There is so much pain! Nora has been through so much and I might argue that she’s been to hell and back more than any other character I’ve met. But in her world full of shadows and monsters, she somehow managed to find the light and fight back! The last couple of chapters have me shocked. I am so anxious to read the next book 😫

This story is like nothing I’ve read before and it’s been an incredible experience. Celeana has created this space for us to escape to and find strength even when it feels like there is no way to make it out of the dark.

Better!

Ok so the first book I’ll be honest- very little fantasy and a little gory which I don’t do gore- I love dark but gore not so much. But of course setting up! Ok now I totally get this is in the fantasy genre, still good but so many questions and if looking for HEA- nope. Can’t give anymore as to not spoil but the heartache in book 1 definitely leads to book 2 and hope will be tied up in book 3.

Multiple POVs

Cages and Crowns picks up where book one, Glass and Bone, leaves off. Only this time, instead of only Elaenor's first person narrative, we get multiple character POVs. What's unique about the POVs, is that the author doesn't write the name of the character at the chapter header, but gives them all a title instead- such as "The Caged" or "The Protector". It's quick to figure out who's who and I liked that mystery.

We leave off with Elaenor being held captive by her sadist husband. However, across the continent, her mysterious protector, Enzo, and his friends are racing to rescue Elaenor. Upon rescue, Elaenor is faced with the answers to the questions surrounding her mother, her mother's death, her paternity, and they mysterious white light coming off her fingers.

Overall, I really enjoyed Book 2. Elaenor's growth for me is what I was missing in Book 1 but I get it now! I also really liked the different POVs this time around. It kept me engrossed in the story and I read the whole thing in day. I've been routing for Elaenor the whole time and Book 2 felt like she was finally bringing us to her being the badass we know she could be.

However, these books keep ending on these cliffhangers and I don't know how to feel after this one. It just destroyed me.

2.5 ⭐️ I have so many feelings about this book. There were parts that were good, but I was getting whiplash between Tobias and Eleanor. Eleanor finally gets away from him and can’t stop thinking about him. I understand she young and has endured so much trauma, but I was hoping the book would move on from that and it didn’t. I feel like so much happened, and yet nothing at the same time.

I was hoping for more development from Eleanor, but it didn’t come. I wanted to be able to root for nithe, but he kept doing fuckboy shit. Eleanor’s cousin? Not a girls girl. Every character that was supposed to be “good” just wasn’t. They didn’t form a good team, United. Overall, it didn’t carry the same shock factor as book 1.

READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS!!
Seriously I can’t stress that enough . This is a dark fantasy series . Probably one of the darkest fantasy books Iv ever read .

That being said I couldn’t put this book down . Eleanor has been through every hell you could ever imagine and as we watch her struggle we also glimpse he starting to heal and become the bad ass I know she can be .

Tropes :
Arranged marriage
Humans vs magical beings
Healing
Trauma
Forced proximity
Dark fantasy
Cliffhanger

The one thing I love/hate with this series is idk who to root for as the love interest and everytime I find one to fall for something changes 🤦‍♀️😅 this series keeps me on my toes and I’m so excited for the next book ! That cliffhanger is killing me

Potential spoiler next !!

Honestly this book would have been a 5⭐️ read for me however I didn’t like what Ninthe did with Emery ( I don’t want to get into it for spoilers ) but that really rubbed me the wrong was and hope somehow in the next book it’s brought up and stated something else happened .. idk but i REALLY didn’t like that

Celaena has done it again! Things get crazy FAST! Although I’m ready and waiting to see Nora enter her bad bitch era, it didn’t happen as quickly as I would like but I respect that and I know it’s coming. I feel like this book was even more of an emotional roller coaster than Glass and Bone, however, the ending is not necessarily as heart wrenching as Glass and Bone but it will leave your jaw on the floor, and searching for the non-existent hidden pages in the back if you know what I mean… I will say , things happen in this book that left me slightly nauseous because the descriptions are so detailed you can almost feel it happening to you. Glass and Bone is a must if you haven’t read it yet, in order to follow the story. You will not regret it.

“Cages and Crowns” is a dark fantasy story, and in most fantasy books, there are often unique names that are challenging to pronounce. I must say that I appreciated the pronunciation guide in the front. It’s the little things for me because I would still say Dee-Moz instead of Day-MOS throughout the story. But I digress.

I love how “Cages and Crowns” pulls you in immediately. Author Celaena Cuico provides a clear visual through written words. The plot is fascinating, fast-paced, and full of action; however, it is intensely dark with themes I haven’t read in other typical fantasy stories. There are graphic scenes, and the TW/CWs are pretty straightforward. The characters are written very well and weave well through the plot line. I enjoyed this book.

I’m sending my therapy bill to Cel. I have been in a complete book slump since finishing it.

I know this is a series so of course it will have cliffhangers at the end. What I loved about this is the plot twists. And when you think you know something is going to happen one way, it goes a completely different direction & the shock factor is just 😳. That’s a phenomenal book in my personal opinion.

I. Can’t. Stop. Thinking. About. This. Damn. Book.

It is a complete emotional rollercoaster. Elenor, poor Elenor has been through so so much. Definitely check your TWs because your mental health matters.

This book is SO! DAMN! GOOD! The first book shattered my heart and the second one obliterated all the pieces. Nora goes through so much yet somehow finds the strength to persevere even in moments that are so dark. The first part pulls you down so low, while the second part gives you a light of hope, which made the end that much more shocking and painful. Nithe is a breath of fresh air. Elaenor is so resilient and when she takes back her power, she’s incredible.

This book left me feeling numb, it took me a few days to process everything and I still think about Nora. The story is so unique, this is the type of book that stays with you long after you put it down. I can not wait for the next book!

This book has some heavy triggers, please be mindful of what you can handle, there are some extremely dark moments. Take care of your mental health.

Haunting and Hypnotic..

Cages and Crowns doesn't just continue the series—it grabs you by the hair, punches you in the face, drags you through the shadows, and leaves you begging for mercy. With a story that refuses to offer solace or redemption, this book weaves a tale that is both haunting and hypnotic.

Celaena Cuico delivers.. Character development in this book is off the charts. I'm talking deep, soul searching stuff that will make you question everything you thought you knew.. It's like this author has a direct line to my emotions. The prose is so vivid, so visceral.. you feel as though you are there with them in the thick of it, sword in had, ready to face whatever horrors lie ahead. The pacing of the story is spot-on, just when you think you can catch your breath, Celaena hits you with another twist that sends you hurtling off in a whole new direction.

Now, consider yourself warned: there are no fairy godmothers or charming princes here, sweet readers. Nope, just a whole lot of brooding, betrayal, and bloodshed. But hey, who needs sunshine and rainbows when you've got dragons, evil kings, and dark magic, am I right?

What sets this book apart is its unflinching commitment to realism, even in the face of fantastical elements. The characters are not spared from the harsh realities of their world, and their struggles are depicted with raw honesty and emotional depth. There are no easy victories or last-minute rescues here.

In the end, this book is more than a mere story—it is an EXPERIENCE that will leave you reeling long after the final page has been turned. So buckle up, buttercup, if you've got the guts to dive into the darkness, I promise you won't be disappointed.
I can not recommend this series enough.. Beautiful.

I am sitting here just staring and in denial. Celaena, why do you do this to us? And why do we love it?

This story is heartbreakingly awful from start to finish. My heart has been torn out, stomped on and then burned to ash (am I selling you on it yet? Hang tight, it's coming).

That being said. The JOURNEY that we go on is unlike any other. We feel Elaenor's pain, we witness her resolve, we triumph has she tries to find herself beyond all obstacles in her way.

Elaenor does not live an easy life, nor does she live a life full of hope or kindness. She lives a life of being used and taken advantage of to the point where she can no longer trust. But through it all, Elaenor remains kind, and she is always looking for hope.

The world building expands and we get to meet some more characters and experience their POV. It added to the story in a way that made us dive deeper into the world and immerse ourselves in all of the characters. There are some good and kind people in Elaenor's world, it just takes her awhile to find them.

The writing in this story was beautiful. I felt drawn in and I wasn't let back out until I finished.

Even at points where I wasn't reading. Even in the most horrific moments (and it's Celaena, so there are a handful of those), I couldn't take my eyes off the page because of how powerful the writing was.

I'm again going to caution the reader to check the triggers ahead of time. If you are comfortable reading ahead, I can say with absolute certainty you will love this Dark Fantasy and it will sit with you long, LONG after you have completed.

Overall: Highly Recommend

This is a DARK fantasy series, I’m not sure I would even call it a dark romantasy - read and recognize the triggers!! (Probably the darkest I have read). That being said… it’s a wild and intriguing ride if you’re up for it. I was REALLY hoping for more redemption and revenge in this one, but I ended up really appreciating the unfolding of the story. You are not going to get quick resolutions or easily cleaned up plot lines. The story is SO well thought out and not easily predicted. I still don’t know exactly who I’m ‘rooting’ for especially as a love interest. This story will keep you up at night, in a good way. I actually had to wait two days to write this review because of alllll the feelings. If you read book 1 and are wondering if you should continue PLEASE DO, it will be good for you to keep going haha. If you are reading these reviews wondering if the series is worth the ride, IT IS.

This story will break your heart but the journey is worth it and it really stands out in the fantasy genre.

(**slight spoiler - why does Nithe have to do us dirty like that with xxxx?!?! Probably broke my heart more than anything and that’s saying something.. someone please tell me this will be resolved somehow😭**).

Eleanor’s journey continues in Cages and Crowns and Celaena does an amazing job with mental health representation. My heart was broken for Nora. But there were beautiful moments as well that brought the characters together and made the story fuller. Nora truly shows her strength in this book, though it may look different than you’d expect.

I adored the inclusion of more of Scarlet’s point of view and her journey and the complexities of her relationships she built. Enzo was more in line with what I was expecting but with some additions I didn’t think of and was surprised at how well he was developed in interesting ways. Nithe was an excellent addition to the storyline and I can’t wait to see what he does in the next book.

Overall, the story had me completely enraptured from the beginning. The hurt, the trauma, the love, the friendships, and the trust building all rolled into one really made this one of my favorite books this year.

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of this book! Thank you Celaena!

I finished this book and had to process it for a bit before I was able to review it. If you don't like dark books, this is NOT the book for you. It's definitely important to check the trigger warnings before reading.

Celaena has done it again, continuing on the haunting story of Eleanor. This book was even better than the first! I'm trying not to spoil the story at all so I'm not going into detail, but things truly do get entirely worse for Eleanor, she goes through so much in this book. We are also introduced to some new point of view characters in this installation of The Diadem and it really elevated the story.

This installment added an interesting magic system to the story that was definitely hinted at during the first book. The end left me reeling, such a surprise and Cliffhanger- really hoping we don't have to wait too long to see what happens next!

This was better than the first honestly. I vibed a ton more. Eleanore is slowly working on becoming stronger and trying to stop being a pawn. There were so many plot twists and I couldn’t put it down. Unfortunately this ends on a massive cliffhanger so I’m yet again waiting for more 🥲.

READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS (this review contains spoilers from Glass and Bone)

While I didn't find this book AS dark as Glass and Bone, it was still dark.

You honestly couldn't have paid me money to wait to read this after how Glass and Bone ended, our girl Celaena LOVES a cliffhanger and be warned, this book is no different🥲

We start by following Nora as she is in the middle of picking her life back up after losing Theo and still being in the clutches of Tobias. My heart absolutely breaks for Nora, she can't seem to catch a break and she just doesn't realise how powerful she is. She endures so much in Cages and Crowns, but is this the beginning of her entering her Jennifer's Body era? I hope so! I loved it and I just have so much space and love in my heart for Nora.

The part I loved most about this book was how well Nora's trauma was written. It was written realistically. It wasn't glossed over or romanticised, we actually see what it's like being in the mind of a horrific DV and abuse victim. It's real, it's raw and it's heartbreaking to read. Even after everything she endured, her saying she still loved Tobias absolutely broke me 😭😭

I loved the addition of the extra POVs, each chapter didn't have the characters names and because I'm not that quick, it was a little difficult to follow whose POV was whose but I picked it up eventually 😂 It was great seeing the scene pan out through a couple of different eyes.

If you love

🖤 Forced Proximity

You will absolutely love this book and I will never stop recommending this series! 🖤

*please check your trigger warnings*

This is one of the most beautiful dark fantasy series I’ve read to date. The twist and turns, the magic system, the feminine rage. If I could rate it infinity stars, I would! Definitely a 5 star read for me! @celaenacuico just has a unique and beautiful way of writing. It didn’t feel like I was reading. It just flowed so well, and I felt like I was right there in the story, feeling everything the characters were feeling.

There was a moment in this book where I genuinely felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was right there with Elaenor feeling every bit of terror and pain she was feeling. It was so haunting. To me, that’s how you know an author wrote an incredible book.

Elaenor is such a strong young woman thrown from kingdom to kingdom, enduring more trauma and hardships than anyone young woman should. Yet, she remains strong. Unyielding. That’s not to say that Elaenor doesn’t have moments of panic, terror, or breakdowns. As someone who has been through similar things as Elaenor, the way Celaena wrote the after effects of her trauma was so realistic. So heartbreaking, yet healing. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone.

If you read the first book in the series Glass and Bone, you know this author isn’t known for her happy endings. This one is no different. There are no white knights, or magical saviors. It is a dark fantasy that will have you stunned, and feeling the effects days after the book is done. Celaena has created one of the most intense, and heartbreaking stories and I will never stop recommending it to anyone I can.

Book two in the Diadem series went full-blown dark fantasy and I’m so here for it. Our dear Queen Elaenor went through so much more than anyone ever should all throughout book one. When this book starts out she is fighting to keep not only her sanity but also her life at the hands of her psychopathic husband. She is put through so much torture and struggles but tries desperately to hold on.

Meanwhile behind the scenes there are so many trying to do what they can to rescue her. They know she is important for their future even if only a few know the true extent of that importance. There are so many twists and turns, secrets and lies, love and family, right alongside loyalty and betrayal.

The magical fantasy aspect goes up by several levels from where we were in book one. Elaenor was so sheltered growing up that she had no idea what other countries, peoples, and unique beings existed in the world around her. So as time goes on during this book, we learn about those things with her. We’re right there as she starts to learn more about exactly who and what she actually it.

I won’t give away any twists or surprises because you really have to experience them for yourselves. This is an intense story that left me craving more while also (once again) asking myself what did I just read… and when can I read the next book. Check the triggers and be prepared for another cliffhanger to keep you on the edge of your seat for the next one.

I have been super lucky in being able to arc read both books in this series so far so THANK YOU CELAENA!!!!!
Before I start, please read the trigger warnings before diving in!

Eleanor thought she was free. For one precious second, she had hope, until Tobias tore it all down in front of her.

Months later she wishes she could escape into the sweet embrace of death - death never came. Help was waiting in the wings, looking for any sign that she could be saved.

The things that Eleanor had to go through in this book were harrowing and I don't think I have wanted to murder a fictional character so much since Jack Barlowe graced the pages of Fourth Wing.

She was left beaten, broken and bruised almost daily by the one person who was supposed to love her more than anything. If that's not bad enough, he turned a blind eye when others did the same. But she survived through it all which was an absolute miracle in itself. It was inspiring to see that no matter how much they tried to break her, she didn't give in. She bided her time until she could break free.

I cried, I laughed, I cheered and I damn near threw my Kindle across the room at the ending. Celaena, you are a wicked mastermind with words and you have woven a world that is amazing and dark from which I can't turn away even if I wanted to!

While I was reading this book, I had to stop reading just to soak in how amazing and talented Cel is! You can feel her passion for the story and the characters throughout the whole book. This is the best book she has written thus far and I cannot even express how BEYOND proud of her I am! As traumatic as this book is, it’s amazing!

Now this is the second book in the Diadem Series and it is a doozy. There is no sunshine or rainbows here. Trauma after trauma after… you guessed it more trauma. Poor Elaenor cannot catch a break!

We were introduced to multiple POVs in this book though which I absolutely loved! You meet new characters…**cough cough… Nithe** who is a doll and nothing better happen to him! There is also magic and dragons as well!

There were so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming at all! That ending… 🤯🤬😱

This book comes out in just a couple weeks so you have time to read book one, Glass and Bone on kindle unlimited before it comes out! It’s one of my top reads this year!! I hope you love it as much as I do!

This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire way through and then the ending literally left me shocked with no words. I've waited to write my review cause I wasn't sure how to process the ending but honestly I am still not sure how to process it. There is a major cliffhanger at the end of this book and a turn you will not see coming. I love how I never know what to expect in this series and when I think I have it figured out the rug is ripped out from under me!! The writing style is to die for.....

Nora is never able to catch a break. Each time she feels she can even begin to trust someone they show her why she shouldn't. I was really hoping Nithe would turn everything around for her but the man definitely makes some poor decisions....well quite a few of them make poor choices and there's always a secret to unravel. Certain relations took me for a loop when they were announced and I am not quite sure why I was completely shocked when I read it. Please add this series to your TBR!! It's a DARK romantasy series you don't want to miss out on!!!!

This book hurts, the emotional whiplash had me constantly questioning who should we root for, who really is the love interest, is there even supposed to be a love interest, who needs revenge, who needs some sense slapped into them, how many villains are really in this book? Not only does my heart break for our FMC and her devastating trauma, but many of the other characters are dealing with their own trauma. This was a roller coaster of a ride, to say the least, but well worth the journey. Do I want a happily ever after in book 3? Of course I do, but this Celaena's creation, she holds the pen, and I am along for this unpredictable ride.
Please note that this is a VERY dark fantasy, please, for your mental health, check your triggers.
Also please note... possible spoiler...

That ending... that cliffhanger... I don't know how to process what just happened. Even after all the twists and turns throughout the book (and there are a LOT of them!) I was taken completely by surprise with that ending and I am going to need the third book asap.

This is a brilliant sequel to Glass and Bone, and I love the alternating povs allowing for the opportunity to see and understand more of what's happening than if every chapter was Elaenor's pov. It is also nice to swap out of her pov at times because oh boy that is HEAVY. Please, please check the trigger warnings before you start - it is a dark fantasy and is indeed very dark, and very raw.

No matter what happens though, Elaenor somehow endures, showing a true inner strength, and I am really looking forward to seeing what the future holds as she takes back the power that so many have tried to take from her.

Wow…. Once again Celaena you have broken my heart into tiny pieces and then proceeded to jump up and down on it.

What a second installment of this series! I absolutely loved it.

I really do enjoy the writing style in this book, it sucked me in and kept me captivated throughout. I enjoyed the new characters and the fact that we went a bit more fantasy in this book. I was pleased with how the mystery surrounding Nora was answered. The world was flushed out more and you get to see new places.

It is interesting that the more I read the more I realized that there is not a truly “good” character among any of them. They all have flaws and I really enjoyed that.

That ending…. I was not expecting that and I am still in shock! I am seriously interested to see how this series continues!!
