Pretending to be the Mountain Man's Wife

Rate this book
In the wild mountains of the Montana Territory, the Coulter ranch is a place of family, second chances…and a hidden fortune.

Determined to find his missing brother and catch the elusive mastermind behind the theft of his family's precious sapphires, Gil Coulter embarks on a solo mission to the remote town where the criminal is rumored to reside. As Gil scours the surrounding wilderness for the thief's hidden lair, he crosses paths with a captivating young woman who harbors secrets of her own.

Jess McPharland has spent her life hidden in the mountains, doing her best to stay separate from her family’s business. Yet the secret she’s just discovered will change her life forever. She offers a silent prayer, pleading for a man to help her conceal the truth she’s only just discovered. As if in answer, Gil Coulter rides through the trees, seeking the very criminal Jess calls Father. Now she must find a way to ask this stranger for the ultimate favor—to pose as her husband and shield her from the consequences of a change she won’t be able to hide much longer.

As Gil and Jess navigate the treacherous landscape and the greater danger from her father and his cronies, they find themselves caught in a web of danger, deception, and unexpected attraction. With each passing moment, the stakes grow higher, and the line between pretense and truth blurs. Will the love growing between them be enough to protect Jess's secret and lead them to the justice Gil seeks, or will the truth shatter everything they've risked their lives to build?

4.75 stars.

I really enjoyed this story. This is the 6th book in the series, and I haven’t read any of the others yet, so I can say for sure that it works as a standalone. There are characters from previous books in this one though. I loved both Gil and Jess. Jess is with child. And for the first part of the book I was waiting to see how that had come to be. I loved how Gil was willing to pretend to be married to Jess in order to protect her. I loved watching them interact and learn about each other. I did think the ending was a little abrupt. Overall, I really loved this book and I definitely recommend!

This story is filled with danger, adventure and faith. Jess has lived a sheltered life with her controlling father. She unexpectedly meets Gil who agrees to help her get away by pretending to be her husband. Gil is on the mountain for entirely different reasons but he can’t leave Jess to fend for herself. This is book six in a series about a family of brothers. It works well as a standalone story with an ending that leaves a few things open for the next book.

My thanks to the author for an advanced copy to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A fake marriage, secret tunnels, danger at every turn, & hopeful faith made this story hard to put down. Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife is the sixth story in the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series by Misty M. Beller & features Gil. I’ve loved reading about each of the brothers & how they find love.

Gil Coulter is searching for his missing brother Sampson & also trying to find the culprits who are stealing from their Sapphire mine. He meets the captivating Jess McPharland who also happens to be the daughter of the mastermind over the thieving ring he’s been searching for. But, Jess is in desperate need of his help & she also knows where his brother is. Determined to protect her & use the situation to his advantage, he agrees to be her fake husband.

Jess lost her mother at a young age & finds herself trapped in the mountain lair of her father. The unforgiving, brutal man keeps her under his thumb & when she finds herself in need of a hero, along comes Gil who agrees to pretend to be her husband. As they spend time together, her feelings for him grow, but will he survive her father & his minions.

This story kept me quickly turning the pages. I loved the secret tunnels in the mountain, the search for the missing sapphires, & the slow burn romance between Gil & Jess. Jess is a wounded soul & I loved the way Gil really saw her & gave her the strength & self confidence she desperately needed. Jess is expecting a baby & it isn’t until the end that the father is revealed. I loved the way Gil supports her & shows her true compassion & love.

Highly recommend to Western romance fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

I enjoyed returning to this series to see what adventure awaited the next Coulter brother, Gil. If you haven’t read the other books in the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series, you can still enjoy this one. Most of the storyline takes place away from the family ranch.

I really enjoyed the connection and romantic tension that built between Gil and his fake wife, Jess. I loved the way Gil stepped up to provide protection for Jess before he even knew she was with child. And then, when he discovered that she truly was expecting, he showed what a wonderful man he was. He simply wanted to keep both Jess and her baby safe and continued falling for her.

I wondered how Jess and Gil would get away from Jess’s father and all of his henchmen. There were some tense and dangerous moments in this story. The ending of the book makes it clear that more danger awaits for the Coulter family in future stories. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the book and appreciated getting an advance copy for my honest review. The main characters are Gil Coulter and Jess McPharland. Through a chance meeting this desperate young woman finds unexpected protection from her abusiive father. The story is full of faith and adventure.

The book was shorter than expected and left a few gaps. Gil uses a fake last name but by the end of the story it seemed like an overlooked detail. Perhaps some of their story and loose ends will be continued in the next book in the series but the ending to this book seemed a little abrupt. Still I enjoyed this installment in the series.

Misty M. Beller’s Protecting the Mountain Man’s Treasure beautifully captures the intertwining of tender hearts and steadfast faith in the rugged Montana wilderness. From the moment Gil and Jess cross paths, there’s an undeniable sense of divine orchestration. This story isn't just about danger or intrigue—though it’s packed with those—it’s a tapestry of redemption, trust, and the courage to embrace God’s plan even when it feels impossibly difficult.

Jess’s quiet strength shines despite her challenging past, and Gil’s compassionate heart makes him a hero worth rooting for. Their bond unfolds with a gentle authenticity, reflecting a love rooted in respect and faith. Misty’s ability to bring faith into the story’s fabric is a hallmark of her writing, and it shines here, reminding us of Isaiah 1:18—God’s promise of forgiveness and transformation.

The mountain setting feels as alive as the characters, a breathtaking backdrop to a story filled with twists, danger, and moments of quiet reflection. Misty’s gift for crafting suspenseful yet tender narratives left me reflecting on the power of second chances and the courage it takes to trust God’s will.

I closed this book with a full heart, marveling at how Misty balances adventure, romance, and faith so effortlessly. If you haven’t yet experienced the Coulter brothers’ stories, let this one be your starting point. Jess and Gil will leave you longing for more!

I received an eARC of this book from Celebrate Lit Tour. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the super writing and story’s beautiful content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

TRIGGER WARNING:
Mentions of emotional and psychological abuse are very prevalent in this story. If you have experienced this, it may not be for you.

I almost couldn't finish this as the above mentioned. I have experienced it and it was like reliving it all over again.

Otherwise, it was a very sweet story. I love how Jess was so sweet and honest, when she could have been so conniving and really used Gil
And how Gil treated her and even pretended to be married to her just so her father would not hurt her or her baby. How he stood up to her father on her behalf, even though they were only pretend married. A very great hero❤️

I only wish this book was longer so there could have been more time to explore the past with her father, and the baby. That was a big part and you could see her regret. And how she healed and moved past it and how Gil helped her with that. I love Misty's books
They are always sweet and cute 🥰
I was given an ARC but no review was required. All opinions are my own.

1870 Montana Territory

This novel is an engaging and heartwarming tale. Jess yearns to be free of her cruel father, but her prior attempt failed. Feeling discouraged, she finds a glimmer of hope when she has a chance meeting with a kind man in town. Kindness isn't something she comes across often in her world.

Gil is in town looking for his brother. When Jess shares a bit about her story and asks for help, how can he say no?

The tension was thick at times as the two take risks to find a path away from Jess' powerful father.

I look forward to continuing the series. My gratitude to the author for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Thank you very much for the ARC copy. This is my personal thoughts on this story.

Hook: A fake marriage, ruthless men, and danger fill this book full up.

Overview:

Language/Profanity: None

Faith: This is full of faith, talking to God, characters whose faith grows throughout the story, and trusting in God.

Romance/Sex: Two kisses on the lips, a few kisses on hands, foreheads, etc. Holding hands, hugging/leaning against each other.

Action/Adventure: Full of it. There are dangerous men, gunfighting, and beatings. There is mention of blood, bruises, and broken bones. But not too graphic.)

Other: Jess wasn't exactly attacked and taken advantage of, but in my mind it was close (it all happened before the book started).

Synopsis: In the wild mountains of the Montana Territory, the Coulter ranch is a place of family, second chances... and a hidden fortune.
(I didn't write this.)

I enjoyed this book, the danger and sweet actions and words of Gil. Jess and her struggles and love for her baby. I cried at one point even. *Not all that hard for me though.*
I liked the characters, some more than others, though Gil was a perfect gentleman. It didn’t seem to draw me in as much as some books, but I did really enjoy it, especially the parts when Gill stood up for Jess, treating her with respect and kindness. It didn’t drag for me; I was able to read it in a little over two hours.

Favourites:
My favourite part was when Jess and Gil tell her father they are married.
My favourite quote... I have two today.
Ezekiel looked to Gil then. "Take care of…our girl." Gil’s arm tightened around her. "I will. I promise."
But I need you to know—God forgave you the very first time you asked. He doesn't hold your past against you."
Gil is my favourite character; see above for why...
A fourstar rating, good for any young adult and up who likes romance, danger, fake marriages, surprise babies, and more.

This book checked all the boxes for me. Action, intrigue, a mystery, danger, and more. I was immediately drawn into the story from the beginning. There are twists and turns, unexpected circumstances, and a few surprises!

Gil had my heart from the second he was introduced into the story! His gentleness, compassion, and quick thinking add to his appeal. Jess touched my heart in many ways. Her life is difficult, but she is protected from physical harm. The Coulter family is welcoming and loving.

This book can be read as a stand-alone alone. I do, however, want to read all of the rest in the series because my interest is piqued!

Misty brings a fantastic story with as many twists and turns as the secret cave hideout where her characters find themselves! Coupled with God-honoring romance are inspirational truths, strong family bonds, and memorable characters that linger long in the imagination. This story perfectly balances action and romance for a page-turner you won't be able to put down!

I’ve done nothing all week but read this series. I loved this one. God works His will in the worst places. I loved this story of the girl raised in a cave by evil men, yet God sends a good man to tell her about Jesus before she ever meets Gilead Coulter. This one had my heart in my throat the whole time.

What a story! I loved these characters and they may very well be my favorite yet. I felt so connected to Jess and Gil, their courage and hope is infectious. Not once did the story lag, but instead, kept me often holding my breath and fighting down fear of what would happen next. Every page is filled with excitement and expectation to what will happen to the characters. Is there a chance of freedom for Gil, his brother Sampson, and Jess when every man is under a watchful eye? Can a real romance take root between Gil and Jess, or will Jess’s evil father and his cronies kill the Coulters before they can mange a way out of the caves? Finding myself on the edge of my seat throughout the whole story kept my mind swirling and fully entertained. Although this book can be read as a stand alone I strongly suggest reading every book in this series because each story stands out on its own as a FABULOUS read! I have come to love the Coulter family and don’t want this series to end. Misty Beller has a gift for story telling that wraps you in every page only to leave you wanting more!

This story rocked me from happiness to sadness and back again throughout the whole plot. I was caught in the throes with Jess and Gil as they met everything that came their way: danger, enemies, betrayal, death, cruelty, kindness, friends, family, compassion, and love.

Jess is so sweet and gentle, yet her father is so cruel and wicked. Gil meets her while searching for his brother and agrees to help free her from this hard life. Neither of them counted on how much that freedom would cost. Their friendship grows into more very quickly. The story ends with still some things unresolved within the series, making way for the next brother’s story. Can’t wait!

What a wonderful gem of a story! Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife was the perfect quick read, filled with adventure and romance. This was my second book by Misty M. Beller, and I am quickly realizing why her books are so loved.

Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife was difficult to put down, not only for the beautiful romance but also the suspense! One of the many things that I love about this author’s writing is how she draws you into the story through the suspense and the vivid details of the time period. The setting and characters were so well described that I could picture everything clearly, as if I was in the story myself.

The romance was so sweet in this one. I loved how even though Gil and Jess barely knew each other at the time of her suggestion of a fake marriage to escape her father, Gil still cared and protected Jess through it all. I loved reading how their relationship progressed throughout the story.

Even though this isn’t the first book in this series, I was still able to understand it well enough that it wasn’t necessary to read the others. However, after loving this one like I did, I can’t wait to go back and read the other books in this phenomenal series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

I am so invested in this family of Coulter brothers, y’all. As such, I gobbled up Pretending to Be the Mountain Man’s Wife way too quickly and now I’m waiting not at all patiently for the next book… and even less patiently for the series finale. Not because I want it to be over but because I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WITH SAMPSON. Misty M. Beller is building some marvelous tension across this series with the continuing plot arcs regarding the brothers’ secret sapphire mine, and I am here for it.

Pretending to Be the Mountain Man’s Wife is Gil Coulter’s story (though we do at least lay eyes on Sampson), and I enjoyed getting to know Gil a bit better now that it’s his turn in the spotlight. He is, like his other brothers, a man of integrity who respects women and loves God, and he stands in direct contrast with Jessamine’s cruel & corrupt father. I loved the way Gil cherished Jess from the beginning, even before he had developed feelings for her beyond the initial attraction. The way he treats her is just so sweet and kind and good, and I really appreciated how Beller wrote him – even more so because of how abysmally Jess has been treated before we meet her. Jess’ endearing personality had me in her corner from the beginning, and it was fun to watch them fall in love with each other as they are pretending to be married (for the sake of protecting Jess from her father’s plans for her). Adding to the lovely romantic tension is a thread of danger & suspense, complete with a sprawling complex of catacombs and caverns where you never know who – or what – you’ll run into around the next turn.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a quick read from a Christian worldview with layered characters, sweet romance, thrilling adventure, and immersive settings, look no further than Pretending to Be the Mountain Man’s Wife – and the entire Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series – by Misty M. Beller. This newest book is just as delightful as its predecessors (which I do suggest you read first), and the plot’s engaging twists and turns kept me absorbed in the story until the last word. I found myself cheering for the ‘good guys’ (including Jess) more than once, and I adored Beller’s incorporation of the ‘fake marriage’ trope for Gil and Jess, made all the more meaningful by the heartfelt (but not preachy) message of faith. To say that I am eager for books 7 and 8 would be very much an understatement.

Miner Gil Coulter is on a mission: over two months ago, a full wagonload of crates, each packed tightly with sapphires, were stolen from his family and his brother Sampson has gone missing. He sets out on a mountain quest to recover that which is lost, but instead, he discovers a woman named Jess. “We started talking, and I realized that her living situation wasn't safe. She needed help getting away from her father. Simon McPharland…Jess is nothing like her father…she's tried to escape him before, but his men found her and brought her back.”

“The only way to get her free with her father's approval was to pretend to be married.” To have a husband and father of her unborn child. “Of course, Gil was neither of those things, but Father didn’t know that.” Jess’s promise to reunite Gil with his prodigal brother and return his lost sapphires is not the only reason he agrees to be her fake husband. “From the moment I saw you on the mountain, I knew you were different. I knew I wanted to know you better. And when you said you needed help, there was nothing that would have stopped me…You are special, Jess McPharland. I realized that from the very beginning.”

“I know I only met you a few days ago, but we've been through a few things together…Our situation makes me feel like I know you much better than the short time would usually allow. And one thing I'm certain of is that…I want to court you…I want to know every thought that passes through your mind…I want to be there to protect you. And help you. And make sure you never want for anything. Not shelter. Not food. Not all the wonderful things you deserve. And especially not love."

Cruel decisions, threats, injuries, death, Misty M. Beller’s Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife is a romantic thriller I dare you to put down!

I was so excited for Gil and Jess’ story and ‘Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife’ did not disappoint. I have enjoyed every book in this series so far.
Gil meets Jess while he is looking for his missing brother. When she asks him for help escaping her father, in exchange for finding his missing brother, he couldn’t refuse her. Jess helps Gil find his brother and his family’s stolen goods, but getting out was not easy.
I absolutely love the ‘not his baby’ trope. Jess didn’t know Jesus (at first) and she searched for love in the wrong place. Gil was very understanding and I loved watching them fall in love. Gil was the perfect example of Christ’s unconditional love and Jess never had that from her earthy father.
I highly recommend the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series. You definitely want to read them in order.

Gil and Jess were perfect for each other! I loved that the story focused on having faith in God’s providence, even when you may not understand why your prayers are not being answered in the way that you wanted, and finding your worth in God’s eyes rather than through the eyes of flawed humanity.
The constant danger and heart-pumping moments made this story read like a thriller. It was sooo good! I also loved the way that the hero and heroine struggled so unselfishly to put each other first in all things.
Sweet and thrilling, this book completely captivated me and I am so happy to have been able to enjoy this addition to the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series!

This story was a very sweet romance between Gil and Jess. Even though the timeframe they spend together was short, their romance felt very believable. I loved the tenderness between them and the healing that Jess got from Gil and his family.

This is one story in the middle of a family saga series. The other family members were interesting and I will need to go back to read their stories. The romance is full within this story, but there is an over-arching series story as well and that was a cliffhanger at the end.

I received this book complimentary from the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.

“She would always be Mick McPharland's daughter, and he'd never let her escape his control.”

Misty M. Beller has done it again! She has developed another fresh but related Coulter brother story to add another facet to the diamond that is Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series. Pretending to be the Mountain Man’s Wife is #6 in this series, and it tells the narrative of Gil Coulter and Jess McFarland in 1870s Montana Territory. ( Do yourself a huge favor and read this series in order to avoid spoilers!)

Gil happens upon Jess on a mountainside, where she promises to help him find his missing brother, Sampson. Her price is that he help her escape her father’s control. To explain Coulter’s presence to her conniving, mean-spirited father and henchman, Gil and Jess pretend to be married. As Jess focuses on escaping, Gil insists on exploring and searching for his brother, plus the Coulter family’s jewels that were stolen recently.

This is a story about love and loyalty that give unselfishly and even when it hurts. It’s about a daughter who understands how wicked her father is, yet because of her need for security and affection, craves her father’s approval, knowing it will never come. Beller shows us how an earthly father without love for his child makes it difficult for that child to understand God as a good father. “It seemed impossible to think of Someone Who loved her, Who planned good things for her—hope and a future—and also think of Him as a Father.” She also shows God’s acceptance, forgiveness, and love for people who turn from their wrong ways to follow Him.

All these truths are wrapped up in a beautiful, romantic, and achingly sad story. There is plenty of action and suspense to keep the reader turning those pages to find out what happens next.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“God forgave you the very first time you asked. He doesn't hold your past against you."

“God was with them. He would make a way, even when there seemed no options.”

“Father was as different from Gil as the darkness of the cave from noontime sunshine.”

“I was a possession to him, someone he could use for his advantage.”

If you haven’t had the opportunity to read a book from this author, you are missing out. She has this gift of making readers feel like they have been transported to the setting of the book with skilled precision. It is easy to close your eyes and see the action play out with descriptive words that dance across the pages. I loved this story and could sense that faith would play a big role in the book.

Jess is a young woman who is trying to make a better life for herself and get away from the man her father wants her to marry. Her cry to God is powerful as she says, “ I need help. I need a way out of this darkness. Show me how I can get away for good.” With those words she gives her trust to Him. She is treated like a prisoner by her father who watches her every move. Jess needs to get away and find freedom. If she stays under her father’s power her life will be filled with sadness. Will she find someone to help her?

Gil is out to find his missing brother and uncover who is behind the theft behind his family’s sapphires. I have to say that sapphire is a favorite of mine. Its beauty is stunning and I was happy to learn more about how it is mined. When Gil and Jess encounter each other was it an answer to prayers? What Jess proposes to Gil is surprising but she is so set in getting away from her controlling father that she will do anything.

I loved how Gil was willing to help Jess out but danger soon follows. Deceit, power and greed make this story so intriguing. Finding out that Jess’s dad is behind a robbery of sorts makes Jess very uneasy. Will they be able to see justice served? I couldn’t wait to see how this story ended. Another great story that illustrates how God is in control.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite Genres.. Pretending to be the Mountain Man's Wife by Misty M. Beller is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 6 in the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series. I have really been enjoying this series!

WOW, this book is a very intriguing and touching story about Gil Coulter. Gil is on the hunt to find Samson, his brother that has been missing and hopefully find the missing Family Sapphires. He meets Jess McPharland and upon hearing her story he knows he needs to help her. Jess has been trying to flee from her abusive father for sometime now and she can't seem to flee. I LOVE that Gil has compassion for Jess and agrees to pretend to marry her so that she doesn't have to go through with an arranged marriage. Gil also wants to protect the unborn baby that Jess is pregnant with. Jess is a sweet girl and in no means tries to take advantage of Gil and kind heart, rather she is going to lead him to his missing brother. The pair traveled through caves and tunnels to get to his brother. I LOVE how they had to coax him to leave and then the thief of the jewels was discovered. The book is very descriptive of the happenings, especially when danger lurks for Gil and Jess. I really enjoyed reading about Gil and Jess and how their love for each other grew throughout the story and happenings. The book is action packed and intriguing from the beginning. The story is one of Faith, Friendship, Family and LOVE. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. The book can be read as a standalone, but I HIGHLY suggest reading the series in order and you will come to love the Coulter family as much as I have! Misty M. Beller has written a WONDERFUL series once again! FABULOUS BOOK!

Thrilling historical western!

Gil is searching for both his brother and his family's stolen treasure when he comes across a woman who offers him an interesting proposal: pretend to be her husband and she will take him to his brother. Though he doesn't understand her full situation, Gil feels a protectiveness toward her and agrees.

Jess is desperate to escape her father and the consequences that are coming, and Gil is an answer to a prayer. But as the two seek to find the treasure and convince Gil's brother to escape with them, the danger increases as does the unexpected attraction that grows between them. Now the stakes are even higher for them to get away before their deception is discovered...

What you'll love:
historical western
dual pov
fake marriage
hidden treasure
secret baby
found family
danger and suspense
light faith thread

It has been way too long since I read a historical western romance and I was so excited to pick this one up! The plot was so unique and I loved all the intrigue that kept the pace moving fast. I never knew what to expect next and could not believe the plot twists!

Loved the sweet romance between Gil and Jess. There was some instant attraction but it quickly grew to something deeper and oh, they were so sweet with each other! The forgiveness, the understanding, the kind gestures, the protectiveness - loved it all!

This is the sixth book in the series. I haven't read the others yet but easily read and enjoyed this as a standalone! I am intrigued by the other characters introduced and excited to read their stories some day!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Fake marriage, secret tunnels & danger at every turn!

A beautifully inspirational story that hinges on the importance of remembering that we are all loved and needed, even if our circumstances continuously try to convince us that the world is inherently evil. Jess has been confined to a mining mountain under her father's watchful care, not allowing her to wander too far, and never allowing her to do anything on her own. He's a dangerous man that won't be stopped in his pursuit of riches in the mines. Even if his daughter must suffer.

Gil is looking for his younger brother that took off some time ago and clues are leading him to the same mine where Jess is being held captive. As they find one another in a moment of true blessings, they know there's something larger than themselves that brought them together. Gil is going to help Jess escape her traumatizing home and in turn find his brother who happens to be in the same mine.

After the first few chapters of laying the intensity of Jess' situation, the anxiety is pretty thick all the way through this one. Jess' father is a scary man and his dark presence is always looming in the background and around every corner. I was never quite sure what to expect on each page. But with Gil and Jess having Faith in being led in the right directions, they find the solace that both of them so desperately need.

Inspirational love and heart wrenching suspense has me hooked throughout this book! I love this series and this band of brothers on a Montana ranch raising their families and running into danger around all kinds of bends. But they always have Faith and are always led in the right direction.
