De falsa legatione / On False Embassy: A Translation, with Rhetorical Notes

Rate this book
This new translation of Aeschines’ On the Embassy is designed for readers who know little or no Greek but would like to gain a sense of the linguistic and stylistic qualities the original texts. For example, key Greek terms are always translated by a particular English equivalent, so that the reader can trace the recurrence of the term throughout the speech. Salient figures and devices, such as repetition and amplification are carried over into the English and explained in notes. All instances of the ubiquitous “argument from the probability” are identified and annotated. The oral, performative, nature of much Attic oratory, and of Aeschines’ “extemporaneous” style in particular, is reflected in the somewhat colloquial register of the English version.\\
