World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God’s Chosen Messenger

Rate this book
This book tells the story of an uncompromising Pharisee and religious bigot named Saul, later renamed Paul, who initiated the first persecution of Christians, including approving the death of Christianity’s first martyr, Stephen, after the crucifixion of Jesus. To Saul, those Jews who followed Jesus were heretics fit for imprisonment or death. Then he encountered the risen savior Jesus Christ and became an intrepid messenger of the gospel of salvation, grace, and love to Jews and former pagans alike by believing in Jesus as the Son of God and the perfect sacrifice that atoned for the sin of the world. He went on, despite assassination attempts, imprisonments, shipwrecks, beatings, and stoning, to establish churches throughout much of the Roman Empire, appoint leaders, dispatch worthy associates to far-flung provinces, write much of the New Testament, and submit to execution after witnessing to Emperor Nero. Accused of turning the world upside down, he left behind committed followers who continued his mission without fear and in the power of the Spirit.

An excellent written account from the perspective Paul. It feels like a journey that we share with him; his pain and joy right from the beginning of the road to Damascus. I felt enlightened by reading this book.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men. ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭22:29‬ ‭KJV

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10:18‭-‬20‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[18] On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. [19] But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, [20] for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

The Apostle Paul was a man who was diligent concerning the business of our Father, following in the footsteps of Jesus (see Luke 2:49 & 1 Corinthians 11:1 KJV).
In World Upside Down, Dr. Louis McCall details Paul's journey, by highlighting his conversion on the road to Damascus (Acts 22:6), up to him standing trial before Caesar (Nero).
Dr. McCall's book mentions some political reasons Nero had for specifically targeting & using followers of The Way to distract Roman citizens.
Dr. McCall did extensive research and traveled to locations mentioned in World Upside Down. He took his own photos of these locations, which can be viewed in the book.
Dr. Louis makes use of his Holy Spirit-inspired imagination to add in a few conversations Paul might have engaged in, as he was someone who aimed to redeem time & make the most of every opportunity for bringing a soul into God's Kingdom (see Ephesians 5:16 & Colossians 4:5). Jesus is our ultimate example of this (see Luke 23:42-43).
The majority of World Upside Down is very literal scripture, presented in a story format to help the reader grasp the breadth of Paul's journeys. As I read this book, I suddenly realized I was reading entire segments of the New Testament, only without verse and chapter numbers.
This book reminds us that Paul saw his trial before the Roman emperor, & his many other chances to speak in public, as opportunities to be a witness for the only Way to eternal salvation. Paul preached & wrote about the Kingdom of God, that we must trust in the atonement of Christ Jesus to receive a pardon for our sin by the Father, & that God the Father raised Jesus from the dead (see Acts 17:31, Acts 28:31, & Romans 3:22-26.)
You will be inspired by the story of Paul standing before Nero, at the conclusion of this book. Nero was used to people begging for their lives & doing anything he commanded, hoping to receive his mercy & pardon.
However, Paul had already received the only pardon he cared about & his focus was on finishing race the Lord Jesus gave him (see Acts 20:24).
You will be encouraged as you read about Paul's divinely ordered steps & stops (see Psalm 37:23 KJV & Acts 16:7). The Holy Spirit will use the events recorded in this book to highlight for you that He's able to determine your steps/paths as you acknowledge Him (see Proverbs 16:9 & Proverbs 3:6).
World Upside Down chronicles God saving Paul from every evil attack and finally bringing him safely into His heavenly kingdom (see 2 Timothy 4:18).
No obstacle was able to keep Paul from arriving at his appointed places to declare God's message, in God's timing (see Acts 17:26 & 2 Corinthians 11:25).
Reading World Upside Down, will reinforce your scriptural perspective regarding God's purposes for the events in your life and the opportunities God gives you to show others who He is (see 2 Corinthians 3:2-3). As you read Word Upside Down, you will find yourself practicing Philippians 4:8.

Paul's trial before Caesar can be summed up by Proverbs 29:26, "Many seek a rulers favor, but every man's judgement comes from the Lord." Nero assumed that Paul's life was in the hands of the Roman empire, like Pilate also did when Jesus stood before him (see John 19:10). But Paul had an eternal perspective (see Colossians 3:1-4) and saw even his most humble audience (see Acts 20:9-11) as one more opportunity to win another soul to the Kingdom Of Light (see Acts 26:18,29). That is wisdom defined (see Proverbs 11:30).

Paul didn't care about what Nero could do to his body, but he feared Him (God) who can destroy both soul and body in hell (see Matthew 10:28 & Philippians 2:12). From his perspective, Paul was already crucified with Christ & he understood Jesus loved him & gave Himself for him (see Galatians 2:20). In the pages of Dr. McCall's book, you will find a man ready to exalt Christ by life or by death. Paul's desire was to be with Christ (see Philippians 1:20-23). So he could not be persuaded to alter the integrity God's message through bribery (see Acts 24:25-26) or threat of death (see Acts 14:19-20). Paul so embraced God's message that he described it as "my gospel" (see Romans 16:25).
He literally shook off death (see Acts 28:3-5) until his appointed time came to die as a witness to the Lordship of Jesus (see Acts 17:7).

World Upside Down contains all of these events & serves as a testimony of God's faithfulness to give one person a vision and provide them with the grace to see that vision fulfilled. God did this for Paul (see 2 Timothy 4:7-8) & he can do it for you & me as well (see Romans 2:7-11).
Dr. McCall also tells stories of God's people who assisted Paul in the various seasons of his mission. This book puts a spotlight on people like Ananias, who accepted Paul as a brother in Christ and prayed for him to receive his sight (see Acts 9:17); and Barnabas who used his own reputation to give Paul credibility within the household of faith (see Acts 9:26-27). May we too, "accept others, just a Christ accepted us, in order to bring praise to God." (Romans 15:7).
Dr. McCall's book chronicles Paul placing women in leadership positions. I found this to be important, as some only consider the Apostle's letter to the Corinthian church (see 1 Corinthians 14:35) & his letter to Timothy (see 1 Timothy 2:11-12) as his only discussions of women leading at church. They use these letters to say Paul thought less of women, but the Apostle writes of including women in leadership in the church at Rome (see Romans 16:1-5). Dr. Louis refers to this in his book.
The Apostle Peter also declares wives as equal heirs with their husbands in the grace of life (see 1 Peter 3:7).
At various points in this book, Dr. McCall highlights the Apostle Peter's life. Paul's confrontation with Peter's racism in the Galatian church, as well as Peter's own trial before Caesar are included.
Dr. Louis writes about what awaiting trial together & being imprisoned together could have been like for these two "pillars of the church" (see Galatians 2:9).

Be encouraged to purchase World Upside Down. God bless you.

2024 apart from other reading I had an opportunity to listen to BIBLE audio book in my language(Telugu - South Indian) that allowed me to understand how , when and why Christianity emerged. The chapter and history of Paul taking Jesus's works before into the world helped the religion spread and embrace more people. In this connection, reading this book was a helping experience.

A Life Transformed by Faith
Reading this book was an eye-opening experience as it beautifully captures the incredible transformation of the Apostle Paul. Once known as Saul, he was a fierce persecutor of Christians until his dramatic encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. This moment changed everything—he became Paul, a devoted missionary who spread the Gospel despite immense challenges. I was deeply moved by the way the author portrays Paul's unwavering faith, even in the face of imprisonment, persecution, and hardship. The historical and cultural insights woven into the narrative helped me appreciate not just Paul's journey but also the relevance of his message today.

Spreading the Gospel Amidst Challenges
One of the most compelling aspects of the book is its exploration of Paul's relentless mission. His early days of preaching, his struggles to gain acceptance among believers, and his passionate debates over Jewish traditions versus faith in Jesus made me admire his perseverance even more. His friendships with early disciples like Barnabas and Timothy, as well as his letters to Christian communities, showed his deep love and commitment to spreading the message of salvation. I found myself reflecting on how Paul’s challenges still resonate today—his journey is a powerful reminder that faith often requires courage and endurance.

A Lasting Message of Hope
As I followed Paul’s journey across cities, facing opposition yet remaining steadfast, I felt inspired by his unwavering commitment. The way he and his companions, Silas and Timothy, trusted in divine guidance was particularly moving. His letters to the Thessalonians and Corinthians, emphasizing faith, unity, and the power of Christ’s resurrection, still hold profound wisdom. This book is much more than a historical retelling—it is an inspiring reflection on perseverance, transformation, and the enduring power of faith. I finished it feeling encouraged to embrace my own spiritual journey with greater conviction.

Louis McCall's "World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God’s Chosen Messenger" is a meticulously crafted narrative that delves deep into the life and times of one of Christianity's most influential figures, Apostle Paul. McCall's book stands out as a compelling blend of historical accuracy and narrative flair, making it accessible to both scholars and general readers alike.

The strength of this book lies in its ability to present Apostle Paul not just as a biblical figure, but as a man of profound complexities and contradictions. McCall navigates through Paul’s early life, his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, and his subsequent missionary journeys with a keen eye for detail and context. The author's research is evident in every chapter, painting a vivid picture of the cultural and political landscape of the time.

What is particularly striking about McCall's approach is his balanced portrayal of Paul. He does not shy away from the controversies and debates that surround Paul's teachings and actions. Instead, he presents these elements with nuance, encouraging readers to understand the depth and breadth of Paul's influence in the early Christian church.

The narrative is enriched with references to historical sources, making it a treasure trove for those interested in biblical history. Yet, McCall's writing style ensures the book remains engaging and not overwhelmed by academic discourse. The inclusion of maps, illustrations, and timelines is a thoughtful touch, aiding in the visualization of Paul's journey.

In summary, Louis McCall's "World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God’s Chosen Messenger" is a remarkable work that offers a fresh and insightful look into the life of Apostle Paul. It is a book that not only informs but also inspires, challenging readers to look beyond the surface of a well-known biblical story. World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger by Louis McCall is a religious tome that provides a comprehensive account of the life of Paul, formerly known as Saul of Tarsus. Despite his background of persecuting Christians, Paul became a paramount figure in Christianity, and his writings continue to inspire and resonate with the church to this day. McCall skillfully draws parallels between Paul's life and its relevance to Christianity as a whole and the individual believer in modern times.

McCall delves deeply into the historical context of Paul's life, providing specific details of his daily routines and missionary journeys as an ambassador of Christ. Through these insights, McCall illuminates how Paul's work has shaped Christianity for centuries. Notably, much of the book is presented in a conversational layout between Paul and a guard named Marcus, while other prominent characters include Timothy, Mark, and Peter. Although some of these conversations are not canonical in the Bible, the points Paul makes through these dialogues, as written by McCall, are instrumental in conveying Paul's mature theology and teachings. This book is ideal for those interested in learning about biblical characters, accounts of Paul, and spiritual scholars. While some of the writing is fictional, it is inspired by historical biblical accounts. At first glance, this book appears to be a biographical account, but upon further reading, it becomes clear that it is more of a fictionally-inspired conversation.

World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger, is for those who profess a Christian belief and will undoubtedly find this book fascinating and thought-provoking. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in Biblical characters, accounts of Paul, and spiritual scholars.

World Upside Down, by Dr. Louis McCall, is, in the words of the author, a fictional account, taken from the King James Bible, of the story of the life of Apostle Paul. Since many of the characters herein actually lived and many of the events actually happened, I would prefer to call the book historical fiction. In spite of the religious persecution of the age, Paul has survived the reigns of Roman Emperors Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero. At the outset of the book, Nero is being held captive by Nero. His guard, Marcus, asks for the story of Paul's life, and Paul acquiesces. Paul, (named Saul at birth - the name Paul is the Romanized version) was formerly a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, a Jewish group that persecuted Christians. He relates to Marcus how he accidentally spread Christianity by trying to stamp it out and causing Christians to relocate. Paul converts to Christianity when he receives a visit, a light from heaven, in which he is driven blind. When the scales are removed from his eyes, Paul begins to preach about Christianity. He refers to himself as the "least of the Apostles", due to his prior lack of belief and his lack of courage in professing his faith. Paul survives several assassination plots, including a stoning, and lives long enough to complete three missionary journeys. Thirteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are attributed to Paul.

This book tells an important story of a momentous time in history. It is clearly and directly written and understandable to the reader, regardless of religious affiliation.

"World Upside Down" offers a compelling historical fiction account of the Apostle Paul's life and ministry. Louis McCall masterfully weaves biblical accounts with historical context to bring Paul's extraordinary journey from persecutor to persecuted apostle vividly to life.
The book's greatest strength lies in its rich historical detail, enhanced by McCall's extensive diplomatic experience and travels throughout the regions Paul visited. The inclusion of contemporary photographs of ancient sites adds valuable context and helps readers visualize the settings.
McCall skillfully portrays Paul's theological development and the challenges he faced in spreading Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. The narrative particularly shines in depicting Paul's conflicts with both Jewish authorities and Roman power structures, culminating in his powerful testimony before Nero.
The book's final chapters, depicting Paul and Peter's last days in Rome, are especially moving. McCall effectively captures their unwavering faith even in the face of martyrdom.
While occasionally the theological discussions can be dense for casual readers, they remain essential to understanding Paul's mission and message.
Recommended for readers interested in early Christian history, biblical studies, or anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how Christianity spread throughout the ancient world. McCall's scholarly background combined with his storytelling ability makes this both an informative and engaging read.

Written in a casual conversational tone, The World Upside Down is a recounting of Paul's life from the beginning of his ministry to the time of his death. Set during Paul's second and final imprisonment, Marcus, a curious Roman soldier sets himself up as Paul's permanent guard so that he might learn from the apostle whose words have changed several of his soldier companion's lives. It is through this questioning and eagerness to listen that Paul gradually reveals the story of his own life.

The writing is very straight forward and easy to read. Inserts from the letters from Paul to the various churches he helped form, along with pictures taken at the sites where the action takes place, add to the authenticity of the narrative. Although the author states at the beginning that the characters in the work are fictional, Paul speaks with zeal and conviction and emerges as rounded individual. We are also presented with glimpses of the other apostles as Paul interacts with them.

I would love to have heard more of the voice of Marcus as he listened and asked questions to add to the conversational tone, but overall, I found this a lovely read. At approximately 100 pages, the story imparts the life of the saint without becoming tedious. I recommend this to anyone who wishes to learn more of the the life of Paul in an easily digestible format.

World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger by Louis McCall, while fiction, is written like the Apostle Paul’s memoir. Its conversational tone and easy-to-read format filled with Paul’s words from the Bible are paired with interesting historic tidbits garnered from reliable sources regarding times and places visited on his missionary journeys. I think one of the things that makes this account come to life is McCall’s extensive travel in the region. His experiential knowledge adds the magic that comes from firsthand familiarity.

With all that said, while the book reads like a biographical account, it is not. It is fictional but “based on a true story.” As a person who has studied the Bible for more than 40 years, I gained new historical insights into what Paul experienced on his travels and found no errors in things attributed to Paul’s words.

I recommend World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger for readers who enjoy biblical history and those interested in learning more about the life of the Apostle Paul and his journeys. I’m happy to give this book 5 stars.

As BookHookup, I am a longtime book reviewer. I received a free review copy of this book from BookTasters and have not received compensation for reviewing or recommending it.

Come and sit with Paul and his prison guard, as he relays his story of how God changed his life. This book takes us through all of Paul's writings: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon in a more personal way, from the eyes of Paul. There are many interesting facts that you can learn, that cannot be gleaned from just reading the Bible. This deep dive helped me realize that Peter and Paul were both executed on the same day, by Nero, and that they continued to preach and change the hearts of many ,even while imprisoned. There are even photographs taken by the author of his trips to the Holy Land that bring more historical accuracy into play. For those who feel that the Bible is a bunch of fairy tales, and fiction, this is a reminder that it is not. There are so many historical facts that cannot be denied within this book. Jesus is the Son of God, and HE can change even those with hardened hearts thanks to those, such as Peter and Paul, who continued to spread God's word and Jesus's teachings.

I enjoyed World Upside Down immensely. I felt it accurately and thoroughly walked the reader through Paul’s conversion and life in an easy and enjoyable format. It is a work of fiction as the author takes some creative liberties in filling the gaps and in some conversations, but it was very interesting to walk through a succinct tale of Paul’s life.

Summary: During his imprisonment awaiting trial, Paul speaks to a young soldier named Marcus who asks to hear his story. Paul tells of his conversion and his missionary journeys, including different letters he wrote to the churches. The story follows Paul from imprisonment to his stand before Nero and his execution.

I liked this book because it was an excellent timeline of Paul’s Christian life that included when and to whom he wrote each epistle. At times the dialogue felt stilted and awkward, but that’s largely readers preference. I would have liked that the language not switch between Bible-ish and modern vernacular so much, but that’s okay.

This would be a really great book to give new believers who are learning about church history or for teenagers/youth groups.

World Upside down is a powerful, easy to read recount of the life of Paul through a first person POV. As a believer, it felt like a great summation of the greater part of the New Testament, from the book of Acts where he had his encounter on his way to Damascus, through the many letters he wrote to the different churches he planted. Louis humanises the apostle in a way we often forget to do when we read these stories through the scriptures. You're net with a man, fully sold out to the gospel of Christ who revealed himself. Paul's path was different from the onset, and he bravely embraced it. This book indeed opens our eyes to the upside down world The Way of Yeshua offers and how gruesome and utterly beautiful it can be.

Great retelling

This book recounts and portrays events from the Scripture in a captivating dialogue-like story. I commend the author for this idea, because the original text might be difficult to comprehend or even off-putting for some people. I don't feel that much was added to the original message, except perhaps more clarity.

I also liked how it was written and structured, the supporting character Marcus and the pictures of historical sites throughout the book.

I recommend it to everyone, believer or not, who is curious about the Scripture, is looking for a retelling thereof or is simply passionate about history and/or religion.

I have received this book through the kindness of the author via Booktasters, in exchange for my honest opinion on it.

This book is all about the story written by author in the name of Paul. Paul is God’s messenger going around the places to get exact condition about God’s belief in people’s mindset. With the writing style, it says that the author has read bible many times and has understood clearly how that can be put in words accordingly. Paul’s life has been really beautiful as he worked really hard to establish God’s existence by helping in building a church. Well written by the author.

This didn't take long to read, it was a fairly short read. In spite of that, it was quite an uplifting read. It was interesting and thought-provoking, and it was the type of story that I think we could learn something from, take something away from. I think this book, and the story within it, may be meaningful to many people.

Louis McCall successfully takes on the challenge of telling the Apostle Paul’s ‘upside down’ story, a story that made no sense to the people of his day.

Louis attempts to help the reader make sense of Paul, his life, his choices, and his experiences with a unique literary license that remains true to the holy scriptures yet provides insight into what the Apostle was thinking and experiencing.

Louis demonstrates a well-seasoned life of professorship and a long and full political career. Experience Paul through a seasoned lens that helps us to understand God’s plan of love, grace, and mercy to a broken, needy, and desperate world.

What I appreciated most about World Upside Down is that the author, Louis McCall has taken the history, story, and theology of the Apostle Paul and the early church and presented it to readers in an authentic, interesting, and creative way in a public that is fast losing the knowledge of the Word of God.

The author brings Paul’s magnanimous life to a level we all can understand and relate to. The creative dialogues will keep you engaged and transport you to the beginnings of the “followers of The Way.”

It's also great to highlight that the themes of grace, righteousness, community, and perseverance are brilliantly captured throughout the narratives. You will appreciate this concise book if you want a fresh understanding of Paul.

The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger for readers who enjoy biblical history and those interested in learning more about the life of the Apostle Paul and his journeys.

I’m happy to give this book 5 stars.
