“The world did not take kindly to mortals who thought themselves worthy of gods.”
The Dark Mirror is the fifth installment in this paranormal dystopian seven-book series. At this point, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to review these books while remaining as vague as possible about the previous ones, so while I’ll avoid spoilers, I will mention the starting point of this fifth installment, as well as the new locations visited.
Six months have passed since the final events of The Mask Falling—a book I still can’t believe was published four years ago—and Paige finds herself in Warclow with no memory of what happened in all that time. But familiar faces soon appear to help her catch up on the latest developments regarding Scion, the Mime Order, and the Domino Programme. As Paige tries to piece together Scion’s plans and avoid capture, clues will lead her to cities in the free world like Prague, Venice, and Rome.
I feel pretty confident in saying that this is probably my new favorite book in the series so far. Even though there have been moments throughout these books when I’ve wanted to shake Paige, I love the development her character has had, especially in this fifth installment, where it’s obvious she’s learned her lesson after the repercussions some of her past decisions had. And obviously, I still love reading about her interpersonal relationships with other characters—her friendship with Nick and Maria, the convoluted relationship with the toxic person she saw for years as a father figure, the bonds she continues to form with her allies, and of course, her beautiful romance with Arcturus.
I think this book strikes the best balance between plot, action, and romance, dedicating enough time to each of them. I still want more scenes with the Ranthen, and I have to say I’m not entirely convinced by the influence the Council of Kassandra plays in a certain final decision, but overall, I really enjoyed this book. I can’t wait to see what the final two books will bring.
