, before they leave Sophie who is mum to nine-year-old Ben, learns that her husband, Ryan is having an affair... and his mistress is one of the swimmers. Tense and exciting, I was really invested in this chilling tale from the off. There are a few great plot twists and a surprising and shocking ending to delight the reader. Well worth a look.
This review was written voluntarily and my rating was in no way influenced by the fact that I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley.
Romantic relationships are born every day. People get engaged every day. People get married or start living together every day.
All those things are related to the happy site of love.
Unfortunately couples break up or get divorced daily too and that causes a lot of heartbreak.
It hurts of course when the love of your life is not the person you thought they were and you just fall out of love. A break up can be done in a kind way and you can remain friends. Sometimes though you find out your other half has cheated on you and you are devastated. You try to work it out, but the crack still remains. Love and trust go hand in hand and when one of them is missing, it’s hard to go back to those happy times.
This is what happened to Sophie. She still cannot trust her husband Ryan 100 percent and she needs to find something to do for herself. She starts a wild water swimming group and the ladies attending soon become her friends, her lifeline.
Going away on a break for a week with them seems like a very good idea. A remote cottage in Scotland is their destination.
What felt like an excellent escape is soon turned into a nightmare when Sophie gets a call from her husband when they are almost halfway there. Sophie has two options: go back home and forget about it all or proceed and dig until she finds out the truth.
Get ready for a chilling book with more twists and turns than you could ever have imagined.
There are two points of view. The story is told on the one hand by Sophie and on the other hand by a mysterious villain.
I had no idea at all who that villain could be and when they are exposed, everything is crystal clear, right… Maybe. Maybe not. That’s for me to know and for you to find out. 😉
There is only one thing left for me to do: giving this amazing story a 5 star rating. 😉
This was a dud for me. I may be on the other spectrum but I feel like I was tricked. The synopsis gave me a sense of Sophie, the main character, having this bond and friendship with these women and she has to find out which little evil friend is sleeping with her husband. The reality is that Sophie was barely even really friends with these people and my strawberry pop tarts I’m currently eating have more emotion than any of these people did in this book. The characters, the plot, the “mystery” and the end all fell so flat. I couldn’t feel for anyone and the secrets were just ludicrous.
Sophie started a group called Sophie’s swimmers who would go into the freezing water as long as they could and then hop out. It was all so refreshing for their minds etc. One friend comes up with an idea to go away for a week to a place that has a great swimming loch to do what they love and spend time together. Before they leave Sophie finds out her husband is having an affair with one of the people in the group and she is on a mission to find out who it is. You get some chapters of “the swimmer” who gives tidbits on who she could be and why she is doing what she is doing.
It started off strong and I was excited to see where it would go but it all ended up being quite underwhelming and I wanted to just hurry up and finish it. Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me.
Thank you Bookouture and netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Jess Ryder's atmospheric thriller MY HUSBAND'S LOVER.
A wife. A mistress. A week away with no escape…
What a tense and atmospheric read this was! And what better setting than the remote Scottish Highlands. No electricity, no phone signal, no WiFi, no running water, a compost toilet...they call it ecotourism; I call it roughing it in dangerous territory. I've read too many thrillers to find THAT in any way relaxing. No way would you get me there without some form of civilisation nearby. What if there was an emergency? As these women soon found out...
The story builds slowly as we meet Sophie and Ryan in the midst of marital difficulties. The fact that Sophie has let it smoulder without even a hint of forgiveness tells me that their marriage is in trouble. Still reeling from a New Year revelation that he'd been having an affair, which he said was more like a fling, Sophie is furious with her husband for his betrayal. But as you get to know the couple and their story, I'm a bit baffled as to why she is even surprised! The fact that she kind of rumbled him into a relationship and even admitted to her friends they lived together for two years before she managed to drag him up the aisle. That speaks to me that Ryan went along reluctantly...and his behaviour kind of confirmed that. So again, I'm wondering, why Sophie was even surprised by his revelation?
Anyway, in light of his betrayal and after months of marriage counselling, there was no real sign of progress but still they soldiered on for the sake of their two sons. But still Sophie felt betrayed. I get it, I do; I would too in her situation. So she decides she needs something for her...to lose herself in, or maybe to find herself. And so she creates Sophie's Swimmers - a group of women who brave the icy waters of wild swimming.
What is wild swimming? It's basically, to all intents and purposes, swimming in natural pools of water - be it a bend in a river, an open lake or even the sea. It is far more dangerous than the confined spaces of a man-made swimming pool. There are no lifeguards, the waters are invigoratingly cold and if in a river or open sea, there are currents and tides to contend with.
For Sophie, wild swimming is an escape. To make her forget. And together with five other regulars - Fern, Keira, Elise, Grace and Ariel - they meet weekly at a local lake to brave the cold waters. One day, the women are tossing about ideas of a wild swimming trip together somewhere and Fern discovers the perfect place in the Scottish Highlands in a remote cottage with no electricity, running water, WiFi or mobile phone signal, surrounded by lochs in which they can swim. The women jump on board the idea and the getaway is booked. But Fern pulls out at the last minute, leaving the other women to go on without her...and leaving Sophie as the only driver of the group.
It's a seven or so hour drive to the layby in which they leave the car for the 90 minute hike through a single file trail to their remote cabin far away from any kind if civilisation. They are barely into the trip when Sophie gets an urgent call from Ryan. The woman he had an affair with is part of Sophie's group and she has been stalking her for the best part of six months. She asks who but he refuses to tell her. He begs her to turn around and come home but she ignores his pleas. She will just have to uncover her husband's mistress for herself.
However, if she thought this was to be a relaxing week away, then she was very much mistaken. Sophie's problems are only just beginning...
I loved the remote setting in the Scottish Highlands. It made for an incredibly atmospheric thriller, directing the plot with twists, red herrings and tension that was palpable throughout. Although it began as a slow build, it held my attention enough until it picked up its pace and then I was turning the pages at the rate of knots to uncover the who and the why. I had a couple of suspects but leant towards one predominantly which turned out to be correct. But not before ticking off one or two others.
The story unfolds through the third person POV of Sophie and that of the interspersed chapters of the person we know only as "The Swimmer". From those chapters, I nit-picked for any clue to narrow down my suspect pool. But then when they were revealed, it felt a little like an anti-climax and the rest of the ending just sort of petered out. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great read. It just lacked the jaw-dropping twist at the end.
Overall, MY HUSBAND'S LOVER is an entertaining psychological thriller with the tension, the sense of claustrophia and the whole atmosphere that will have you gasping for breath.
I would like to thank #Jess Ryder, #NetGalley and for an ARC of #MyHusbandsLover in exchange for an honest review.
Oh I loved this book from the very first page. Well lets be honest I loved this book well before the very first page. I was drawn in by the synopsis. And boy did this story deliver!
What is not to love about this book: The setting is amazing! Such an atmospheric setting in the Scottish wilderness. I as a reader wanted to be there and at the same time I wanted to run away from it as fast as possible.
The set up of the story was also new and refreshing. I have never read a book about wild water swimming and the bonding of woman over this activity. It was very clear that Jess Ryder did the necessary research on the topic and I really like that!
The plot was very well constructed and as a reader you were kept in the dark most of the time. This helped to really feel for the main character Sophie, because you really felt her confusion and the mood-swings while you were reading. I will admit that some of the twists and turns were very predictable, but the ultimate villain in the story was a huge surprise for me.
I loved the chapters that were written from the swimmers perspective. And I still cant believe that I didn't figure out who she was.
Absolutely loved the story and cant wait to read more of Jess Ryder!
I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I was provided with an ARC through NetGalley from Bookouture in exchange for an honest review.
This book grabbed me from the beginning. Sophie is struggling with her husbands dishonesty, so she creates a group for wild swimming. What is wild swimming? Basically the act of swimming in any body of water formed in nature, rather than a pool. For Sophie’s group, their meeting place is a lake. Meeting these women and jumping into the frigid waters brought them close enough they decided to take a vacation together to an extremely remote loch in Scotland.
Very shortly after their vacation begin, Sophie finds out she really doesn’t know anyone in her group, or how far her husbands dishonestly really goes. One of the swimmers in her group is her husbands lover. The Who and the why are revealed, but not without shocking twists.
This book was fast paced and kept me engaged. It also left me with a craving to jump into a lake (not a good idea for me- I live in Florida). I will be watching for more from Jess Ryder. She knows how to write a thriller and I expect this one to be a hit.
A high paced read. Loved the naturalistic, isolated setting of the story. Ryder tells the story of a wife who has been cheated on, but discovers that the woman with whom her husband cheated on her with is on her girls’ trip. The wife isn’t safe.. but, can she discover who the danger is before it is too late?
I big fan of this author and she never disappoints as always twisty, and addictive read. Sophie is married to Ryan they have two children. but Ryan had an affair he says meant nothing. Sophie has a swimming club where they go cold swimming in lakes, they all get on very well, so they decide to go to Scotland to a cottage no Wi-Fi no heating no electricity. but Sophie and Ryan have their own secrets. Sophie shows Ryan a group photo and he goes white and storms out. what Sophie does not know is that she is going on a break with Ryans lover who is she and why is she targeting Sophie a very good gripping read
There weren’t any likable characters in that story. The ending was rather bitter. Not my cup of tea. I know IRL people make mistakes but I prefer my heroines don’t. I couldn’t really feel sympathetic. The story was dragging IMO. I couldn’t return it on Amazon.
