Takumi wraca do szkolnej codzienności, nie zdając sobie do końca sprawy, jak bardzo namieszał swoimi wakacyjnymi wyczynami w 86. Tymczasem Red Sunsi postanawiają z powrotem zacząć rzucać wyzwania okolicznym ścigantom, by urzeczywistnić plan Ryosuke i stać się najsilniejszym teamem w rejonie Kanto. Shuichi Shigeno (Japanese author profile: しげの秀一) is a manga artist, best known for the manga series Initial D. Shigeno has also created Bari Bari Densetsu, Dopkan, and Tunnel Nuketara Sky Blue ("First Love in Summer") all prior to the manga that would make him famous in 1995. In 1985, he received the Kodansha Manga Award in shōnen for Bari Bari Densetsu.
I’m realising that the covers for these two-in-one omnibuses from Kodansha are one volume behind haha. This cover would’ve been better for the last volume considering the Sileighty didn’t even appear at all this volume. Not a big deal, just kinda nit-picky from me ig.
Anyway, this volume was another slapper. I kinda like seeing the other drivers who aren’t Takumi race - I hope there’s a few races that can involve the other Akagi guys in the future, despite how they’re not as good at driving as Takumi. Maybe after a time-skip at some point?
Although I’m not big on cars irl, seeing people race and talk about cars so passionately in this series is fun. Makes me want to out and drift even though I’d be too scared to irl haha
This has more of the racing action the previous volumes had, and the stakes are climbing up once again. It's more of the same but that is okay because it is what you're reading this manga for. My only complaint is some of the interpersonal drama from the earlier volumes feels absent here, and it is a bit of a drag because I think it balanced out the racing set pieces. However, towards the end of the volume some implications are made about the main character that suggests some serious growth, which is very much needed. We'll see how it plays it out when the nest Omnibus drops.
This is peak Initial D - intergenerational racing wisdom, inter-prefecture racing clubs, a focus on technique and philosophy, and that big cliffhanger at the end.
This omnibus volume has the advantage of focusing on the best part of the series, the cars and the racing. They are driving so fast that they manage to outrun the misogyny of prior volumes. The larger page size makes all the difference. The car art is perfectly detailed and carries this series. The new translation is good too—the names in Tokyopop’s release were very annoying. Again, if racing is your jam this is a far better outlet than revving your engine at the next red light. I also recommend the sequel series MF Ghost.
A new outside comes to Gunma to upset the status quo. This is a pretty action packed volume with two races and the start of a third. We start to get the hints at a new level up coming for the 86. Great stuff. The additional translation notes that are added to this new version really do a great job of explaining some of the nuances.
Story continues to gain traction, however I do feel as though the chapter count really isn’t warranted. Looking at where I am and what I have got left to read I really don’t know how much more of this I really need. Feels so much like fist of the North Star, just a story that continues endlessly.
