“What do you mean, ‘You gave me the wrong sperm sample’?!” But the doctor says he isn’t joking. Instead of being my sister's surrogate... I'm accidentally carrying my boss's baby.
A few months ago, I agreed to be my sister's surrogate. Then she died in an unsolved accident. I swore I'd keep her child and raise it on my own.
But as it turns out, there was a mix-up at the clinic. Instead of carrying my future nephew... I learned I'm pregnant with my boss’s child.
But Dmitri isn't just my boss. He's also the one who killed my sister in the first place.
TANGLED INNOCENCE is Book 1 of the Egorov Bratva duet. Dmitri and Wren’s story concludes in Book 2, TANGLED DECADENCE.
Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
Ok I have been reading Nicole Fox for quite some time now and she has never failed to disappoint and this book was no exception.✨
Firstly I loved the concept of this book, it’s a different avenue Nicole has explored. Instead of the two MCs sleeping with each other and the FMC ends up pregnant, we see that the FMC Wren ends up with the wrong sperm donor in the IVF clinic. And that sperm donor turns out to be none other than her boss Dmitri.
A little background to this is Wren agreed to carry her sisters baby because her sister and her husband were struggling to conceive. But they were killed in an accident prior to this but Wren still goes ahead with having the baby because she wanted to have one last piece of them. And this is where the mix up happens in terms of the donor samples.
Dmitri also uses the IVF clinic as he and his fiancée Bea want to have a child to get her father off her back. Now you might wonder why they don’t want to conceive the normal way and the reason for that is Dmitri isn’t actually Bea’s type and what I mean by that is Bea swings for the other team💅
Dmitri and Bea have been friends for years and he decides to propose to Bea in order to keep her safe from her father’s backwards believes. Honestly I absolutely loved this about Dmitri! And Bea she is one of my favourite side characters.
Now Wren is completely oblivious to their agreement for majority of this book until one night she finds Bea with a woman. But prior to this she cannot figure out why Bea is so accepting of Wren and basically tries to push her in Dmitri’s direction. Honestly Bea is just iconic 🤪
This book is definitely more on the slow burn but the tension and chemistry of this couple is 😮💨.
This book is a rollercoaster from start to finish, I mean I need book two now 😅 I am leaving this review spoiler free but you need to pick it up, like now!

“Tangled Innocence” is the story of Wren and Dmitri.
The heroine gets mistakenly impregnated with the hero’s baby- who is her boss- who is engaged to a hot lady- who has different tastes- and this ordeal was originally supposed to be for her late sister and her husband.. confused? Well it gets.. worse. We have an engaged hero to OW, the heroine having to live with both of them, there’s a part of the book where the hero insists on abortion and is very mean, then suddenly he’s the mafia and obsessed with her.. I really didn’t enjoy it.
Wow, he really gets away with butchering her sister like that after we spent the whole book allowing him to be an absolute asshole to Wren?
Seriously?
When is Wren's pain enough?
When does he surrender control?
When does Bee admit he's a cunt?
What an enabled fuckwit who deserved every single inch of grief he got.
I wish more on him but he now gets a son to abuse.
You know, IF Wren and Bee survive.
I really tried to care but as soon as Bee started saying it was fine for her friend to shoot innocents, as long as he felt bad about it, then its ok for her to die, as long as the person didn't want to kill her.
Literally how can you set up the standard and then have me care?
Welll this was really bad , i have to stop reading so many times . MMC was total asshole. He hid so many things from her and degraded her for what she didn’t even do. Also he killed her sister and didn’t bother to ask for forgiveness 😠😠
I'm on the fence with this book. The beginning was fine and we got a lot of information but I didn't really understand how she was a surrogate for her sister and brother-in-law if they were just planning on artifical insemination. Technically if her sister couldn't carry to term I would think they'd implant an embryo instead of insemination.... but I digress. Oh, and usually you can't find out the gender by ultrasound as early as she was so it's just details like that that throw me off. Also a few typos but not too bad. I liked the premise of the book and the FMC's personality (mostly) which is why I gave it 3 stars but I feel for a 500+ page book there could've been a few things different.
Spoilers ahead...
Anyways, I liked Bee I thought she was a pretty refreshing character. And Aleks too had a good sense of humor. It wasn't an overly spicy book, the MMC and FMC didn't do anything until almost 70% of the way in and had a few scenes after that. I liked that the FMC stood up for herself until she didn't. She slept with him the day after he called her a human incubator and other not nice things because he opened up to her. I thought it was too soon for that considering it wasn't the first time he was a jerk to her. The MMC was hot and cold to her and I didn't really feel the connection. And obviously the big reveal was something that I can't see 90% of people forgiving. She talks about how much she loved her sister and finds out he targeted and murdered her for revenge. Then she starts to doubt her sister due to possible lies and stuff to justify her being murdered? Yeah he regrets it NOW but if he never met her he obviously wouldn't care and you can't live in the past blah blah blah. There are to be more secrets to be revealed in the second book but I might waiting a few days. And not to mention the blurb for the second book says she (the FMC) was "stolen on my wedding day" which is incorrect because it was Bee and the MMC's wedding day.
I would not even venture to call this novel romance, it is basically just a fiction / drama about the Egorov Bratva with minimal romance! There are no romance scenes until page 391/575 or 68% completion. That is an insanely long time for a supposed romance novel! Also not a super steamy scene, only 3-4 pages and minimal spice. This continues throughout the book as there are only about 2-3 romance scenes. Dimitri Egorov is a MAJOR asshole. Like, worse than any romance novel I’ve ever read. The emotional abuse he inflicts on Wren in the name of “keeping his son safe” is the stuff of nightmares, gaslighting and long term emotional trauma. Not even a sexy scene can fix this mess. I almost gave up reading at 60% completion because I couldn’t take it! The only good thing about the book is Bee, Dimitri’s fiancé, daughter to an Italian monster. She is funny, witty and gives Dmitiri all the sass and back talk he deserves. While I loved her spunky, rebellious personality, I couldn’t help feel horrible for her situation. She and Dmitiri are merely a front for one another, using their marriage to unite two gangs, cover for Bee’s homosexuality her father would kill her for (speaking of that, what a lovely character! Did I mention he hates anyone who isn’t a white, Italian, catholic male? Aren’t the men in this book splendid!) and produce an heir for the Egorov Bratva without the physical relationship normally required. Bee is also gaining protection from her father, which she desperately needs considering he beat her with a whip as “conversion therapy” until her arrangement with Dimitri appeared. It is an awful situation to be in, your entire life on the outside a lie. Her willingness to accept Wren and make her as comfortable as possible speaks to her selflessness and kindness. Lots of violence and fighting between the Irish mafia and the Egorov Bratva. This is the central theme of the book, dmitri and bee are marrying to unite the Italian mob and Bratva to take down the Irish mafia. Drama between these groups and bee and dmitri’s fake relationship are the core plot lines in the book, the romance and tension between wren and dmitri seem like a subplot. I wasn’t a huge fan!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Emotionally damaged men… Strong women … also often damaged Mafia/Bratva battles and secrets Jealous possessive men even though they don’t need or want the FMC…
Wren works for Dmitri Egorov. This is the first book of the Egorove Bratva duet. The fertility clinic and she wants to keep her promise to her deceased sister to carry her nephew for her and raise him as her own. The fertility clinic makes a huge mistake and she's carrying her boss's baby. She thinks he's a jerk and can tell her what to do. Dmitri ends up realizing that Wren is no pushover and isn't going to be his captive. Now Wren's life is quite different because her boss is the leader of the Russian Bratva. Lots of twists and turns, secrets, miscommunications that ends in a cliffhanger.
If you are looking for an angsty, romantic mafia book, this is it. Dmitri will give you whiplash, but you'll eventually understand why he is the way he is. I absolutely loved the banter throughout the story (especially with Bee). I stayed up too late several nights because I couldn't stop reading. Excited to see what happens in the next book.

When Wren agreed to be a surrogate finger sister she was hoping to give her the HEA shed always dreamed of. What she never imagined was her sister and brother-in-law dying and her finding out the baby she is carrying a as conceived with the wrong sperm. She's Carrying the baby of a man she hates, her boss and head of the local Bratva, Dimitri. Local gangs make an attempt in her life because she is carrying his hair and so he practically kidnaps her so she is forced to live in his penthouse with his fiance to keep his hair safe. But not is all as it seems there either. Bee, is in fact a fake fiance and Dimitris childhood friend. Their engagement intake to hide her homosexuality after being punished by her father, the head of a local mafia all her life. The trio make a plan but all plans crumble when secrets come out, hearts break and guns are drawn. A cliff hanger ending awaits before book 2 with someone missing and another on the brink of death.
3.5⭐️ Even tho it looks like there’s so many pages to read, it went really fast and I did enjoy the story of Wren and Dmitri. (And it took me out of book slump)
Definitely not a usual way for main characters to cross paths and so many secrets hidden from Wren from both sides - Dmitri and her close ones. The second half was a little slow, not really spicy but in general good book.
Quickie Duet Review: I have always enjoyed diving into one of Fox’s duets when in between reads. And this one was truly fantastic. My only hang up was a grammar error at a pivotal moment that happens at a pivotal time. It ruined the scene for me. But all in all, the rest of story was still wonderful and it ended up redeeming itself. I loved the relationship between both Dmitri and Wren. Especially with how they came together in the first place. A unique situation. The duet kept my attention from start to finish and I look forward to more from this amazing author. 5 Stars.

This is book one in the Egorov Bratva duet so be prepared for one heck of a cliffhanger ending. Wren just wanted to keep her promise to her dead sister and now she's carrying a very dangerous man's baby. Not only that, he happens to be her jerk of a boss and he believes that since she's carrying his baby he gets to tell her what to do. Little does Dmitri realize Wren is no pushover and she won't be the happy little captive he expects her to be. Dmitri is also not telling Wren everything and those secrets will come back to haunt him!
I rated this 3.5 stars purely for the plot—it definitely had something going for it. But the book was so long (over 500 pages!) for a mafia romance felt like a stretch—it dragged at times and didn’t need to be that long, and yet there’s still a second book?? Like… why? 😅 Some chapters in the beginning were lowkey cringe, but I kept going out of curiosity. Not sure I loved it, but I might still check out the sequel just to see what happens next.
Let me start by saying that I am all for mafia themed books, not matter how morality grey or dark the MMC is. On the other hand, there also has to be a smart, fierce and self respecting FMC. I get that Wren, the FMC had a difficult childhood and did not have the best experiences in her love life, but when push come to shove, she just stayed and took it. She was placed in a difficult situation, and yet I still believed that at some point, she would “wake up” and truly fight for herself, her baby and her dignity. Unfortunately, apart from some tantrums, she just took it lying down. I have read my fair share of unredeemable MMC and still got on board, because the FMC gave as good as she got or tried to fight back in one way or another. I cannot get on board when the FMC has absolutely no self-respect for herself. The only reason I gave this book 2.5 starts is due to the writing itself, which was easy to follow.
Tangled Innocence by Nicole Fox is Book 1 of Egorov Bratva Duet. This starts the story of Dmitri and Wren. Wren has agreed to carry her sister and brother in law's baby. But there was a mix up in the lab and now she is carrying Dmitri baby. This book does end with a cliffhanger setting us up for more in their story.
I loved the snark and the side characters but I just couldn’t get on board with the MMC. He had no redeeming qualities and there was no chemistry with the FMC
Absolutely loved it! I did think it would be a little spicier but I still really enjoyed how much of an easy read it was. I immediately started ready Book #2 because I needed to know what happened!
Nicole Fox does it again. Very good story. It has many twists, and it keeps you on your toes. It's not a boring moment. I love Bees and Wrens charcter. Highly recommended.
