Jordan Holbrook is the single mother of a five-year-old daughter. She’s just inherited her Grandmother’s house in South Florida where she’s hiding from an abusive ex-husband who’s been released from prison early. A new man in her life isn't part of her plans. Connor McCrae is a handyman who lives out of his van. He walked away from a privileged life and loving family after being badly scarred in a vicious attack. He doesn't believe a woman’s love is in the cards for him. What brings them together is a rundown house, a mutual attraction, and a Common Enemy. Bobby Ray Butler is cutting a path of murder and mayhem through south Florida in his quest for vengeance. His sights are set on his ex-wife and anyone who gets in his way.
From childhood I've moved from place to place, from Indiana to Florida, stopping in several places in between. I also moved from job to job; as a waitress, soldier, retail manager, dental assistant, etc.. The one thing I never had to leave behind was my imagination. Storytelling has always been my favorite way to pass time. I've often been told I should write a book. Finally, I did. It was so much fun: I feel I must write more. I've been a student of Long Ridge Writers Group and once won a short story contest with Harlequin. I currently live in north Florida with my husband, whom I torture with crazy story lines and half written manuscripts. He has put up with me for thirty-plus years.
Jordan Holbrook and her daughter, Lizzie, moved to her grandmother's house in Florida but the old house is run down and a friend recommends Connor McCrae to help fix it up. Connor is scarred and lives out of his van. He avoids most people because of his looks but Jordan and Lizzie accept him. Meanwhile, Jordan's ex-husband is getting out of prison and Jordan is afraid he will come for her.
It was a pretty good story but it lacked something. Not sure what though. The characters were likable and Lizzie was a darling and the pace of the story moved at a decent pace, only lagging a small bit in my opinion. The style was good too. Maybe it was the "chemistry" of the couple. Not entirely convincing to me.
Story was disjointed, pace dragged, then moved quickly. Some frustrating things, especially with timelines. Some of the characters went from being obnoxious to suddenly sorry and loving. Just not very well told story.
The story is good with lots of believable characters and some you'd rather not believe. A little too bloody for me at times but 5 stars of you like bloody.
What an edge-of-your-seat thriller. The story is set up so well with the first part exploring the building relationship between Connor and Jordan and their journey helping to heal both of their tragic pasts. The second part is their fight to get free of their 'common enemy,' Bobby Ray Butler.
They meet when Connor starts doing repairs for Jordan's house. She inherited it from her grandmother and she and her daughter Lizzie are going to live in it. Connor has been horrifically scarred by a vicious attack on him six years ago that has made him hide from the world because he feels like a monster. It isn't long before Jordan's kindness and acceptance of him makes him start to find his identity again and grow comfortable with it. We soon learn he isn't just the handyman living out of his van but was once a successful lawyer.
It's about then we meet Connor's "team" who worked with him before his accident including his twin brother Cal. And they begin to help Jordan and Connor fight their evil enemy.
Jordan was nothing short of terrorized by her ex-husband and Connor helps her heal from the abuse she suffered, while protecting her and her daughter against Bobby Ray in the present. Connor's lawyer skills are put to the test against Bobby Ray, over custody of Lizzie. The court scene was my favorite of the book. Connor was awesome!
Wow, was Bobby Ray Butler evil. He terrorized Jordan, and once released from prison almost every woman he met. He left a wake of destruction and as the book progressed the more evil he got. This romantic suspense kept me shocked by the crimes the villain committed. He was SO bad, but honestly, he kept me glued to the pages to see what he'd do next.
Common Enemy by Sandra Dailey was an ok read. A little predictable if you ask me.

I liked this book. Found some of the ideas lacking but enjoyed the build up in the relationship, not just with the H and h but also the little one. Enjoyed the slow building of trust, warmth, affection and love.
I really enjoyed this book. The hero and heroine are well developed and must work together to overcome their deep wounds as they face a vicious adversary determined to destroy them. The author builds the suspense beginning with the first page making this book impossible to put down.
