This is a great, easy to read resource for anyone who thinks they might have perimenopause, if they’re going through menopause or are postmenopausal. The author is funny, real, and has tons of tidbits that are easy to follow and digest. It’s a unique book that would be a terrific gift to girlfriends.

The change in tide in our understanding of menopause coupled with the need, willingness, and ability to talk about it are some of the biggest takeaways in this read. The importance of knowing our bodies, talking to a healthcare provider who truly understands menopause and the myriad of symptoms cannot be stressed enough. The HRT FAQ in the appendix is a terrific tool to bring to a doctor’s appointment.

There are a lot of things we can control with a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep (nothing new there), but being educated and normalizing the realities of what each of our bodies are going through— for a loooonnnggg time— is good for the heart and mind as well. Definitely recommend this one!

4/5 stars for me as the primary author and voice in the writing is a menopause awareness advocate and social media talent. I couldn’t tell how the ND coauthor (a naturopathic doctor) contributed. There were multiple references to finding a doctor affiliated with NAMS (The Menopause Society) but no mention of the coauthor in this context. Would have loved to hear more of her perspective and to have also had an MD contribute to the recommendations, research, and facts.

Many thanks @castlepointbooks for the copy of this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

So….ever think “will my vagina ever return from the desert?”
Or…wonder “why is every ounce hitting my middle?”
So many answers to so many questions are given with reading this book.
Great information to share with your doctor on your next visit.

I am so glad to see more open conversations about menopause and am thrilled that books are being published on the topic. For this specific nonfiction book, I think it probably works best as a first study of menopause and perimenopause. I appreciate that it directly attacks stigma and encourages women to share their experiences with each other. It has a matter-of-fact tone with some humor mixed in. I also appreciated that it concluded with useful questions to bring to a doctor and an index.

For me, as someone who has been researching perimenopause and trying to learn, I didn't find much new or helpful here. And I would have liked more awareness of queer relationships. It also felt that there was too much of an expectation of access to resources for perimenopause, such as the repeated recommendation of meeting with a personal trainer multiple times per week as a way to improve exercise habits.

Last, I was disappointed in the paperback format with a light purple text on white background and flimsy paper. Especially given the book talks about blurry vision as a symptom, the color choice was not well done. I found it tough to read and would have preferred the ebook here.

A Refreshingly Honest Guide to Midlife Wellness

Are You There, God? It's Me, In Menopause is an engaging and informative resource that tackles the often-stigmatized topics of menopause and midlife health. Carol King's humor, relatability, and bite-sized tidbits of wisdom make this book an excellent choice for anyone navigating the challenges of perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause.

Standout Elements:

• Normalizing the Conversation:
The book contributes to the growing tide of menopause awareness, encouraging readers to speak openly about their experiences and seek support.
• Empowerment through Education: King stresses the importance of understanding one's body, finding a knowledgeable healthcare provider, and being informed about treatment options, including HRT.
• Holistic Approach: The book emphasizes the value of a balanced lifestyle, including a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep, in managing menopause symptoms.

TROPES:

• Women's health
• Menopause
• Midlife wellness
• Self-care

A Valuable Resource: The HRT FAQ in the appendix is a fantastic tool for readers to bring to their doctor's appointments, helping to facilitate informed discussions about treatment options.

Recommendation: This book is an excellent gift for girlfriends or a valuable resource for anyone seeking a supportive and inclusive community. While the primary author's voice shines through, the addition of more diverse medical perspectives, including an MD's input, would have strengthened the book's authority and comprehensiveness.

I skimmed this book, since a full read didn't seem necessary after having researched the topic online multiple times. I've saved two very helpful pages from this book - one for supplements to deal with specific symptoms, and one that lists the 92 (!) possible symptoms. Other than those two pages, the book isn't super helpful for someone who's already read up on the topic. And yet, it's still a good book and it's great that all the info is in one spot! Recommended as a skim or deeper read for all women!
