Nazareth's Song

Rate this book
Book 2 in The Millwood Hollow Series The town of Nazareth is beginning to feel like home to young preacher Jeb Nubey and the three Welby kids in his charge. But just as he's about to take over the pulpit, a local war breaks out - and only Jeb can make peace between the town's prosperous banker and its hungry, desperate citizens. “Hickman gamely unpacks the lies families tell each other, the cost of family secrets to ourselves and others, the bonds between sisters and the walls between husbands and wives. Her sparkling talent is evident in this engrossing story.” ~ Publishers Weekly

Best-selling novelist Patricia Hickman has written 18 books for major publishers like Random House and Hachette Books.

A note from me, the author: Hey! My latest teen fiction title is TINY DANCER, a coming of age story for sophisticated readers of young adult fiction—maybe you!

I love good food, taking road trips, hiking, and biking, but most of all writing you new stories you'll fall in love with. You can visit me here at Goodreads, through my official FB author page, or my website at patriciahickman.com.

Jeb Nubey is learning to be a minister from Pastor Gracie. The story is filled with the good intentions of Jeb Nubey. Caring for children that were not his. Kept the community together,by doing the right thing. No one had money in the 1930's in Millwood Hollow. Jeb did his best to minister to all.

How did I not know about Hickman’s Millwood Hollow series? As the blurb on the cover says, this book is “as cozy as a patchwork quilt.” It’s the Great Depression in rural Arkansas. Jeb Nubey and the three children he cares for can barely scratch together enough to eat and keep the lights on. After a shady past, he is trying to reform his life and has been training to become a church pastor. When Rev. Gracie, the current pastor in Nazareth, AK, falls ill, he is catapulted into running the Church in the Dell. The old church is threadbare and hurting for cash, too. A rich banker in town has a proposition that will bring in plenty of money. But it feels wrong. Should he do it or not? Meanwhile, he really wishes schoolteacher Fern would like him more and wonders if the banker’s daughter’s attentions to him are pure. In this novel, we meet a whole community of colorful and loving people, and things work out pretty well. But the story isn’t done. This was book two in the series, and there are more that follow. I have already started reading the first book, Fallen Angels, which sets the stage for Nazareth’s Song. Did I mention Rev. Jeb plays the banjo? My kind of clergy.

This was a really good read. Strong, interesting characters. Lots of conflicts and tough decisions abound. Shows life in rural Arkansas during the Depression in a way that really makes it come alive. Through it all - the struggle to determine what it is that God would have each of us do in a given situation shines through. Really glad I found this book to fulfill a challenge and glad I read it!

A pleasant book to read. The author did a good job developing the characters and drew me into the small town drama. I didn’t read the first book in the series, but still had enough info weaved in about Jeb’s past to appreciate how he, Fern and the children evolved this time around.

After having to wait six years to continue with this follow-up to Fallen Angels, I was ready to turn cartwheels over finally getting my grubby mitts on this book. I expected life would get harder and harder for Jeb Nubey but didn't expect Angel to grow into such a headstrong brat and be responsible for so many of those difficulties nor for Fern to be such an enigma--and snot. Wow, so much like real life and real people! I can't say this follow-up was better than the original, but I found it to be at least equally good. This is a warm original story with well-drawn, realistic characters; accurate historical background, and Christian life-lessons for those who understand that God doesn't just tie up all our troubles with a neat little bow. He allows us to persevere through both pruning and fire to forge us for a greater purpose than we can foresee while enduring by life's pain. During the last ten years I have lost all my heroes who lived through this era and taught me those lessons, so I was delighted to meet Jeb Nubey to fill that aching gap they left in my life.

This book picks up about a year after the other one ends. Jeb is wrapping up his studies when Philemon informs him it's nearly time to take over; Philemon has to move for his health. During the transition Jeb faces difficult situations with his eldest charge plus certain members if Nazareth. It's a strong second book; I plan to reread the last two books in this series as well.
