Rupert & Nell: The Chocolate Mountain

Rate this book
Rupert is a Scottish Deerhound and is a bit of a softie. He seems to end up in the water a lot during his adventures but always remains cheerful. His favourite foods are pancakes and chocolate. Nell is a Border Collie and has spent most of her life on the farm helping Mr McTavish. When he retired, Nell went to stay with him in a cottage by the banks of Loch Ness. Now she spends her days going on adventures with Rupert. Wee Nessie is the daughter of the Loch Ness Monster and loves to fly as often as possible. She thinks she has become quite good at it and takes Rupert and Nell on adventures. She hides herself and her passengers from people on the ground by puffing out great clouds of steam. Landings are still a bit problematic but so far they only happen at the end of each flight!Rupert and Nell head off on another adventure with Wee Nessie and find a cave full of chocolate. Unfortunately, getting back home is more of a challenge!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Rupert & Nell The Chocolate Mountain' by Bill Brodie. Illustrated by Rey Flores.

This may be the first book myself, my 12 year old son and 8 year old twins have read by this extremely talented author but it most certainly will not be our last!!!! I am on the tour for all 5 books in this brilliant series so make sure you return on the 15th December to check out my review for Rupert and Nell: Santa’s Secret Helpers, 18th January for Rupert and Nell: The First Adventure, 25th January for Rupert and Nell: The Hot Air Balloon and on the 8th February for Rupert and Nell: Pancake Day. This book is the second book in Bill's 'The Adventures Of Rupert A& Nell' series but they can all be read as standalones and in any order.

Congratulations to Bill Brodie on an absolutely incredible and page turning children's book! Amazon gives this book a reading age of 3 years to 10 years. It is primarily aimed at children but unfortunately at the age of 38 I can no longer be classed as one myself! However, I absolutely loved reading it and think that it is a great short story for young adults and children alike!! My 12 year old son enjoyed reading it and my 8 year old twin boys loved listening to and reading it. I would say children up to the age of 10/11 would enjoy it the most. We read the hardback version and if you are going to grab a copy of this book I would DEFINITELY highly recommend the hardback version as it is just beautiful with a gorgeous cover and stunning illustrations throughout. As I previously mentioned I will be reviewing all 5 books in this series, I have all 5 books in the hardback version and they look absolutely beautiful on my shelf so treat your children to the set. With Christmas around the corner this would make a perfect Christmas gift to any child, especially considering one of the books is Christmas themed!! This is a fantastic book about a Scottish Deerhound called Rupert, a Border Collie called Nell and the daughter of the Loch Ness Monster called Wee Nessie. They decide to go and visit The Chocolate Mountain with Wee Nessie flying them there. however, the Loch Ness has told Wee Nessie not to fly and for good reason as we soon find out in this storyline!! With a storyline packed with fun, friendship, drama, chocolate, stunning illustrations, adventures, flying and so much more what are you waiting for?? Stop reading this and start reading this brilliant book now!! It has everything that a child could want in a magical page turning book plus so much more!! Bill's wonderful and vivid descriptions and evocative writing skills really transports the reader into the book where they will get to see Rupert, Nell and Wee Nessie come to life in front of your eyes, smell and taste the chocolate and have fun. It is ram packed with absolutely stunning, eye catching and colourful illustrations thanks to Rey Flores, with so much to see and discover in each picture. The book is laid out with the storyline on one page and the fantastic illustration relating to that part illustrated on the whole of the opposite page. Malaki, Hunter and Ryder loved pointing out all the different things that they could see in the pictures and discuss what is going on. This truly is a fun, adventurous and fantastic read that children and adults will love getting lost in. We devoured the story in one sitting as we couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next book it has been perfectly laid out with each double page ending on a full stop so you could easily read a few pages at a time too. It would make a perfect bedtime story that will send your children off into dreamland where they will dream of adventures with Rupert, Nell and Nessie. The book is filled with amazing adventures, characters who we loved meeting and stunning illustrations we all loved looking at!!

An absolutely magical, fun, delicious and exciting book for children and grown ups alike!! Stunning descriptions and illustrations, action packed adventure and much more!!

❤️ Overall a fantastically imaginative, fun and immersive adventure book 💜

This book forms part of a great, new series of children's books featuring Rupert and Nell, two of the cutest dogs who live to go on adventures together in the Scottish landscape.

As you know, I'm a little obsessed with Scotland and take any chance to read books that will take me on a journey through the wilderness of this beautiful place.

In this book we meet Wee Nessie again but this time, she takes Rupert and Nell on a flying adventure.

I love the mystery surrounding the Lock Ness Monster and with Wee Nessie still learning, although her flying is great - her landing leaves a lot to be desired.

This is brilliant for all those going to visit Loch Ness and searching for the monster - I expect any low lying cloud or fog will definitely be hiding either Wee Nessie or her mum!

This was a cute story, but was definitely quite a bit too wordy for younger readers to read themselves - however, this makes the perfect series for sharing with your young ones and I could see myself reading these before nap times or before bed every night.

The illustrations are big and bold and I love the character in the animals faces that really draws the eye and prompts discussion.
There's lots to see in each image and really brings the story to life as we read.

These stories remind me of those that my own Dad used to make up for us as kids - I can't wait to see what other adventures this pair gets up to in the next few books.

Thank you to the author and love books tours for our copy, here is our honest review.

I read this with my 6 year old and he really enjoyed it and got into the story. He was laughing at the mishaps and making the rooster noises. As a parent I enjoyed reading this story too, it was full of fun, adventure and friendship. There were also fears, bravery, resilience and consequences from eating too much chocolate and when Wee Nessie arrived home, so they were great talking points for us also. It was a perfect length for a bedtime story and the illustrations were lovely, bright and engaging, they really helped to convey the personalities of Rupert, Nell and Wee Nessie which was great. I am very excited that we'll be back on 18th Dec with our next book, a lovely festive themed adventure with the friends and Santa.

The story sees Rupert being woken early from a delicious dream about chocolate, whilst telling his friends Nell and Wee Nessie they come up with a plan to visit chocolate mountain. The only problem being that Wee Nessie's mum did tell her she wasn't allowed to fly or she may be spotted. This doesn't deter her and they set off on the adventure. A few funny mishaps occur and Wee Nessie finds that she may not be able to fly back quite so easily. Not without Rupert ending up getting wet anyway!

Today my son and I read Rupert and Nell: The Chocolate Mountain by Bill Brodie. This is one of five illustrated books that tell the adventures of Rupert, a Scottish Deerhound, Nell, a Border Collie, and their friend Wee Nessie, the daughter of the Loch Ness Monster.

In the story of the chocolate mountain the trio find a cave full of chocolate. Unfortunately getting back home turns out to be more of a challenge.

I thought the pictures were great for young children as there was lots to look at and plenty of characters to search for. My son enjoyed pointing out all of the characters as they were introduced. The story was really engaging and had some funny moments. He especially liked it when Rupert fell in the pond and when they found the cave of chocolate.

The pages of writing were quite long for a three year old so I found myself reading ahead while he looked at the pictures and then summarising the page for him, which he preferred. I think the books would be perfect for a child who is a little older and has a slightly longer attention span. At bed time when he was asked to choose a story he asked for the Chocolate Mountain story again and wanted to read some of the other books in the series as well, so it was definitely a hit with him and he remembered it from this mornings read.

Firstly, just look at that cover! What child (or adult!) isn’t going to want to pick that up and see what adventure waits inside!!
When you do look inside you are treated to many more wonderful graphics. The pictures fill one side of an open spread and the story on the other. I found this worked really well as my son would be studying the picture, picking out all the different details like the animals and the scenery while I read to him.

He remained engaged throughout the whole book, asking questions and laughing at different things that happened along the way, especially to poor Rupert!! We both really loved all of the characters.

My son is six years old and I found it perfect for him. There wasn’t anything he didn’t understand and as he becomes a more confident reader, it is definitely one he will want to read himself.

My son said ‘The characters are all brilliant and very cheeky, especially flying off when Wee Nessies’s mum had said not too!
I really enjoyed this book, the pictures are awesome and Rupert was so funny!! They were very cheeky to be eating all that chocolate. When can we read the next one?’

So definitely a firm favourite already.

Rupert and Nell: The Chocolate Mountain is part of a 5 book series, and is set in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland, on the banks of the majestic Loch Ness.

The Scottish Highlands are one of my favourite places to visit and I have so many wonderful memories from Summer holidays there, a tradition I now pass on to our three Daughters, so reading this brought back lots of those wonderful memories.

So here we follow Wee Nessie ( the Loch Ness Monster's Daughter ), and her two K9 friends, Rupert and Nell, who decide to go on an adventure to the chocolate mountain to satisfy a craving for it's chocolaty goodness.
Wee Nessie flies there with her friends on her back and they have fun eating the flowing chocolate from the mountain cave and when they've had their fill, the fly back home to the shores of Loch Ness.

So all in all, a brilliant little read that i read with our youngest Daughter and we both really enjoyed.

Like all good children's picture books should, there's lots of beautiful illustrations throughout, which highlight parts of the story, and the text used is a good size, clear and easily readable.

5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from us.

🐾

Rupert & Nell: The Chocolate Mountain is a children’s illustrated book and part of The Adventures of Rupert and Nell series by Bill Brodie, with illustrations by Rey Flores.

It’s a bright and fun adventure that’s perfect for young readers, filled with cute and lively characters. I love Wee Nessie and I’m pretty sure that she is undoubtedly my favourite character. Adding to that the story’s plot is engaging and there are exciting moments that keep children entertained throughout and as someone who’s a big advocate of children reading fun books as bedtime stories, this is the perfect book.

I am so lucky to be able to read and all the books in this series because after this book I am totally in love with Rupert and Nell.

I read this with my 7 year old nephew and we both loved it. It was so engaging and captivating, he loved that the main characters were dogs and that Nessie could hide herself and others by puffing steam, he now wants to go on a Nessie hunt.

The book was so colourful and we spent ages looking at the pictures and talking about the book, it is definitely a series that will get your child talking and excited.

I would highly recommend reading this series, we can't wait to get stuck into the rest

Rupert and Nell: The Chocolate Mountain is a perfect little story for young children. Rupert and Nell are 2 dogs who like to go on adventures with their friend, Wee Nessie, who is the daughter of Nessie AKA The Loch Ness Monster. These 3 mischievous friends had a grand time visiting the chocolate mountain before running into a little trouble, making their adventure a little more adventurous. Not only is the story cute, but so are the illustrations. They were absolutely perfect for the book. All-in-all, this is a sweet little book which kept this adult turning the pages to find out what the friends did next!

I don't have any children but I enjoy reading and reviewing children's books as I love being able to recommend books to my nieces, nephews and god children. I found this book to be funny and full of colour which I feel would attract children straight away. The story is short but I feel this is good to keep children interested, it has a good storyline which is easy to understand and chocolate is always a good theme. Put that together with dogs and a loch Ness monster and it is a winning combination. I am looking forward to seeing what mischief Rupert and Nell get up to in future adventures.

My 9yo (now 10) really enjoyed reading the first part of this series. Rupert and Nell are dogs who are drawn beautifully and their energy flows through the pages.

Wee Nessie brings the Scottish-ness to the book and also the magic! A mountain with chocolate what more can you want!

The lay out, the story and the illustrations make this perfect for children. Either to read together or alone, he can’t wait for the next part!

I like the illustrated pages alongside the text - it’s a perfect bedtime read

As soon as my son discovered these books are about dogs his face lit up. He was very keen to read The Chocolate Mountain, wanting to know how a dragon would fit into the story!

As you can see, he was captivated by the story. After finishing he immediately wanted to read more of the series.

It's an incredibly fun book. There's lots of adventure and each page is colourful, perfectly illustrating the story. The writing is so descriptive. It was a fantastic read for my 10 year old.

This is the first book we have read in the series of five. Friends Rupert, Nell and Wee Nessie fly off on Wee Nessie and discover a cave of chocolate that Rupert has been dreaming of! Set in the beautiful Loch Ness with wonderful coloured illustrations this book will bring a smile to any age of reader. We liked the size of the font used and loved the sense of fun and adventure. We can’t wait to read the next book in the series to see what the trio of friends get up to next.

The characters in this book are simply adorable: a deerhound, a collie and a young Loch Ness Monster!
The trio decide to fly to the chocolate mountain to fill their tummies with chocolate from the chocolate cave. The illustrations are very bright and colourful. Very child friendly and appealing. The only negative would be that for a younger child, the pages of text are too long. I think it would be suitable for a wider audience in pictures book form. Other than that, it’s fantastic.

This is a wonderful heartwarming story that is full of adventure fun and friendship.

The story has them setting off on an adventure to find chocolate despite Wee Nessies mum telling her not to. With her flying skill not so great and Rupert destined to be wet, we had some laughs reading this together

The book was the perfect length for when we read it at bedtime we enjoyed the lovely illustrations along with the story.
