My brother's best friend brought me back, but nothing was the same. I can't remember what happened. My parents dragged me away from my island home in the name of keeping me safe, and thrust me into hell instead.
I came back to Hatterwick to rebuild my life and--hopefully--my memory.
Now a new inheritance threatens to expose those long buried secrets, and someone will stop at nothing to ensure I never remember what really happened that fateful night.
The only thing standing between me and whoever wants to hurt me is a marriage of protection with the boy who saved me--now a man grown and determined to keep me safe at all costs.
But what began as protection turns into more. Because he's the key to unlocking what hides in the shadows of my mind, which will either save or damn us both.
Harper Jackson has rescued her co-workers from a hostage situation, battled ninjas, and stopped international espionage—in her head anyway. Now that she’s no longer busy devising ways to make staff meetings more entertaining, she’s pouring that imagination into tales of breath-stealing, small-town romantic suspense. She believes that peach cobbler with ice cream is the best dessert ever and has a black belt in taekwondo to back it up. She lives in the Deep South with her husband and three canine furbabies.

First book I have read by Harper Jackson and it totally pulled me under its spell! Great characters, suspense and slow growing romance. Willa and Sawyer grew up together on a small island off the Outer Banks in N.C. He was her brother’s best friend, and Willa always tagged along. Until a near tragedy changed their lives.
A very enjoyable book, no cliff hangers, and I read there is a second in the series next spring. Can’t wait!
This is the first full book, following the prequel, in the Wayward Sons series, and it doesn’t disappoint. Sawyer Malone returns home to Hatterwick Island, NC from the Navy following an injury. He’s returned at the request of his fellow Wayward Son, Jace. Jace is on a secret mission and needs Sawyer to stand in for him at his grandfather’s funeral, to lend support to his little sister, Willa, and she needs it. Sawyer and Willa share a history together, and it doesn’t take them long to return to the connection they had when they were younger.
There’s a lot packed into this book, and it’s all presented well. It’s a marriage of convenience/forced proximity trope coupled with mystery/suspense. There’s also an element of hidden love mixed with misunderstanding. And still hanging over them is what happened to Willa and to her friend Gwen all those years ago.
There’s so much to love and enjoy in this book. Willa and Sawyer are adorable, alone and together. I though Mimi and Mama Flo were remarkable, and I want people like them in my life. Jace isn’t in the book for long, but he proves a valuable asset and provides important information to solving the mystery. Then there’s the tech guy, Dax, and he presents remarkable skills. If all that's not enough, Roy and Triton add a great touch to this book.
This book can stand on it’s own. While reading the prequel to this series isn’t necessary, it could be helpful for the reader. It could help in understanding character backgrounds and how they’re connected.
As ususal, the author hits the mark with this book. It will keep you turning pages, and the ending will keep you biting your nails. I eagerly anticipate the next book in this series.
I highly recommend this book.
I received and advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
This was my first Harper Jackson book. To be honest the cover seemed a bit cheesy, so was hesitant to read. I was intrigued by the summary and enjoy listening to Ryan West.
Won’t Back Down ended up totally drawing me in. I absolutely did not guess what direction this was going to go.
I loved the brother’s best friend, childhood crush storyline. Sawyer and Willa are darling together. The angst is minimal and they communicate well.
There are so many unique facets to Willa’s storyline. Her drowning, leaving town, connection to wild horses and Saywer. I loved the moment when the lawyer puts her horrible parents in their place, via a letter from her grandfather. It was just too good.
I’m absolutely looking forward to reading more of Wayward Boys series. I am hooked and the mystery with a bit of romance.
Love, love, love, love it! This one had me hooked. Murder mystery meets marriage of convenience with an off-limits little sister twist? Say less. The tension, the secrets, the slow-burn build… it all just works. I was fully invested and did NOT see some of those turns coming. 🔥
The narrators were 100% on their game, they really brought the chemistry to life.
If you liked Listen for the Lie, Strangers in the Woods, or even Torn, I think you’ll love this one. Thank you @netgalley for the ALC in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait to read Harper’s next!
I received this ARC from Catherine Cowles’ Facebook group.
The story had great potential, but it fell a bit short for me. The suspense build up was a bit lacking for me as well as the court case debacle. I would’ve loved more story and relationship development, more on Sawyer’s background, and maybe better dialogue? It really bothered me that the doctor of the group used the term “shocky” lol. I imagine it was maybe explained in the first book (book #0?), but I have no idea what “Wayward Sons” are besides this group of guys who grew up together. Some background on that would be great for future books just in case someone doesn’t read the previous books. There was just a disconnect and I didn’t fall in love with the MCs unfortunately.
I do appreciate the opportunity to provide an honest review 🤍
- brother's best friend - marriage of convenience - small town romance - found family
Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect going into Won't Back Down, as this is my first book by Harper Jackson and I'm not too big on romantic suspense novels, but this was fantastic. Willa and Sawyer's story was super sweet, and the mystery of what happened to Willa and why kept me hooked. Plus the ending (and bad guy) was who I least expected!
Can't wait for more of this series!
CW: mentions of drowning, FMC has PTSD, on page panic attacks, death of a loved one, murder, kidnapping
I’m not generally a fan of the brother’s best friend trope, but the author didn’t take it the usual route here and I really loved that.
As for the rest of the story, I’m not sure why the author (who usually writes as Kait Nolan) felt she needed a new alter ego for these “suspense” stories. I didn’t find the story all that more suspenseful than her other books. But I still enjoyed it. And I’m looking forward to more books in this series.
Reading Journal Details Book:Won't Back Down by Harper Jackson Format: Audiobook (9 hours 58 minutes) My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
Quick Take A well balanced romantic suspense that splits its focus between relationship depth and mystery, pairing a lived-in friends-to-lovers bond with a slow building, atmospheric payoff.
Full Review This ended up being one of those reads where the emotional core and the unfolding mystery feel evenly matched throughout. From the moment Willa and Sawyer are on page together, their bond feels particularly lived-in rather than manufactured or forced.
The friends-to-lovers trope works especially well here because of the history between the two; the long time crushes, the mutual obliviousness, and the sense that everyone else already sees what they don't. It creates a foundation that makes their connection feel believable right from the gate, which is something this trope doesn't always nail.
The setting also did a lot of heavy lifting for me. Hatterwick Island has that cozy, close knit small town feel where you can picture every corner of it, but there's still an undercurrent of something unresolved beneath the surface.
Pair that with Willa's missing memory and the lingering trauma tied to her past, and it gives the story a strong atmospheric anchor. I also really enjoyed the found family elements, the relationship between Sawyer, Willa, her brother, and the broader community added warmth that balanced the heavier themes nicely.
And as always, animals are an instant win with me. Roy especially stood out, not just as a companion, but as a true emotional and medical support presence. That layer felt authentic and added a level of protection and care around Willa that made her journey feel more grounded. Between Roy, Sawyer, and even the quieter moments with the horses, there's a constant thread of comfort and safety woven throughout the story.
Where the book softens slightly is in the suspense pacing. The mystery is there, but it builds gradually rather than maintaining a steady level of tension throughout. It felt a little like a pot of water slowly heating on the stove—calm at first, then simmering, before eventually reaching a rolling boil. It gets there, but it takes its time.
The marriage-of-protection trope was another element that gave me pause early on. It felt a little convenient and somewhat rushed at first, which briefly pulled me out of the story. That said, the established history between Willa and Sawyer does a lot to smooth that over as things progress, and it never fully tips into feeling like a shortcut or copout. If anything, the groundwork laid beforehand is what keeps it from falling into that trap.
Overall, this strikes a strong balance between romance and suspense, leaning on the emotional connection and the mystery to carry the story forward. I found myself invested in the characters, the setting, and the relationships enough that the slower building tension didn't detract from the experience for me. It's a solid start to the series, and I can absolutely see myself continuing with the Wayward Sons.
Would Recommend If... Won't Back Down is a solid option if you enjoy romantic suspense that balances relationship depth with mystery, set against a cozy small town backdrop with a slower-building payoff.
Advance Copy Provided By Thank you Victory Editing and NetGalley for this advance listen. This was a great example of how romance and mystery can share equal footing while still delivering a satisfying emotional payoff.
If you love romantic suspense with unpredictable twists and a villain you won't see coming, Wayward Sons is the series for you!
Three chapters in, I decided to pause and read the prequel first--and I'm so glad I did! While this can be read as a stand alone, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and family dynamics on a deeper level. I devoured Smoke on the Water in audio format, then eagerly returned to this one.
Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and this book delivers it perfectly. The underlying mystery woven throughout the series keeps you hooked, offering just enough breadcrumbs to make you crave more. I'm counting down the days until All Along the Watchtower releases in April.
The story of childhood friends entering a marriage of convenience while unraveling the truth behind her near-drowning had me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
Annotating the paperback while listening to the audiobook made the experience even more immersive, and time flew by faster than I wanted. This cleverly woven tale will leave you questioning everyone's motives, and I loved every minute of it!Harper Jackson is my new auto-buy author!

Won't Back Down is a gently thrilling brother's-best-friend romantic suspense. Harper Jackson creates this charming and idyllic small island town with interesting characters coupled with an intriguing underline plot that is sure to draw this series to a gratifying conclusion. Jackson's writing is clear and descriptive, transporting me to the charm of this community, her pacing helps to create the charm of this town and its people and then ramps up as the reader starts to unravel more of the threads to draw us to the ultimate conclusion. Jackson's characters are interesting and the reader can easily establish the friend/found family group that is going to hold this series together, and we become attached to each of them as we grow fond of this community and what might happen to it.
Won't Back Down centers around Willa and Sawyer. I found their friends to lovers, marriage of convenience romance to be on the gentler side. Their romance was soft, built from respect and trust, and smoothly settled into place. The focus of their story then became more driven from outside plot sources and helping to further establish their friend group and the over arching plot thread that is sure to drive this series. The spice/heat level of this novel is also on the lower end, so if you like a gentle romance that is less focused on physical elements of the chemistry building you are sure to enjoy.
This is the first novel I have read from Harper Jackson and I found it to be a really lovely introduction to her tone and style. This romantic suspense felt like a really good starter/introduction to the genre. It deals with some deep topics, but the way Jackson approached them felt really relatable and was not steeped in the overly dark side of things.
I would definitely recommend this novel as a great intro to a new author or a great way to explore this sub-genre of romance. I am looking forward to seeing this series grow and the Wayward Sons all finding their HEAs!
Thank you so much to Harper Jackson for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book captured my attention and wouldn’t let go; I had to read it in a single sitting. After the first book, I knew I needed to know more about these Wayward Sons and the family they made out of each other. Now that the author has shown us more about what brought them together, I’m more curious than ever. The chemistry between Sawyer and Willa just crackled off the page, it hurt my heart to see all the doubt they held about one another. However, I adored witnessing these two turning the crushes they had so long ago into something real. And the answers that Willa had been searching for left me gaping. That was not at all how I thought that would turn out. I am desperate to know even more. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
This book is equal parts romance and suspense. The relationship is so darn sweet and low angst. The mystery/suspense aspect was very intriguing. I highly recommend this book!
💋 Kisses Only 🫑-🫑🫑🫑 Steamy/Closed Door 🌶️-🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spicy/Open Door
Won't Back Down is the start of a new series from Kait Nolan's other author name, Harper Jackson. It's a brother's best friend, secret crush, arranged/marriage of convenience romance set in a small town on the Outer Banks of NC, with a hefty dose of suspense mixed in.
The prologue takes place 12 years ago, the night Willa drowned and her heart stopped beating. She has huge gaps in her memory about that night. Now, she's estranged from her parents and has returned to Hatterwick to rebuild her life and hopefully reclaim her memories about the night that her brother's best friend, Sawyer, saved her life. They've always had a crush on each other, and now that they are in a marriage of convenience/protection, things progress to a bona fide relationship.
After some misunderstandings, Sawyer and Willa get on the same page, and I liked the progression of their relationship. The quest to find out what really happened the night Willa ended up in the water is full of twists and turns -- and I was happy that my suspicion about who was the bad guy was correct!
Having spent many summers on OBX, I kept imagining Cape Hatteras as the setting, since the town name, Hatterwick, is so similar! I'm still not sure why the group of friends consider themselves the "Wayward Sons," but I liked the relationship between the friend group, and how supportive they are of each other in this found family. I'd be interested to read the rest of the books in this series to learn more about the disappearance/murder that night of Willa's friend Gwen!
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
As someone who has fallen in love with the romance/suspense genre, I enjoyed reading "Won't Back Down" by Harper Jackson. The main characters were lovable (Although let's be real, her pittie Roy is my real favorite 😍), and the small town felt like a place I'd like to visit. Though, there wasn't a lot of connection with side characters, so I'm not sure how I feel about the rest of them.
This book centers around Willa and Sawyer, childhood friends/her brother's best friend. The two definitely have chemistry, and I appreciate the unique character that is Willa with her social anxiety. Sawyer is your typical MMC, although we get a little of his backstory.
Overall, would I recommend this as a fun read? Yes. However, I only gave this book 3 stars because the "suspense" bit was lacking with little to no build up, and while the end was a nice twist, it felt more like an afterthought. I would love to see more hints sprinkled through the next few books and get a little more than just the romance.
Thank you Harper Jackson for allowing me to be an ARC reader in return for my honest opinion
5 Star Review Won’t Back Down (Wayward Sons #1) by Harper Jackson
Harper Jackson is a relatively new author to me, but I have read numerous books by her alter ego Kait Nolan and loved them. I love stories set in small towns, such as Hatterwick, Outer Banks of North Carolina and this was an entertaining and well written story that drew me in and held me captive..
I really love romantic stories with an element of suspense and Won’t Back Down had a good balance of romance and suspense. The characters were easy to relate to, engaging and I found myself totally invested from the first chapter to the last.
I love found families and the Wayward Sons although not biologically brothers, are brothers in every other sense of the word. There were numerous twists and turns and I found myself riveted to Willa and Sawyer’s story. There were moments where I was on the edge of my seat whilst reading.
He saved her life when she was 16 and now when danger rears its head he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe again. The question is will he be able too?
Let me tell you, I read a lot of romantic suspense, it’s one of my favorite smutty genres. I can usually predict some of what’s going to happen, and while I did see a few of the twists and turns coming, the major one, the whodunit at the end was completely unexpected.
Harper did a really good job of writing the story to keep us guessing throughout, while not making us wait too long. I really enjoyed this book!
Won't Back Down by Harper Jackson is the best romantic suspense novel I've read all year. Her writing is so good I could feel everything that the female main character, Willa, was feeling, every step of the way. Well crafted, intriguing story that can be read as a standalone but the other novels in her Wayward Sons series add enhance the backstory. Sawyer is the perfect swoon worthy "handsome hero, older brother's best friend, childhood crush" who continues saving her life on multiple levels but Roy stole my heart!
I received an ARC through Catherine Cowles FB group. While I did enjoy the story there were several spelling errors and one chapter was titled Sawyer when it was Willa’s POV which was confusing at first. I also felt the ending was not wrapped up well. Not sure if I will continue this series or not.
Sawyer's back on the island after retiring from the Navy. His best friend Jace's little sister Willa is here, and he's determined to reconnect with her. They have a special bond, although they haven't seen much of each other since the time he rescued her all those years ago. But now he's back, and she needs help again. Sawyer will be the one to protect her, in every way, including a marriage of convenience to keep her horrible parents from taking advantage of her again. Throughout their journey, all those feelings will have to come out in some way, and so will her memories of that night.
Willa and and Sawyer are so freaking sweet together. He's such a protective, compassionate guy who had long loved Willa. Thank God he came back home and they finally got to admit their long held feelings. There's an overarching mystery and suspense that blend perfectly with their relationship, and I must admit I had absolutely no idea who the real villain was. The secondary cast is as interesting and lovable as Sawyer and Willa, and I'm eagerly waiting for all the Wayward Sons' stories to come.

My Review: Won't Back Down by Harper Jackson is associated with the Wayward Sons series. It was originally released in 2024. The audiobook edition is available now.
About the Book: "I drowned...
I came back...
The only thing standing between me and whoever wants to hurt me is a marriage of protection with the boy who saved me--now a man grown and determined to keep me safe at all costs."
In My Own Words: A woman who is traumatized and haunted by her past finds solace in the one man she has secretly loved and longed for since...
My Final Say: This story contained a story within a story. It was all about buried secrets, locked memories, shadows in the dark, and ghosts from the past. It definitely gave off an "enemy among us" vibe.
I was immediately drawn into this story. It was a whole thing. Also, the amnesia trope is one of my absolute favorites. The author did a fantastic job with the whole matter. It was believable and frustratingly accurate in the way that I like, evoking tension and tears, so to speak. (This can be incredibly challenging for some authors to nail.) Jackson wrote it in such a way that I could feel the character's anxiety and unrest. I was right there alongside her feeling all the feelings.
The more of this series that I am introduced to, the more I want to read. Every book has had its own unique story, while at the same time, each book has connected to the others in a way that draws interest so that you want to know the whole found family members and their stories even more.
About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Amy McFadden and Ryan West. The duo made for a wonderful listening experience.
Other: Readers, you want to get into this series! You will not be disappointed. Each novel can be read as a standalone. If you enjoy stories with found family brotherhoods, unsolved mysteries, and romances that come with a "love worth fighting for" component, this is what you want to read.
This one had me hooked from the start. Murder mystery meets marriage of convenience with an off-limits little sister twist? I’m in. The tension, the secrets, the slow-burn build—it all just hits. I was fully invested and definitely didn’t see some of those twists coming.
This is the first full-length installment in the Wayward Sons series (following the prequel), and it absolutely delivers. Sawyer Malone returns to Hatterwick Island, NC after a Navy injury, answering a call from his friend and fellow Wayward Son, Jace. With Jace tied up in a secret mission, Sawyer steps in to attend his grandfather’s funeral—and more importantly, to support Jace’s younger sister, Willa… who just so happens to be Sawyer’s former almost-something.
Willa and Sawyer share a complicated past, and it doesn’t take long for old feelings to resurface. What follows is a perfect storm of forced proximity, a marriage of convenience, buried emotions, and lingering secrets—especially surrounding what happened to Willa and her friend Gwen years ago.
There’s a lot going on, but it’s woven together seamlessly. You get romance, suspense, hidden love, and just enough angst to keep the pages turning. Willa and Sawyer are equally lovable on their own, but together? The chemistry is undeniable.
Romantic suspense is seriously an underrated genre—and one of my absolute favorites. It’s that perfect blend of tension, danger, and chemistry that just keeps you glued to the story. The duet narration by Amy McFadden and Ryan West takes everything to another level. They fully become Willa and Sawyer, bringing out every bit of emotion, tension, and chemistry. Amy McFadden delivers Willa’s vulnerability and strength beautifully, while Ryan West brings Sawyer’s intensity and grit in a way that feels so authentic. Together, the duet format makes the story feel immersive and cinematic.
While this book stands strong on its own, reading the prequel could add some helpful context to the characters and their connections. Either way, this one is packed with heart, tension, and just the right amount of mystery to keep you hooked.
Thank you to Harper Jackson (Kait Nolan), Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op and NetGalley for the ALC.
This is the first book by Harper Jackson for me. I’m a huge fan of romantic suspense and she executed it brilliantly. It’s the perfect balance of romance and suspense.
The book centers on Willa and Sawyer. Willa has been back in her hometown for 10 years after escaping the control of her now estranged parents. She still suffers from high anxiety and too much ‘peopling’ but she is slowly gaining back control of her life and has found a way to give back to her community while grieving her grandfather’s recent death. Sawyer is now out of the service and back in town for her grandfather’s services. He saved her from drowning at 16, is Willa’s brother’s best friend and despite his attraction, he has always considered her off limits.
When Willa’s inheritance is threatened, they agree to marry to protect what’s rightfully hers. I really liked that there were no unnecessary miscommunications about what they both wanted out of this marriage. They realize their true feelings early and run with it. All the while, Willa is beginning to regain her memories that threaten to bring up secrets from her past and Sawyer vows to protect her no matter what. Willa may be viewed as weak by many on the outside, but with Sawyer’s support, she shows how strong she really is as the story develops. Sawyer is swoony as Willa’s protector and devoted husband.
This story has a little bit of everything. It’s military, brother’s best friend, marriage of convenience, second chance and found family. Harper Jackson has created a community of terrific characters, and they pull together to show family doesn’t have to be blood but what you make it. It’s one of my favorite tropes and I never get tired of it. The ‘mystery’ is solved, however there are a few questions left unanswered but not in a cliffhanger kind of way. In an intriguing way setting up the next in the series and I can’t wait to see what happens. I recommend this for anyone that’s a fan of romantic suspense. You won’t be disappointed.
There’s a bonus epilogue that is well worth signing up for the author’s newsletter.
This is a marriage of protection, small town, best friend's little sister, friends to lovers, romantic suspense with a protective, former military hero and strong found family vibes. I found this to have an interesting and engaging plot with an air of mystery and likable and relatable characters. As a North Carolinian, I also loved the setting of the fictional island of Hatterwick on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Admittedly in the beginning, I was a little miffed with Sawyer and Willa because they wouldn't just have a clear conversation about their feelings for one another. Thankfully, that frustration didn't last very long and soon they were on the same page with their relationship goals. I just love a good "it's always been you" microtrope and this one delivered there. The pacing here was good but you didn't get every single detail of every day. Sometimes days or weeks will have passed with little to no detail. This didn't really bother me but served to move the story and Willa and Sawyer's relationship along. I would have liked to have more details at times particularly about the past and Sawyer's military days and subsequent discharge. I also would have loved to see more of the Wayward Sons together in this one. You get a sense of their relationship but I would have liked to have seen more of it in action as I just love a good band of brothers story. Not only were you rooting for the main characters in this one but you also grew to love all the side characters and wanted to know more about their stories as well. The mystery kept me guessing and I didn't really suss out the bad guy in this one until the end. And while we did get a partial resolution to the mystery, there is still an overarching mystery at play that I suspect will continue throughout the series. Thankfully while there is still much to discover about the characters and mystery in this series, we did get an emotional and satisfying HEA for Willa and Sawyer.
Okay… I did NOT see that coming. I went into Won’t Back Down thinking I had it figured out. Brother’s best friend, marriage of convenience, small island secrets… I thought I knew the direction. I was wrong. Completely. This book just keeps building. One reveal after another, and just when you think you understand what happened that night… something shifts again. I was fully locked in trying to piece it together.
Willa and Sawyer had such a strong emotional core. The history between them, the protectiveness, the quiet “this has always been there” kind of connection… it worked so well. Their relationship felt natural and steady, not overly dramatic, which I actually loved because it grounded everything else happening around them.
And Sawyer? The devotion. The “I will literally stand between you and anything that tries to hurt you” energy. Say less.
The marriage of convenience trope really worked here because it wasn’t just about romance, it felt necessary. There were real stakes tied to it, which made their dynamic even more compelling. Also, Willa's parents really brought some emotional memories from my own life, so that hit me hard, I love when a book does that!
I also loved the setting. That small island, everyone knows everyone, secrets don’t stay buried forever kind of vibe. It added so much to the suspense and made everything feel a little more intense.
The audiobook narration by Amy McFadden and Ryan West pulled me in even more. Dual POV always hits, and they both did a great job bringing out the emotion and tension in the story.
If I had to nitpick, I would’ve loved just a little more depth in a few of the bigger reveals, but honestly, I was so entertained the entire time it didn’t take away much for me. This is such a solid mix of romance and suspense. Not super dark, but enough tension to keep you guessing, and characters you actually care about.
And now I’m sitting here needing the next book immediately because I have questions.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the audiobook ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Some books you read for the escape of it all. Something you can sink into, be transported, and find a satisfying plot with just enough tension (sexual, and otherwise), to keep you captivated and turning pages because you care about what happens next. If that's you, I have to say, Won't Back Down by Harper Jackson might be one of the best options out there. It's romantic without being cheesy, suspenseful without being scary, and wholesome enough to keep it endearing. And man...it's just a good daggum story!
After losing her grandparents in quick succession, the only family she's able to rely on anymore besides her brother, currently deployed in the Navy, Willa's steady, reliable world is changing. Maybe once upon a time that wouldn't have been a big deal, but now, she has enough psychological damage to deal with.
When she was a teenager, she drowned. Actually, fully drowned. But she was saved by her brother's best friend, Sawyer. She has a lot of lost memories from around that time, and intense trauma from the years afterwards. She avoids thinking about any of that stuff at all. But now Sawyer is back on island, come home from his own stint in the Navy, and he's there to help her cope, in any way he can. Emotionally, physically...legally.
Gosh darn it, this book got me. It is jam packed with all the good stuff, as I mentioned before. The sexual tension is present and done so well. The mystery elements are executed to perfection. There are lots of side characters I'm sure have and will pop up in other books in the same series (which I need to get my hands on immediately). It's everything you want in this kind of book, which I like to call 'candy'. The kind that just hits the spot. Refreshing, in many ways. Delicious!
Note:: I received an early copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
There's plenty of mystery and suspense in this friends to lovers romance. Of the dozens of books I read each year, seldom do I find one that captures my emotions like Won't Back Down. The story even brought me to tears at one point. Honestly, it's that good!
Here's a brief introduction to the plot. Twelve years ago, teenager Willa (our heroine) nearly drowned in the ocean near Hatterwick Island, until she was pulled from the surf by her brother's best friend, Sawyer (our hero). Another girl (Gwen) disappeared that night and was never found. Traumatized and having no memory of her near-death experience, Willa was confined in a hospital for two years, where she was "tortured and brainwashed to keep her from remembering what had happened." Who was responsible for Gwen's disappearance and Willa's forced brainwashing, and why?
Eventually freed from the hospital with help from her brother (Jace), Willa returns to the island and maintains a close relationship with her wealthy grandfather, a member of the island's founding family. Ten years later, her grandfather dies and leaves his estate to Willa instead of her parents--a greedy, scheming couple who'd confined her in that hospital so they could inherit the estate. When the will is read, Willa's parents contest it, claiming she is mentally incompetent.
To protect Willa and her rightful inheritance, Sawyer offers to enter into a marriage of convenience with Willa, the woman he's secretly loved since they were teenagers. Can Sawyer protect Willa from her parents and the other nefarious persons determined to destroy them and their newfound love? I'm not saying. Kudos for immersive island settings, mostly likeable small town characters, a couple of steamy scenes, a protective pit bull, and flawless proofreading. As this series continues, I hope we find the reason for Gwen's mysterious disappearance.
In this new suspense romance series, the author takes the readers to Hatterwick, an island in the Outer Banks . The place where years ago a group of boys, now all men, became known as the Wayward brothers. Brothers not by blood , but the bond of their friendship. Twelve years after his departure, Sawyer Malone, son of the town’s drunk and best friend’s with the son of one the town”s founding families, returns home after his time in the Navy. He hopes to see his best friend’s sister, Willa Hollingsworth. The girl he rescued from a drowning and the girl who has had his heart forever. Willa has been back a couple years after years away from the island. Her past is heartbreaking , especially for the things her parents put her through. But now that she’s back, she’s moving forward. Especially after her dear grandfather’s death. When Willa’s grandfather’s will is read, and threats made by her father, a marriage of convenience is made. Willa’s past trauma , hidden in her subconscious, starts to be revealed, putting her in great danger. Why and where did her friend disappear the night she almost drowned? Did Willa see something so devastating that has caused her the PTSD and anxiety attacks? Is she still in danger? This first story keeps the readers guessing the whodunit. The plot is engaging, and the characters not only likable but also well developed. Though not a true cliffhanger, some questions are left unanswered. Looking forward to the next story in the series. If the readers are familiar with the author’s Kait Nolan stories, think of this one as one filled with suspense but still with the wonderful characters she creates.
