This is a romance? Are you serious?
I knew there was gonna be a third act break up so I skipped ahead ( sue me) to see if the ending was gonna’ be good enough for me to bother reading it.

Turns out, after the break up Patrick is upset missing Dane and Dane? He’s literally lusting, getting rock hard, wanting to have sex with so many guys. His new co-worker, he can’t stop thinking about his ass and how horny he makes him. He sees Patrick at the coffee shop, at this point it’s been over 5 weeks and he thinks he looks good but not as good and amazing as his ex ? Which he also runs into at the coffee shop and of course this guy is the most beautiful guy to ever exist to him right next to his new coworker. A guy at the gym? He’s SO HORNY for him he follows the guy into the sauna while the guy is touching himself. I’m fully convinced he’s about to go have sex with this guy but then FINALLY he remembers his time with Patrick and he gets confused and leaves the gym.

THIS SHIT AT 80%????? Unacceptable, that’s shit that can be moved on from earlier on in a story.. at 80? I’m supposed to be cheering on for Dane to stop lusting after every single other guy he sees to finally appreciate Patrick? Ya, no thanks. Fuck that guy. 😤

I officially stopped at 88%
5 months without seeing each other, everyone telling Dane that Patrick didn’t do anything wrong and Dane just continuing to imagine himself fucking other guys and lusting after his coworker. And Patrick showing up to Dane’s game ? Patrick have some self respect D:<

The one star is how pissed I was after reading just a few chapters of this bull crap I can’t imagine how much more upset I would’ve been had I not skipped ahead to see what was gonna’ happen.

Well, this was awful and I want to go back to being the person I was before this book. It had no right to be 500 pages long, like seriously, 300 would have been more than enough.

Dane was insufferable. One of the worst MCs I've ever encountered, a complete idiot and asshole. The amount of times he commented/though that Patrick is not "his type" and looks like a toothpick is insane. Dude, just don't go after him if you dislike his looks that much, no need to mention it every single time you see the man. Also, the part that pissed me off the most was the break-up and Dane's behaviour after it. Firstly, he barely ever thought of Patrick after like a week of breaking up and started ogling other men and getting boners every single day. The gym chapter, in which he got a boner and worked out proudly with it while moaning like a pornstar, then walking through the gym with a huge tent in his pants got me dead. In a bad way. And then out of nowhere he remembers Patrick? What even.

Patrick was the dumb clumsy nerd guy. To be a klutz is normal, to trip, stutter, spill stuff, drop utensills, choke on words all in one scene is wild. Especially if he never does it again and is presented as a confident man. After his big expose article came out he was shocked that Dane was pissed? Seriously? In one scene he is scared that Dane will break up with him because he's writing the article in secret, in next he expects Dane to message him that he missed him and is shocked that the man is annoyed? Nothing felt consistent in this book, MC's thoughts kept on changing every single chapter.

The plot was rather weak, sometimes had weird creative decisions and besides the sexual attraction, there was nothing between the MCs. They had one or two real talks and just fucked the other time, so where did the love come from? The ending chapters (after they got back together) got me banging my head against the table. Walker family is fucked up. The sexual jokes from Dane's twin about them all fucking, including Dane's mom were awful and very uncomfortable. Overall, the humor in this book wasn't funny at all, very tone deaf and would never fly in real life.

(Un)Honorable mentions: 1) I feel like the author has a jaw fetish by the amount of times they're mentioned (right next to most guys in the book looking like gods with six packs) 2) comparing dick size to a kid's arm should be illegal 3) Giving a remark "A well-fucked baby" after a person tells you he slept like a baby is the absolute worst thing I've read in a while.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.

Fighting the flames within is the fist book of the Heartstrings of honor series.

I have to say that I enjoyed the book so much, the characters are amazing and there is a mystery plot that adds a different touch to the book.

Patrick is a journalist who is looking for his chance at the newspaper where he works. In one of those searches, he meets Dane, an attractive firefighter who is attracted to Patrick even though he is not her type, or so he says.

Patrick's boss commissions him to do an article on the daily life of firefighters, so he turns to Dane to do his article. After three dates, full of romance and passion, they continue to deny the love relationship, even though it's obvious to everyone.

Patrick is intelligent, charmingly awkward, a bit of a nerd who can't quite believe that someone like Dane is attracted to him.

Dane is loyal, funny and charming.

I have to highlight the secondary characters, both the co-workers and Dane's family, especially his siblings.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

5 Glittering Stars - For Every Chapter

Wow, if the next book in the Heartstrings of Honour series is anywhere near as good as ‘Fighting the Flames Within’ I need to prepare myself for another rollercoaster ride. What a gorgeous pair of MC’s these two guys are, the Firefighter Dane who is built like ‘ The Rock’ and the Rookie Reporter Patrick, a real ‘Clarke Kent’ if ever there was one, with his heavy, dark framed glasses, but with a stick like body compared to Dane Walker. That Cover Model is enough to have copies of this book flying off the shelves, it surely has to be Dane.

At their first meeting at the scene of an accident they were ‘into each other’ next day they literally were. Dane invited Patrick to Dinner and he hardly got indoors before Dane had wrapped him in his arms. Next they went on a bowling date. 😍🔥💥

Some days later, Patrick’s boss assigned him to do a piece on the local Fire Station, Patrick was delighted to get such a such a task, it was way up the ladder compared to to his previous jobs. So he had to find a way in and contacted Dane to ask the name of the Station Head.

Having gained access from the Boss and, Patrick was on an accepted person around the station, enjoying the friendly banter and sarcasm for the rest of the crew. Wanting to impress his Editor, Patrick did an excellent job in impressing him but unfortunately his diligence opened a Pandora’s Box and in so doing he destroyed whatever it was that was growing between him and Dane.

Dane had been recovering from a breakup with a long time partner who had just walked out without an explanation. Just when he started to trust again with Patrick it all collapsed. Dane is not a forgiving man.

It was heartbreaking reading the text messages he sent to Patrick telling him to get lost, but in much harsher words. 😱😭😖🤬.

When the truth in Patrick’s written article is uncovered Dane is still hurting and unforgiving. Patrick too is struggling but he’s achieved more success in his job as a Reporter. It is Patrick who inadvertently brings them nearly face to face again and left the door open for Dane to take the next step if he wants to. Then wait and see clumsy Patrick turn the tables on tough guy Dane. 🔥💥
*****************************

Apart from the adorable but clumsy Reporter and the gorgeous Firefighter, there are two other Walker brothers that are younger than Dane. These two are also gems, especially Grady the youngest and their hilarious Mom is the best ever to her boys. The Crew at the Fire station add a whole lot of spark and fun in the background to Dane and Patrick’s saga.

Of course all accolades has to go to Casey Morales for his wonderful character building and story telling skills and he does it with so much humour and charm too, no holding back on all the hilarious innuendos, the steamy feels and the wonderful banter between all the characters. Loved them all, and I was laughing out loud at some of them.

Don’t miss out on the chance of a terrific read which is available on KU in a few days. I’m looking forward to the next in this ‘Honourable Heartstrings’ series and wonder which professional service givers will be tugging at OUR heartstrings next.

I received a free ARC copy from the author and this is my voluntarily given honest review.

DNF. To call this book a shitty piece of literature would be me being nice. This HAD the potential to be a really cute and happy book, but missed that mark by a mile. Dane was the most insufferable gay gym bro stereotype that I have ever read about in my entire life. I mean, the amount of time in the less than half I read of this book, he mentioned SO many times how Patrick just didn’t look like the guys he normally goes after. My GOD. Patrick, I mean, god bless him. He felt like a cartoon character. Idk how to explain it. I DNF’d this at 44% and I’m so glad I did after reading spoilers in the comments. Jesus H. Who writes stuff like that??

DNF. Patrick, babe, love yourself jfc. Dane literally thought about fucking other men several times during your “break up” and was 🤏🏼 close to following through with fucking his ex until you happened to show up at the same coffee shop. He also could not stop describing how plain ya were compared to the men he usually fucks. ICK TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE. A close second to the author using AI for the covers 🥴 hard hard hard pass

Casey Morales is no stranger to crafting engaging contemporary romances with wit and depth, and Fighting the Flames Within is no exception. Diving into this nearly 500-page slow-burn lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers second-chance romance, I found myself completely engrossed. While some might consider the page count hefty for a contemporary romance, the depth and scope of this story fully justify it.

The tale of news reporter Patrick and firefighter Dane is more than just a romance—it’s a journey of values, resilience, and rediscovery. Morales expertly develops their love story from their first meeting to their painful breakup and eventual reunion, with each stage handled authentically and in alignment with the characters’ truths. The gradual unfolding of their relationship feels relatable and deeply human, striking an emotional chord that lingers.

What truly sets this book apart is its intricate detail and realism. The portrayal of life in a fire station, the nuances of investigative journalism, and even the simple joys of playing softball are depicted with such care that you feel fully immersed in Patrick and Dane’s world. Patrick’s unwavering commitment to his principles—knowing his investigation could jeopardize his budding relationship with Dane—adds a layer of moral complexity rarely seen in romance. It’s refreshing to see a protagonist who refuses to compromise his values, reminding us why the book is aptly titled Fighting the Flames Within.

The themes of balancing personal desires with doing the right thing resonate powerfully throughout the story. The novel delivers a poignant message: staying true to oneself, even in the face of loss, can lead to the redemption and second chances we seek.

Despite its slow-burn pacing, the romance doesn’t shy away from passion. The balance between sizzling chemistry and gradual emotional connection is beautifully maintained, ensuring a satisfying experience for all types of romance readers.

Fighting the Flames Within seamlessly blends a captivating medical drug investigation, the adrenaline-filled life of a firefighter, and heartfelt personal struggles. It’s easily one of my favorite reads this year, and I highly recommend it to fans of contemporary romance, particularly those who appreciate slow-burn love stories with a message.

I totally enjoyed this one as Dane, the hot fireman plays with the reporter Patrick like a cat with a mouse. Nerdy Patrick is in over his head with a hunky man like Dane and he is well aware of it. Their 3 dates are hot and steamy and it's heading towards true love forever when Patrick breaks Dane's trust, or so he believes. Dane is blazing hot and funny, loyal and charming, surly and charismatic all rolled into a centerfold. Patrick is intelligent, a mini dynamo who is utterly adorable and earnest. These two are as perfectly matched as two can be and I loved Dane's family and coworkers - Patrick's not that much. Casey always writes outstanding books, and I mean outstanding but this one is in a class by itself - humorous, heartwarming and stunning. I just wanted to keep reading, my heart didn't want to let it go. I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

3.5 stars. This author has an amazing range of story types, this writing was just as good but turned out not to be a story for me. All the characters had a lot of rather immature banter and many innuendos, which is fine but just not something I enjoy. The basic storyline about the results of the article was very good. I didn't have any issues with MCs looking at how physically appealing others are, I don't think people need to be blind to all but their partner.

The blurb sounds good, and it's the type of story that I like to read, but when I started this book and found out that it has 500ish pages, I gave up.

When I tried to read a new book, if it was too slow or had too many pages but the blurb sounded interesting, I jumped from the first chapter to the middle chapter, then to the epilogue, and didn't write reviews about it, but this book was different. Yeah, I found this story boring, too slow, and too many pages, but Dane's character was the only thing that made me want to write reviews about him, especially.

What I gathered from the lines I read was that Dane and Patrick only dated a few times, and they weren't even boyfriends, so when Dane learned about Patrick, who wrote an article about his fellow firefighter, Alex, who was arrested, Dane was furious. He didn't want to see Patrick ever again. So Dane was free to ogle another man, but to actually read it, it was kind of annoying and left a bad taste in me. It wasn't a one-time thing; it happened several times with different men—three men, to be precise. First man with someone he had been hooked up with before. That was just flirting on the other man's side, and Dane got a boner, so he must be feeling the sexual tension between them again. The second man was Dane's new fellow firefighter, who was hotter than the sun. Dane always talked dreamy about how ungodly his looks were and how great his body was. I felt like Dane was thinking of banging him, but too bad they were coworkers and he was an asshole. The third and last were the worst. Dane was daydreaming of fucking a new guy at a gym he frequented, and the author wrote details about how Dane liked to fuck him, so eww. He got a boner, went to the locker room, and voila, the new guy was there too, naked and more than willing, but Dane's mind was switched to Patrick, and he just bolted out of there. As it turned out, Dane still thinks about Patrick.

Dane's character was a deal-breaker and a major turn-off; he had wandering eyes and lustful thoughts on his mind, and it made me think twice about whether I'm going to read a book by this author.

Actual rating 3.5 stars. This was an enjoyable read. I appreciated that there was a little bit of drama/intrigue in the story and that it was well woven in with the romance. It’s fun to read a book knowing it will have an HEA and seeing how they untangle themselves from the drama to work it all out. Not my favourite from this author but an enjoyable read (and who wouldn’t want to read about hunky firefighters??)

SWEET AND FUNNY WITH STEAM!💕

I enjoy all of the authors work and this start of the contemporary romance series Heartstrings of Honor was a hit out of the ballpark!

I loved the engaging storyline with the wonderful main characters and all the side characters that made the story interesting and fun!

Dane Walker came across at first as a shallow character always going for the bulky model gym rats and thinking about his sexy ex but when he meets the thin, shy, cute sometimes awkward young reporter Patrick Pierce at an accident scene he starts realigning his thoughts on his usual type…

We then see Dane as a complex character with many layers that Patrick discovers and brings out of this sweet teddybear!

Patrick was a character that showed growth regarding his shyness and insecurities throughout his dates and interactions with the sexy, dominant, stoic fire fighter Dane and also showed he was a dark horse when it came to his sexual prowess as both Dane and Patrick ignites a spark in each other that causes a backdraft that can’t be contained!

A misunderstanding regarding a news article causes trust to be broken but hopefully the flames can be ignited again when they get support from Danes team and Patrick’s best friend ….

I love the station house family and soft ball family with all their teasing and camaraderie!
Danes family was funny and supportive!

A beautiful tear jerker of an ending so have the tissues ready…

I look forward to a certain flirty, flamboyant nurse next!

I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest non biased review.

I adore all of Casey’s contemporary books, and this is no exception. The interactions between Patrick and Dane were so entertaining (for the most part), Patrick gets so flustered and is so gullible, and Dane just eggs him on — I laughed so much during this book! It wasn’t all fun and teasing though. When Patrick has to choose between Dane and the story of a lifetime to send his career where he has always wanted to go, the same thoughts were running through my mind as they went through his, understanding the pulls for both sides, but not sure which I could or would choose. It does highlight the age old solution to many things though — communication, or the lack thereof.

Both characters were very realistic and relatable, the chemistry and “hookups” were off the charts sexy and steamy, the resolve of both given the feelings was admirable, and the way they were able to realize what they needed to do was very satisfying. Good feelings at the end made me smile. Another book with characters and situations that drew me in and kept me engaged from the first page to the last, just what I expect from Casey Morales. Highly recommend this book.

It is an excellent story that flows well. I feel that from the first collision, Patrick pulled up, and firefighters turned around to avoid dealing with the press. When Patrick is assigned to write a day in the life of a firefighter, he reaches out to Dane. What neither of them knew was what the article was going to turn into.

I found Patrick and Dane to be a great couple. There was a lot to pack into their relationship/non-relationship since they were trying to stay on the down low, from the first date to getting to know each other more.

I could picture the fire from how it was described and the fear Patrick was feeling waiting to know if Dane was injured.

I could feel Patrick’s and Dane’s emotions when the article came out. Then, the ups and downs from the breakup. There was enough time from breakup to coming to terms with what happened for one of them to put out an olive branch.

I feel the things I gathered from the story are trust, love, friendship, work morals and ethics, and found family.

Patrick is a reporter and his goal is to be a front page news reporter instead of writing fluff pieces on dog parks and articles that the word count is less than 200 words. Trying to get the jump over other newbie reporters he wakes up early and listens to a scanner and chases an ambulance to an accident hoping to get a story. Instead he sees a sexy firefighter who flirts with Patrick.

Being assigned to do a story on the day and the life of a firefighter, Patrick thinks about Dane, the fireman. Looking him up, getting permission for a ride along brings the two men together. Patrick isn’t Dane’s usual hookup. Dane is dark haired, tanned all over and muscles for days. Patrick wears thick glasses, has a think wiry body and would be classified as a nerd. But Dane is interested… very and soon both catch feelings. But a problem at the fire house breaks the two apart.

Great story!! I love firemen/nerd stories and this is full of all the feels!!! Can’t wait for book two!.

I really wanted to like this book as I have read others by his authour and enjoyed them, but this one did not do it for me.

I felt like the characters moved way too fast and the character of Patrick was too cutesy for me to get into his character.

I also had a bit of trouble connecting with Dane, who to be honest, was a bit of a jerk.

I think I would have liked to see more character development, as that may have lead to me caring more about what happened to them.

I will give this book a 5/5. The main characters are Patrick, a reporter, and Dane, a fireman. The two men meet at the scene of an accident as Patrick is chasing a story. Patrick gets assigned to do a story about the lives of fireman at Dane’s station. The two men continue get to know each. Patrick is tipped off that there is something illegal goi g on at the station and de ides to follow up on the tip. The story makes his career. Dane feels betrayed and shuts Patrick out of his life. The two men will have to really communicate if they want a second chance either way each other. I am looking forward to reading other books by this author.

It's the first book I read from this author and I liked it. It was entertaining and couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the pace and the relationship development. I liked both MC, at the beginning more Dane and at the end more Patrick, but finally they complete each other.
What I liked less, and the reasons I downgraded a star, are that the 3rd act break-up was so very obvious since the very first chapters, that during such break-up one of the MC lust over all the time over another character, and that sometimes the timelines are blurry.

Dane a fireman, Patrick a reporter. Dane & Patrick first meet on a routine call. They have a short conversation, nothing major. Patrick gets a job from his editor to do a scoop on firehouses. Patrick goes to Dane. They hit it off. Patrick's story is not going the way the news editor wants it & pushes him to expose theft of drugs in the firehouse. Patrick's story goes live, lives are ruined & Dane feels like it's his fault for letting Patrick in to do this to his friends. **I received an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, BookSirens and the author, for the opportunity.

I was not sure about posting this. However, I decided to do it because my review might resonate with someone, and after reading so many good reviews it's better to offer a different perspective on this story. My opinion is probably unpopular, so take it in a critical way.

The story, in fact, has no big faults. Everything was going good enough until the (unfortunately) expected 3rd act breakup. I knew it was coming with how big the misunderstanding was, but the problem was no the breakup in itself (They were barely dating, just trying things out and getting to know each other). At that moment, characters started acting incoherently and loosing their supposed personalities, things slowed down and nothing happened for almost 10% of the book. Sorry, that's not actually true, there was something happening 🤡, and here comes my main problem: firefighter MC started getting horny out of nowhere, everyone around him was suddenly hot and got him hard at any given time, even a guy he claimed to hate and find annoying got him all wet and brothered... That's not normal, right?

There was a moment that got me questioning stuff: He was at the gym, found a guy checking him out, thought "I'm hot af", got hard and wanted everyone in the gym to know and see him sporting a hard-on... then he watched that guy masturbate in the very public (!!!) showers and probably thought he was like a sex god or something 🤣. Very weird.

The book was already very sexual, not in a literal way because there's only a couple of smut scenes, nothing exaggerated, but every dialogue was charged with awkward innuendos and overly sexual jokes that stoped being funny early on. I'm talking about every single character doing this 😭, no matter what role they played or their personalities, everything was an excuse for a dirty comment. This happened in every single conversation 🙂, not a serious subject was mentioned. There was a scene in a hospital with a friend being hurt and probably going to prison and they were still joking and talking about a hot nurse... It's not that I don't enjoy a good joke or can't laugh at a double meaning sentence, but here it was excessive, it ruined the story for me.

Also, the other MC was heartbroken and crying because of the separation, and his friends only knew how to make jokes about firefighters (it was getting a little disrespectful with how much the book sexualized a serious job like that). I felt very sad about that character, he's the only one who suffered through the book.

A few moth after the shower thing and all the hornyness, firefighter ask him to marry him 🤡. Honestly, I saw no future for that relationship. Sorry, but reporter MC doesn't know the man he's about to marry, and that's dangerous.

Conclusion: This book was not for me 😭.

Warning ‼️ Spoilers included!!!

I wish this system allowed for partial points! This is definitely a 4.5!! Casey Morales has done it again with captivating characters. Patrick and Dane make it simple to love them. The Heartstrings series begins with Fighting the Flames Within.

At the site of an emergency call-out, the journalist Patrick and the firefighter Dane meet for the last time. After a short period of flirtation, the two men go their own ways, despite their mutual attraction. Afterwards, Patrick is asked by his supervisor to pen a "Day in the Life" piece about firefighters.

Dane and Patrick develop a deeper relationship while working on the piece. Patrick learns of a scandal involving Dane’s firehouse when he is falling for Dane. His profession and his developing affections for Dane are competing priorities. The plot swiftly progresses from their first encounter to their bedroom encounter, following the pattern of the insta-love trope.

Although I found this novel to be an enjoyable and quick read, I was disappointed by how superficial the backstories were compared to Casey Morales books that I have read. Lots of turmoil, passionate love scenes, and clever conversation. All of the characters, from the main characters to the supporting cast, are charming and interesting. But more background information regarding Patrick would have been helpful. A casual discussion gives us a small window into his childhood. We learn that Patrick had a privileged upbringing, but we are left to wonder how it shaped his character. On the other hand, we have some knowledge of Dane’s childhood, particularly regarding his time spent on a farm and he lost his father at an early age. Even with all that background, we don't get to know Dane’s family until the very end. Their inclusion was pleasant, but it didn't advance the plot in any meaningful way. Reading about them was like garnishing deviled eggs with paprika: it tastes good, but it doesn't really do much. It would have been nice if Dane’s mother had been more integrated throughout the story, maybe through a phone call or two. Similarly, Robert/Bobby, his brother, alludes to off-page discussions between the two of them regarding Patrick.

Please don't misunderstand me; Casey dealt with genuine issues within the story. To illustrate the point, consider Patrick's internal struggle between revealing the scandal at the firehouse and protecting his developing relationship with Dane. In the midst of falling profoundly and passionately for Dane, he receives news that could propel his career to new heights. Will he keep the truth about this new item hidden and hope his new love gets it? Additionally, we witnessed Dane's internal conflict as he tried to mend the relationship while still being loyal to his firehouse and coworkers.

Overall, this was an excellent story with many highs and lows; reading it will not be a mistake.

Fighting the Flames Within is an absolute gem that ignites a fiery blend of humor, romance, and drama, making it an unforgettable start to the Heartstrings of Honor series. Casey Morales expertly weaves a tale that is as heartwarming as it is entertaining, featuring a cast of characters that you’ll fall in love with.

The story kicks off with a chance encounter between Dane, a stoic and rugged firefighter, and Patrick, a quirky and charming reporter. From the moment they meet, the chemistry is palpable, and Morales does an incredible job capturing the tension between their contrasting personalities. Dane is the strong, silent type, while Patrick brings a delightful nerdiness that balances out Dane’s intensity. Their dynamic is both playful and passionate, drawing you in from the first page.

What I loved most about this book is how Morales skillfully navigates the complexities of their budding romance. As Patrick shadows Dane for a “day in the life” article, their relationship deepens, and we witness their connection blossom amidst the challenges they face. The interplay of light-hearted banter and more serious undertones adds depth to their journey, making their romance feel authentic and relatable.

The plot thickens when Patrick uncovers a scandal within the firehouse, putting him in a moral quandary that tests his feelings for Dane. This twist adds an intriguing layer to the story, creating tension that kept me eagerly turning the pages. I found myself rooting for both characters as they navigated the stormy waters of love and loyalty. Can Patrick balance his journalistic integrity with his growing affection for Dane? Morales keeps you guessing until the very end.

The humor sprinkled throughout the narrative is a delightful touch, providing levity that contrasts beautifully with the more serious themes. Casey Morales has a knack for crafting witty dialogue and amusing situations that kept me laughing out loud. It’s a testament to her writing that she can seamlessly blend laughter with moments of genuine emotion, creating a rich reading experience.

The secondary characters are equally compelling, adding to the sense of community and found family that permeates the book. Each character feels well-rounded and integral to the story, enhancing the overall warmth and charm of the narrative.

In summary, Fighting the Flames Within is a passionate and funny romance that left me completely enamored. With its engaging characters, heartfelt moments, and a plot that keeps you on your toes, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good slow-burn romance with a touch of intrigue. Casey Morales has set the stage beautifully for what promises to be an incredible series. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!.

What happens when a jock firefighter meets a nerdy journalist? Sparks fly, love is in the air, and C. Morales writes another captivating, vibrant, and engaging novel.
Everything about this book resonates with me: the charming, lovable characters, an exciting and dynamic narrative that keeps you invested, a well-developed plot, and C. Morales's signature writing style. Through eloquent, profound, yet entertaining prose, the author gives insight into Dane and Patrick's thoughts, emotions, and reactions in vivid and sometimes hilarious ways, giving them depth and making them relatable and likable.
Though the author touches on serious topics, they do not overwhelm the narrative, keeping the reading experience emotional yet not overbearing. The dilemma of privacy rights versus journalists' obligation to report is presented in a dual POV, offering unique insights from both sides.
The storyline focuses on Dane and Patrick's relationship. Rather than dwelling on the past, C. Morales introduces them through their present thoughts and feelings. The story flows smoothly, with twists and turns that keep you turning pages in anticipation.
Humorous banter, witty monologues, and Patrick's cascading thought process add dynamics and charm that engage the reader from the first to the last page.
Dane and Patrick are as different as can be. Dane is a grumpy, masculine firefighter, hiding his breakup hurt behind a wall of indifference. Patrick is a nerdy, insecure, and clumsy aspiring journalist trying to climb the media ladder. After their accidental meeting, they fall for each other immediately and hard, with sparks flying and sizzling attraction. Their journey to HEA is full of passion, hilarious and emotional moments, misunderstandings, and regrets.
What to expect? A heartwarming, fluent, feel-good, uplifting, and entertaining romance full of emotions, witty banter, and unexpected turns.
What not to expect: dark drama with lots of hurt, angst, and suspense; complex, broken characters; controversial issues; action; and mystery.
Disclaimer: I firmly believe that for every book written, there is a reader who will appreciate and enjoy it. This review reflects my personal and subjective opinion and should be read as such.
I received an ARC of this book with no obligation to provide a positive review. It is an independent and genuine reflection of my thoughts.

I was so disgusted with Dane during the break I DNFd. He lusted, in great detail, about way too many other people during the third act break up. (5 months) I wasn’t expecting that considering he went without sex for 7 months after breaking up with his previous boyfriend (Daniel). 🤮🤮🤮

Excerpt from Dane during the break up:
"I stood, letting the most delicious cock in the building tent my shorts in its slickened spot for all to see. I swaggered slowly toward the locker room, like I’d just worked leg day and could barely walk. My head was high, stacked chest stuck out, and fabric-straining cock leading the way..
When I got into the locker room, I stripped down, leaving my clothes in a pile next to my locker. I glanced down and grinned. My dick was fucking awesome, thick and long and ridiculously hard. Pre-cum pearled in the slit. I was so fucking horny. I wanted to grab it and jerk myself right there. A locker slammed. I whirled around. The kid was three lockers down. He was standing there, stark naked, and just as hard as I was. His body was lean, as I expected, but his abs … I hadn’t seen them coming. They were so deeply etched across his stomach that shadows formed between them beneath the room’s florescent lights. He had a tiny, tasty trail of sandy brown hair starting just above his outie and descending to a thick bush of perfect pubes. I didn’t mean to stare, but I couldn’t stop myself. He was everything I’d imagined in my daydream; even more. He reached down and teased his head with a finger, scooping up a tiny dribble and lifting it to his lips. His pink tongue appeared and slowly—achingly—lapped it up. I thought I might come just watching him. His eyes locked onto mine, and I swear my dick twitched. My heart thudded. Blood raged through me like an overflowing river. The guy cocked one brow, touched his dick again, then turned and strode into the sauna. His ass was round and dusted with the same hair as his stomach. It was firm and plump and so ready to be grabbed and … Fuck. Patrick flashed before me.

This first in a new series is still very different from the author's previous books.
I love the author's diversity in her writing.
This book is funny and full of hot scenes and just the right amount of drama.
I really liked the characters, so opposite yet complementary.
I would have liked to know more about Dane's past.
You become attached to both characters, you love them both equally and... when the going gets tough, it's impossible to take a stand. You want them to find their way back to each other, and at the same time... It's hard to forgive betrayal. It's one thing for him to write the article, but a little warning beforehand would have been the minimum.
Fortunately, they meet again, but I would have liked a little more discussion and explanation on this part too.

This book is a pleasure to read, a new universe, very well documented and... Divinely well written :) with engaging characters and lots of humor.

-----

I don't know why I keep torturing myself reviewing this author's books. Do not misunderstand me. I LOVE THEM!!! LOOOOOVE THEEEM! Each and every one of them. But at this point, I don't know what else I can write about him and his work. I don't know how else to praise the way he writes, nor how to explain how this man jumps from a totally incredible autobiographical series (something like that), to a book that involves politics, and then we have the Nashville series and to complete, from there he jumps to a historical story set in the 1940s, full of spies, romance and so on, and it still doesn't end there, but that series isn't even finished and he starts to write a paranormal/fantasy series and well, now this one here! AND I DON'T KNOW HOW HE DOES IT!!!! Omg Casey, how do you do it? How do you create these stories in your head, and then translate them to paper the way you do? And it's not that he doesn't write about things that other authors haven't written about. But with his refreshing style and his sense of humor, the result is amazingly ORIGINAL!

So there you have it. Now you know why you NEED to read this story about Dane a tough firefighter, and Patrick, a reporter in search of success. Two completely different people who, however, fit in with each other from the first moment they meet. And I repeat: Why do you need to read it? For all the reasons I wrote above!

The path to happiness for these two is not easy. Because of his work, Patrick discovers certain things at the station where Dane works, and Dane feels it like a betrayal. He feels that Patrick broke his trust and gets really angry and walks away from him. Patrick must fight to get him back, and he doesn't know if he will succeed this time.

I was given an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

Fighting the Flames Within by Casey Morales is an MM Romance as well as the first book in the Heartstrings of Honor series.

The romance is between a firefighter Dana and Patrick a journalist
For the local newspaper.

Fighting the Flames is almost two novels in one. Firstly we have the romance between the two lead characters with sparks flying between the two of them from the start. With a number of spicy scenes that definitely are, open door.

Having said that, the romance between Dane and Patrick definitely starts off as insta lust. Casey Morales does a very good job of showing how the connection between the two of them does turn into a more of a romantic relationship as the story goes on.

The Middle part of the novel is centred around Patrick doing a bit of investigative Journalism on the friestation which Dane works at.

While Fighting the Flames within fulfilled the role of a good romance with a well crafted romantic plot line between the two main characters at 490 pages it may have been a little bit two long.

One defence of the novel being the leng was the investigation by Pattrick which with a little expansion could almost have been a novel in its own right. In action the spicy scenes were not just a couple of pages.

Both of these were not an issue as they seemed to be a natural length. The issue as a reader was the ending seemed to drag on way too long.

Yes it is a romance. We have had the usual 3rd act break up, really done well, but once that is over and Patrick and Dane got back together a novel does not need what felt like a 60 page epilogue.

Having said that Fighting the Flames Within by Casey Morales is well worth reading for the right reader just be prepared for a long epilogue.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am writing this review with a book hangover, this is what this book has done to me, after not wanting to put it down until I had finished it.
Patrick wants to further his reporting career and he thinks that going to a 911 call will help. That was their first meeting and you could feel the chemistry sizzling from the start if the book. Patrick is your cute nerdy reporter, who is a bit of a worrier, especially when it comes to relationships.
Dane was firefighter who had a body of a god, he came across detached when he was on duty but as you read more about him and seeing how he interacted with his folk, you know that he was a kind loyal person.
This was a page turner from page one and I enjoyed how we followed Patrick with his research for his big break, and it felt like the day in the life of, which is funny as this is how it all started. The interaction between Patrick and Dane was believable and even when it was not going as smoothly, I was still rooting for them to be together as together they were hot.
What made this story more enjoyable was the secondary characters and I am looking forward to seeing if some of these have their own story. Shout out to Grady, Drew and Eduardo.
There is a word of warning and it may be advisable to not have be drinking whilst reading this story as there are times that conversations between the MCs and their family and friends had me laughing out loud and I swear if I had had a drink, my kindle would be wearing the contents.
I am really looking forward to seeing where this series takes me and if they are all like Dane and Patrick's story I may need to book the following day off work to recover from another book hangover.
