The first season started out well, but I saw that it started heading towards a love triangle, which I personally hate the most, so I'm dropping it where I'm at. I may wait to see how the whole story ends before I decide whether it's worth picking up again or not.
3.5 stars because I really like the growing bond between Ian and Sol, but not quite 4 since the plot is still weirdly messy in spots.
For the most part, it did improve on that count. A lot of it was pretty straightforward: Ian got put on probation for fighting during the festival, which meant being stuck in his room and interacting with no one...which also meant that Sol could easily sneak in to steal him away.
Ian being able to disappear for multiple days without anyone noticing was a little too easy, but it was explained enough to be workable. And he's certainly impulsive enough to go along with "Jack's" plans for saving the trafficked children, whom it turns out all contain magic power and are being drained for some nefarious and unnamed purpose.
The actual logistics for Ian and Sol infiltrating the trafficking ring and exposing the powers behind it were...pretty sloppy and fairly nonsensical in spots. Some of it was fine: getting into a party, identifying exactly what was happening to the children, and setting up a new working relationship with the host. All fairly reasonable.
But I didn't really get why the drained children were originally lying dead in the basement ("like dolls") and were then dragged upstairs to be draped around furniture with all the still-alive children, including one of the boys Ian and Sol brought in as part of their infiltration. Why are the bodies not rotting? Are they just soulless instead of being actually fully dead? But there's no indication that there's any way of saving them. Why would they all be freshly drained but the new batch of kids would be safe (in a room with a bunch of dead bodies) for five days while the festival runs its course?
Just messy, messy stuff. Then we've got the host, who immediately identifies Sol as a foreign intruder, as does Nephew Brixton, who's sent to the party by the Cardinal. And a couple of assassins who are sent to drain the other kid and frame Sol for it, which somehow will prevent the rumored war...even though they would be blaming that nation for horrific crimes...which would lead to the war??
Genuinely so little of the logic makes sense. But then! Ian happens to catch the assassins and saves the kid, and ties them up and goes back to his room so the Cardinal won't notice him missing. But he doesn't tell Sol about the assassins. He doesn't restrain them properly, because they escape and send a message to the host. He doesn't really protect the boy at all because he just leaves him there in a residence with a bunch of knocked out servants and stuff?????? Who is taking care of this child anyway??
Then for some reason Nephew Brixton agrees that Ian should be the one to lead the Knights Templar to invade the residence, even though he's fully aware that Ian has been hanging around with the fishy foreign guy they suspect of helming a lot of this trafficking stuff. And the Cardinal agrees, even though he's able to smell the medicine (and possibly magic) that Sol had used to heal Ian's wounds, making it obvious that he hadn't actually been stuck in his room the whole time.
I just can't figure out anyone's motivations at this point. I'd definitely been leaning really hard on the notion that it's Cardinal Brixton who's behind the whole trafficking and magic-stealing scheme, but I can't see how it'd make any sense for him to go out of his way to invade a party that he himself was responsible for. I guess it could just be an elaborate way to put himself above suspicion...and the plot is sloppy enough that it's tough to try to use reasonable logic to pick out what's going on.
All the emotions in the story are really good, though. I still like Sol, although I'm a tiny bit concerned about what his true motivations are. Is he really as genuine as he seems to Ian? I know he's hiding things, but his personality doesn't feel like a front, in the way the Cardinal's obviously is.
The Cardinal's obsession with Ian is getting stronger and more obvious to everyone around him, and usually Ian would be responding to that and wanting badly to please him. But something about Sol just draws him so much more. He feels seen and understood and cared for in a way he's never experienced before, and it makes him relax so much in Sol's presence.
I loved the bath scene. I loved the little moments of affection in all these odd, unexpected places. I loved that it's entirely emotions-focused at this point, without it running into steamy territory before anyone is remotely ready for that.
Will the plot make sense by the end? I have no idea. But I still like the characters and am intrigued to find out more about how magic fits into their world, and why Sol and the Cardinal are both so drawn to Ian. What makes him special, beyond the depth of his magical powers? What does he not know about his own past?
I made a promise to myself that if I don’t absolutely love a series I’m going to end my time with it so goodbye to Eternal Covenant. I know this is another popular one so it must just be me but I just find it to be ok. The characters are ok. The story is ok. The chemistry between our two leads is ok. I will say the art is stunning but other than that I just kept thinking how this was just ok. Honestly I was so bored I kept putting it down to scroll online hence the two rating. It wasn’t offensive nor did it make me angry or upset but it bored me when it wasn’t just ok. I have too many books on the tbr pile to settle for boring and ok.
The love story between Brian and Sol sends me to tears. However, I don’t think it is necessary to make the whole season about them which is pretty long. Also, I find Lorkan the most interesting character so far. Hes one of my favorite flavors of villains, hes so twisted and obsessed and hot
I'm trying to figure out where this is going but the series is still on going so.I think I'm going to be patient with the plot. Not something I love but sometimes it's worth it. I do love the artwork. It is very cute at times and helps cut up the very dark story of child kidnapping.
Eternal Covenant Vol 2 - I was getting anxious about the children’s safety and the two guys I interest if they have feeling of each other (Ian and Jack). I look forward to read Vol 3. I have rate this a 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
