Gordon Darroch moved to The Hague in April 2014 with his Dutch wife, Magteld, who was terminally ill with cancer. Since her death seven weeks later he has been raising their two sons alone. All three of them are autistic; Gordon was diagnosed in February 2018 at the age of 43.

Previously he lived for 13 years in Glasgow and studied English Literature and German in Edinburgh. Although he was born and raised in Norwich he considers himself a Scottish writer by virtue of his heritage, education and the fact that English people can't pronounce his surname.

He has worked as a journalist for the Press Association, The Herald and Scottish Television – though mercifully for the viewing public, he never ventured beyond the online news department. He has covered numerous High Court trials, the death of Donald Dewar and the Clutha helicopter disaster in Glasgow in 2013. He currently co-hosts the DutchNews podcast where he does his damnedest to untangle a political scene with 15 different parties.

He speaks English, Dutch and German, and has also learned French, Italian and Romanian with varying degrees of success. In his spare time he enjoys reading, running and pottering around on his bicycle.
