Claudio Naranjo was a Chilean psychiatrist. He was co-developer of the Enneagram of Personality. His studies and investigations oftenly focused in the search of spirituality to find mental stability, and also some times, the use of lisergic substance to free hidden and harmful thoughts.
Really enjoyed the structure of the book, thorough and in depth explanation of each individual subtype. As an Sp1, I felt that a lot of information on social media was incredibly inaccurate especially the way perfectionist is used. Naranjo adds nuance establishing perfectionism as a symptom of anxiety, need for ethical conviction, and fear of lacking control. It was a lot less perscriptive than e1's being the perfectionist, neat freak, self righteous person. It understood that perfection is subjective to the e1's individualized vision. One of the best parts of the book was the fact that it braught in annecdotal evidence through quotes of the many collaborators. I enjoyed the breakdowns per chapter of a subtypes childhood, personality, and relation to those around it. I use typology as a system, an understanding of my attitudinal and personal tendencies. Having a book not only explain how e1's act as well as give succinct solutions in hopes of improvement was a practical and absolutely necessary aspect. The shortcomings of the book really came down to generalizations and rigid use of gender roles. Granted, I did use a translated version, so I understand that pronouns are miscontrued and at an extreme mistranslated. For me the problems came when the pronouns switched from he to she, where the female e1 was explained in a different dichotomy and in accordance to traditional feminine gender roles, particularly nuturing and household domestic labor. I can understand the purpose of establishing how e1's can act due to femine upbringing especially in traditional households but it did feel a bit dated. I will also note that the pronouns he are used a lot and she is used less frequently. Readers who go into this book must understand that the societal standards are in accordance to southern america and europe which often has more patriarchal values than modern spaces. Despite this incongruence, I found the book to be incredibly pragmatic, applicable, and helpful for E1s in every capacity. Highly recommend for those looking for deeper analysis and understnading of the e1's as a whole.
