Rate this book
In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving world, maintaining focus and clarity in our personal and professional lives is more challenging than ever. But the problem is often not the rate of change—it’s the mindset with which we face the change.

In The Reset Mindset, productivity expert Penny Zenker (aka The Focusologist) draws on more than two decades of experience founding, running, and scaling multimillion-dollar organizations to reveal a proven method that not only ensures that you never get “stuck” again but can also unlock new levels of performance personally and collectively.

Regardless of your job title or situation, the simple three-step Reset Practice—1: Step Back; 2: Get Perspective; 3: Realign—will help you adapt quickly, reduce complexity, simplify decision-making, and keep you focused on the right things so you can achieve your work, relationship, and leadership goals.

It all starts with a Reset Moment.

2.5/5 The theme and a few suggestions are great; but, there aren't great examples. Examples are how we learn. The book has a lot of theory. This book didn't work for me. My thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

The Reset Mindset: Get Unstuck, Focus on What Matters Most, and Reach Your Goals Faster by Penny Zenker is a practical, insightful, and highly relevant guide for navigating the increasing complexity and constant change of modern life and work. Rather than focusing solely on productivity techniques, the book explores the mindset shifts necessary to regain clarity, reduce overwhelm, and move forward with greater purpose and effectiveness.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its simplicity and accessibility. Penny Zenker presents a framework that feels immediately applicable without oversimplifying the challenges people face in high-pressure personal and professional environments. The three step Reset Practice Step Back, Get Perspective, and Realign provides a clear structure that readers can repeatedly apply to decision-making, focus, leadership, and personal growth.

What stands out most is the emphasis on perspective. The book recognizes that many people do not struggle because they lack ability or ambition, but because they become mentally trapped by stress, distraction, overcommitment, or reactive thinking. By encouraging readers to pause and reassess before moving forward, the book promotes a more intentional and strategic way of operating.

Another major strength is the practical tone throughout the book. The concepts are grounded in real-world experience and communicated in a way that feels encouraging rather than overwhelming. Zenker’s background building and scaling organizations adds credibility to the advice while keeping the material connected to real leadership and productivity challenges.

The discussion surrounding focus and complexity is especially timely. In an environment where constant information, interruptions, and competing priorities can easily lead to burnout and decision fatigue, the book offers useful strategies for simplifying thought processes and redirecting energy toward what truly matters.

The book also succeeds in balancing personal development with professional application. While many of the lessons apply directly to leadership, business, and performance, the broader message about clarity, alignment, and intentional living gives the book relevance far beyond the workplace.

Another particularly effective aspect is the idea of the “Reset Moment.” This concept reinforces the idea that transformation does not always require dramatic life changes, but can begin through small moments of awareness, recalibration, and conscious decision making. That framing makes the process feel achievable and sustainable.

At its core, The Reset Mindset is a valuable guide for individuals seeking greater clarity, focus, resilience, and momentum in a fast moving world. It offers practical tools and mindset shifts that can help readers break out of unproductive cycles, simplify complexity, and move toward their goals with greater confidence and intention.

3.5⭐️Overall, this was a great book. I took away a lot of new knowledge. This was a group reading assignment for my job. Last years was Emotional Intelligence 2.0, this year it’s The Reset Mindeset.

I gave it a 3.5 because it felt at times so simple. I’m more of a shove the statistics down my throat, but this was very laid back and spread out throughout the book with minimal information. I guess less is more, but I’m not a huge fan of it along with story telling. I know you learn through experience and background is necessary to explain the knowledge-It’s just not my cup of tea right now.

Below, are my favorite quotes/take aways from this study.

“Step back, get perspective, realign.”

“Under the right context, Why? Can be a powerful connection to something greater.”

“We have no control over what time we have, we have complete control over what we choose to focus on.”

“But evolutionarily speaking, the need for control is ultimately just about our core human needs for stability, comfort, and reassurance.”

“Exercise curiosity rather than reacting defensively.”

“The past no longer exists. The future hasn’t happened yet. There is only ever the present.”

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. The power to choose our response is in that space. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

“Reactions are instinctive and impulsive. They happen prior to thought. But a response requires intentional thought.”

“Responding is an intentional and controlled way of handling a situation.”

“When we can no longer change the situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

“Lessons are found in reflection.”

“Creativity, innovation, and cooperation all accelerate when leaders show a willingness to listen and engage.”

“You don’t have to agree with their point of view as long as you understand it.”

“The emphasis on reflection, being present, and accepting situations without judgement grounds us and diverts our energies away from negative stressors and counterproductive, reactive states of being.”

“Challenge assumptions.”

“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely.”

The Reset Mindset is a highly practical and timely guide for anyone struggling to stay focused and effective in an increasingly complex world. Penny Zenker presents a refreshingly simple yet powerful framework that helps readers overcome obstacles, improve decision-making, and regain control of their personal and professional lives.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its emphasis on mindset as the foundation for meaningful change. Rather than treating productivity challenges as purely organizational problems, Zenker explores how our thinking patterns influence our ability to adapt, prioritize, and move forward. This perspective makes the book relevant not only for workplace performance but also for leadership, relationships, and personal growth.

The three-step Reset Practice—Step Back, Get Perspective, and Realign—is both memorable and actionable. Readers are given a straightforward process they can apply immediately when faced with uncertainty, stress, or competing priorities. The simplicity of the framework makes it easy to implement while offering significant potential for long-term impact.

Zenker’s extensive experience as an entrepreneur, business leader, and productivity expert adds credibility to the advice. The lessons feel grounded in real-world challenges rather than abstract theory, making the book especially valuable for professionals seeking practical solutions.

For leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, and anyone looking to break through stagnation and achieve their goals more effectively, The Reset Mindset offers a powerful roadmap for creating greater clarity, focus, and forward momentum.

The Reset Mindset: Get Unstuck, Focus on What Matters Most, and Reach Your Goals Faster is a practical and mindset-focused guide that addresses the challenge of maintaining clarity, focus, and momentum in an increasingly fast-paced and distracted world.

What stands out most is the book’s emphasis on mindset as the core driver behind productivity and adaptability. Rather than treating overwhelm as purely a time-management issue, the book explores how perspective, mental framing, and intentional decision-making shape performance and progress.

The three-step Reset Practice Step Back, Get Perspective, and Realign—provides a simple but structured framework that feels accessible and applicable across both professional and personal situations. The clarity of the model makes the concepts easy to retain and implement.

One of the stronger aspects of the book is its focus on reducing complexity. Instead of promoting constant hustle or over-optimization, it encourages readers to pause, reassess, and reconnect with priorities before moving forward. This creates a more sustainable and strategic approach to productivity.

The author’s background in leadership and business development also adds credibility to the practical side of the guidance. The lessons feel rooted in real-world experience rather than abstract motivational theory.

Overall, this is a clear, actionable, and reflective read for professionals, leaders, and individuals looking to improve focus, decision-making, and personal effectiveness through a more intentional mindset framework.

As a former gamer, The Reset Mindset totally clicked with me. Penny Zenker’s approach is like hitting the "reset" button in a game—it's all about wiping the slate clean and jumping back into the action with a fresh perspective. It’s perfect for those moments when you're stuck in a loop or can’t level up the way you want.

The way she breaks down dynamic reassessment reminded me of how we constantly analyze and adjust our strategies in games, adapting to new challenges without the stress of failure. Zenker’s strategies help you bounce back quickly, so instead of getting frustrated, you just reset, rethink, and go harder next time. It’s like boosting your respawn mentality in real life!

Her approach to dynamic reassessment is spot-on for anyone dealing with fast-paced environments, where staying flexible and adapting is key. Instead of getting bogged down by setbacks, you learn to pause, assess, and jump back in with a clearer focus. It’s a solid read for anyone looking to reduce stress and keep moving forward, especially in fields like IT where things are constantly evolving.

As an administrator constantly juggling other people's priorities, The Reset Mindset felt like a breath of fresh air. My days are filled with managing tasks and deadlines for everyone else, leaving little time for myself. Reset Moments are just what I need to give myself space for. The book teaches you how to take a step back, reset your focus, and regain control, even in the chaos. This method of dynamic reassessment helped me see that it's possible to reset quickly, without feeling guilty, and approach challenges with a clear mind. It’s a practical guide for anyone who feels overwhelmed by other people's needs and is looking for a way to stay grounded and find balance.

Viktor Frankl's profound insights on choosing our responses to life's challenges find a worthy successor in Penny Zenker's work. Zenker illuminates the critical importance of that brief, powerful moment between stimulus and response. A mental "reset" of our "mindset" allows us to choose action over fear, kindness over insult, and thoughtfulness over impulse. Zenker provides practical strategies to cultivate this essential skill, offering readers a transformative approach to navigating life's complexities with courage, grace, and wisdom.

This book had no original thoughts and was an aggregate of famous thinkers, philosophers, and business people. It is overly simplistic neo Buddhism and I would not recommend anyone to read it.

As a subjective opinion, I'm not so sure about my own opinion on this book.
Simple, practical, but still can describe what is missing from this book.

good reminders about pausing, progress not perfection, focusing on what's available here & now, and finding mutual beneficial outcomes (always resetting in various ways along the way).
