Gwen “Love hits you when you least expect it…” I never understood how true of a saying that was until my fiance slapped me for the first time. After hitting rock bottom and finally accepting help, I found myself a new job in a different state. Becoming a live-in nanny, I fell in love with the little boy in my care, determined to protect him from the cruelty of the world. His distant father even started to grow on me.
Anthony hid a piece of himself though, a kind of darkness that should have me running in the opposite direction. Instead, it was that other side of him that could be the only chance I had to survive when I was forced to relive my past in the worst way possible. Would I be able to trust him enough to come for me when I need him the most, or would I be forced to make a choice between life and death?
Anthony After finding out my ex-wife loved booze and drugs more than our son, I found myself raising him on my own and making his safety my number one priority. Being both a dad and a detective with the Special Victims Unit was becoming increasingly difficult. Each day I found it harder to keep my anger at bay, even with using the worthless men my job has me crossing paths with as human punching bags. I needed help… and fast.
That was when Gwendalyn walked into our lives, bringing with her more light than my jagged heart could take, and showing my son more love than he has ever known before. I swore to protect them both at any cost but when her past and my work start to collide, I may be forced to make a difficult choice. Would I be able to keep them both safe, or would I lose the woman who has brightened the darkness within me?
WOW this book had me in its grip from start to finish. 😍 This book hit me like a train! Gwen was such a lovely person and she didn’t deserve what her ex did to her!! Gwen’s ex was too much for me.. i hate him very much😒 And how the relationship between Gwen and Ollie (Anthony’s little boy) was so great from the beginning ☺️ and Anthony wtf i loved him!! 🥰 This book really got me out of a reading slump and I couldn't wait to finish! The tension between the main characters and the anticipation of just what will happen next was so addicting!! And when him called her ”Luce mia” oh that got me ❤️❤️ At times I was ready to scream, cry and giggle endlessly while reading this! I just wanted to read more!! An absolutely wonderful story and one that will certainly be on my mind many times! 🫶🏼 Four stars from me ⭐️ I just loved this 🥰
I don't typically read single dad/nanny type books but, wow, this book had me hooked! I just loved everything about it - the characters, the trauma/comfort/healing, tension, love and spice. I loved the relationship development between Anthony and Gwen, and the sode characters were just as loveable. Nothing in this book felt forced, it all just flowed so well. I can't wait to read more by this author!
*Arc Review* This book was so great!!! The emotions this put me through. 😭🥰 It's like an episode of SVU + Dexter with a dark-ish love story mixed together perfectly! I loved the way everything came together, I could see where things were leading but there was a crazy twist that I definitely didnt see coming!! Go check out this book!! (check triggers first please!!)
I had the honor of being an ARC reader for this book and it was so great. The world in which Delaine has built so well draws you in and makes you feel like you are right there. I instantly felt like I was bonding with Gwen and what she went through. I absolutely love the bond of the characters and the way she built them and this world. I loved it SO much that I have begged for another book in the hopes that she adds books for the support characters of this book!!!
Gwendolyn (Gwen) has been a nanny for a few years. Recently her boyfriend has been cheating on her and she found out. She moved from Pittsburgh over to Chicago to get away from him and to start fresh in a new city. Gwen is now a live-in nanny for a police detective, Anthony. He has the cutest son ever, who is just a joy to be around. Gwen likes being around kids and families. She wants one of her own one day but not right now.
Anthony is a police detective and needs help raising his son - Oliver (Ollie). He has been relying on his neighbor, but she needs to raise her own daughter, and be with her family, not taking care of his son all the time. Anthony is always at the police station at all times of the day. He needs someone who can be on hand to take care of his son - in the middle of the night when he gets a phone call to come to work. Or when he has to stay at work until 11p, he needs someone to help. His son is instantly taken with Gwen, and they are both comfortable around her.
Anthony is very closed off with his feelings. When he realizes he likes Gwen he doesn't know how to act on it. He is overprotective, but that just maybe the cop in him trying to protect her.
I did receive a free ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
I was given an opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Gwen needs a fresh start and she finds it nannying a father son duo, Anthony and Oliver/Ollie. She’s doing great, getting into a routine and slowly falling for them both. But Gwen’s past becomes her present. Can Anthony help her escape her demons?! The plot thickens ladies and gents. We get spice. We get emotional scenes. We get suspense.
I love when a debut novel hits in all the right places. Or am I just biased because I love a single parent trope?! But throw in a daddy that’s an SVU detective?! Sign me up ✍🏼🙋🏻♀️ This was a such a great read, definitely a great introduction dark romance! 🖤
Finding Gwen releases June 15th and I highly recommend.
‼️PLEASE CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING‼️

I could lie to you and say I didn’t cry…but BOY OH BOY did I do some freaking crying.
I wasn’t expecting the type of crying I did, to be honest. I figured I would feel some sads, feel butterflies, and maybe even need a moment. Instead, I’m sitting here sobbing at the conclusion of this book.
What a ride this book was! The grocery list of triggers let me know I would be in for some emotions, but I didn’t expect to be impacted so deeply by what I read. The author took great care in writing post-trauma interactions between the main characters, and it really brought the story to the next level.
I’m over here yelling “WHAT A MAN!!!!” For our hunky morally-grey main character. What. A. Man. Anthony’s love for his son- outstanding Anthony’s desire to stay professional- so silly Anthony’s care and tenderness toward Gwen when she needed it? UNMATCHED AND INCREDIBLE.
The sobbing I did when Anthony was caring for Gwen. 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨 Absolutely beautiful.
Anyway. Dark romance because DANG, a lot of this story is incredibly sad. BUT the actual romance? Gorgeous. Beautiful. Love the love. Obsessed with their love.
I would rate this three habañero peppers level of spice when it comes to it, so it’s goooood.
This is such a heartbreaking, inspiring and addictive story!
I loved the comfort and healing after trauma, the way Anthony was there for Gwen unconditionally was heartwarming and healed something in me! I loved to see their relationship blossom and find the comfort and love they were both seeking in each other. Also, Ollie was such a sweet little boy and the little family the three of them formed was so cute.
🖤 Tropes 🖤 • Single dad x nanny • Kidnapping • Abusive ex • Protective mmc • Slow burn • Grumpy x sunshine • Forced proximity • He falls first • Touch her and die
Guys…like, I can’t even. This book checked all my boxes. Single dad/nanny, morally grey MMC, tension and longing with a few “good girls” sprinkled throughout. Anthony had touch her and ☠️ vibes from the very moment he met Gwen (poor Jason). Can you say Hello Elliott Stabler? Little Oliver was the cutest and I love to see the FMC fall in love with the kids just as much as the dad. The book is heavy on the domestic abuse trigger warnings so proceed with care if you have those. I’m so glad I got to experience this story and I have a feeling Delaine Walsh is going to become one of my go-to authors!
What an amazing book, I absolutely loved this book and always recommend it. If you are looking to get into dark romance and wanting to try something on the lighter side of dark romace then this book is for you. Highly recommend this book 100% Thank you Delaine for writing this amazing book. Single dad trope is now my fav lol
THIS WAS SO GOOD !!! I was sold just by the single dad/nanny of it all but then add in the slight dark romance aspect and I’m absolutely hooked this will be one I’ll reread for sure !! Once this book is released do yourself a favor and read it !!!
This book was very cute! I loved the MFC so much and I loved how real and relatable the events were! It wasn’t massively long which was amazing and it was really well paced! Overall I thought it was really great! This book is classified as a dark Romance, though I didn’t find it to be too extreme in that manner. It does have some dark themes though so check your triggers! Overall a great read!!
"What defines you are the things you do every day, despite what you've been through."
If I had to pick one quote to describe this book and two main characters, this would be it. Both Gwen and Anthony go through some very heavy things, before and after they meet each other. They find solace in the love they have for each other. Normally, that's not a trope I am a fan of. But I thoroughly enjoyed it in this book.
Due to Anthony's career, he knew how to properly be there for Gwen, and that made for a non-toxic environment for her to start healing in. That is part of what made this trope enjoyable for me for once.
This is a fairly quick read, and I do recommend it. It does touch on some very heavy topics, so please be mindful of the triggers if you have any.
I gave this a 2.5-3 because I was a little unsure about this book. So, Gwyn is a Nanny and a DV victim to an absolute douchebag and Anthony is a single dad detective who loves to beat the shit out of other abusing douchebags in his spare time because he has an anger problem he can’t control. Ivy is Gwyn’s best friend who imo is a world class bestie for the things she does for Gwyn. Firstly, both Gwyn and Anthony fall so deeply in love very quickly when they’ve hardly been around each other. He’s working all the time and when he is home Gwyn leaves him to do the dad things with his son. So for them to fall so quickly confused me and I felt like I missed some of the book.
I didn’t like that his first spicy interaction was rough and possessive. He deals with DV victims all the time and knowing what Gwyn had been through it didn’t sit well with me on how he was with her. Anthony was very much ‘I’ll kill for her’ vibe but was a bit too possessive with it. He freaked out when she went to the bathroom and Gwyn would ask him if she could go for a shower. Controlling much!!! He also tracked her phone without her permission which in the end did save her from a frightening situation but still…not cool! So yeh, I’m not sure but wouldn’t really recommend.
I absolutely DEVOURED this book in the span of 2 hours! The chemistry between Gwen and Anthony is INSANE. I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy of Finding Gwen and I HIGHLY recommend everyone reads it! I cannot wait to see what Delaine comes up with next! ⭐️ as always, check trigger warnings! ⭐️
This is a must read if you love strong male characters, females finding their strength and a very HEA!
I could not put this one down - I loved hearing about the back and forth between Gwen and Anthony (not trying to give any spoilers!)
Anthony definitely has a dominate side which was SPICY - would love to see more of this in the future? And another spinoff could include Anthony’s partner! So much fun to think about where these characters will go in the future!
Thanks for the ARC team selection - bookmark this for the release on June 4!

This book is stunning. What a fantastic debut novel. I devoured this in just a couple hours, it was unputdownable. I don’t normally do hetero romance novels bc they’re just not relatable to me, but Delaine gave me an opportunity to snag an ARC and I am so glad I did. This was one of the most beautiful romance novels I’ve ever read. The book had a few spicy scenes, very hot 🥵 but surprisingly, I was in this one for the storyline. You just cannot help but fall in love with Ollie, either. Ugh. So cute. I’d love to see this made into a movie, I love the premise. Beautiful debut novel, Delaine. Wow.
Am I obsessed with single-dad dark romances now?? I think I am! Finding Gwen was the perfect combination of SVU, dark romance, tortured main characters, and sloowww burn. 🔥 It’s advertised as having Dexter vibes and that’s spot on! Gwen’s journey was such a great one to witness and really got me in my feelings. 😅
Small details that I loved: 🖤 Antonio’s relationship with his work partner is the vibe 🖤 Adorable toddler-wingman antics 🖤 Explosive, SPICY conclusion to the slow-burn wind-up 🖤 Italian nicknames 😈 🖤 Well-done mental health/trauma representation 🖤 the best girl pals 😍 🖤 Gwen falling for his son first 😭 I love the way she loves Ollie. 🖤 Villains that make you want to punch them in the throats (and getting what they deserve)
In depth review: I really enjoyed this one! There are some on-page parts that you may want to check your trigger warnings for, but the violence and after effects were so respectfully written and really well-done. It felt like a real-life depiction of what healing from DV/SA trauma looks like. The pacing was great. I didn’t feel like the story lagged at all. I adore Gwen! She’s so likeable, even in the deeeeeppp dark moments. I just wanted to hug her the entire book. 🥺 Antonio is broody, mysterious and the epitome of touch her and ☠️ vibes. I highly recommend this book if you like true crime vibes, spice, and cute banter.
ARC REVIEW Thank you to the author and Bookfunnel for this opportunity
Finding Gwen is a quick, spicy, dark romance read. It hits a lot of the popular tropes and leaves you with a smile at the end.
Recommended for fans of dad/nanny trope, Dexter-esque MMC, and romantic thrillers.
Quick About: Gwen is a woman who has had enough when she catches her fiancé cheating and he takes his anger out on her. With the help of her bestfriend, she moves to another state to start over. With the right connections, she luckily lands a live-in nanny job for a single dad of a two year old. As if tensions with the impossibly good-looking dad that runs hot and cold in her presence isn't enough, Gwen's ex finds her. Bringing more danger with him.
Anthony is a SVU detective with a dark, dark inner calling. The only light that barely keeps him grounded is his adorable two year old son, Ollie. That is until he hires a nanny that is more than perfect for the job of not only raising his son, but guiding him out of his darkness. When both of their pasts show up to ruin the hard earned life Anthony has been working towards, he does the only thing he can think of. He lets the dark side take over.
My thoughts: The whole book is fast paced. The very first chapter we meet Gwen and are launched into her uprooting to a new state in order to get away from her ex. I actually like that a lot. Not a fan of big backstories. Gwen is likeable enough, but I really enjoyed her best friend. Ivy. MVP. She's the GOAT. Whisked her bestfriend away, got her in touch with a nanny agency, and just general good person. Okay, enough of that. So, as much as I liked the fast paced opening, I was really hoping for a little more every day interactions between Gwen and Anthony. There's a bit of time skipping around where we are told they have minimal conversations, Anthony mostly trying to avoid his growing attraction to Gwen. I needed a bit of that slow burn showing, rather than telling. However, still enjoyed it enough to overlook that. I really appreciated the author making both characters aware of professionalism and doing their best to uphold it. As well as, thinking about the MMC's son and what crossing a professional line could do to the toddler. BTW! This author clearly knows how to write young kids. The dialogue for a toddler can be tricky for some, but Delanie Walsh nailed it. Props!
Spicy rating: 2 Darkness: 4
PLEASE read the CW. This book deals with very dark themes.
My favorite (non-spoiler) lines:
Something about the hot water paired with a good playlist could make even the worst days better.
His kisses became desperate, as if he was running out of air and I had the last of the oxygen.
I absolutely devoured this book. It had me hooked from the moment I picked it up all the way to the end. The way that Delaine Walsh writes her book is completely captivating and truly pulls you into the world of her characters.
I loved all of the characters in this story. My heart fully goes to Anthony though. He was the detective/dexter-esque man of my dreams. I also did not realize how badly I needed to read a MMC in this profession (iykyk). It truly made me feel seen as a girlfriend and was so relatable.
Seeing Gwen interact with Ollie was the most heartwarming part of the story for me and again made me so excited to be a Mom one day. (They’re too expensive! I don’t need one right now, I swear!) She truly loved that kid with her whole heart, and it was such a beautiful thing to see her give him the love he so much deserved.
I also always always love to see a father put his kid first and always think about them before they choose to invite a romantic partner into their lives. I have so much love for the parent depiction in these pages but also choosing to take care of yourself and think about your own needs at the same time. 10/10.
I also really enjoyed seeing Anthony help Gwen through her panic attacks. As someone with Panic Disorder myself, this representation was really appreciated. My boyfriend is also one of the only people who can calm me down when I get like that, so it made me tear up and appreciate him even more, when I saw Anthony do the same for Gwen. Being able to have someone there to calm you down during those moments and make you feel safe seriously means the world, and I mean how can you not fall head over heels for someone so understanding and supportive?
I also LOVED the little Dexter references in the book — going as far as to have Ivy and Gwen’s favorite binge show be Dexter. That show is literally one of me and my boyfriend’s favorites and we just finished a rewatch of it, so I was living for that and laughing so hard at the little easter egg moment. We love our morally gray men!
I could go on for hours about this book genuinely, but I will just end this review by saying that you HAVE to read this book! This is Delaine Walsh’s debut novel, and I have to say that I am so incredibly excited to read anything and everything else that she writes. It truly was such a strong debut and I loved every moment that I spent reading it! I rate this book 5/5 stars! 🌟
Favorite Tropes of this Book: 🧍🏻♂️Single Dad x Nanny 🦋 “Breathe with me.” 😏 “Good girl.” 🥰 He Falls First
Tropes: 😱Dark Romance Thriller ❤️🔥Slow Burn 🫦Single Dad (Detective) x Nanny 🩶Morally Grey 🔪Touch Her and D1e Review: What a debut! This had me reading into the wee hours of the morning because I couldn't put it down!
We have a sublimely complex, devastatingly handsome MMC in Anthony, a detective with "dark urges" that he fulfills in after hours. With a horrific past, he's coped by feeding a darkness that claws within him at times, and which has caused him to shut his heart to letting in any love.
This plan begins to crumble as warm hearted live-in nanny Gwen instantly bonds with Anthony's 2 year old son and gradually melts his somewhat icy demeanor. But Gwen has just come out of a violent relationship so she's a bit cautious of this handsome, serious-work minded, yet doting father.
As they begin to enjoy the routine of their little formed family, not without the sizzling angst, one of his cases and her dark past comes to ahead, erupting in danger and turmoil.
I lapped up the nuances of their budding relationship. It's appropriately complex and beautifully heartbreaking at times. There's some intense scenes of assault and the aftermath with both of them was handheld with great tenderness and raw truth.
Anthony has me hot and bothered in the best way! I loved this man, his darkness scratching to get release I would've enjoyed seeing even a little more of but, man, did I devour his vulnerability, his pain, his passion, his love for his son/Gwen, his chivalry and his code to punish the guilty.
And we get such a journey for Gwen! She goes through devastation but picks up the pieces, finds herself, doesn't give up on fighting for this man who sometimes infuriates her but ultimately will burn the world for those he loves.
I absolutely was engulfed by this story and characters...it's got the angst, the dark hidden past, a thrilling detective case, smoldering slow burn (which bursts into delicious flames later 🥵) and beautiful flawed humans triumphing over evil, culminating in a gripping final act that I was white knuckle over! Can't say enough other than pick this up now!
Finding Gwen is a dark romance written by Delaine Walsh. It is her debut book, and I couldn’t be more excited about her and this journey!
The book is a dual POV between Gwen and Anthony. Anthony is a single dad and a detective with the Special Victims Unit. Having to raise his son on his own after his ex-wife chose booze and drugs over them has become increasingly difficult. His job is demanding, and he often has to leave at all hours of the day, leaving his neighbor and new mom herself to watch his son. He has concluded that he needs help and a live-in nanny would be perfect, BUT he is picky. He knows what kind of scum is out there, and he wouldn’t trust his son with just anyone. Gwen is a nanny by trade and loves taking care of children. When she arrives home early to find her fiance cheating on her, she decides it's time to move on not only from the relationship to a new state and a new life. Sadly, her fiance won’t let her go that easily, and things become physical, but it isn’t the first time.
I am a sucker for a daddy/nanny relationship. I always have been. Whew, and this one delivers. To add fuel to that already smokin-hot trope, the dad is a morally grey hero who seeks out men who abuse women and um, teaches them a lesson. Anthony is protective and passionate about his family. Their safety is paramount, and now that includes Ms. Gwen. The instant chemistry between Anthony and Gwen is palpable, but there is a slow burn with teases along the way. There is a lovely amount of spice that I enjoyed immensely!
There are triggers that you need to be aware of if you are sensitive to SA and domestic abuse. So please tread carefully. We do go on a type of journey with Gwen as she experiences this trauma and begins to heal with the help of her wonderful friends, Anthony and Pete.
Thank you to Delaine Walsh for gifting me an eARC of Finding Gwen. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
More like 3.5 stars but definitely better than 3 stars so it gets bumped up to four.
My favorite part of this book was all the relationships. Anthony’s friendship with Jason, Gwen’s with Ivy, Gwen with Oliver, Anthony with Oliver, Gwen and Anthony. They were all fleshed out and multifaceted and at no point did the author forget those relationships.
Did Ivy have a huge role to play in the beginning of the book but less so later? Yes. But I still heard about Ivy throughout the book despite her no longer being physically there. There were still phone calls and conversations and visits. Even Carolyn was remembered even though her purpose was mostly to get Gwen a job. I never at any point felt like characters were plot devices even if they were minor characters.
Also this was a SLOW burn. Which… usually I love but IDK, their non-physical chemistry just wasn’t there for me. The sexual tension existed but wasn’t prominent. So I wasn’t totally invested because the storyline was more prevalent than Anthony and Gwen’s story.
But when they did finally get together? 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 It was steamy and hot and sexy and I loved it.
I really liked Anthony and that he had a dark side but… it almost felt incongruent with the story? Jason I believed. Jason I could see that being a part of him and his story. Anthony it kind of felt like an after thought. And I kinda feel like Gwen was too blasé about the whole thing but then again… after what she went through? Maybe not. Anthony proved over and over that she could trust him so I guess it makes sense that his secret would be included.
Overall I really liked it. I thought their story was intense and believable and exciting. And I kinda really hope we get a Jason/Ivy book. 😏😏😏
Single dad AND morally grey with serious Dexter vibes… sign me up!
I absolutely devoured this book! It had me literally hooked from the start. Gwen’s journey was so heartbreaking to read, but oh so satisfying in the end! The chemistry between her and Anthony can only be described as intense. Anthony is the German Shepherd, morally grey Daddy of your dreams! I love how protective and caring he was towards Gwen. It is so utterly beautiful to watch Gwen find the happiness she has always deserved; she is incredibly strong and brave for what she has overcame.
The instant connect between Oliver and Gwen was so stinking adorable! Gwen is fiercely loyal and protective of him. That is one of the reasons I love the single dad/nanny trope, and this ticked all of those boxes! It was a bit of slow burn, but once things get going they really heat up! The tension is palpable, and the way it all comes together in the end is *chef’s kiss*.
If you’re looking for the an incredible single/dad x nanny romance, toss in an adorable kiddo, lots of emotional growth, and morally grey MMC that does what we all wish could be done to those who hurt others, then this is the book for you! Huge kudos to Delaine Walsh on her debut book! It is amazing and I can’t wait to see what you create next. I loved the storyline, it was perfectly spicy with plots and the characters you create you just can’t help but fall in love with! Thank you so so much for the ARC! It was an absolute pleasure to read this book!
First thank you so much Delaine Walsh for letting me read Finding Gwen early! 🖤 Personally this book just wasn’t for me, but I hope it’s for you. I had a few issues with timing, the beginning was great. I like it, but somewhere in the beginning of the middle I got lost. I don’t know where their connection started, one minute she started her new job the next she’s talking to her best friend and the eyes he was making at her but I don’t remember really reading that and then they had this amazing connection over eyeing each other. So I was a bit lost there. The continued SA was kinda annoying and frustrating and I just felt terrible for Gwen, I wish when they finally had s3x that he let her take the role since it was right after the first attack. I felt the MMC a bit frustrating and confusing I never knew where he stood till the last 10%. I absolutely loved Ivy and I wanted more of her.
I gave this book 3⭐️’s cause I loved the storyline, it had lots of potential I just got lost during the way.
It guts me writing not positive reviews. I absolutely hate it cause I know how hard authors work on their books. My only hope with my negative review’s is they help in the future and the author never take it to heart and they keep on going🖤 🫶🏻
Finding Gwen is about Gwen, a woman who just got out of an abusive relationship looking for a fresh start in a new city. She interviews to be a nanny for Oliver, son of Anthony. Anthony is an SVU detective who has some demons of his own. While they try to deny their attraction for one another, Anthony quickly discovers he will keep Gwen safe at all costs. Gwen, who instantly falls in love with 2 year old Ollie, finds herself questioning if she can find it within herself to trust another man - let alone her new boss.
Delanie did a wonderful job of really getting the reader to connect with the characters. I loved the main characters and the side characters, which made it easy to devour this book in one sitting. This is a fast paced, dual POV, that really pulls at your emotions. The chemistry between Gwen and Anthony was amazing, and Anthony totally gave me Eliot Stabler vibes 😮💨(IYKYK) I liked that we got to see how Gwen and Anthony help the other deal with their inner demons. The slow burn and tension was exactly what I want in a book. I do feel like the ending twists were a bit predictable, but it didn’t stop me from eating it up.
I’m praying for a storyline between Ivy and Jason! I will definitely be checking out more of Delaine’s books!
Overall, Finding Gwen was a really good book! This was my first single dad/nanny trope and I have to say I really enjoyed it! For this being tagged as a “dark romance” I was expecting darker aspects in the *spice* category, but it’s definitely dark in the plot rather than the spice. Anyone wanting to read this that might be triggered easily definitely will want to look into the content warnings. Thank you to Delanie Walsh for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC for my honest review!
