Between Lines and Heartbeats

Rate this book
In the halls of Traxton High School, Aaron and Sienna are known for their constant teasing and banter, masking a more profound attraction neither dare to acknowledge. Especially because Sienna happens to be a friend of Bailey Kramer, Aaron’s girlfriend. So, Aaron, the charismatic jock, and Sienna, the fiercely independent eclectic-style brainiac, navigate the complexities of high school dynamics while doing their best to bury growing feelings for each other.

As graduation approaches, they part ways, each embarking on their individual journeys. Five years later, fate reunites them at the prestigious Parker, Andres & Xiao (PAX) Law Firm, where Aaron and Sienna find themselves grappling with the ghosts of their unresolved past. Forced to collaborate on a critical case, the sparks between them reignite, challenging their former animosity and compelling them to reconsider everything they thought they knew about each other.

As professional lines blur into personal revelations, late nights at the office and fleeting looks threaten to break down the walls Sienna has built around her heart. Aaron and Sienna start peeling away the layers of misunderstanding that had cloaked their true feelings, realizing that their bickering was merely an attempt to hide words not spoken between the lines, a facade to cover the reason for their heartbeats.

SUMMARY

This is a story that follows jock Aaron and brainiac Sienna from their days of egging each other on in high school to Aaron working at Sienna’s law firm as her new peer. While Sienna is inclined to move past their “history” all together, Aaron isn’t so much. And, in the end, Sienna realizes she isn’t either.

CHARACTERS

Sienna. Snarky (negative). “It girl”, apparently. Judgmental. In denial. Good at her job. Civil. 2⭐️

Aaron. “Jock”. Popular kid in high school. In cheating relationship with HS GF. A bit dense. Positive growth in adult. 2⭐️

OVERALL

This novella was a personal miss for me. 82 pages to establish much else is difficult to do, and this novella didn’t sell me on much else. The eroticism was very clinical and a little WattPad-esque (mount, dismount, Fuckkkkkk, etc.). I forgot this was even BW/WM romance, honestly, and I’m a black lady who enjoys interracial reads. But, this book does separate past from present, which is a kudos.

Had this book been extended to do more demonstration of Sienna and Aaron’s personality, and their “other people” sex scenes were edited a little more for more authentication, I would have upped my rating. Sienna and Aaron receive their erotic HFN and I wish them the best. I will personally not reread this book, but that’s just me.

Short Romance.

Unfortunately for me the writing style in this felt almost childish. It's all written from an external view and with the reader feeling like the narrater, you never actually connect with either character. Sienna and Aaron didn't feel real to me.

The looking back was nice for setting the scene, but there was very little time spent on detailing what happened in the intervening years, what their personalities/ characters have matured into or even much relationship development within the book. And after holding Aaron at arms length through the whole book, suddenly they hook up (mildly steamy) and the book ends.

Overall a very unsatisfactory read for me.

Just read between lines and Heartbeats, Short n Sweet and delightfully spicy!! Characters were likeable and relatable... I loved that it was a short read perfect for a commute or short flight etc but I have to say it does have the potential to be an excellent full length novel with further character building, delving deeper into their past experiences together in school and expanding on their new working relationship further! Really enjoyed it thank you! 😊

The story was really well-written, and I loved the main characters and their background stories. The fact that they both had feelings for each other during high school but ended up bullying each other because they couldn't deal with their emotions was great. However, the story was too short! I need more. Especially, I would love to see more of how they work together in the law firm.

Needed More

I think because this was so short it was hard to really get into. I feel like the author couldn’t develop much of a story and flesh out the characters well. There was no real build up to their love.

This was more of a 2.5 but doesn’t allow for half’s so I bumped it up.

They are hiding what they really think of the other with banter and teasing. He has a girlfriend who she is best friends with. High school is hard enough without this. What is going to happen? Will they ever act on their feelings? See how it will go

Come of age romance!

Although this story had a happy for now ending, it was enjoyable. I am reminded of childish leftover feelings or misconceptions that I still harbor from my youth. Those feelings can often hinder ones future interactions with those people. Sad, but true.

Of course you know where it's going and how it's going to end but the story could have been fleshed out more. Too short.

I have been given a free copy of this book through voracious readers in exchange for an honest review.
This book has a lot of promise but it's in desperate need of a good editor and proof reader, at one point the woman had an organism which I'm sure neither of us were expecting.
I feel that the plot and characters need bulking out but the actual ending was good, just not a good lead up to it.
