✨🌸Are You There, God? It's Me, In Menopause 🌸✨

This was so informative, and I genuinely feel like more women in their 30s need to read this book.

At 35, perimenopause is right around the corner, and there was so much information here that I didn’t know.

There was some repetitiveness throughout the book, especially toward the end, but overall I found the content incredibly valuable.

Unfortunately, the audiobook itself was rough. The sound quality would go in and out throughout the narration, which was incredibly distracting and made it difficult to stay focused at times.

I would absolutely recommend the book itself, but I’d probably suggest reading it rather than listening to the audiobook.

This is a great, easy to read resource for anyone who thinks they might have perimenopause, if they’re going through menopause or are postmenopausal. The author is funny, real, and has tons of tidbits that are easy to follow and digest. It’s a unique book that would be a terrific gift to girlfriends.

The change in tide in our understanding of menopause coupled with the need, willingness, and ability to talk about it are some of the biggest takeaways in this read. The importance of knowing our bodies, talking to a healthcare provider who truly understands menopause and the myriad of symptoms cannot be stressed enough. The HRT FAQ in the appendix is a terrific tool to bring to a doctor’s appointment.

There are a lot of things we can control with a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep (nothing new there), but being educated and normalizing the realities of what each of our bodies are going through— for a loooonnnggg time— is good for the heart and mind as well. Definitely recommend this one!

4/5 stars for me as the primary author and voice in the writing is a menopause awareness advocate and social media talent. I couldn’t tell how the ND coauthor (a naturopathic doctor) contributed. There were multiple references to finding a doctor affiliated with NAMS (The Menopause Society) but no mention of the coauthor in this context. Would have loved to hear more of her perspective and to have also had an MD contribute to the recommendations, research, and facts.

I am so glad to see more open conversations about menopause and am thrilled that books are being published on the topic. For this specific nonfiction book, I think it probably works best as a first study of menopause and perimenopause. I appreciate that it directly attacks stigma and encourages women to share their experiences with each other. It has a matter-of-fact tone with some humor mixed in. I also appreciated that it concluded with useful questions to bring to a doctor and an index.

For me, as someone who has been researching perimenopause and trying to learn, I didn't find much new or helpful here. And I would have liked more awareness of queer relationships. It also felt that there was too much of an expectation of access to resources for perimenopause, such as the repeated recommendation of meeting with a personal trainer multiple times per week as a way to improve exercise habits.

Last, I was disappointed in the paperback format with a light purple text on white background and flimsy paper. Especially given the book talks about blurry vision as a symptom, the color choice was not well done. I found it tough to read and would have preferred the ebook here.

Many thanks @castlepointbooks for the copy of this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

So….ever think “will my vagina ever return from the desert?”
Or…wonder “why is every ounce hitting my middle?”
So many answers to so many questions are given with reading this book.
Great information to share with your doctor on your next visit.

This is a book I will be recommending to others as it is jammed with information in an accessible format. As a post-menopausal woman I still found this book to be so informative! Over 90 (!) symptoms of peri-menopause - many not studied - makes this whole process frustrating for almost everyone and this book laid out many of the symptoms and potential ways to manage and cope. The author used humour and rhetorical questions to address some of the more embarrassing possibilities and was clear that there were no easy answers - but trying something was better than suffering in silence. Reading this book made me aware of things I experienced that I now understand to have been menopause related and had I been more aware at the time I would have better understood what was happening.

The main take-away about this book is that menopause is something that over 50% of the population will experience and people need to talk about it. Share symptoms, share solutions, de-stigmatize the whole process so that work places, homes, and the world in general are more aware and understanding of this once taboo subject.

The author provides a menopause friendly physician list resource as well as a few reliable websites. In addition she provides a checklist and question list to help determine if hormone replacement is a viable option to discus with your doctor. Other menopause books that I read have been quite clinical and textbook-like making them less useful. This book feels more useful.

The narrator has a pleasant reading voice with some British pronunciations that will catch your ear.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.

A Refreshingly Honest Guide to Midlife Wellness

Are You There, God? It's Me, In Menopause is an engaging and informative resource that tackles the often-stigmatized topics of menopause and midlife health. Carol King's humor, relatability, and bite-sized tidbits of wisdom make this book an excellent choice for anyone navigating the challenges of perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause.

Standout Elements:

• Normalizing the Conversation:
The book contributes to the growing tide of menopause awareness, encouraging readers to speak openly about their experiences and seek support.
• Empowerment through Education: King stresses the importance of understanding one's body, finding a knowledgeable healthcare provider, and being informed about treatment options, including HRT.
• Holistic Approach: The book emphasizes the value of a balanced lifestyle, including a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep, in managing menopause symptoms.

TROPES:

• Women's health
• Menopause
• Midlife wellness
• Self-care

A Valuable Resource: The HRT FAQ in the appendix is a fantastic tool for readers to bring to their doctor's appointments, helping to facilitate informed discussions about treatment options.

Recommendation: This book is an excellent gift for girlfriends or a valuable resource for anyone seeking a supportive and inclusive community. While the primary author's voice shines through, the addition of more diverse medical perspectives, including an MD's input, would have strengthened the book's authority and comprehensiveness.

As a 40 year old perimenopausal woman I am exactly the target audience for this book so when I received the ALC from NetGalley I was ready to listen immediately.

For the most part I loved this book. It was informative and validating. I enjoyed the matter of fact tone, it didn’t feel like I was listening to a lecture, but to a friend. So many of the symptoms she spoke of are things I have or am currently experiencing so hearing the medical reasoning and ways to help control them was absolutely wonderful.

However, that brings me to the audio quality. Not great. The sound changed volume a lot. I kept checking my battery on my phone because sometimes when I get a low battery, the volume goes down. It was never that. The narrator also sounded very much like AI to me. Maybe it was the way she switched the way she pronounced ES-trogen vs EES-trogen? But there was also a point where “hahaha” must have been written in and that straight up sounded robotic. Lastly, I’m not sure if “Protect Your Peace” is something used to separate paragraphs or what but I think if I hear it one more time it will be too many.

Overall, the book was incredible but I would not recommend the audio.

I chose this audiobook book based on the title alone. Listening to felt like sitting down with a friend who wanted to reassure you that what you’re going through is normal. Carol King talks about the hundreds of menopause symptoms and reminds readers every one is to work with their doctor to find what works best for them.

There was a lot of discussion about making menopause a more open topic, especially in the workplace. Many of the suggestions like dedicated menopause rooms with extra air conditioning and giving sufferers additional breaks felt an unrealistic. I don’t see that workplaces with extra space or staff to cover your hot flash and rage sessions.
This book had some helpful tips and really promotes advocating for yourself and giving lots of self care. My biggest issue was the AI narration it made it hard to stay engaged.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you're looking for an easy to understand guide to menopause, this is a great resource. I listened to the audiobook, read by AI, and found it helpful. The book covers the physical and emotional changes that can come with menopause while offering practical tips, helpful advice, and reassurance along the way.

I'm someone who can't learn enough about it so I appreciated that the information was presented in a clear and compassionate way without feeling overwhelming. From managing symptoms to understanding what to expect, this book provides encouragement and reminds readers that they're not alone in this journey.

A helpful book for anyone experiencing menopause, preparing for it, or wanting to better support someone who is.

Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC.

This is the book that every woman should have access to starting around age 35-40 years! The content is absolutely helpful to normalize all the chaos that can be perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. A literal gold mine of information from modern medicine made much more palatable with Carol King's gentle humor.

I only have ONE complaint about this audiobook... It is AI generated. The AI generated narration caused several moments of frustration and sometimes laughter for the poor pronunciation of common terms (for example, pronouncing vaginal as vah-JI-nol... yikes!). Please republish this with an actual narrator... heck, I volunteer as tribute!

Thank you to macmillan audio and NetGalley for sending me this audiobook... please read the physical or E-book.

I love how many books we’re getting on perimenopause and menopause. The elder millennial women are taking charge! I wish that this information had been available a decade ago when I first started having so many of these symptoms, but I’m glad it’s available now. I smiled at the title- it brought back memories of reading the Judy Blume book after my first period.
The author does a great job doing a surface dive of a vast range of symptoms. You might want to look at some of the books written by medical doctors if you want more in depth explanations.
I didn't love the AI voice but it explains why I felt like the narration had inflections of a number of popular narrator’s voices. I hope they were compensated for it.

I skimmed this book, since a full read didn't seem necessary after having researched the topic online multiple times. I've saved two very helpful pages from this book - one for supplements to deal with specific symptoms, and one that lists the 92 (!) possible symptoms. Other than those two pages, the book isn't super helpful for someone who's already read up on the topic. And yet, it's still a good book and it's great that all the info is in one spot! Recommended as a skim or deeper read for all women!
