Rate this book
Professor Kevin Michaels has returned to the picturesque town of New Polk to fill a teaching position at the local university and a long-held ambition: to revive interest in the town's most illustrious citizen, author Eileen Connel, and her neglected masterpiece, "Season of Witches". But first he must uncover the horror locked away inside the old woman's failing mind - a horror that had its birth one tragic Halloween night over forty years ago. Now, as October once again returns to upstate New York, so does a species of evil so monstrously alien it can only wear a human mask...

What starts as a rich, haunting tale evoking rural horrors touched with melancholic dread funnels downwards into a pulptastic, juvenille novel. The opening sequence of a Halloween party turned inferno is as taut as it is tense, but when Sarrantonio introduces a teenager character, Davey, and his overweight friend, Buddy, it feels like we're lost in the cliche world somewhere between Ray Bradbury and the Andy Griffith Show. The dialogue suffers and so does the storytelling. However, when the novel takes turns into science fiction (an otherworldly serial killer seeking world domination, re: 'The Hidden') one can't help ride the purple prose and enjoy 'October' for what it is. One thing, Sarrantonio piles up the body count without remorse. This, just like Sarrantonio's 'The Boy with the Penny Eyes', is uneven, wild, stupid, yet highly readable 1980s horror pulp.

Great characterization to a so-so plot.
UPDATE: Added a star as the book stayed with me for days. Found myself recalling it many a time. It's a subtle novel but with big consequences. Will probably write a full review one of these days.

WOW. Wish I could give it six stars. Love it when a book carries me away in a matter of days...
