“Graduating Early Was Supposed to Be My Escape—Until I Had to Play ‘Therapist’ to My Best Friend’s NFL Star Brother”
Payson, a sharp and determined college sophomore with dreams of becoming a therapist, has her life all mapped out: ace her classes, steer clear of distractions, and break free from her turbulent home life. Everything’s going according to plan—until she’s tasked with finding a “client” for a psychology class that could fast-track her degree.
Enter Luke.
He’s a brash NFL rookie, making noise on and off the field. When Luke is roped in as Payson’s unwilling client, the game changes. He’s everything Payson can’t stand: a fame-chasing playboy with an ego as oversized as his career goals. As their sessions progress, hidden layers start to peel away, revealing Luke’s unexpected depths and Payson’s concealed scars. Confronting their pasts and grappling with their present, Payson and Luke soon realize their futures may be more intertwined—and more unpredictable—than they ever imagined.

firstly thank you to charli for reaching out and allowing me an early copy of this book ❤️
I love sports romance and I also love the brothers best friend trope, this book has a healthy dosage of both as well as some talk of heavy topics and good character development. a
Fighting for redemption takes you on a ride where you meet luke and payson who don’t like one another, they don’t get along and often find themselves butting heads but after one drunken night that changes. I loved this book because the character development was done so well, both luke and payson were dealt a pretty crappy hand and seeing them find some sort of splice with one another was great. I enjoyed the therapy sessions and overall i think the topics were handled fairly well.
this book was cute, and the heavy topics contributed well to the development of the fmc and mmc relationship. I would check TW though before reading just to be safe ❤️
This was my first book by Charli Cotner, and it definitely won’t be my last! I binge-read this book in one sitting—couldn’t put it down!😍
The story follows Payson, a college therapy student, and Luke, an NFL player caught in a scandal who’s required to get therapy. The catch? 🏈 Luke is also Payson’s best friend's brother. 🤭
What really made this book stand out for me was how it explored the deep traumas of both characters. The vulnerable moments between them were so raw and emotional, adding so much depth to the story.🥹🤍
Payson and Luke’s relationship is everything! The banter and tension between them were electric 🔥❤️🔥, but what I loved most was how pure their love felt. It’s a slow burn that felt so real, which is something I deeply appreciated.
You could feel their connection growing with every chapter, and the emotional payoff was worth the wait. The ending tied everything up so perfectly, it was like the story was wrapped up with a bow.🥰
Fighting for Redemption is not only packed with passion but also tackles some heavy topics, so please check out the trigger warnings before diving in.
It’s a story that balances angst, heart, and love in such a beautiful way.
Thank you, Charli and Love Notes PR, for the opportunity to read this ARC!💞
A sweet, spicy, sports romance that gives you all the enemies to lovers vibes you could possibly want!
So many books advertise enemies to lovers, but I think Charli gave us a TRUE enemies to lovers book when she wrote Luke and Payson's story. And not only did she give us a real enemies to lovers story, she actually gave us a REAL sports romance showcasing various football plays, action, and more, not just the mention of practices or games.
Luke and Payson's story was INTENSE. Luke was so cocky and arrogant at the beginning of this story that I felt truly sorry that Payson even had to put up with him, especially since he's her best friends brother... OOF. But Charli did a great job giving Luke (and Payson) character growth to allow them to make amends and fall in love - the power of therapy is real y'all.
The tension between Luke and Payson was palpable, and I couldn't wait for it to break. You know that moment when the enemies finally become lovers and you do your little happy dance? Yeah, there's a great moment for that in this book lol.
Both of our characters had endured so much in their past that it's no wonder Luke is struggling to control his anger, and Payson sought out being a therapist as her future career. Despite their traumas, Luke and Payson's story is one of resilience, courage, and growth. Their fight for redemption lead them to each other and gave them one of the best gifts - love.
The reason this book was 4 stars for me is for a few reasons. Luke's character in the beginning was really hard to get around... When he felt no remorse for being with a married man's wife (even if he DIDN'T know she was married), his inner monologue after that event was really difficult to process. I can handle a cocky NFL player, but someone with no remorse like that was tough. I also thought there were a lot of similes and metaphors and "extra" descriptions throughout the book. I love a good depiction with details as much as the next person, but their were a lot them to the point of being excess. Lastly, when Payson goes out to the club for her birthday, it felt like a little plot hole when her friends just abandoned her with no reason. I was left a little confused during that part.
Overall, I want to thank Charli for the opportunity to ARC read for her. This book really is a testament to the power of therapy, and I think she does a wonderful job getting that message across.
Up next, I'm excited for Berry and Rayne's story!!! Single parents FTW!
❤️🔥Fighting for Redemption By Charli Cotner❤️🔥 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5
Hello Readers!! Today I bring you my review of “Fighting for Redemption” by @authorcharlicotner. This is my first foray into sports romance.
The story follows Payson, the best friend of an NFL player’s sister. From the start, the tension between Luke and payson is palpable; they hate each other, but little by little, through their forced interactions and the circumstances that bring them together, love begins to blossom. The dynamic between them is a true example of the “enemies to lovers” trope, and Cotner executes it perfectly.
Payson carries an emotionally heavy backstory, dealing with the abuse her mother faces at the hands of her father, which affects her ability to open up and trust others. On the other hand, Luke also has his own traumatic past, and the way Payson becomes his therapist adds a layer of depth to their connection. Both characters experience impressive growth, making their relationship feel genuine and real.
Charli Cotner’s writing is captivating, and her ability to approach difficult topics with sensitivity is remarkable. The evolution of Payson and Luke’s relationship, marked by mutual support and therapy, is a beautiful representation of how love can be a healing force.
Why I gave it four stars. Slow stories aren’t my thing, but as the chapters went by I started to enjoy how the tension between them grew with each chapter and that he was internally crazy about Payson but didn’t want to admit it. He fell first.
Recommended for those who enjoy authentic and touching love stories. Don’t miss it!

What a wonderful book with well developed and beautifully thought out characters. It’s sweet, romantic, and emotional (yes, I cried). 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 solidified my love for the enemies to lovers trope. It’s elite and 𝙿𝚊𝚢𝚜𝚘𝚗 + 𝙻𝚞𝚔𝚎 did it so well. I loved each of them and truly enjoyed watching their relationship grow throughout the book. Charli Cotner’s writing has a way of making you feel deeply connected to these characters. I couldn't get enough of them. Genuinely adored 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 and highly recommend checking it out.
Thank you Love Notes PR and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this early! I have very mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I couldn't stop reading it. I enjoyed the story and I really liked Payson and Luke. I loved how they both healed from trauma and became better and healthier people for each other. However on the other hand, there was something missing. I think it was that we never really got the chance to actually see them both working through their trauma. I really wish that there were more scenes of the sessions Luke and Payson had instead of just making references to it. I wanted to see more vulnerability from them and those sessions would've done that. I just feel we missed out on so much. It felt like all of a sudden they really started having feelings for one another. That's really my only complaint. All in all though, I did enjoy it and grateful I was given the opportunity to read this.
I love a good enemies to lovers and the tension in this book could be felt between Payson and Luke. Both characters are dealing with a lot in their personal lives and trying to navigate that. The story and plot was really great pacing to unfold their past history and how they deal with it together and overcome the past and grow to fall in love with one another. It was such a great sweet story with a lot of depth. I also enjoyed we saw more from Miles and Milli from the first book Fighting Fate.

I received this book as an advanced reader copy midway through this month. I didn’t realize that it was the 2nd book in the series, but I don’t think it prevented me from understanding what was going on. It did take me a while to get into the book, like a couple of days, however, once I got halfway through, I read the rest in a day because I could not put it down. I do want to read more from this author when I have time.
A decent read and I enjoyed how together, both MCs were able to heal from their guilt and trauma that they shouldn't have had to bear in the first place. I liked how supportive they were of each other and gave each other strength when the other was in a vulnerable state. Hopefully, some of the editing issues will be dealt with before its release, such as random POV switches (no indication) and some scene inconsistencies.
This had the potential to be great. It just fell a little short for me. I think if we had more focus on their therapy sessions and relationship, this would've hit! Overall, it's a good read.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fighting For Redemption. This is book #2 but you can read this book as a standalone. This book is more than just a sports romance novel. It’s 2 people who experience trauma and violence who learn to grow together. Mental Health is near and dear to my heart so reading a book that talks whole heartedly what someone experiences when it comes to relationship violence and coping, really touched my heart. The triggers in this book were tastefully created and discussed among the characters. I wouldn’t call this book a mystery per say, but at times, it had my mind wondering; the text messages, Luke’s reason for treating Payson the way he did, what happened to mom, Luke’s game day anxieties. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers relationship between Payson and Luke. The struggles they learned about each other and learning to move forward with their family/past challenges helped Payson and Luke grow in their own relationship.
Enter Luke, with his bad boy reputation and anger preceding him the only person who can help is his little sisters’ best friend and soon to be therapist Paysen. Luke and Paysen are nothing if not polar opposites and basically mortal enemies. With Luke’s career on the line he needs Paysen more than he’d like to admit and maybe, just maybe she needs him too…

Troupes: Enemies to Lovers Best Friends Brother Sports Romance Forced Proximity
Holy guacamole. This book is HOT. The witty banter, them pushing each other’s buttons and the steamy scenes make it the perfect read. Their love story was intense and filled with heavy topics that the author thankfully warns us about in the beginning but if anything it makes their bond even stronger. Their relationship is sweet and spicy and raw and such an emotional rollercoaster. These two people could not be a more perfect couple, their journey of healing trauma and embracing their flaws while working to be better for themselves and each other is exactly the type of story we need right now.
This book offers a compelling sports romance with an "enemies-to-lovers" twist. Luke initially comes across as cold and unlikable, especially tough on Payson, his sister’s best friend. He’s the ultimate bad boy, but his character arc, influenced by therapy, shows real growth.
The chemistry between them is intense, and when their walls finally come down, it feels earned. Their shared journey through pain and healing adds authenticity to their connection. Fans of *The Hating Game* or *The Spanish Love Deception* will find a similar depth here.
You guys, this book was SO GOOD! I loved that it was part of a series and you had a little bit of a back story of some of the characters but learned more about each of them. I was sad to finish this book as honestly I wanted more! I think I enjoyed this one more than the first book. Gave me all the feelings, anger, excitement, love for the characters, spicy romance and at times SPICY! You really learn so much about the characters and how they became who they are. You are in for a surprise.

“let me be a part of that mess. I don’t care what it involves, as long as I’m in it with you.” Luke Sutton✨💋
📌SYNOPSIS: Payson is a psychology college student and is proposed to finish her studies earlier. BUT for that to happen she’ll need a client. On the other hand, Luke is an NFL rookie who’s arrogant and problematic. He’s an athlete and quite famous among women, the thing is he’s a public figure and in order to keep his reputation and his team’s too he needs to change his actions so he’s recommended to do therapy. THIS IS WHEN PAYSON’s AND LUKE’s WORLDS COLLIDE (thanks to Luke’s sister who makes the arrangements, who’s ALSO Payson’s bf). Did I mention they already slept together?
📌TROPES: 🏈 Enemies to Lovers. 🏈 ‘She’s my sister’s best friend’. 🏈 Opposite attract. 🏈 SPORT ROMANCE. 🏈 Psychology’s student + Client. 🏈 Forced proximity.
➡️ WHAT I LIKE?
Payson and Luke’s chemistry. I think they have each other’s tattooed deep inside their bodies. From the beginning they won’t be able to stop thinking about one another and it will be reveal their relationship is (actually) not recently so whether they think about it or not it was a matter of destiny and time for them to end up together.
Their ability to heal their trauma and scars through their relationship. I’m aware that the type of trauma and pain they are both carrying it’s not easy to leave and heal but while Payson helps Luke to question everything and confront some situations and people, Luke will also help Payson to open herself and to stop thinking that she has to solve everything by herself only. It’s a win-win relationship and it’s nice to see them both grow and heal together.
I like how the author talks about toxic relationships and abuse. She gives these topics the importance and seriousness they should have. The developing of those situations are also accurate and I like to see that it’s not something fictional or far away from how it is in reality.
I’ve enjoyed the character’s personality even though I do think Luke was really annoying at first. His attitude and personality was not something I enjoyed much but overall I did like when we got the opportunity to understand him better and see why he acts a certain way.
➡️ WHAT I DONT LIKE?
1. Too much descriptions. I think there’s too many of them and not necessary at times. When there’s too many descriptions it turns boring and hard to keep it up, sometimes you’d get so much of them that you’ll forget what’re you reading about before that. Had to skip it. 2. I think it was a little too cliche and too predictable. The fact that Luke’s sister did the arrangements so that he and Payson would have a therapist-client relationship was kinda weird. I didn’t buy it. Lot of therapists in the world for Luke to end up with Payson? Knowing that she’s not even a therapist exactly but a student? 3. It’s supposed to be a therapist-client relationship but won’t get to see much of that type of interaction. I mean: we would not see much of their sessions and deep talks. I’d have liked to see more of that.
CONCLUSION: It’s a cliché book with lot of descriptions BUT with a good story and unique plot about a guy who’s like a star in the sport field and a girl who’s just wanting to finish her studies while dealing with a toxic family environment.
‼️ CONTENT WARNING: ABUSE. ‼️This was an honest ARC review based on the eBOOK that Love Notes PR provided me. Thanks to the author and thanks to Love Notes for trusting me on doing this review.
I have thoughts on this book, all of them related to the plot and the characters. I think the author is a great writer and I loved her first book in this series. And if there are more in this series I will read those too, I simply had issues with the story of this romance. I only read 75% of the book and then skimmed the last 100 pages to see how it ended, and it just made me frustrated. I also didn’t like that when Payson would tell him ‘no’ or to ‘wait’ when he wanted to kiss her he would say ‘I don’t want to’ and did it anyway, it just felt icky that he didn’t respect her ‘no’. Luke is awful, especially at the beginning. He didn’t take responsibility for anything. The woman who was married that he had sex with in a closet? All her fault, it’s not like he was an active participant in the act that was caught by the husband. He doesn’t need therapy, it’s his dumb coach because it was a stupid one-time thing, that was also a bucket list item? (Gross.) His POV chapters frustrated me so much. Payson is not much better. She is in school to become a therapist and honestly, I think she should be kicked out of her program. Based on how she is with Luke is NOT a good starting point. For one thing, it is incredibly unethical for a therapist to know their client. You cannot be objective when you personally know the client. Luke and Payson have known each other for years due to Payson and Milli, Luke’s sister, being best friends. Not to mention they hate each other. When Milli suggested the Luke be Payson’s client for her clinical class it should have been an immediate no due to ethical rules. But then it gets worse because Payson and Luke start to have feelings and do intimate things, which is grounds for a therapist to loose their license! Not to mention she talks about what she and Luke have discussed to Milli and Brooke. She’s not even graduated or licensed and she has broken the two biggest rules of being a therapist, she needs to be kicked out of her program. Her advisor and professor would not condone the relationship of these two if they actually knew the full extent of it. I get that it’s fiction and I don’t expect these novels to be real stories but come on, can it at least be a bit realistic? The relationship is highly problematic from an ethics standpoint and shouldn’t exist. It ends with Payson still being Luke’s therapist even when they are out as a couple and no one has an issue? And the side plot of Payson’s dad beating his wife? Not cool! Her mom is constantly sending photos of her bruises and injuries and no one does anything?! I got so angry when the dad put the mom in the hospital because he beat her so bad, she was in the ICU and unconscious for a while. And then he strangles Payson when they meet after?! And no cops are called! He just packs a bag and leaves town for ‘help’, he needs the cops called on him. He nearly killed his wife and daughter and then he gets to vanish? Not okay. I was more invested in Berry and his daughter, and Milli and Miles and they were barely in the book. Miles and Milli got their book but I need a Berry book! I do genuinely enjoy Charli’s writing style and I’m bummed that this particular book didn’t hit the mark for me. Thanks to Love Notes PR and Charli Cotner for the ARC.

To start off, thank you kindly to Love Notes PR & the author for sending me an ARC copy of this book. I'm truly grateful to be considered. And now on to my review.
For me, this one took a bit for me to stop and think about after I finished it in terms of what I wanted to rate it. The messages in this book are quite heavy, with a lot of sweet, funny and sexy moments mixed in. We got the perfect forced proximity, enemies to lovers moments between Luke & Payson. The tension between these two was off the charts but when they finally started to settle into things, we were given so many sweet, vulnerable and heartwarming moments. It was nice to see them be each others calming presence. And by the end of it all, they were both in a state of happiness and healing. Overall I'm going to give this one a 4 ⭐️. It wasn't one of my favourite reads but I did appreciate the way the author spoke about quite strong topics. I would also like to point out if you are easily triggered by physical or emotional abuse, then this book might not be for you.
This is really one of those stories of overcoming traumas that have weighed heavy on you for most of your life while also finding some light and love along the way. Its about growing that trust in the person you truly need the most and being vulnerable enough to open up and discuss the things you typically keep to yourself. Its about finding the courage to face your demons head on. And at the core of it all its about speaking up and knowing that you don't have to fight these things on your own. Whether its that one person in your corner or a massive group, know that it is okay to confide in them. Also, never be afraid to seek the support of a therapist 🖤
Luke & Payson as a couple were actually so adorable. They definitely started out very rocky with their clear dislike for one another, that had been growing over the years. But was also charged by a clear attraction for one another. I liked seeing the trust they slowly built towards each other through each session and how they basically became each others rock. Luke really went above and beyond to show how much he cared and even with everything he was going through he never let that over shadow when Payson needed him. And vice versa. Payson, with all her own struggles, still actively just wanted to help him, even right from the beginning when they were still in the hate phase. They bounced off each other so well. Whether it was the quips, flirty banter or knowing what the other needed in any moment. It was so nice to see them just living in their happiness in that epilogue too.
"This woman, she's more than just a temporary fling. She's the type of woman who sneaks up on you, slowly, until you realise she's your forever."
Tropes: 🖤 Enemies to lovers 🖤 Forced proximity 🖤 Best friends brother 🖤 Therapist/Client Relationship 🖤 Sports Romance 🖤 College Romance
Also special shoutout to our kindle reading, bookworm, Maddox. Please tell me we will be getting a book for him sometime soon?
ARC Book Review: Fighting for Redemption by Charli Cotner
4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book had me giggling, blushing and smiling so much! The banter between Luke and Payson was sassy, flirty and fun! It also dove into sensitive topics such as abuse, mental health and therapy. I felt there was a good balance between the light and the heavy topics. . Payson is a sass queen that has the hugest heart. She is also damn good at her career and passion. I loved how her thought process in therapy was described. It got you to see how and why she chose certain questions and statements to prompt Luke. She created a safe space for him to open up and share his vulnerabilities and deepest secrets. All while helping Luke, she was trying to work through her trauma and vulnerabilities as well. My heart broke for her and everything that transpired with her parents. I’m happy and glad she opened up to Luke and had him for support while everything happened. Her strength and resilience is evident throughout the book. Payson has the best girlfriends, Milli and Brooke! All of them together sounds like a blast! I would love to have monthly margarita nights and go line dancing with the girls too! . Luke is one damn charming, infuriating and sexy man. His cocky, playboy persona was definitely frustrating at the beginning and Payson broke down his barriers and his true self shined through. The way Luke fiercely loves and cares for Payson warms my heart! You could just feel all the love through all his words and actions. He had me swooning the whole time! All his t-shirts with the pun sayings had me cracking up! His teammates are hilarious and I loved his relationship with each of them! . The fiery tension and passion between Luke and Payson was electric. Luke in the bedroom is hot hot hot 🥵. That filthy mouth! I also love a man who lets the woman take charge in the bedroom. Their hatred for each other definitely turned to liking/understanding to eventual love! ❤️ Overall, Luke and Payson’s story was beautiful and I loved this book!! Really hoping we get to see more of them!!
Thank you so much @authorcharlicotner for the ARC!!
I was blessed enough to receive an ARC copy of Fighting for Redemption by Charli Cotner. I recommend this book to anyone who like sports romances, romances, and books with mental health representation.
This book was so good. There is a lot that went into this book. I loved the characters and the plot line of the book. I liked the writing style of Charlie Cotner. The plot line of the book was so good. It was well paced and had me on the edge of my seat the last half of the book. Chapters 28-33 had me yelling at the book because actions of different characters. I was kind of nervous reading this book because I did not know how the pacing would work with the tropes in this book. Sometimes these books can either feel drawn out or rushed but it was honestly perfect.
The FMC is Payson. She is a Sophmore/Junior in college that is working to become a Therapist. She is kind and caring while also being secretive and stubborn. She makes you love her throughout the book, but there was a point where I was like "Girl, your getting what you wished for. Just because its not in the manner you thought it would be, doesn't mean it is not for the best." Luke is your MMC. He is a Tightend in the NFL. He is dealing with his own demons but it coming into the light about the biggest and grayest cloud in his life. Luke on the surface level is your stereotypical football player, while deep down he is just trying to make others and himself proud, caring, and searching for his own happiness. The side characters were well written also. They helped to carry the story.
Charlie Cotner's writing style is different for me. She does not use a lot of dialog to drive her story. The way she sets that scene and talks about what is going on in the minds of the characters is like poetry. The wording was just so beautiful. Having more descriptions compared to dialog usually makes it hard for me to geting the story but this time it just worked for the story because they both have thier own anxieties and it helped to connect you to the characters better. This book is dual POV.
I did not read the first book in this series before reading this and I do not feel like I missed a lot of information. I will be going back to read the first book though. I excited to read more my Charli Cotner.
TROPES: forced proximity opposites attract enemies to lovers best friend’s brother
fighting for redemption is the second book in the series northridge university but it can be read as a standalone. if you want to read everything without spoilers, start with fighting fate. this book addresses heavy topics so be sure to check the triggers before diving in !
payson and luke have hated each other since forever but everything changes after a one night but the story truly begins when luke’s sister, aka payson’s best friend, finds out about the hookup and now she kind of can see them as a couple, something neither of them can accept !
they are forced to work together when payson needs to complete a psychology class for early graduation which requires her to have a client and working on their goals. the client turns out to be luke, a football player struggling with issues since his coach stated a mandatory therapy. trust is something they never had but it becomes essential for their dynamic to work.
unfortunately i didn’t feel connected to this read, it was an okay book to me, it had some heavy topics but payson and luke weren’t memorable to me, the enemies to lovers part wasn’t realistic, more like childish. payson had to deal with her family while luke needs to face the ghosts from his past. i also think the author tried to work with multiple tropes and popular lines but it didn’t turn work.
i only finished this book because it was an arc, otherwise i probably would have dropped at 11%. explaining the context, luke hooks up with a woman who turned out to be married and he had no idea, and when the husband catches them together, luke tries to explain that he didn’t know. after, he tells his teammates that everything happened because she was constantly hitting on him through out the night but instead of saying this, he drops that “she was asking for it”. i didn’t really like how the author wrote this scene, she could have just said “she was hitting on me and i didn’t know she was married” or something like that to avoid the implication.
thank you to charli cotner and love notes pr for the arc !
This book was amazing don’t get me wrong with the rating, but there was something missing. It was the lack of therapist-client relationship, we just got references to it instead of being there with them.
Payson is in college working to become a therapist, leaving her family problems behind and wanting to help people overcome their problems. I love her so much but there were times I was like “erm girly you brought that on yourself..” but other than that she was super admirable. Her life was full of guilt, becoming so afraid to tell people her story because she felt afraid people were going to judge her when all she needs is to be loved.
Luke is a playboy who only cares about family and football. He’s self-centered and struggles to control his anger and shows no remorse for his actions. Knowing this book was a therapist and client relationship, I kept my mind open and I did not regret it. You will understand him and be like damn. He has such a good character growth and isn’t afraid to admit his feelings.
The ability to use their relationship to mend their scars and suffering. I appreciate the author's discussion of abusive relationships. She treats these topics with the seriousness and significance they need. The events that are being developed are also realistic, and I appreciate that they are not made up or really different from reality.
The POV would suddenly change throughout the book, making it very difficult to determine whose POV you were reading. I had to go back and read the book multiple times to understand what had happened and what I had missed, but it was really simply a case of the writing being unclear and clumsy.
A part that really threw me off was the fact that Luke was referred to as Payson's client and Payson as a therapist. Payson wasn't a licensed therapist, and it was careless to refer to her as such throughout the narrative when, in fact, she was a student working on a project for a class to advance her education. Additionally, it is extremely unlikely that an NFL team, would recommend therapy for a star player in an attempt to change his mindset and permit him to work with a student instead of a qualified professional.
I love a good sports romance. With all of the different sports romances out there, it is always good to see one from a different sport. We don’t get but so many football romances and I always enjoy reading them when I see them because I am a big football fan. I appreciate when the author of a sports romance seems to actually understand the sport and is able to accurately portray it on the page. I know that not everyone like to read something with a little bit of trauma and angst, but I think it adds so much to the story. It gives it depth that keeps my attention. The book did have lengthy descriptions which can be both bad and good. I personally can appreciate the author painting a detailed picture with their words. I loved the characters’ chemistry with each other and thought that the story was entertaining to read.
One of my favorite positions in football happens to be the tight end. It’s good to see a MMC that isn’t the “star” position of quarterback. But just because Luke wasn’t the flashiest position on the field, it didn’t stop me from wanting to punch him at times for his cocky attitude. But as the book progresses, you find that Luke has his own issues that he is dealing with. He is deeper than the one dimensional football player that he appears.
In my experience, therapists tend to be people that have their own litany of issues. While Payson is still a student, she fits that picture of a therapist well. Your heart can break for her as you read what she is dealing with. Reading her growth throughout the book and her connection with Luke was one of the best parts of this story. I always appreciate an enemies to lovers story and this was one that was done so well.
There are so many sports romances out there, so it is so nice to see one where there is trauma and hurt as well as fantastic mental health representation. We often see people in society look down on therapy and label it as something for the weak. It is so nice to see therapy shown in such a positive light. This book had some good spice to it but I didn’t find that it was too much. It didn’t take away from the flow of the story.
ARC review ⭐4.5/5 🌶️2/5 📌Be sure to check out the trigger warnings before diving in, as there are some sensitive themes involving the main characters.
Wow, this book left me speechless...I don’t how to put into words all the emotions I felt while reading Luke and Pay’s story.
There are many enemies to lovers books out there that are really good, but this book is more than that… Luke has despised Pay since they were teenagers due to a huge misunderstanding. And Pay tried her best to reciprocate those feelings by ignoring his existence. They didn’t care for each other, that is until Payton needs to find a “client” for her psychology class, and Luke is forced to start therapy due to his coach’s demands.
Luke is an arrogant playboy who has his mind set in being Rookie of the year. He only cares about his family and football, he’s self-centered, struggles to control his anger and shows no remorse for his actions. I’m telling you Luke is character you might not like at first, but that is until he starts therapy, and things begin to change in a realistic and fantastic way. He has an amazing character growth and becomes a real man who is not afraid to admit his true feelings anymore and who is ready to love Pay the way she deserves.
And Payson, my sweet Payson…my heart was in shambles for her… Her life is so empty, so sad, so full of guilt and pressure… She’s lonely and afraid to tell the world her real story because let’s face it, people are judgy and she didn’t need to be judged, she needed to be loved. I admire and respect her healing journey, it was not an easy one, she struggled a lot, but I’m happy she decided to rely on Luke and let him support her.
Both characters endured so much in their past, yet together they were able to fight for their redemption.
I definitely loved this book! And, if you enjoy sports romance stories that portrait real-life issues, and that are also filled with depth then this one is for you!
Thank you, Charlie and Love Notes PR for allowing me to read this great ARC!
Check the trigger warnings. This books deals with a lot of past trauma, abuse (on page).
I liked that enemies to lovers aspect and liked seeing how Payson helped Luke and how they came together. You could feel the tension and eventually feel the love that they had for each other. I also enjoyed that this was a best friends brother situation and that the MC’s weren’t really sneaking around, and the sister was truly happy for them.
While the premise of this story kept me reading and there were things that had me continuing on, there were several issues I had with this book. This book was roughly 100 pages too long with lots of unnecessary information that kept the story dragging.
The POV would change in the middle of the book with absolutely no warning and it became incredibly confusing as to whose POV you were on, forcing me to go back and reread several times to figure out what happened and what I missed when really it was just a lack of clear concise writing.
The conversations between characters would randomly pick up in the middle of a paragraph making me think that several lines were deleted, or that I skipped a whole page, when really the authojust didn’t do a good job of moving the conversation forward. It was so confusing. Time lines weren’t consistent either, especially in the epilogue.
Finally, the least believable part of this story and the part that bugged me the most was that Payson was referred to as a therapist and Luke was referred to as her client. When in reality Payson was a student doing a project for school to move her studies forward, she wasn’t a licensed therapist and it was irresponsible to call her that throughout the story. It’s also incredibly unlikely that an NFL team (Professional Athletes) would suggest a star player get therapy as part of a way to revamp his attitude and allow him to work with a student rather than a licensed professional.
The overall idea and plot of this story was a good idea, but this felt like a very inexperienced author who could have benefited from some deep edits.
Rate: 2.8 stars First of all, I have to thank @lovenotes.pr for the chance to read this book in advance. I always appreciate stories that have their amount of banter and spicy, but most of all, have more to say than that. Here, I'm in a difficult situation where I liked some aspects and I was bothered by others. A part of me wanted to DNF it. At a certain point I was so bored by Luke's arrogant behavior and some trivial scenes I struggled to arrive at the end. So, my first impression is that this book could have been shortened a little, and could focus in a better way on those theme it promised to explore more: family abuse and violence, mental abuse, the good influence of therapy to control rage and deal with past issues, etc. All of those topics are very interesting to me, but I personally didn't like how the author included them in the general plot. They were the only reason I decided to keep reading it, but they didn't fully convince me. Then, there's that past event that made Luke hostile and excessively harsh toward Payson, that was clarified only in the epilogue (yes, really)... why? It could be a matter of discussion between them, while they gradually discovered each other and fell in love. And, talking about that, I really struggled to see the switch between enemies to lovers. Ok, the physical attraction was there, but what about the rest? What I really liked, besides the main characters chemistry that was never in question and that part was absolutely well written, was Luke's football team. I appreciated how its members had all different personalities and how they always supported Luke, coach included. But talking about people close to Luke, since they seemed to have a good relationship... what about his family? I can imagine that due to what happened Luke kept some distance from his parents, but they seemed to me a concrete presence in his life, always there for his games, with a lively family chat, so... where were they during all those months?
I don't know, maybe it was just a matter of a missing additional work on the entire story and subplots, or simply it wasn't my cup of tea. A real pity.
i'd like to thank the author for gifting me an ARC! this is the second installment in an ongoing series but can be read as a standalone.
this is a sweet, zesty sports romance with a healthy representation of mental health issues and a dash of enemies to lovers energy. i wouldn't call Luke & Payson enemies per se, but they do butt heads a lot. in all honesty, i wasn't prepared to like this book as much as i did. their banter? their intimate moments? their flirting? i ate it upppp!!! the tension between them is SOOO good & so palpable, you won't be able to get enough of them!!
i like how we got to see so much of the MCs' back stories; the guilt that they had to carry their entire lives for things they didn't even commit was communicated really well. the pacing was great all throughout and things were resolved neatly by the end. the reason why MMC even hated the FMC in the first place ends up being really trivial, though i see how it could've affected his perceptions, given his own trauma. i loved their therapy sessions & Luke's funny shirts & how that tied in during the ending scene!
god, i felt so bad for Payson all throughout. the topic of abusive parents was handled fairly well, but it bothers me that we never got to see her mom apologise for dragging her into this mess, so much so that even getting a text from her was enough to trigger panic attacks for Payson. no child should ever have to be the 'mediator.' we also don't really see enough of friendships in this book either; it felt like FMC's bffs existed mostly only in name. although, i will give my thanks to Mili, the matchmaker 🫂
overall, this is a cute enough read with real-life issues that might be triggering for some (nothing of the sort b/n MC's tho!) so pls do proceed with caution. i loved the ever-growing tension & dynamics b/n the MC's a lot & i would definitely recommend this book!!
thanks to Love Notes PR and Charli Cotner for gifting me an ARC! 🫶🏼💞
From the very first chapter, with its spicy opening, I knew this book was going to be a fantastic read—and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Watching Payson and Luke grow as they confronted their personal struggles was powerful and both heart-wrenching and heartwarming. Their journey from holding everything inside to slowly opening up to one another was beautifully done. I’ve read quite a few enemies-to-lovers romances, but this one truly stood out. The emotional depth had me hooked, and the highs and lows kept me on a rollercoaster I didn’t want to get off of.
Despite the heavy emotions, the book also had some great light moments, like Luke’s hilarious T-shirts. One of my favorites was, "I’m tackling my issues, one play at a time." It added a perfect touch of humor.
This was my first time reading a Charli Cotner book, but it definitely won’t be my last. Her writing style is captivating, and the way she handled the tropes was spot on.
Be sure to check out the trigger warnings before diving in, as there are some sensitive themes involving the main characters.
