Be One: Finding Christlike Unity in a Fractured World

Rate this book
We live in a world of radical individualism, where people care more about satisfying their own needs than they do about the needs of others. This mindset can lead to broken relationships—both human and divine. This is the polar opposite of what those in the City of Enoch experienced. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to feel that kind of Christ-like unity? Would you like to feel closer to the Lord, heal a relationship, or forgive those who have wronged you? The principles in this book will help you along this journey toward oneness.

In the final moments of Christ’s life on earth, He uttered one last prayer. He did not pray for Himself but for His disciples—all of us, you and me. What was His plea? What was his final desire? That we might all become one. By offering gospel-centered approaches, this book will help you fulfill Christ’s final plea. You will learn not only how you can improve a relationship, but how to “be one” with Christ and His followers.

This is a beautiful book laid out like a manual. I found value in his HEART method. I'm left with the feeling that I can take a more thorough approach in my study of the Savior to be more like Him.

I received an ARC from the publisher and the thoughts are my own.

One of the book's strengths is its use of personal experience to connect with readers. The recounting of a family visit to the Garden of Gethsemane adds a poignant, personal touch. This anecdote not only enriches the narrative but also serves as a powerful reminder of Christ's ultimate sacrifice and His prayer for unity among His followers.

The discussion of Christ's intercessory prayer in John 17 is particularly impactful. It underscores the profound nature of the oneness that Christ desires for His followers—a oneness that mirrors His relationship with the Father. This section beautifully ties the concept of atonement to the idea of unity, suggesting that true oneness can only be achieved through accepting Christ's atonement.

The book also addresses the practical aspects of achieving oneness in everyday life. It poses reflective questions on how individuals can become one with God, their spouses, children, and friends. This practical approach makes the lofty concept of oneness more accessible and relatable.

Furthermore, the book highlights the importance of understanding the true nature of the Godhead, as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith. This understanding is presented as foundational to achieving oneness, as it provides a model for unity among distinct beings.

The concluding sections emphasize the lifelong nature of the journey toward oneness. The book encourages readers to continually strive for unity, suggesting that this effort transforms individuals, making them more open, compassionate, and understanding. The notion of "compassionate imagination" is introduced as a key element in achieving oneness, further enriching the book's insights.

Overall, "Becoming One" is a thoughtful and moving exploration of unity from a religious perspective. It effectively combines scriptural teachings, personal experiences, and practical advice to convey the profound importance of oneness in both spiritual and everyday contexts.

I received this book as an ARC the opinions expressed are my own.

The author poses a vital question: How can we “be one” as the Savior has asked us to -become one with Savior, spouse, family, friends? He uses the “HEART” approach: Hear Him; Envision oneness and Christlike unity; Act in faith; Recognize the hand of God; Thank the Lord for His Blessings. Interspersed throughout the book as he expanded on those principles were wonderful chapters on Knowing We are Essential; Changing our Desires; Examining our Motives. He discusses subjects like cognitive rigidity, cognitive dissonance and one I especially liked: contrecoeur (going against our own heart and desire.) I loved the chapter on Take Joy in Freuden-freude! A few more chapter headings to give you a tiny taste of the magnitude of wonderful things the author covers with stories and examples: Believe that with God Nothing is Impossible! Remember the Magic Word: Yet (that was a great one). Overcome Differences with Compassion; Christlike Unity; Forgive the Unforgivable. I highly recommend this book for its great spiritual uplift and reminders of where our power lies in following the pleading of the Savior to “Become One” with such beautiful examples and reminders of how we can accomplish this essential task. I received an ARC copy from Cedar Fort – Thank you, Cedar Fort! I would not have discovered this beautiful reminder and “instruction manual” on this vital subject. As is quite apparent from the scatterbrained approach, these thoughts are my own

I love the many insights, life experiences, quotes & scriptures in this book that give us a greater glimpse into Christ's admonition to the Saints to "Be one" & to be united in purpose and in love. Some of the important things I took from this book include the importance of loving others. When we are so focused on ourselves & our own salvation, we are limited in our scope, but when we love others and seek to be united in following Christ & caring for each other, our efforts are magnified. One of my favorite statements in this book is the concept of the "magic word: yet." For example, "Things are not how I'd like them to be...yet." Adding that "yet" to our thoughts helps us act in faith and have a growth mindset.

Cedar Fort Publishing sent me an arc e-book to read & review. All thoughts & opinions expressed here are my own.

Help in becoming more like Jesus Christ!

This is a great book to help us understand that there are many ways to become like Jesus, and gives a number of examples.

As we strive to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and learn how to see each other as He sees us, it helps us to become more like him.

I learned and gained many things from reading this book and I think you will also.
