Maxine – “Max the Menace” – is a hired hand who will do almost anything for money. When her need to survive sends her on a quest to deliver pompous Prince August III into his enemy kingdom’s hands, the pair must travel across the continent together. August’s limited worldview has him excited for adventure, while Max struggles to keep the two of them alive. They’re faced with unexpected hurdles of every kind, from dangerous beasts and elven ex-boyfriends to the local inn only having one bed available for the night. With a treacherous journey between Max and her bounty, their fates become ever more intertwined, and revealed secrets push them to work toward a common goal.Content this book contains explicit descriptions of sexual activities, mentions of loss of a family member, as well as depictions of human and mythical creature (“monsters”) death. Other potentially triggering topics include spiders, swearing, weapons/injuries/death threats, and dental… stuff.
This book is the perfect combination of romantic comedy with fantasy! 😍
Beholden follows the story of a young mercenary, Maxine, who will capture or kill anyone for money. However she gets her hands full when her next target ends up being the arrogant and extremely handsome Prince August. Their dialogues are absolutely hilarious!! 😂❤️ He reminds me a bit of Prince Charming from Shrek! Imagine him getting k!dnapped and being forced to travel alongside a grumpy woman who just wants to hand him over to his enemies. A fast paced Romantasy that will have you smiling from ear to ear!! 😍
What to expect: ✨ Romantasy with tons of humor! ✨ Reverse grumpy & sunshine ✨ I came to capture you but fell in love ✨ only one bed ✨ only one horse ✨ elves & dragons ✨ animal companion
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review
Francesca Crispo does it again! An amazing story with such in depth development of the stories, the characters and the adventures they go on. No detail is left untouched and I adore that about her style of writing. Max and August were the perfect example to me of a slow slow burn, and I cannot wait for the second book to come out! The way the two of them handled conflict was great, the banter within the book was incredible as well. I loved seeing such a strong independent female character, I feel like it’s something I truly love in books and Francesca does that so well! Highly highly recommend Beholden to anyone looking for another fantasy series!

“I told you not to look, you big idiot!” I yelled, unable to cast a glance back and show August just how annoyed I was at his continued defiance….“I looked! I looked! Oh s-t, I looked, what the hell is that?” August shouted…
Beholden brings us the story of Maxine, a.k.a. Max the Menace, our villain and hero, and Prince August, a.k.a. Big Idiot, our victim and redeemer. It starts out with our menace abducting the Prince of Barrien, looking to claim a reward for turning him over to the neighboring and warring country of Emynor. Max escorts her captive on a weeks-long journey across Barrien, encountering mysterious and perilous creatures. Their mettle is tested throughout the journey as they face unexpected foes, encounter new allies, and navigate their evolving relationship.
Also, Max has a sassy side-kick named Wraith. She’s a large four legged creature…I mean, horse. She needs her own story after taking a journey with very conceited side character.
You can expect some spice along the way, leading to my most favorite quote ever…“Unravel with me,” I told him…“Only you,” he said. Gah! So perfect!
What I loved most about this book is how perfectly the traumatic backstories of the characters were worked into the journey and adventure of the story. Everything revealed itself at the right time, adding to the intrigue and emotion of both Max and August. Their journey to truth is heartwarming and endearing. I absolutely love Max and August and I can’t stop thinking about them!
Beholden follows the story of Maxine, a skilled mercenary who will capture or kill anyone for the right price. However, her straightforward business approach is put to the test when her latest target turns out to be Prince August—a man who is not only arrogant and naïve but also strikingly handsome. What begins as a routine kidnapping quickly spirals out of control, and Maxine finds herself eager to turn over the exasperating prince and collect her reward. This witty enemies-to-lovers fantasy is full of unexpected twists, with a particularly impressive plot twist that takes the story in a thrilling new direction. Each chapter is rich with adventure, action, and humor, making it difficult to put this book down. The fast-paced narrative and engaging dialogue ensure readers will be thoroughly entertained, often laughing out loud at the clever banter between the characters.
Reading this book might be some of the best time I’ve had reading a book in a while. It was so FUN!
BEHOLDEN follows mercenary Max the Menace who steals Prince August III from his room at the castle to deliver him to the elf kingdom where she’ll collect the reward from the bounty they placed on his head. But the journey is long, so in the meantime Max spends a lot of time with August who, for a good while, sees this as an opportunity for adventure as he waits for his parents to send out rescue parties after him. Between slaying tooth fairies (trust me, they’re NOT like we imagine), surviving monsters and sirens and sharing one bed in an inn, the two draw surprisingly closer.
The banter between Max and August is hilarious and was my favorite thing of the book! They are the complete opposite of each other, which makes them work so well. Seeing that the book gave me some The Witcher vibes—I mean, Max is a mercenary who slays monsters and she even has a good relationship with her horse—the dynamic between Max and August reminded me of a Geralt and Jaskier… if Geralt were a woman and Jaskier a prince, that is. Simply said, these two are the types of characters you want to see together and enjoy the ride as they figure it out themselves.
The adventure aspect of the story, complete with great side characters we meet along the way, was very enjoyable as well. The story wraps up pretty nicely, and since it’s not listed as part of a series I’m assuming it’s a standalone, though I wouldn’t mind seeing more adventures for Max and August!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
I received this book as an arc and I appreciate the author for allowing me the opportunity to read their book early.
I enjoyed the fantasy setting. The peril and fights that the heroine Max has to go through were entertaining and I liked her take no shit attitude. I enjoyed the forced Proximity trope & the plethora of different monsters and obstacles they had to over come.
It gave big dnd vibes where everyone rolls a 1 for best choices. If something was gonna go wrong, it definitely was gonna happen to Max.
While the sexual content was very clearly labeled in the book, and I normally love the spice in books, I was surprised by the language used for descriptors and it unfortunately took me out of the scene. That being said, it does not mean you might not enjoy this book. It just means that the glossy terms used weren't for me.
Overall, I had a good time with this action adventure and I enjoyed getting to see Max break out of her shell and lean on someone besides herself.
One bed? Check One horse? Check Sharing bread and chunks of cheese? Check!
All of these put together really do make the best fantasy book! Once again I have fallen in love with what Francesca Crispo has written and I almost wish this wasn’t a standalone because I could not get enough of Max, August, and of course one of my favorite characters Wraith. In this novel we see Max travel with August (on one horse ;) ) across a continent to turn August in for a bounty. After a very slow burn start we get to see them come out of their shells and literally stick together through thick and thin! This was so refreshing and more lighthearted than Francesca’s Terrafolk series, but I can say I am very much excited for her future work!
I’m all in for an epic journey and this book served that up on a platter! I really loved the gender roles! Max is a badass bitch and can fight just as hard, if not better, than any dude. I like that we learn about max from her actions and not her dialogue. She underestimates herself and sometimes gives in to people talking down to her, like that dick head Florian!
It took me a little bit to get into the story but once it got moving, I was hooked and it kept a great pace. I really wanted to get to know more about August earlier in the book. It was hard to see his motives without a little more back story. I did not know I liked the Stockholm syndrome type trope until this book!
Francesca is really good at one liners! I audibly giggled so many times!
This is a fantasy-meets-romcom mashup that is perfect for readers like me who grew up loving humorous takes on fairytales like The Princess Bride, Ella Enchanted, and Shrek!! I am absolutely obsessed with the dynamic chemistry and banter between Max and August, which made for a super fast-paced unputdownable read.
What to Expect: —Dual POV Chapters —Map & Glossary Guide —Black Cat/Golden Retriever —Grumpy FMC/Sunshine MMC —Action & Adventure —Only One Bed/Horse —Slowburn to Spice
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
As an ARC reader of "Beholden" by Francesca Crispo, I found myself captivated by the adventurous journey of Maxine and Prince August III. Max, also known as "Max the Menace," is a resilient and resourceful character who will stop at nothing to survive. When she is tasked with delivering Prince August III to his enemy kingdom, their journey takes them across the continent, facing unexpected hurdles and challenges at every turn.
What struck me most about this book was the dynamic between Max and August. Despite their differences, they are forced to rely on each other for survival, leading to an unlikely bond that evolves throughout the story. August's naivety and enthusiasm for adventure provide a refreshing contrast to Max's pragmatic and street-smart demeanor, creating an engaging and entertaining dynamic between the two characters.
This book does tackle difficult and potentially triggering topics for some from explicit descriptions of physical activities to mentions of loss and depictions of death, the author does not shy away from exploring the darker aspects of the characters' experiences so if you are planning on reading, please be aware of the story's themes before diving in. Also - there is a chapter that includes some very unique tooth fairies - I'll honestly never think of tooth fairies the same again!
Overall, "Beholden" offers a thrilling and action-packed adventure filled with twists, turns, and unexpected revelations. While it may not be suitable for all audiences due to its content, those who enjoy fast-paced fantasy novels with complex characters and high stakes will find much to enjoy in this book.
For once, the heroine is also the villain. Instead of a naive princess, we have a naive Prince. The interactions between the 2 are both funny and serious. Their chemistry is undeniable. 2 people who thought they knew who they were becoming lightened And started supporting each other.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I REALLY enjoyed this book! It was a fun, quick read, full of some of my favorite fantasy and romance elements. August and Maxine are a chaotic, lovable duo!
I LOVE the reverse damsel-in-distress element. August is indeed a “big idiot,” as Max often calls him. There were so many funny quotes and chaotic scenes, and the fantasy world elements gave me medieval, Dungeons and Dragons-type vibes.
I definitely recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more of what Francesca Crispo has published.
Thank you to Francesca for letting me read the ARC for this book!
This book will take you on a fast paced journey filled with many creatures, knee slapping humor and political/social strife. This book ticked off a lot of boxes for me. The world building was easy to grasp. The MMC gave off Flynn Rider vibes in the best way possible. He was hysterical and his character arc was written so well.
If you want a romantasy book with rom/com humor and Witcher creature hunting vibes, this is the book for you.
Thank you, Francesca, for having me as a part of this ARC Team!
This adult fantasy romance adventure will have you hooked all the way through. There is action, mystery, mythical creatures, fights, a plot twist, what more could we ask for? It is fast-paced, but slow burn! 🔥 Oh, and our our grumpy Female MC is a bad-a**! Reaching the end of this book has me missing the characters and wondering what might happen next. What a fun read!
I want to add that Francesca made it a point to include a wide variety of ARC readers, including those of us with a smaller social media presence. Thank you so much for being inclusive! This was such a fun experience!

Review: I would like to start off by saying thank you to the lovely author for providing me with an ARC for Beholden!! Here's the standard disclaimer that all my thoughts are my own, and all that jazz.
Beholden is a very fun Romantasy that totally checks the boxes for a quest-centric story. We follow Max and August on the road, with Max's wonderful horse companion Wraith. We have a good understanding of the characters and their motivations, and you see a good chunk of personal growth through the book. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book, and would absolutely recommend it!
I enjoyed the character relationships, and how they extended past what we would expect. Max is not only well known for being a mercenary and being good at it, but she knows quite a few people around, too! All of the interactions were fun, and the intrigue was absolutely there.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend this one to y'all.
BEHOLDEN is a fantasy standalone following Max the Menace, a grumpy mercenary who will do just about anything for money, and the sunshine prince she must deliver to his enemies—though the reasons for the bounty on his head aren’t immediately known to us as Max chooses to ignore them to avoid passing judgment on her mission. It reads like an adventure quest, with plenty of fantasy lore and banter so fun it’s hard to put the book down!
Told in dual POV, the story’s biggest strength is undoubtedly the characters, especially Max and August, who are surrounded by a compelling cast of secondary characters we meet along their journey to the elven kingdom. The comparison to The Witcher comes natural given Max’s role and the side-quest nature of some of the hurdles she and Max encounter, complete with monsters to slay and brushes with death, so if I had to compare grumpy/sunshine dynamic between Max and August, the first that comes to mind is that between Geralt and Jaskier. Their banter is that hilarious! I also appreciated how their roles were reversed from what is typically imagined for this type of story. August was given the typically “female” role of the sheltered character with the limited worldview, while Max, a woman, is the tough warrior keeping them alive and doing the monster-slaying.
If you’re looking for a break from long series, Beholden is the perfect palette cleanser read guaranteed to give you a good time while reading.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
What a fun read. Francesca does it again. This book was adventure and intrigue with a mix of spice. I really loved FMC Max, bad ass female mercenary who can not only hang with the big boys but even do them better. Taking on hard jobs to make ends meet to be able to take care of her brother. She uses skills and cunning to deliver on the jobs at hand.
MMC August is her opposite. The usual pompous prince who has never sought the need to leave his castle. Why need to leave when everything is at your fingertips. When Max chooses to take on a bounty to kidnap and deliver Prince Max for a hefty amount of crystals, we get to see just how different these two are... but are they really?
One thing I love about Max is that she doesn't read the reasoning behind why people have bounties on their heads or why they are being sought. She wants to make her own ideas and connections on her terms without previous prejudice or ideas. This also allows her to create a barrier between her and her charge. It's like how I don't like to read the synopsis before I read a book. 😆
Crispo always does an amazing job at bringing not only her characters but also her worlds to life. I can easily find intrigue and wonder in her words that keep me captivated. She does a great job of creating a strong FMC who doesn't look for a MMC who can take care of her, but be her equal. Her strong heroines always find a way to get what they want and kick ass on the way there. Also, the spice is always fun.
This was such a fun read! I was looking forward to reading this book from the moment I learned about it, and it did not disappoint! The characters were so lovable! We follow “Max the Menace”, a determined mercenary, who kidnaps the naive, sheltered playboy Prince August of Barrien for a bounty. Their journey was riddled with sidequests and danger. I really enjoyed learning more about Max and August as they got to know each other, as well as seeing their relationship grow from mercenary and captive, to something more. I love any time characters go on a journey, and it was so exciting to see where the characters would end up next, and what trouble they might get themselves wrapped up in.
I was hooked from the first page, and I finished this book so quickly! The alternating POVs worked so well, I loved seeing Max and August’s differing views on each situation. The humor was such a highlight of this book, and it showcased Max and August’s relationship brilliantly. Wraith was the perfect equine companion for Max; in demeanor, as well as physique! Who wouldn’t want a beautiful horse with an attitude in as their loyal companion? Side note, I loved the chapter titles! This is a standalone, but I would never say no to more Max, August, and Wraith!
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, light book filled with fantasy, humor, adventure, and spice!
This book starts with Max who is a mercenary who kidnaps the prince named August and she is to deliver him to another kingdom for a large sum of crystals. Max is an absolute grump but she believes in putting her family ahead of everything else.
When she meets August she does start to become a slightly different person. She's really starting to second guess and question some things.
August is an absolute party boy Prince and all of the stereotypes that go along with it. I did really enjoy the character development that you see from August throughout the book.
I will say that this book had some truly frightening scenes and some really creepy moments. But there are some warnings about that at the beginning of the book which a greatly appreciated.
I did find myself laughing as well as cringing and freaking out throughout this book so that was delightful. If you are at all of fan of fantasy romance, great world building and impressive character development, I would recommend checking out this book.
Thank you so much to Francesca for allowing me to read the ark of this book. It was truly a delight.
The first word that comes to my mind to describe this book is FUN. This was a quick read, action-packed, entertaining fantasy and I loved it! Max is a wonderful heroine - she is tough, she is fearless, and she will do what it takes to care for her younger brother. Max has become a fearsome mercenary despite her small stature and her latest target - the prince of Barrien, August. August is a total oaf - he is goofy, he is pretty naive, and he is, of course, strikingly handsome. Max and August form an unlikely bound on their trek across the continent, facing monsters, mermaids, and other attacks. Slowly but surely, Max’s annoyance towards August melts away and she finds that the prince may have more to him. Once they arrive at their destination, August is disgusted by the atrocities committed in his name. The pair race back to Barrien to set the wrongs right - and maybe find happily ever after? What an exciting fantasy - oh and don’t worry, there’s a good amount of spice between these two, too!
I received Beholden as an ARC from Francesca Crispo, thank you Francesca, in exchange for this review. (I don’t think this is spoiler-y but might be a little)
I enjoyed this book! I haven’t really read many reverse grumpy/sunshine type of books but I really enjoyed August and Max’s dynamic in this!
Max was kind of grouchy but hardened because she sort of has to be. She’s a badass strong female character and it totally worked. I loved how she stayed strong and committed to her mission for her brother.
August was a bit goofy and so committed to being like a carefree easy going kind of guy. But once he starts feeling, he feels HARD and I love that.
Starting this book I didn’t really know what to expect but 3/4 of the way in I was fully invested and wanting to know how this book was going to end. I thought it was a standalone but now I’m hoping there will be a book 2!
It was definitely a slow burn and built up to the spice but it wasn’t TOO spicy.
I got the chance to read this as an ARC (thank you Francesca !!) and y’all I ate. this. up!! This gave me the vibes of a fantasy rpg mixed with a slow burn love story. It had me giggling and gasping, and wondering, how many times can we end up with “only one bed” before something finally happens between these two? The answer may surprise you.
You start the book off having no clue as to why Max the Menace is even taking August captive, beyond the 20,000 crystal payout she’s expecting. I love the mysterious aspect this brings and the little bread crumbs Francesca leaves throughout the story are so perfect. The chapter titles are a nice touch to tease at what’s coming next.
The banter was great, I loved the grumpy / sunshine, black cat / golden retriever, scary assassin / big idiot prince dynamic these two had, and overall really enjoyed the world that the author crafted for this story. If you’re looking for your next Romantasy read with some good 🌶️y moments, look no further!
“the way he spoke to me, as if it was the first time he’d cared so much about the other person in the interaction, I finally felt like I was being taken care of by someone other than myself.”
Slow burn, enemies to lovers, elves, kingdoms, royalty, mercenaries, tooth fairy’s , mermaids, I loved this book and enjoyed all the action and trials they faced. August is so witty, kind, big heart, Max is the strong independent woman that deserved to be loved fiercely. The side characters are all well written and not just there. Florian for example was my favorite side character and honestly if I wasn’t a fan of August I’d be team Florian 100%. I love the growth of both the main characters they were developed so beautifully, they didn’t just go through all the trauma and stayed the same, they grew with every new problem. I absolutely loved the protectiveness they both had for one another before they even realized their feelings for one another. Just loved this book.
Beholden by Francesca Crispo is a fun enemies to lovers fantasy read with great charectars. The main female charecter Max is one of my favorites I have read this year. She is remarkable as a strong female who is not naive but a growing leader of her family and as a mercenary.
Yet the main male charectar August is a Prince who is naive to the world around him. His ignorance to his position and its effect on the world around him made the romantic relationship between the two unique. Usually authors shy away from a naive male charectar.
The world of Beholden was also well written and distinct. Max and August journeyed together learning about each other while fighting tooth fairies and other fable charectars. Thier bantor was witty and part of thier relationship I enjoyed.
Overall Beholden is a fun read that touched on various adult topics with care. I recieved an ARC for a review.
This book was gooooood!! I loved the characters banter and I’ve never read a book before were the trope is captor-captee (I don’t know if that’s the right word) but I’m definitely going to be reading more.
I loved that it was pretty fast paced but also not rushed and that their story still got to develop in the best way. I also liked the adventure aspect and the many different obstacles they faced especially since August (MMC) had been so sheltered.
I do feel like there could’ve been a little more chemistry between them but that might just be me wanting the book to be longer lol. (Book 2????)
Overall I loved this book and I think it’s definitely a quick and interesting read. I’d say it’s perfect to get you out of a reading slump!
I really appreciate getting the opportunity to read this book and hopefully more from this author!! 💞💞
I liked this book. It is the world that the author built that kept me reading and interested. All of the various monsters that Max and August encountered along the way were definitely ones to way out for. This is what made the book for me. I have to be honest that I was not really that attached to Max or August or any of the other characters. Try as I may, I just never could become emotionally attached.
The romance between Max and August is a enemies to lovers but running cold to hot. They share some moments together but then in the next breath they are back to bickering with each other. Neither one wants to really admit that they like each other more than they do.
Overall, while this book was just ok for me, I would try another book by this author as I do like their storytelling.
Thank you Francesca for sending me an ARC I had been looking forward to this book for months!
Beholden is a 18+ Romantasy book that begins with a mercenary named Max (Maxine) who has to kidnap the Barrien Prince named August. Her mission is to deliver him to the Emynor kingdom for a large sum of crystals. The world building for this book painted a really descriptive picture and I felt like I could imagine everything that was happening. The book is written in first person POV from both Max and August’s POV which was so fun to read the internal dialogue of both characters.
Max is a badass and a bit grumpy at times. She puts family above everything and doesn’t ask questions when it comes to her work. However once she meets August, she notices her feelings change.
August is a party boy bachelor and ultimate golden retriever. I really enjoyed him as a character because you see such a big character development.
There’s a warning at the beginning about some content such as spiders which I really appreciate that Francesca adds content warnings. But it made for such interesting and terrifying plot points. Francesca created such noteworthy creatures in this book including a miniature dragon. Honestly I need a pocket sized dragon now 🥰
The humor in this book was really funny and quirky. The plot and romance aspect had me hooked and there were a couple open door romance scenes. I really loved the dynamic of the two characters and the great story. Definitely check this one out!! ❤️
Overall, I really enjoyed the story line to this book, but I ended up DNF'ing at about 40%, simply because it isn't just the right read for me at the moment. I hope to come back to it later and will update my review when I do!
Now, if you're looking for a grumpy/sunshine, short read, this could be a great option for you! Francesca does a great job explaining details in her world building, especially with smaller details that some authors miss in their writing IMO.
It is definitely and indie book, and could use a smidge more editing. While the author does great explaining the small concepts, there can be some overexplanations that could be shortened and more digestible.
Regardless, it has the potential to be an AMAZING 5 star read, and I'm sure for many it could be!
This book was a wild ride from start to finish! Max is the kind of tough, no-nonsense heroine I live for, and watching her drag Prince August (aka “most likely to get eaten by a beast in chapter one”) through a perilous continent had me laughing, gasping, and flipping pages like till 4am! I’m not exaggerating.
Enemies, elven drama, tension-filled travel… and yes, there’s only one bed.
If you love reluctant partnerships, morally gray chaos, and fantasy with a sharp edge—this one’s calling your name.
What starts as survival slowly becomes something more: a fragile trust, buried truths, and a connection neither of them expected. The writing is sharp, the world immersive, and the character work? Beautifully layered.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers so here we go!
Beholden starts off with some action and keeps that going throughout the book which I loved! Max is the badass, mercenary FMC who has taken our entitled prince MMC, August, for a hefty bounty. They hit several bumps in the road along their long journey but the character development along the way was wonderful. There were some twists that I kind of suspected but was still pleasantly surprised when they came out. 😊 I would love to see what’s in store for these characters in the future!
On a side note, I also love that this is a local author as I live in the Seattle area as well.
