The 30 years following The Revolutionary War in North America had ushered in relative peace and prosperity across the continent. In the year 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte and his conquest of Europe was at the forefront of British minds, meanwhile the newly formed United States saw an opportunity to push the British out of North America altogether. Years of blockades, sieges, and impressment on the seas were persuading President James Madison and the Americans to declare war against King George III and his colonies.
The Niagara area was the borderland and frontier between nations, separated by a cascading river and unforgiving landscape. 1812: The Niagara Frontier follows the lives of citizens, soldiers, leaders, and warriors as they are confronted with the harsh realities of war in such a tumultuous time. It will be the actions and determinations of people like Laura Secord, Isaac Brock, Winfield Scott, and John Norton that will help forge the destiny of North America in the centuries to come.
One thing about historical fiction is that you never know how much is actual history and how much is fiction. The story is engaging but it feels to me there were opportunities for more. Characters could have been given more depth, especially couples. Though it is about the Niagara region, the burning of the White House could have more than 4 lines.
A neat look into the minds of people living on the frontline of war. Back then it seems they would go to war for any reason. Sad that Canada and the US came to blows...very easy read. Recommend for any history buff or military book lover. Cannons, muskets, and seafaring, who could ask for anything more?
Great, exciting read. Fast-paced interpretation of the War of 1812. Much more interesting than several other books I've read. Mowat handled the characters with sensitivity and charisma which made the entire experience enjoyable. I look forward to his next work.
I wish that this was a book for grade 10 history in high school. Having grown up in Niagara, this would have piqued my interest in Canadian history way better than copying overheads! Easy to read and so many great historical figures.
This was a fresh take on the War of 1812. It was nice to be on the frontier with such engaging characters. Such an important time in North American history! Peace ever since!
Really interesting stories from both sides of the border. Such a complex time. Really enjoyed Mowat's style as he makes the material accessible and enjoyable.
