The two top competitors in the American Model of the Year contest have received anonymous threats. Since Heather's mom works at the newspaper that's sponsoring the contest, Heather gains access behind-the-scenes as a teen reporter. But once she uncovers the shocking truth, Heather becomes the target.
Actually 4 1/2 stars. I'm taking off half a star for lack of geography research. There is no Kirby College or Kirby, PA as a suburb of Philadelphia, near Valley Forge, or King of Prussia. There is a Kirby PA with a 15___ zip code which is western PA almost 6 hours from Philadelphia. There are college buildings bearing the Kirby name in Easton (1 1/2 hours north of Philly) and State College (3 1/2 hours west of Philly). Yes, I am a proud resident of SEPA (southeastern PA) 40 miles northwest of Philly and I have seen several concerts at the Valley Forge Music Faire (before it closed); so it was fun to read about a familiar place. Side note: one of the closest college towns to Valley Forge Music Faire is Collegeville - home of Ursinus College - also a lovely, and growing, residential community.
The other reason I was attracted to this book...I have a sorority sister named Heather Reed. :-D
Enough abut my personal attraction/connection to the story; let's talk about the story itself. This is book two of a series; I have not read book one so am at a loss to the character foundation. However, the author gave me just enough description and relationship information to create mental pictures of Heather; her brother, Brian; his best friend, Joe; and her bets friend, Jenn. A great sleuthing team. I think Joe has a thing for Heather. The four work well together finding clues. Heather seems to be the one to put the pieces together - the other three act as additional eyes and ears or data gatherers.
The story is dated. First because the Valley Forge Music Faire closed in the mid 90s. Second, Heather puts on "pink stirrup pants, a fuzzy pink sweater, and orange blazer." Yeah, we totally dressed like that in the mid to late 80s. Jenn's outfit was much edgier with "black jeans, red plaid blouse, and black leather jacket." Otherwise it is a-okay. We still have pageants so this could happen now. Heather and her friends are visiting a pageant when strange things start to happen. The four immerse themselves in the scene to help keep contestants safe and figure out what is happening or who is up to no good.
If you like Nancy Drew or any other cozy mysteries, you will like this series. It is published by Word Publishing which is Harper Collins Christian division. There are a few instances where the characters pray or mention prayer, other than that you will find this very mild in the realms of Christian fiction (some can get very preachy or in your face).
I truly enjoyed this story and wish I had more in my collection.
