In the 21st century it’s really unacceptable for students not to make progress at a reasonable rate when instructors and students could benefit from what science has uncovered about learning. Modernizing Approaches to Learning discusses research related to the brain as the gateway to learning. The author discussed findings from neuroscience, cognitive science, physiological and psychological research into the brain and learning. He offers practical, modern ways to move away from damaging educational approaches and toward emotionally safe, self-discovery and self-reliance approaches that join the art of teaching with the science of learning thereby improving students’ learning and retention potential.

The brain is the gateway to learning; by having insights into its connection to the nature of learning students learn faster and retain information longer. That form follows function is a universally accepted principle. The function of approaches to learning is to give students the best opportunity (form) to gain and experience meaningful long-term learning and develop know-how skills.

Essentially a book of quotations. It is not very well written although the ideas about learning which come from brain research are intriguing and make me want to read more. This book certainly made me think about the ways that I run my classroom.

Horribly edited. The only clever wording was "Bozo Sapiens."
