Immortal Sorceress #3
Shadow of the Sorceress
How deep do I need to bury the past to make it stay down?
Twice in two months, a witch named Abigail has used my dark history to try to destroy me. For weeks, my team has hunted her, but she’s as skilled at evading us as I am at stuffing my nightmares where I can’t see them.
Except she’s not evading us anymore. Now she’s coming straight for us, and I have to be ready. For every blow she strikes, I need to strike back—even if it means turning my feet in a direction I haven’t walked in almost nine hundred years.
Emrick and my chosen family stand with me, but I fear they’ll get caught in the crossfire. Especially as secrets are revealed and the truth unravels in ways that make my world tremble.
Abigail thinks she can use my past to draw blood. I’ll make her regret every drop.

Totally immersed in this nail biting, but emotional ride with Kat, I could not put the book aside. Abigail continues to create havoc and mayhem and the team went in overdrive to catch up to her after one of her attacks came at a very high cost. I could sense it coming, but hoped for another outcome, which Emrick could not change as he had to honour his promise. The ending, after a life and death fight, not a cliffhanger, shows there's more evil coming for Kat.

Argh. I just completed this, and I want to get the next book now. Since I can’t, I will tell you that this is an action-packed book, and I cried a little bit in this. Poor Kat is thrown in so many directions, and she feels like she’s running in circles. Kat’s desperate to get Abigail before she actually manages to hurt someone Kat loves, but she keeps one step ahead of her and her allies. I love all these characters, even grumpy Gavin and Barrett. I did figure out one of the big reveals in this one, but one I didn’t know. I can’t really say much, but this is a non-stop, action-filled, well-written addition to the series, and like I said above, I cried a little about a big scene. What happened? Read it and find out. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Just when I think Krista Walsh cannot surprise me anymore…. She goes and drops a major bombshell. I also didn’t think my heart could break more after reading Power of the Sorceress… but it could and it did in this book.
Katerina faces her most elusive enemy in this book and it takes the strength of not only herself…. But her entire family to not only find them but face them. I already was in love with every character but continue to gain a greater love for them as we learn more about them and see them supporting one another. I’ve been dying for more Kat & Emrick moments and this book you get A LOT! I can’t think of another fictional character who I feel connected to or understand as well as I do… Krista Walsh is an artist weaving a beautiful story filled with raw emotions and incredible connections!

CW: death of family, some spice, some gore
Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “Shadow of the Sorceress” releases June 27, 2024!
In my head recently, I had the thought that I could probably use a book to make me cry a little, since I haven’t had many of those lately. When I tell you this one delivered…
Kat Palon’s past is still haunting her, and it’s growing closer than ever. As the witch Abigail continues to make moves against Kat and her little family, tensions grow ever higher. Between that and Emrick’s continued interference, and resultant fading, everything in Kat’s life is reaching the boiling point.
Oh, don’t mind me, I’m just sobbing my eyes out over here. This is, by far, the best of the “Immortal Sorceress” series thus far, and that’s not something I say lightly. Every single installment, be it a full-length book or a novella, has been phenomenal, and this one just blew them all out of the water. I read it in a day solely because I refused to put it down, and I’m going to need some serious recovery time to handle the residual.
Per the usual setup for the series, the story takes place in modern-day Canada, and since the setting is not the focus for most of the books, it’s relatively laid back in its description. The biggest difference here, though, is that this book takes place almost entirely in places that feel like home to Kat, and this difference permeates everything about the story. You can feel the comfort and the safety and the *stress* hovering in the background, and I think that’s part of what makes this particular book so distinct.
Of course, as with any of the books in this series, the true heart is in the characters. Kat’s had a rough go of it lately, and all of her (not diminutive) trauma is popping back up at once to try and eat her alive. That’s, unfortunately, not so new for her now, but we get to see what she’s like when she’s surrounded by the people she calls family. And those characters? Those are the characters I’ll adore right alongside her.
I’m not going to be able to talk about the plot without giving away some major spoilers, but suffice it to say that it’s a doozy. I was hooked from page 1, and I’ve experienced more rage and despair and hope reading this story than I have from any one book in a hot minute. Pack tissues; you’re going to need them.
As I said before, this is easily the best of the series. Now, because it *is* indeed a series, you’ll have to at least start back at book 1 to understand what’s going on. But, if you like urban fantasy, all sorts of amazing magic, the best little found family, and a heroine who can and will light someone on fire, then this is the series for you.

Katerina of Palonia is your trope-standard, functionally immortal, elemental sorceress. The elements of fire and ice have coursed through her veins for nearly a millennia. She’s waged war against the forces of darkness and evil for that length of time as well. Emrick, servant of Death and conveyor of magical souls across the veil has been by her side, loving her, anchoring her, and being her connection to life, as ironic as that is. Adrian is the third in their little group, an immortal vampire who moved beyond hunting mortals long before Kat even began walking the earth. Though he is no longer a part of the hunt, his wisdom, patience, and love for his friends keep their focus where it should be, where it MUST be, to wage the war they must. Standard setting, standard characters, and standard timeline for a feel-good Urban Fantasy, right?
The mysterious “Abigail” is still steps ahead of Team Kat, constantly mocking, constantly threatening, and killing mundanes Kat cares for. Though Kat is back in fighting shape, getting stronger every day, Abigail’s power is vast, seemingly unending, and her vicious ruthlessness is a bottomless well of cruelty. Gavin, the sorcerer that shouldn’t be, has come around to Team Kat (albeit begrudgingly) and has been training as well, intent on helping Kat vanquish the monster that he’s found is his kin. But even with a second sorcerer in the ranks, the wisdom of an immortal vampire, the visions of a budding seer, and the kickass ingenuity of the witchy pair lovingly called “Muroppy”, can Kat hope to conquer her past before Abigail steals her present?
“Shadow of the Sorceress”, by Krista Walsh, is the third book in her Immortal Sorceress series. Set in and around Toronto (STILL a welcome change from Chicago, New York, LA, and London as settings go), this series continues to be a trip through the great white north to the depths of magic’s darkest alleys. The book is fun, funny, and an original take on the classic “immortal magic user in a strange land” trope. The writing is clever, the characters fully developed, and the story super engaging. With the slow-burn romance woven throughout the plot that continues to heat up (let’s hear it for skin-to-skin contact baby!) and a really interesting set of lore that keeps things interesting, I can’t recommend this book enough. This story can’t be put down, and you won’t want to anyway. Be careful you don’t get burned though, this series is sure to keep heating up!

Another powerful, emotional book in the Immortal Sorceress series. This book starts where we last left off. Her "family" have moved to Adrian's to keep safe (well as safe as they can be). They are still hunting "Abigail" the witch behind all of this. Only now, Abigail has come to them. Finding her on their island and so close has really shaken everyone up, especially Kat. It's a race to try to figure out her weakness in time to save her family.
In this book, everything is really taken up a few notches. There is stronger magic, huge secrets revealed and some of the most emotional moments I have gotten from a book in awhile. Emrick must find a way to balance helping Kat with not interfering, we get very emotional and painful memories from Kat's life in Palonia and a point where I wanted to scream "HOW COULD YOU?!" at Krista! I read my books at the gym over my lunch hour and had to pull myself together so I didn't cry at the gym!
But it was not all sad emotions either! There are the wonderful scenes where everyone comes together. There's Poppy and Murisa (Muroppy) and even Cuddles. I just can't get enough of Cuddles! (Probably because I can't smell the cat!) And there's Kat, who is growing stronger every day. Her love and determination for her family is now undeniable.
This book takes care of a major plot point, while at the same now giving us something more to worry about! And I can't even begin to figure out what or who will be the next challenge, I cannot wait to find out!

Danger draws close as Kat, Emrick, and fam are directly targeted by the mysterious Abigail. As new powers are unveiled in the villain, new dangers rise, striking closer and closer to Kat’s home and heart.
This is deep in a series, so I want to keep the synopsis/recap as brief as possible BECAUSE being this deep in a series means the proverbial poo has hitteth the fan, and I spent a few long minutes staring at the ceiling after reading parts of this book.
If you’re an urban fantasy fan and love a strong, dynamic female lead, Kat Palon is for you. If you like twisty turns and a layered story where the reveals deliciously unfold, The Immortal Sorceress is for you.
Walsh is crushing it with this series, giving just the right amount of detail and backstory in the previous entries to make this book LAND. She masterfully captures grief, both new and ancient, in a manner that any reader can connect with and writes the intricacies of a Found Family with a deft, lovely hand.
One of the true joys of this series has been watching the frenemy-ship between Kat and Barrett evolve, and in this book … THIS BOOK. To say more would be spoiler central, so I won’t, other than PLEASE don’t sleep on these books!

I had the privilege of reading an ARC copy of this book sent to me by the author.
This book explores many intense emotions as Kat tries to track down the witch named Abigail who has somehow been using knowledge of the events which occurred in Palonia 900 years ago. Now that Abigail has shifted to direct attacks Kat is trying to protect her found family from harm, identify who Abigail actually is, and stop her.
There is a tragic sacrifice of a key character before the climatic scene in the book. During the climatic battle we learn how Abigail was tied to Palonia and whether she had other allies. In the aftermath of the climatic battle Kat and each member of her found family are processing their emotions and finding strength in each other.
Kudos to Krista for how she wove together the different characters, their narratives, and the story built on the foundation of the previous books. I invite readers to enjoy the whole series to get the maximum impact from this book. And there is more to come!

Krista Walsh never disappoints. Shadow Of The Sorceress is another strong story and solid addition to the series.
As always, the setting and mood are so well written that I was immediately immersed and drawn along with Kat, Emrick and their friends as they hunted for their enemy. Things happen fast in this book and the pacing is perfect to keep readers turning page after page for that one extra paragraph...or scene...or chapter! I think the alternating first person POV's helps build this connection and tension, and I definitely enjoy that immediacy.
One thing in particular that I like about Kat is her willingness to delegate tasks to those she knows have better skills than herself. She accepts her own role and always supports her team.
The emotions are right off the charts in this book! Make sure you have a comfort blanket ready to help you get through 'those' bits because it's pretty raw in places.
The plot twists in this book leave me wanting the next in the series RIGHT now!!

I had only just started reading Shadow of the Sorceress when I found myself thinking that Krista Walsh is such an amazing author. Her gift for storytelling pulls the reader in and doesn't let go even after the story has been told. "Shadow" picks up where "Fear" lets off with Katerina and her "family" working together to find and destroy Abigail, the Summoner. Kat realizes that, although unrelated, these people are her true family and she wants to protect them even with her life. Thus it is Ms. Walsh takes the reader on an emotional and heartbreaking ride. Tears will be shed by many with this installment in the Immortal Sorceress series. "Shadow" is a great continuation of Kat's story. The reader will have the satisfaction of one problem solved only to realize that there is still an evil out there that must be dealt with before the family can ever find peace. I definitely recommend Shadow of the Sorceress and I can't wait for the next book.

I loved reading Shadow of the Sorceress as Miss Walsh doesn't disappoint her readers. She keeps them on the edge of their seats while being pulled into the story till the very end.
As Kat and her team continue to hunt down the Evil Doers someone from her past resurfaces, Somebody who Kat thought to be dead... Alodie or Abigail as she is known in the present time.
I loved how Gavin was rescued in book 3 and Kat took him in. Gavin is another Sorcerer meaning someone in his family lines was from the same village that Kat was from... Palonia.
The characters in Shadow of the Sorceress are amazing and I loved them specially Adrian who is a very old Vampire. Emerick who is a Shepherd Herder or Grim Reaper as Kat and Poppy call him. Emrick works with Death and he escorts the fallen souls from the living world to he afterlife.
So, if you love Magical Witches, Vampires, Amazing battles then this book is for you.

Brilliant as always.
We learn more about Kat's past and her relationship with the 3 that caused the mess in the first place. Kat and company race to find Abigail before she destroys them all. Unraveling the past requires Kat to face hers back in her home town of Palonia.
This was a tense, action filled addition to the rest of the series. As usual Krista Walsh pulls all the emotion from you and rips out your heart. However, she gives you back some satisfaction as Kat is able to lay some of her past to rest for good. It's not over, far from it, because there are more powerful enemies to fight.
As usual, this is a great series, and well worth the emotional turmoil. Highly recommend this series to serious UF lovers who like their action to be tempered by a large dose of romance! Pick up the series today!

This time Kat goes head-to-head with Abigail, as the witch comes for her – and her found family – directly. Always a step behind, Kat and her friends struggle to get ahead of this witch with a vendetta, once they don’t even understand – yet.
Kat is an engaging character who, like most of us, struggles with the ghosts of her past, while trying to protect her family in the present. Knowing what is the right course of action in the face of impossible choices are themes we can all relate to. The supporting characters are nicely fleshed out, which makes the highs, and lows, feel so real. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This series is just getting better and better! I particularly liked this one as part of it was set in my neck of the woods, England's beautiful Lake District, so that was particularly fun for me.
But anyone will love the great writing and brilliant characters, with the tension just ramping up and up!
Lots of action, which I always love, and some great twists and turns of the plot. The protagonists are becoming much more of a team, which is lovely to read about.
There was one part of the book where I was really surprised, and quite sad. Well, very sad. But I shall say no more...

If I didn't have a job, this book wouldn't have gotten a break. It's too good to set down and too hard to do it.
Once again, Walsh does an exceptional job of bringing depth to her characters. They have so many layers and most of them should see a psychiatrist to help them deal with the trauma Walsh puts them through.
I saw what was going to happen, but that didn't make it any less impactful when it did. Such is Walsh's ability to weave an amazing tale.
I can't wait to read the next book.

Fantastic 3rd book in the series by Krista Walsh. It is even better than the 1st 2. Very few books make me loose my temper, but I couldn’t read for a day because of it. Kat and her family of misfits are a great team! Loss, tragedy, fun, cookies, love, respect are all part of this great read. Put this on your ‘must read’ list. Paranormal unite!

Holy crap this series just gets better and better. Krista writes such an enthralling story, that I could barely put this book down. I refuse to give any spoilers, but this installment is an emotional rollercoaster. Get ready to want to cry. Krista weaves her tale with beautiful prose and some heartbreak. Super excited for the final installment of this series!!

So I’m filling these all in after the fact. I’m not sure exact dates, but I think I was actually done reading them all by now.
Anyway. This one also came before book 0.5… oops. But yes, the fear Demon is by far my favourite villain. He is evil, cunning, intelligent, and… fearsome. I loved the depth of her world building for this series!

What a rollercoaster of emotions this third installment has been. You'll laugh, scream, cry, and everything in between. Kat & Co. are all well-written characters so even though they are fictional, Krista's writing makes your feelings for them very real.

Amazing story. Like a wild rollercoaster ride, you won’t be disappointed. Awesome characters . Great world building… it’s impossible to put the book down and when you reach the end you just need the next book…

This is the hardest book of the series but it's so necessary to the story. It''s hard to see our FMC struggle to overcome the obstacles and hurt thrown at her. Muroppy (couple name) work hard to protect Kats group from harm, even Gavin is doing his best to help (while still hating his magic) Kat and Barrett even find a common purpose.
This book in the series hits hard and hurts at times but it leaves the entire group with a new sense of purpose. I loved seeing the fire lit not only in our sorceress, but in every member of the group. And having at least closure as to who Abigail really was and ending that part of this was vindicating 🔥🔥

A Sorceress, an aspect of Death, a Seer, a pair of witches, a zombie cat, a vampire, and a couple of people who hate magic saunter into a book...and the result is a gripping story of love, loss, family, and how the past informs the present and can endanger the future. This book made me laugh out loud and share quotes with whomever was trapped in the room with me, and this book broke my heart. Such wonderful characters, such complicated relationships, such depth. One of these marvelous characters is in a wheelchair, and that fact about her is treated with the same matter-of-fact naturalness as the fact of another character's red hair. What lovely representation, especially for someone (me!) who spends time in a wheelchair, herself. A compelling book in a wonderful series, I highly recommend it all!

Abigail is making life difficult for Kat and het chosen family.
Kat does everything she can to keep them safe. Emrick is risking so much to stand by her side, but how can he stay away when she is in so much danger?
This book is the middle one of the series and it was a hell of a ride.

Gosh are these characters so cool! I mean, we have a snarky guy who loathes magic and magic users, we have a sorcerer who doesn't want to be one, we have a retired vampire, we have a sassy necromancer, we have a cat brought to life, yeah, REALLY cool when you add that to the awesomeness that is Kat! And then there's Emrick.... OH! MY! WORD! EMRICK!!! A character I literally salivate over! I character that can take me ANYWHERE the heck he wants! But let me put my tongue back in my mouth and try to capture my... ahem...OTHER emotional turmoil that is this read. Yep, Ms Walsh didn't let up for a single moment, she kept pounding away at my very essence, drawing it out and releasing it with a twang! Oh not in a bad way, rather in a way that had my emotions screaming in overdrive from the sheer drama and intensity of this book! And geez, WAS it tense! And heck, let's face it, for me personally, if a book doesn't elicit strong emotions in me, it fails to capture me. I need to get lost in the book, which I did. I need to enjoy the world the author crafts, which I did. I need to be able to laugh, to weep, to cringe, which I did. I NEED to feel it all, the despair, the joy, the drama, the warmth that infuses my very being and let me make myself clear, I FREAKING FELT IT ALL!
So much has occurred for Kat, TO Kat and although she finally has her mojo back, she's not the at the same powerful strength she was. Her previous despondency has made her a target and the attacks on her keep coming. But from whom is the question. Well, THAT question is answered in a explosive turn of events! Trying to decipher the who, Kat and the gang are still on the back foot. All they have is a name, Abigail and Abigail is ALWAYS a few steps ahead and it's becoming more dire with each passing day, to find her, apprehend her, put a stop to her. The newfound friendship from Poppy and Murisa is a laugh a minute wrapped up in concern. Yep, Poppy DOES have a mouth on her, but her support of Kat is 100% awesome. I seriously love her! Muroppy, as Kat coined them are unbelievable together, what they can do is spectacular! Geez, am I glad they're in Kat's camp.
Kat has got her mojo back in full swing but there is discontent amongst the supernaturals, they see Kat as a threat, as a destroyer and not a guardian. Her very reputation is at risk, where she should be able to rely on the supernatural world to aid her in ridding the world of a dangerous witch, they see her as a foe, not a saviour. Talk about diminishing resources! Then we have Barret, I love the love/hate relationship between Kat and Barrett! I fell in love with Barret's stoic disdainful attitude the first time I met him. What I love is that it's so credible, spun it in such a way that allows me, the reader, to process what he's processing, to understand why. The relationship, if one can call it that, between Emrick and Kat had me shouting "nooooo!!!! Not fair!!!!" I'm still deciding if I will forgive Krista for that bombshell...
Emrick is killing me!!!! I NEED him to be able to be with Kat! He is the most beautiful character I've come across in a long time. I love the relationship between Kat and him, the captivating description, both warmed and shattered my heart! The love they feel is soooo gorgeous, I feel it in my bones! I felt EVERY SINGLE EMOTIONS! If I don't get emotional, whether to weep or laugh or that warm feeling in my tummy, I know I'm reading a dud, and in this book ALL the emotions are top notch in my opinion! The one emotion I'm having a hard time with is the devastation I felt when...when...geez, I can't tell you but heck do you need to read it to find out! These perfectly expanded characters, this perfect pacing, this perfect world (ok, maybe NOT so perfect!) What IS perfect is this book, what IS perfect is this series!

I don’t have enough words for how good this book is! The previous ones were exciting and full of action and intrigue, but this one ramps all that up! I was left breathless so many times, and even though the ending was quite satisfying, I found myself wanting the next book RIGHT NOW PLEASE!
