Orlando Sanchez has been writing ever since his teens when he was immersed in creating scenarios for playing Dungeon and Dragons with his friends every weekend. An avid reader, his influences are too numerous to list here. Some of the most prominent are: J.R.R. Tolkien, Jim Butcher, Kat Richardson, Terry Brooks, Piers Anthony, Lee Child, George Lucas, Andrew Vachss, and Barry Eisler to name a few in no particular order. The worlds of his books are urban settings with a twist of the paranormal lurking just behind the scenes and generous doses of magic, martial arts, and mayhem. Aside from writing, he holds a 2nd and 3rd Dan in two distinct styles of Karate. If not training, he is studying some aspect of the martial arts or martial arts philosophy. He currently resides in Queens, NY with his family and can often be found in the local Starbucks where most of his writing is done. What can you say about Retired Assassin John Kane? Well pretty much he is the pre cursor to John Wick. This Story was originally published in july 2014 the John Wick movie came out in October its strange really. Two writers creating almost the same character type. Orlando's take though is more of a mystical bent, turning the ability to Blur aka move faster than the eye can perceive and deliver strikes and blows using this technique to his advantage.
I couldn’t put this book down. Plenty of action from start to finish with time for some conversations. I am looking forward to learning more about the special abilities, like blurring, and to finding out just who is the big, bad guy and what he wants. I really enjoyed this book.
there are echoes of master wei whispering between the lines. John kane is a definite future read. he is tough, straight to the point, and cuts to the quick in his solutions.
Fast paced intricate and lots of twists and turns. Orlando weaves a hell of a story. He is a master of leading you down one way only to show a dead end it way totally not considered.
Wonderful to have a new series from Orlando. Very serious tone, spy-type storyline, fascinating deeper look into the martial arts than I’ve seen before. Very anxious for the next novel.
This is one of the best books I have read by Orlando. It is fast moving, strong main character and a great story. I know it has been 8 years since it was released, but I really wished he would do a follow up/
Good read that would be 5 star great if it was not unfinished after years. Far to many loose ends. It took what was a fast paced exciting read and turned it into a frustrating skein of why’s. However it has made me appreciate some of his other work far more.
Here's to hoping the author continues on with this series. Good character development, great action, and very good story arc. Can't wait to see what's next for Kane.
An interesting martial arts covert ops thriller with great characters and lots of action, the book also includes a well plotted mystery to entertain you.
I liked the characters. It seemed like some punctuation was missing. I saw the wrong word, double words and it felt like there was a jump mid chapters from one character to another. I don't know if this is a side effect of it being put into kindles format, or if it was poor editing. Overall, it was a good book, but these little things were distracting and it could be polished up.
To a new series (or an old one.) Even thought this is a different New York than the one with the terrible trio, it’s very well thought out.
I’m looking forward to more in this series as well as continuing series. I’ve been reading most of what Orlando has had published and enjoying the rides.
If you’re looking for funky martial arts in a darker than usual NYC, check this one out.
Non- stop action martial arts action with startling twists and turns. Sanchez's women characters are strong fighters and don't give an inch. I liked that. I also liked that it was set in my neighborhood of Jackson Heights in Queens, NY and I could recognize the various locations and settings of the scenes in the book.
John Kane is an interesting character. This is a fast paced book. Every time I thought I knew who the bad guy was a twist in the story made me doubt myself. I can't wait for the next book. If you read this 10 years ago give the revised story a re-read, I think you will be surprised. I highly recommend this book.
I really enjoy all the books Orlando Sanchez writes. He has the rare ability to pull you into his stories and make you invested in his characters. This book is great, but the editing is sub-par.
This is a re-write and release of Orlando Sanchez's first novel. It doesn't have the normal humor l've come to expect in most of his books and is actually closer to John Wick, but with more martial arts than guns. Another excellent book and I wait for the next one
