DC's Spring Breakout! (2024) #1

Rate this book
Spring has sprung! Flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing, Harley is breaking King Shark out of Belle Reve prison…all is right in the DCU as both heroes and villains face all sorts of different spring breaks. Breaking out of a coffin? Lex Luthor has that covered. Spring break training? Send in Superman! Breaking out of your shell? Batman and Mr. Freeze explore that possibility through a connection in their shared past. Breaking down a worthy adversary? Katana and her sword of souls might just be able to tackle that. And it wouldn’t be a spring break without a Teen Titans beach trip! All these and more in DC’s Spring Breakout!—eight breakout stories to put a spring in your step (is there a zit breakout story? You’ll have to read to find out!)

Pretty darned good overall. High marks for Harley, Katana, and Martian Manhunter stories. And Superman at the end for a great opening day story. Good stuff.

DC’s Spring Breakout #1 is a collection of short stories written by Joey Esposito, Thomas Krajewski, Meghan Fitzmartin, James Reid, Mike Barr, Patrick Young, Morgan Hampton, and Cameron Chittock.

The collection includes stories with Harley Quinn breaking King Shark out of Belle Reve for his birthday, Batman battling Mister Freeze on the ballroom dance floor, the Teen Titans taking some time off at the beach for team building, the Metal Men searching for a missing AI at a beach party, Katana fighting demons, Lex Luthor being buried alive, Martian Manhunter enjoying Shakespeare in the Park, and Superman taking in a baseball game.

There are some fun stories in this collection with my favorites being the Harley/King Shark, Batman, and Superman stories. I think the Katana story was the weakest followed closely by Lex Luthor’s. Some of the stories had definite Spring theme tie-ins while others were a bit of a stretch. The art in all of the stories were really good. All-in-all, this is a fun book, but not worth the $9.99 price tag.

The stories where kinda meh, I really liked the Martian Manhunter bit and Kal'el's appearance in Nanaue's story though.

The best stories: Harley and Nanaue, Martian ManHunter, Teen Titans
All the other ones were alright, expect for Katana’s. I know nothing about her backstory so I was EXTREMELY confused.

Some of the stories were good, like the first one with Harley and King Shark, but there was a lot of mediocre ones as well
