Bloodied and broken, I clawed my way out of hell at twelve years old. Left a corpse behind and took with me only trauma. I’m twenty-three now, and it’s no surprise I’m haunting the streets on the wrong side of the river, stealing to survive and provide for the one person who has ever cared for me. Only, my seamless thefts have started drawing the wrong kind of attention. Threatened into the dangerous task of breaking into Sinro Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar private military company, I soon find myself at the mercy of their ruthless, beautiful CEO. Cain Vincent. To say I’m attracted to the man is an understatement. He is the definition of lethal. And when he discloses the truth about the hard drive I was supposed to steal, I’m desperate for him to take me under wing. I want him. I want to be strong like him. I want to put an end to the criminals that threatened me and spread so much evil throughout this city. But diving into mercenary work tends to summon demons. And unfortunately, my demons won’t be laid to rest with just bullets.
CAIN
He makes me lose all control. Ex-Special Forces and current CEO of Sinro Enterprises, I sacrifice my personal life and health to lead mercenary teams dedicated to wiping out high-profile criminals. My working hours are endless. My schedule is rigid. I leave no room for normal things like relationships. Until a pretty little thief breaks into my high-rise and shatters what I’d come to believe was peace. I find myself hesitating to pull the trigger for the first time. Ezra honestly thinks he can win me over. Manipulate my emotions. And yeah, I’ll admit I’ve never been so captivated by another person. But I’ve been burned before. I won’t tolerate betrayal. If this kid so much as blinks those long eyelashes wrong, I won’t hesitate to kill him.
This author is lucky I don’t rate things unless I get to at least 50% because this sucked!
The blurb for this made me think it was going to be dark and smutty but this author clearly didn’t know what she wanted this book to be. We have Cain, head of this mercenary and security company, so you’d think he’d be big and bad but he acted like a 12 year old boy unable to control his boner. His love interest, the young thief, Ezra, breaks into his company trying to steal a hard drive for a mob boss and instead of taking him out, Cain locks him in his office and gets a boner looking at him. Okkkkk. Some security company. 🙄🙄🙄 Then Ezra is able to find enough paper clips in a drawer to make a lock pick but when he gets out he doesn’t escape the building but stays on the same floor and organizes everyone’s desk. Huh? And he ate someone’s sandwich. 🤷🏻♀️ I mean yah he didn’t really have anywhere to go but it was just weird?
Being in Cain’s pov was torture. I legit felt like I was reading a Cora Rose book because he was trying to convince himself that he wasn’t into Ezra by saying things like “His admission brings another pain like heartburn to my chest” and “Are these feelings due to a hemorrhage in my brain, a concussion or just whiplash?” Eye fucking roll 🙄🙄 I was waiting for him to grab his chest and think he was having a heart attack due to the bacon he ate for breakfast but that might be plagiarism since it’s in all of Cora’s books 😂😂😂
Being in Ezra’s pov wasn’t much better though. His back story was kind of interesting but he was such a brat and I like brats but this was not it. Maybe if Cain had actually been the dark mercenary he was supposed to be but these two had absolutely no chemistry between them despite Cain’s boners and Ezra’s unsuccessful attempt to suck on Cain’s lip.
Also, why was everyone named something biblical? We have Cain, Ezra, Isaac, Rebecca, Gabriel etc and because Ezra and Cain’s names are both 4 letters and too similar I kept getting them mixed up. I should not have been able to mix up a brat and a mercenary bad ass but here we are. Oh did I mention there’s a dead ex??? 💀
The idea of having to read even a minute more of this book makes me feel like I’m going to break out into hives. First time trying this author and I think she needs to figure out her path before I try again.
Liam DiCosimo and Corvin King are my two favorite narrators, and them doing this audiobook was absolutely straight fire. Definitely gonna be a repeat read.
I absolutely ate this book up. It had all the tropes I love: hurt/comfort, grumpy/sunshine, age gap, enemies-to-lovers, “touch him and die”. The prologue gripped me and pulled me right in, and made me fall for poor baby Ezra.
I adored both Ezra and Cain. Two boys broken in totally different ways and finding healing in each other. The push and pull and tension in the beginning was hot, but then the sweetness that came from Cain falling for Ezra. Love when a jaded man becomes soft for only one person. Plus all the “baby”s and “beautiful boy”s ruined me.
This is a dark book with a lot of triggering themes. But the relationship between the MMC’s was relatively angst-free which balanced that darkness well. And the plot kept me on my toes the whole time. I think my heart actually stopped when Mason showed up. So many twists and turns!
BUT THE SIDE CHARACTERS. Jakey. Rev. Salem. Cain’s brothers. They added so much to this story. Please let there be a book about Rev eventually. Love me a psychopath romance. And he was such a good friend to Ezra.
Do I recommend this book? YES. YES YES YES. And in Spanish: Sí.
P.S. The proposal? Might be the cutest ever.
P.P.S. Thanks again to Sharee for gifting me this audiobook! It was even better than I could’ve hoped.
Ezra, a homeless thief with a traumatic childhood, is doing any and everything he can just to survive. Because of this he's tasked to break into Sinro Enterprises, a private military company (coughMERCScough), and gets caught in the act by the CEO.
Cain isn't sure what to do with Ezra, or the attraction he feels for the beautiful little thief, so he decides to keep him. The pair work well together, and chemistry sparks between them as they take down the criminals infiltrating the city.
Overall, I really loved Ezra and Cain and thought they were both really well written characters. They both have been through it, suffering traumas that they're working on getting through, even if their coping mechanisms aren't always the healthiest, and I just really enjoyed their dynamic.
This was my first read by Abigail, but definitely not my last!
✨ARC REVIEW✨ The soft sassy thief with a huge deal of trauma and the grumpy merc CEO with daddy tendencies. Action, found family, amazing hurt/comfort, and satisfying revenge. Who couldask for more? There's a bit of insta-lust but I didn't mind at all. There are also unhealthy coping mechanisms, but yeah, trauma is a b!tch. The smut was smutting and the love story is perfect.
Tropes: age gap, mercenary/thief, hurt/comfort Feels: 4/5 Steam*: 3/5 Kinks: toys, bit of exhibitionism, roadhead Angst: medium HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: child trafficking, past CSA of MC, lots of minor character victims, murder, gore, panic attacks, self-harm, horrible humans including priests/nuns, homelessness, poverty, dead ex
Ezra is 23. He is a past victim of trafficking and CSA. He managed to escape and has been living homeless since, an old addict saved him on the streets and has been basically a father figure since - Jakey. He steals very well. He's caught the attention of a crimelord who wants to use his stealthy services to steal back a hard drive. He's threatened Jakey if he doesn't succeed.
Cain is 35. He's a former military man working as a mercenary, he owns his own company. He's in possession of the hard drive. He meets Ezra when Ezra attempts to steal the hard drive. Ezra fails to steal it, and is taken in for questioning, and ends up under his protection. Cain treats Ezra different from the very first moment they meet then he would any other suspect. He would have shot first with anyone else but he's whipped, left heart and mind stuttering over Ezra. He pulls Ezra closer and closer as he learns more about his past and trusts Ezra more and wants to protect him more.
They work together to take down the crimelord and take down the trafficking ring he's part of.
This was a good book. Cain and Ezra were both complex characters and you really felt for the both of them. There was a lot going on with the plot, a lot of suspense. The chemistry and emotion between Cain and Ezra was intense. Ezra was very traumatized and triggered at times and had panic attacks. It was tough to read but he was so supported and cared for. I really liked Ezra as a character. He was vulnerable but a fighter, he was smart and wiley, he had good survival instincts, he was bratty and cocky at times, he was hyperactive, he had a good heart. I loved how protective Cain was, I loved the clothes sharing, the bed sharing, how Cain always found Ezra when he was breaking down and just held him, the "you are my home" dynamic.
Some notable moments:
Cute, Cain's first reaction to seeing Ezra "My eyes scan over the heads of people typing away, coming to rest on a pretty face that tilts my world on its axis for a few slow breaths. He tips his head up at me in curiosity, and it’s like a higher being sank a fishing hook in my cheek, lurching me to a halt to have me questioning my entire purpose. I think the answers to the universe might be hidden in the beautiful depths of his hazel eyes."
"“Oh my god. Who came up with this? They deserve… shit, they deserve a medal.” I moan as he thrusts his tongue in and out. “If we would all just… Jesus, if everyone ate ass, we’d have world peace.”"
"Rev pinches my cheek. “Cain tried convincing me that you’re too much of a brat to fit in on my team, but you take orders exceptionally well.” “I act up for Cain in hopes that it will result in sexual punishment.” Rev tips his head back and lets out a hearty laugh, striding away to collect his own gear."
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Y’all This Book Was Really Enjoyable, Ezra And Cain Were Really Good For Each Other And This Book DEFINITELY Gives “ I Would Burn The World For You “ Vibes. The Spice Was DEFINITELY Spicing And The Plot Was DEFINITELY Plotting. DEFINITELY Recommend This If You Want A Really Good MM Mafia Romance And I HIGHLY Recommend The Audiobook Because The Audiobook Was Actually Amazing.🫶💕
Cain and his beautiful broken boy Ezra. These two are perfect for each other and I loved their story.
....
"How did I go from wanting to throw him out a window to wanting to provide for him in the span of a day?"
"Beautiful boy, I'm going to take you home and devour you."
"Listen to me. You are worthy of every ounce of love others want to give you. Do you understand? You deserve love. So let me give it to you until you're healed enough to believe it, too, okay?"
"Everything is for you beautiful boy. My heart included."

DNF at 30% - I tried twice to get into this book and I just couldn’t. I even tried the audio. It’s just not holding my attention. I think it’s partially the writing style—the author’s brand of ADD is clashing with my ADD. 😂 I’m also not into the extreme insta-lust. They just met and are supposed to be enemies but all they’re thinking about is banging. There’s no angst or build.
“Ignite" was an excellent read! I love a good mercenary morally grey story. The relationship between Ezra and Cain was compelling and featured good character development. If you enjoy possessive morally grey vigilante heroes, then this book is for you.
Ezra, the sweet, innocent Ezra, who had such a horrible and traumatic childhood, is a 23-year-old homeless thief just doing his best to get by. He only cares about one elderly man named Jakey, whom he wants to protect with his life. On the other hand, we have Cain, the CEO of Sinro Enterprises. This is a grumpy hero who is only sweet to their sunshine partner. The way Ezra and Cain meet is not your typical meet-cute. Ezra is in charge of stealing an important hard drive from Sinro Enterprises. After breaking and entering the company, Ezra, however, gets caught in the action by Cain. Cain, for the first time ever, feels something; he is both mesmerized and confused by Ezra. However, the more they stay in each other's presence and solve problems, the more they realize their explosive chemistry and their love for each other.
If you are into tropes such as, then this book is for you: 1.Grumpy x sunshine 2.Found zanily 3.Age gap 4.Morally grey alpha hero 5.Possessive 6.Billionaire 7.Touch him and die
Please check trigger warnings. Available on April 4th. I received an ARC for this book, and this is my honest review.
I don’t think anyone will understand how much I wanted to love this. This came out on the 4th of April and I deliberately saved this for the 8th of April. My birthday, because I was sure I’d love it and enjoy the life out of it. What a let down it was, I feel so emotional over the let down I could just cry.
If anyone is going to check this review out please read till the final full stop.
The whole cast had biblical names, Cain, Ezra, Isaac, Cain, Gabriel, Rev (short for reverend author?) etc. Additionally, to the names Cain kept being referred to as the devil and descriptive words like ‘devil, demon, demonic energy’ amongst others were thrown around to make this read so much like a Bible fanfic. This is not a mercenary romance book, it’s a Bible fanfic with a mercenary theme. As someone who grew up in the Catholic faith I couldn’t take it seriously just as I would have trouble taking seriously reading a contemporary/mercenary book with characters named after Greek mythology gods like Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Zeus, Hades etc.
Similarly, as someone who grew up in the Bangtan Army I also would have a hard time distancing an independent book from a fanfic if all the MCs were named after BTS members…One Directioners too, you follow? One name, two names, it makes sense but 6+ all from the Bible? It’s a choice mate and it’s one that greatly disappointed me and my time, I had purchased this book on kindle and physical copy. I deserve a full refund because I feel misled. I love fanfics, they’re what got me into mmromance thanks Vkook and Larry Stylinson so it’s not an attack of fanfics. It’s just that if I’m about to read one, let me know instead of tricking me into it.
This is a book I could’ve enjoyed if only it wasn’t a Bible fan fiction. Sadly, instead of keeping engaged in the story I kept going back to the Bible to see if these fics ever had interactions to build some chemistry for. That was even worse because imagine reading reading a Harry Potter fanfic and Draco is said to best friends with…oh forget it…this was my worst read of 2024
I was so lucky to be given an advanced copy of this book and I stayed up until 3 am because I couldn't put it down!! I love the way Abigail wrote and developed these characters, especially Ezra. Read the trigger warnings because this book might not be for everyone but man - it was for me. The way Ezra could go from sassy and silly to vulnerable was truly art. And the way his pain was described and his mental health was relatable (to me) and was written amazingly. The juxtaposition of him and Cain was entertaining and REV - gosh he might just be my most favorite side character ever.
Just loved loved loved this dark, gritty emotional love story. No 3rd act break up or the dreaded miscommunication trope. I can't wait for more in this world.
Okay, I see what was happening here and I can see where some things went wrong. I’m not entirely sure if the vibes were off or if it was me but something just didn’t click.
The spice was spicy. The romance was romancing but I think the characters themselves just didn’t click. I didn’t get it. The switch from “he’s hot” to “I’m in love with him” didn’t happen for me and I didn’t believe it.
Also, the guy had a large piece of wood go through his leg or land on his leg or something and approximately 24 hours later is sprinting into battle? Nah.
Additionally, I will never believe that a CEO, ex-SpecOps turned merc has TWO (not one, but two) ombré forest half sleeve tattoos. I just won’t.
I think the world it great but idk. It’s probably me.
DNF 33%. It started off interesting enuf. Then quickly derailed from there. Thus far the only interesting person is Rev, the psycho. Cain just seems like a hot-tempered violent person. Who goes around cutting ppl’s faces? Before he even knows who the guy is??
And Ezra seems to be a masochist. Seems he likes being hurt. Just unnatural dialogue and behavior for these dangerous kinds of men…
Ezra is 23, but acts like he's both 13 and 30. I don't just mean he's an unserious 23 year old, but his actions DO NOT match his age by a whole decade.
So this is my first read by this author. I wasn’t sure how to rate it because it was definitely more than 4 stars but not all the way to 5. 4.25-4.5
I’ll start by saying the writing is really good!! It’s super easy to read and it’s also engaging so I was pretty hooked from the first page.
We have Ezra who is 22/23 (one of those) who is a homeless thief after escaping the clutches of an evil man when he was just 12 yrs old. He finds himself intertwined with some shady men who make him do a job that leads him to Cain (35 or 36). Cain is an ex Special Forces turned businessman/mercenary. He takes out the trash basically.
I loved that they meet so early on in the book. I hate when books drag out the meeting between the two MCs. They meet by I think the second or third chapter. It’s lust at first sight for them both however they don’t trust it because of their circumstances.
I loved Ezra. I thought he was so sweet but also could be very sassy. He’s been through it and he was just trying to get by while taking care of an old man he met when he first escaped and has been by his side ever since. He was in definite need of some love and attention. I wouldn’t say he had “betrayed by his body syndrome” but he was definitely betrayed by his mind and heart a little because he forgave Cain so easily when he was an ass to him. He’s been used to that type of treatment so it was easy for him to accept it.
Cain was harder to like at first. He was a tough shell to crack. He’s also been through it and doesn’t trust easily. He was a little hot and cold before he took his head out of his ass. He definitely redeemed himself though. He ended up being so sweet to Ezra and decided he would treat him how he deserved to be treated.
There was a trope in here that I hate though and that was the dead ex trope. Cain has the dead ex and when I read that at first I was like ugh book ruined. BUT!! He is in no way pining or still in love with this man. He doesn’t compare him to Ezra and he doesn’t think about him too much. He’s not yearning for him. He definitely cares about Ezra more than he ever did his ex and he gave Ezra a first that no one has ever had before. With his ex he was just going through the motions of what he thought he was supposed to do in a relationship but with Ezra he did stuff because he wanted to.
Ezra explained that everything he has done sexually in the past has been without his consent so Cain is his first as far as consensual things happening. And Cain is NOT a manwhore. He’s been celibate about a year and before that it was here and there.
There are definite triggers in this book, I’ll put those below with safety.
I loved Rev so much. I loved that he was a psychopath but was so sweet to Ezra. I get manwhore vibes from him though. Not like a raging manwhore but he definitely gets around and we have a scene of him doing somebody on the couch that I could have done without. But I think I will really enjoy his book which is next. I’m hoping for a book with Alaric and I sense some vibes between Forest and Rorick so I hope they get their own book too!!
-NO CHEATING -NO OM DRAMA BUT CAIN IS POSSESIVE -NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP -MURDER -SELF HARM (MMC) -CHILD TRAFFICKING
This was, overall, an enjoyable read for me for this new-t0-me author.
This was an interesting, if fairly unrealistic, concept.
Cain is the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, somehow, that was really a front for him having mercenaries and them all basically being a company of assassins that take out bad guys. And I guess they got their money from "clients" and all, but enough to have billions of dollars? And also the government knows about it but does nothing about it?
I mean, I can almost believe it, because many in the government are corrupt AF, but also I don't at the same time. At least not to the scale of letting a whole ass billion dollar company just run around killing people left and right, even if they're bad people.
That aspect just felt highly unrealistic, but once you kind of let that part go and just enjoy the story for what it is, it was really good.
Also for Ezra, who has a horrible past and spent the last 11 years of his life on the streets, seeing him get to live in the lap of luxury was nice to see.
I really liked Ezra and Cain together, their chemistry was really good and they felt natural together. I also enjoyed all the other cast of characters at the "company" as well. I do wish the sex had been a bit more frequent, more detailed and a bit more passionately written at times, but what we did get was still good.
What also contributed to my one star off was just that this was a bit slow at times. I don't know why, but it just was. I liked it and enjoyed it, but I wasn't sucked into it and it didn't capture my attention like I hoped it would.
It picked up at times, especially near the end, but it was kind of like an up and down feeling for me of being into it and then taken a break as it slowed down a bit.
But, aside from those few niggles, I enjoyed the rest of this. I of course adored the devotion between Cain and Ezra (I love when big, badass assassins fall head over heels for their men in these stories and would do anything for them) and couldn't get enough of it. Cain being the only one Ezra allowed to touch him was also something I loved. Cain was the exception for everything for Ezra and I loved that.
So this definitely has me intrigued for more from this author. There are quite a few possibilities for the next MC's in this series, so I'm interested in seeing their stories as well. Whether it be Rev, Aiden, one of the other mercenaries or Isaac, perhaps - although with Isaac this book hinted at him having something with one of the other women employs so who knows if he'll ever get a book or not.
I look forward to whoever gets a love story next! 😘
This is the first book,I’ve read from this author and I was not disappointed🥰.This is a Beautiful Traumatic heartbreaking book with a beautiful ending.I love the main characters as much as I loved the side characters.I enjoyed reading the book.
Ezra and Cain are two different people with two different stories and upbringing but they both are going through some form of trauma.Ezra is trying to escape his past trauma and abuse and Cain is trying to come to terms with the fact that he will never be the same person he was before enlisting in the military, because of all the killing and the things he’s seen. The two of term becoming each other’s calm and safe place was of the most beautiful moments in the book.
*ARC review* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of Ignite by Abigail, and wow! What a journey!
My 2024 top read! 🏆
Firstly, Abigail is such a talented author, able to create such strong characters and draw you in with a powerful storyline - I was literally hooked from page one!
We have Ezra, beautiful soul, living on the streets with his best mate and surrogate father Jakey (legend!). Ezra has a troubled past, and I love how it's unravelled throughout the story, including how it haunts him and the support he receives.
Then we get to the giant marshmallow that is Cain, CEO, billionaire and ex militarily - but an absolute melt when it comes to the affections of Ezra (after some softening up of course) 😜
The angst between these two characters at the beginning was literally killing me, but then I enjoyed the edging of will they won't they - and if not why not?! (maybe I'm a literature masochist? 😜)
Rev deserves a special mention, because..well, he's Rev (you'll agree when you read it!) I literally cannot wait for more Rev! ❤️🔥
Really enjoyed this story. Started out so edgy and intriguing. Ezra happens to be in the way when Cain is hunting his next mark, and catches his attention. Later on, Ezra coincidentally breaks into Cain's company. Cain swears he's going to kill him...any minute now, but decides to keep him captive instead.
It's really not a dark read as far as tone, though some of the themes are definitely dark. (Child trafficking history) Wish it would've been a little longer.
I don’t know where to start. This book was just what I needed!
Ezra has had a very dark childhood and then grew up on the streets. His only way of surviving, is being a skilled thief. When he is given an ultimatum he has no choice but to break into Sinro Enterprises. What he doesn’t know is that the company is a front for mercenaries who cleanse the streets from the worst men in existence.
Cain is the CEO of Sinro. He is ex Special Ops who used his skills to start his company and save people. When he catches Ezra breaking in, he isn’t sure why he isn’t killing him on the spot! He offers him protection in exchange for information instead!
The attraction between the two is instant but they both resist for different reasons. Cain is 13 years older than Ezra and has been betrayed before. Ezra has had his past haunting him and is suffering mentally.
I loved how both men had fears to overcome and nothing was fixed with a magic wand. There was a lot of communication and fighting demons along the way. But they both did anything they could for one another.
Cain is absolutely whipped even when his thief pushes all his buttons. And Ezra pushed himself to get better for his man!
The spice was top notch! What is it about the top bottomming for the first time because he trusts his lover implicitly and wants to give them everything?😩🔥
The book was packed with action and pain, found family and love! It was a beautiful story. Sort of like Cinderella but make it MM and deliciously dark. I can’t wait for Rev’s story😈
This one was actually so good that I was not braining the negative reviews because from the plot, to the way everything unfolds at the very end? I loved it. And this one definitely made me teary at some parts, especially at Ezra's and his unraveling.
If there's one thing that the author had done right is the depiction of trauma in here. Good lord Ezra's dissasociating and panic attacks were a true depiction of someone having a meltdown (take it from me, someone that actually knows whats up) and the shame that had he felt after his meltdowns were so brilliantly portrayed, I wanted to go into the book and give him a huge hug. I liked the whole idea and plot of this book.
If there's one thing that could be changed is how fast both of them fell for one another? but good lord i love clingy, possesive partners :')))))))) And I liked that, its realistic in a way that even if they both have traumas, they worked out their inner demons through therapy. And the action scenes in here and how it all unfolded towards the end? I was SATISFIED.
Took me by suprise but wow I enjoyed the whole book. Ex-military turned into assasin killing only problematic villains? sign me up. I want more of this series definitely.
Solid book from a newer author. I really loved Ezra, he's a broken boy with a lot of trauma that bounces off the walls with too much energy. We see him start to heal from his trauma and fall in love with Cain, the scary mercenary who has a sweet spot for him. I would have liked a bit more focus and detail with Cain and Ezra's backstories and more of a true slow burn. All things considered, they did get together pretty quickly. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well and look forward to getting their books.
We stan for a love story between two completely broken, traumatized, alpha males leaning into their version of compassionate, sensitive, and very so co-dependent emotional maturity. It's messy, it's bloody, it's moronic, but all in the best way.
I devoured this and would love a sequel about Rev. And then Isaac. And then Salem.
Also, Jakey FOREVER! He's our collective adoptive dad now.
