I found this to be a highly enjoyable & satisfying Recency romance novel with memorable and likable characters. Although the hero, Lord Bain, has the reputation as a rough sort, the reader is assured that he is honorable and thus worthy of the name "hero" (as the male love interest is referred to in the romance genre). The heroine, Gillian Ashley, is headstrong, which may be uncharacteristic of young women in that era, but such strength and determination is preferable to reading about a woman who lacks such a will and lets others take advantage of her. This novel was a quick read, a real page turner despite having a relatively simple storyline. This was Margaret Summerville's first Signet Regency (she had previously written a few Regencies for Dell's Candlelight series) and I very much look forward to reading more of her novels.

Gillian claims to be a virtuous young lady, but alas she's a hot mess. Disobeying Lady Meg to meet her rakish father who is shunned by society and associating with the lower classes. It's a wonder she is accepted into polite society when she's forever running off and doing the opposite of what she's told. Just ok.
