Ink & Intimacy #1

Canvas of Our Souls

Leilani

One fateful night, I stumbled into his tattoo parlor, my heart shattered by betrayal.
Kade Alvarez, the brooding artist with ink-covered skin and haunted eyes.
He's dangerous, a bad boy with a reputation that should send me running.
But I'm drawn to his darkness, to the pain that mirrors my own.
He sees through my facades, awakening desires I've never dared to explore.
I know I should resist him, guard what's left of my broken heart.
But with every touch, every searing kiss, I'm falling deeper under his spell.
Loving Kade could be my salvation or my ultimate destruction.

Kade

She walked into my shop like a lost angel, all wide-eyed innocence and hidden scars.
I should send her away, protect her from the beast that lurks beneath my ink.
But I crave her light, her goodness, even as I long to taint it.
I want to mark her skin, claim her body and soul.
I've never let a woman get close, never believed in the lie of love.
Yet with Leilani, I find myself yearning for more than just fleeting pleasure.
She's my sweet addiction, tempting me to crash against the rocks of my own damnation.
I know I'll ruin her, but I can't stay away, even if it destroys us both in the end.

In the steamy streets of Miami, two damaged hearts collide, igniting a firestorm of passion and pain. Can Kade and Leilani heal each other's wounds, or will their pasts tear them apart forever?

A Note to Readers: While 'Canvas of Our Souls' tackles heavy subjects and intense emotions, it is not a traditional dark romance. This book is about the light that can be found in even the darkest of places, and the transformative power of love and healing. If you're looking for a gritty, explicit read, this may not be the book for you.

I should send her away, protect her from the beast that lurks beneath my ink. But I crave her light.

Dark romance can be interpreted in many ways, and despite this not having the tradtionally dark themes attached to a dark romance book, it has dark and heavy subjects about trauma, attached to a beautiful story about healing.

Kade and Leilani take you on a dual POV journey between the past and present of their lives to learn their story and watch them unite over their traumas. You feel so many emotions on their journey, as their characters develop, and their trauma is revealed. It is when these two meet, that they come alive, otherwise they are just existing.

This story was beautifully written, and I hope to see more from Fortuna in the future.

Tropes:
- Second chance
- Trauma bonding/healing
- Strong FMC
- Family drama

Kade & Leilani: Perfectly Imperfect Soulmates! 5 Stars!

Once in a while, if you're lucky, you come across a book that speaks to your very romantic soul. I was fortunate enough to have found this one.

CANVAS OF OUR SOULS introduces us to two people struggling with personal issues within themselves. First, we meet Kade Alvarez, a young, handsome tattoo artist with a strained relationship with his immediate family. In addition to dealing with an intense family dynamic, Kade is also dealing with post-traumatic stress. To cope, he finds solace from his emotional pain through alcohol, drugs, and meaningless entanglements with women just as dysfunctional as he.

Next, we meet Leilani Zaragosa, a young, beautiful fashion stylist trying to carve her own niche in the fashion industry. Leilani is a dreamer. She dreams of success in every aspect of her life, professionally and personally. She is in a relationship with a man named Kyle, who is also in the same industry. What was once an awesome relationship between these two has turned sour. Kyle has been distancing himself more and more from Leilani and she feels very insecure considering the amount of beautiful women Kyle encounters on a daily basis. In addition to feeling insecure about her relationship, she is also very insecure about her designs and career, causing her severe stress and anxiety.

Ironically, these two tortured souls have one common denominator: Kyle. Kyle is Leilani's emotionally distant boyfriend and Kade's goading, emotionally unsupportive younger brother.

A twist of fate brings these Kade and Leilani together and they experience a whirlwind romance of epic proportions! In light of them finding solace in one another, will their love be enough to withstand the demons of Kade's past and the threats of the present that vow to tear them apart?

Author Fortuna Lux is brilliant in this very stunning novel about two people who find each other and heal one another on the strength of their love. Lux tackles the serious topics of physical abuse, alcoholism, and drug use with sincerity and sensitivity. CANVAS OF OUR SOULS could not have been released at a better time, as May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In CANVAS, we have two characters from two very different walks of life suffering from mental health issues. Kade suffers from Survivor's Guilt and Leilani suffers from Imposter Syndrome. These are two very common mental health concerns that many of us have experienced. This makes Lux's characters even more relatable to every reader who has ever felt guilt from walking away from a tragedy unscathed or wrestled with lingering feelings of doubt in their own successes and triumphs. Kade and Leilani are each other's tether to sanity and to see them both come to each other's rescue throughout this novel was rewarding and made my heart sing.

The chemistry between these two characters was phenomenal, each in their own right. I loved them separately before they appeared on page together! When they finally did meet, it was explosive fireworks that tugged at my heartstrings whereas, I needed to make a break for the Kleenex! Their love scenes were sweet & spicy. The further you read into this story, the deeper you fall under their spell. There were so many moments while reading where I became choked up and the tears welled in my eyes. Their connection was just... right... and it will feel RIGHT to you as the reader.

There has been some issue as to whether or not this book was mislabeled as a "Dark Romance". While this may not be considered a "dark romance" in the traditional sense, I think we all can agree that the subject matter of mental illness is a dark and sometimes triggering one. We need to normalize when dark themes and dark subject matter are centered around a romance, it is indeed a dark romance. Mentally, Kade and Leilani begin this book in the dark. Throughout their journey together, they begin to step out into the light and when they are out, they shine.... they shine like diamonds and it's simply magical.

I can go on and on about the wonderful scenes, characters, and compelling storyline throughout CANVAS OF OUR SOULS, but I fear I would not do it enough justice. Fortuna Lux's debut novel is extraordinary, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for her readers next. This novel has made me one of her readers for as long as she continues to share her stories.

If you are seeking two MMCs with a true, undeniable, 'irrevocably-yours' type of love in a romance novel with a story that will make you believe in a forever love, please read this book. Once you begin reading, it will seem as if this story was crafted especially for you. That's exactly how I felt.

Fortuna Lux, well done! You hit this one out of the park! I can't wait to see what you release next!

Happy reading!

Canvas of Our Souls is Fortuna’s debut novel. I thoroughly, enjoyed this book. There were a few times throughout I was a little thrown off but it didn’t take away from the story. It is described as a dark romance, however in my opinion I would not consider it to be dark. It has some elements that can be triggering to others, and before deciding to pick up Canvas of Our Souls, you should glance over that shopping list.
This, was an emotional read, where you can feel the inner turmoil, pain and struggle that invades the psyche of the MMC Kade and FMC Leilani. A read, on the struggle and challenges of overcoming and healing from past and present trauma that both the FMC and MMC endure.
The beginning of the book starts with the past that works it way up to the present. In my opinion, Canvas of Our Souls was a well thought out story. One in which I would recommend to other readers. I did, however wish that there was more details on the steps that the characters took to heal, that the characters would have taken time to work on themselves before jumping into a serious relationship and pushing their struggles to the back burner to put their partners healing before their own. (I seen it, as kind of a distraction to keep them from working on their own self.)
I did, see the character growth of both Leilani, Kade and Mariana (Kade’s mother) within the story from beginning to end. I found, the story to have mild spice, which in my opinion was a little closed door. I was more invested in the healing and growth of the characters than the spice element.
Canvas of Our Souls was a fast read for me, that kept me invested. I will, most definitely read more stories that Fortuna writes. Congratulations on your debut novel.

"Canvas of Our Souls" by Fortuna Lux is an enthralling romance that plunges readers into the steamy streets of Miami, where two damaged souls, Leilani and Kade, collide in a whirlwind of passion and pain.

The novel's unique writing style initially takes some getting used to, but as the story unfolds, readers will find themselves immersed in the intricacies of Leilani and Kade's inner worlds. This book is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of love. It's a story of hope, redemption, and the healing that comes from finding solace in each other's arms. SPOILER:
Leilani, nursing a shattered heart and hidden scars, finds herself drawn to Kade, the brooding artist with ink-covered skin and haunted eyes. Despite the warnings of his dangerous reputation, she can't resist the pull of his darkness, nor the awakening desires he stirs within her.
Kade, grappling with his demons and a lifetime of mistrust, struggles to reconcile his longing for Leilani's light with his fear of tainting it. Yet, their connection deepens with every touch and searing kiss, leading them on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Fortuna's writing style in this book really shown how detailed she is in showing emotions through her characters, word choices and made this book something I did not expect AT ALL. I went into it a bit blind and can say this book really broke my heart at some points, especially with Kade & Leilani's trauma that they're both working towards getting over.

Trigger warnings, this story is HEAVY on the trauma and does detail some topics that may be a trigger for readers. In a sense, I loved the reality of the story itself because of it. I really resonated with Kade and having a family that is estranged, the negative sides to addiction and how that trauma can really affect someone in all aspects of their life. It wasn't a super dark romance (besides the triggers), but was still a romance story that I loved! I never hated a male character so much in my life when it came to books, but Kyle took the cake. UGHHHH. Can't stand him. I loved the storyline and the chance meeting between Kade & Leilani really setting the tone for a beautiful love story with the aspect of healing. Overall, really great, minimal spice and beautiful storyline!

I’m struggling to put into words how beautiful this book was
This was such a deep and emotional story that struck my heart
The relationship between Leilani and Kade was so touching and had me teary eyed and also swooning
Fortuna Lux creates a beautiful story that shows that spice in books can also be sweet and meaningful and add to the storyline
I really enjoyed seeing character growth throughout a book and witnessing a character work to be better and also appreciate that growth doesn’t happen overnight and it is a process.
Canvas of our souls also touches on some heavy topics which might be hard for some to read so would recommend checking the warnings before reading but I felt that Fortuna Luc handled the discussion and writing of these topics well
I also am a sucker for a happy ending !

Fortuna has taken a leap into the writing world and what a fantastic debut she has created.

This story follows Kade and Leilani two lost and damaged souls. Each experience a different past trauma and how they are not really living life they are basically just existing. That is until they meet.

I enjoyed the dual POV and the timeline so you are able to see the past and lead up to the here and now. I also loved how Fortuna was able to write the raw emotions and definitely pulled on the heartstrings, each page had you feeling for these characters.

There are some topics that may be sensitive to some, so please check those before diving in.

Again a fantastic debut from Fortuna. Definitely recommend for those who enjoy emotional reads.

This is a story that isn’t necessarily dark but more realistic in the struggles that the characters struggle with. Leilani an aspiring fashion designer loves her boyfriend Kyle and while red flags and distance is becoming an issue she knows he is just working hard and there is nothing to worry about. Kade has been struggling with a trauma from his past and the best way to silence the ghost is by drowning them in his addictions, after trying to pull his self out and focus on his tattooing he is trying to live a better life. On a chance run in after a drunk night out when Leilani find Kyle in a bad situation she decides she needs a tattoo for a reminder that she will rise above this. This chance encounter starts Leilani and Kades story.

I started this book thinking it was a spicy dark romance but I wouldn’t call it a dark romance and there’s not much spice to me. It kept my attention though which doesn’t happen often if theres not much spice and the book isn’t dark but their story is really good. It’s not dark to me but there is some things in the book that may be triggering to some people. This is another new author for me. There was some parts of the book that had me a little confused and some parts that had me going back to see if I missed something somewhere. She did really good with Kade and his mother’s addiction and recovery and everything else having to do with that. This is a good book, I love Kade and Leilani’s story and that they got their HEA after everything they both went through together and separately.

OK… Where to start… These characters are absolutely fantastic. I fell in love with both of them from the very beginning. They seemed like real people with real problems and that’s not something I see a lot. I loved seeing that Kade and Leilani weren’t perfect and that their problems weren’t easily fixed. There was a bunch of character growth throughout the book, which I absolutely appreciated. Kyle is a tool.… And I’m glad he got what he did…
My only issue with the book was that the timeline was a little wonky and it could’ve used a little polishing but it doesn’t pull me out of the story enough for me to not rate this a five.
I can’t wait to see which couple we see next because I’m invested in all of the relationships that were blooming at the end of the book .

Canvas of Our Souls is a novel written by Fortuna Lux. This is a new author for me.

This is the story of Leilani (MFC) who is an aspiring fashion designer and is in love with her boyfriend Kyle. However, their relationship is showing signs of failing and they are both aware of their issues. After a rough night with Kyle, Leilani wants a tattoo and this is how she meets Kade. This chance meeting is how they start their relationship. It is when these two meet they come alive otherwise they are just existing. Both of them are fighting battles and have scars that they have to overcome. Lots of twists and turns with emotional swings.

Two incredibly tortured souls. They've both had their own troubles and wars that they've faced. Scars, hurt and pain is left. This story is the trials that they face, both together and alone.
The style of writing used in this book isn't one I've really read before and, in all honesty, took me a minute to get in the rhythm of. But as I got further in and got into the groove, I could finally appreciate what the story really was.
Now that I've finished, I really enjoyed it. The different writing focused on the characters more on their own inner demons rather than their overall love story. It was a really lovely change and a gorgeous read.

" I know it won't be easy. We both have our scars, our baggage. There will be obstacles to overcome and demons to battle.
But for the first time in recent memory, I find myself truly excited for the future. Hopeful and energised in a way I can't remember ever feeling before.
Because now...I have something - someone - to fight for. A reason to be a better man"

"It won't be a fairytale. We'll argue and curse and lick each other's wounds clean. There will be tears and dark nights of the soul.
But brick by precious brick, I'll build us a love that can weather any storm. A partnership, a shelter. A home."

The plot is a good one but it was thrown together quickly it seems at times throughout the book, so it has a some plot holes.
It's not so much a dark romance as it says, but it is a romance book and a good one.
I love the characters. I hate but love how they came to meet one another. I wish they of had another run in before the blind date. I do wish thgh it was explained more on how Leilani & Kade got to the blind date part, I know it was from her sister, but I would've loved to see more climbing up to that part. But all in all a pretty good read.

It had a slow start but about a quarter into the story things get going. Kade and Lei and both suffering from their own past hurts. His being more damaging, having no real support system like she does with her sisters. Plus he harbors a lot of guilt where she is dealing with betrayal and not feeling good enough. They each are dealing a lot, both broken in different ways but have a common person who contributed to their pain. It is not dark per se but does has things that may be a trigger for people. Nonetheless a good read.

This was by far, such a great and emotional read! It is a little dark. There are a few triggers, or maybe elements that may trigger others…”wink”… lol but I loved it! Triggers and all!

The Character build up was pretty good. I really loved the challenges being thrown at them and how they overcame and eventually healed from their traumas. I do wish there was a lot more spice lol just for me at least, but it was still a beautiful book that really grabs your attention! I read it in less than a day. So yes it’s a quick read and for a debut book… I highly recommend it!!!!

This is the first book I've read by this author, and although at first I struggled with the store and the characters, by 25% I was finally able to emmerse myself in the story, in the characters and found myself engrossed in the pages.

I enjoyed how the story focused on Kade and Lellani's scars and wounds as opposed to just focusing solely on their love story.

As a whole I'd rate it a solid 4 stars!

The beginning was about the past it dragged alittle . And it took awhile to pull me in.
The overall story tho? I truly loved it !
Not triggering , and not as dark as i wanted/thought it would be.
I love Kade, with all my heart and soul.
I truly think it should’ve been DARKER, because of both of their backgrounds but it was enjoyable ✨

My first book by Fortuna Lux.
This book is heavy with emotional struggles throughout, so check the warnings.

A deep dive into addiction, trauma from a young age and over coming it. This book touches on the reality of everyday life for a large percentage of the world.

FMC deals with her own past, imposter syndrome in her career and heartbreak.
MMC deals with broken family trauma, a horrific accident in his teenage years, depression as well as addiction for himself and another family member.

A good book that hits the soul.

Everyone needs a man like Kade Alvarez! What I liked most about this story is that the characters are real and you can really understand their motivations and struggles. Kade and Leilani earned their happily ever after, and it wasn't always sunshine and roses to get there. Also, I'm always here for a tattooed MMC!

Kade the tattoo artist, and Leilani, the up and coming fashion designer. I really appreciate a book when they go into details. Kade and Leilani were able to show their feelings towards each other and get lost in the moment and forget everyone around them. Kade and Leilani share such a great spark and connection. I do feel like the jumps in the books made it feel like I was missing things between them. With so many feelings involved, when a couple weeks to a month go by, I feel like something is off. I enjoyed the book overall and would tell others to read it. I wouldn't say it's a dark romance but it does touch on some sensitive topics, so please read trigger warnings

Beginning of the book was hard to follow. But soon after it got better. Story follows healing two tortured souls from their previous trauma. How actually hard it can be. Temptation to slip back always lurking somewhere close. Storyline was interesting to read. Pretty fast read actually. Not that dark how I was expecting, but still goooood! Some chapters felt like it was missing some closure and jumped to other chapter with couple days after.
But overall this book for sure is good for romance readers who want to try some darker romance without diving to deep in the darkness. It’s like warm up. And it’s what we need.
