“Deliciously sensational…What could be more fun? As if the wives of Stepford went to the Valley of the Dolls.”—
Kirkus

Ivy Gordon is living on borrowed time. For the past eighteen years, she has been the most famous star at the Dollhouse Academy, the elite boarding school and talent incubator that every aspiring performer dreams of attending. But now, at age thirty-four, she is tired of pretending everything is fine. In secret diary entries, Ivy begins to reveal the truth of her life at the strange medical exams, mysterious supplements, and something unspeakable that’s left Ivy terrified and feeling like a prisoner.

Ramona Halloway and her best friend, Grace Ludlow, grew up idolizing Ivy. Now both twenty-two, neither has made much headway in showbiz until a lucky break grants them entry to the Dollhouse. They’re enchanted by the picturesque campus and the chance to perform alongside their idols. When Ramona begins to receive threatening anonymous messages, it’s easy to dismiss them as a prank from a rival. Her bigger concern is Grace’s skyrocketing success, while Ramona struggles to keep up with the fierce competition. As the messages grow more unsettling, so does life at the Dollhouse. Can Ramona overcome her jealousy and resentment to figure out what’s really going on? Will Ivy finally find her voice, before another young performer follows her catastrophic path?

With dark academia twists and enormous heart, The Dollhouse Academy is a novel about the complexities of friendship, our desire to be seen and understood, and the true cost of making our dreams a reality.

This book is a mesmerizing and unsettling exploration of the dark side of ambition and fame. This psychological suspense novel pulls readers into a world where the pursuit of stardom comes at a devastating cost, unraveling the twisted realities behind the dazzling facade of a prestigious performing arts academy.

Told through the alternating perspectives of Ivy, Ramona, and Grace, the story delves into the complex emotions and moral dilemmas that arise when dreams of success collide with the harsh realities of the entertainment industry. Ivy, a former student of the academy, grapples with haunting memories of her time there, her raw and desperate diary entries hinting at the sinister secrets lurking beneath the school's polished image. Meanwhile, Ramona and Grace, two best friends eager to seize their big break, find themselves enchanted by the academy's allure, only to be consumed by the toxic environment of rivalry and suspicion.

Margarita Montimore's rich and atmospheric writing immerses readers in a world that feels both surreal and disturbingly plausible, where the pursuit of fame demands unimaginable sacrifices. The eerie rituals and ominous ambiance of the academy keep the tension high, as Ramona's attempts to uncover the truth about the institution's shadowy practices intertwine with Ivy's past horrors.

The novel's structure, which seamlessly weaves together Ivy's recollections with Ramona and Grace's present-day challenges, creates a layered and suspenseful narrative. As revelations unfold, the academy's dark secrets are exposed, forcing readers to confront the unsettling question of how much one's dreams are worth when they come at the cost of lost innocence and fractured lives.

Montimore doesn't simply offer a thrilling plot; she also delivers a thought-provoking exploration of friendship, ambition, and self-discovery. The story delves into the fine line between ambition and exploitation, as the characters grapple with the consequences of their pursuit of success and the sacrifices they are willing to make.

The Dollhouse Academy is a must-read for fans of dark academia, psychological drama, and anyone who has ever wondered about the price of fame. With unforgettable characters and a setting that feels as treacherous as it is glamorous, this novel will linger in your mind long after the final page is turned.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Flatiron Books for sharing this compelling women's fiction book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.

I have officially found a new favourite authour in Margarita Montimore!

When I saw the cover of this novel I was intrigued but after the synopsis, I assumed this was yet another dark academia and blew it off. I’m so glad I looked at the authour and rethought that idea because I’ve never been so wrong. After realizing this was the same authour from Oona Out of Order, I decided to give this novel a shot and I’m so glad I did because it’s become one of my favourite books I’ve read all year.

If you’ve ever heard of the conspiracy theory that Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a copy, this is practically the premise of this absolutely bonkers book. In a world where this company rules over the lives of its stars from diets, projects, “supplements”, they also rule over their very existence. Our main characters think they’re getting the shot of a lifetime into stardom and they’re not necessarily wrong.

I’m absolutely enthralled by the entire premise of this book but what I am enamored by is Montimore’s delivery. Instead of serving us with a unique plot alone, we are also treated with spectacular writing and a combination of genres that makes this book thrilling and impossible to put down. It’s always impressive when an authour can write in any genre and Montimore has the chops to do exactly that.

This is one of the shelves and I will absolutely be purchasing this to reread when it officially comes out but I am so excited I got this ARC. If you have the privilege to read it early like I did, take it, because this is gonna be a hit when it comes out next year.

Ivy Gordon is the most famous star pumped out of the Dollhouse Academy for almost two-decades. The older she gets, now a Hollywood-gasping 34-years old, the more fed-up she gets with the system and her role in it.

The Dollhouse Academy is a wildly-secretive, posh boarding school and talent incubator for potential stars. It's every young performer's goal to get there.

Ramona Holloway and Grace Ludlow, best friends and a double act, have idolized Ivy Gordon for years. Watching her career with an admiration that only the young can feel.

At the age of 22, a lucky break suddenly grants both Ramona and Grace admission into the Dollhouse. This is their chance to finally make it!

Though the campus is picturesque and the opportunities endless, the two feel ill-prepared for the cut-throat boot camp-like environment they find themselves thrust into.

Grace fairly quickly finds success, while Ramona, who secretly sees herself as the more naturally-gifted of the two, soon finds herself lagging behind.

The more the disparity between the two gets, the more difficult Ramona finds the whole experience.

Adding to her distress, Ramona is also receiving anonymous, threatening messages. There are moments when she suspects Grace, but could that possibly be true?

Would Grace actually try to scare Ramona, or purposefully harm her chances of success?

As past and present merge, the truth behind the Dollhouse starts to come to light. Will Ivy be able to express everything she needs to in order to save the next young ingenues from following in her footsteps, or is it already too late?

This was a fantastic audiobook and a very interesting story. I loved the unsettling vibes of the Dollhouse. I felt that whole environment was so well-developed. I could picture everything beautifully.

I do tend to enjoy stories that follow musicians, actors, celebs, or the arts industry in general, so that aspect really worked for me as well. I will admit it had a more General Fiction feel than I'm generally compelled to pick-up, but the air of creepiness succeeded in keeping my interest.

The 1st-chapter of this sets the tone and while it does take a step back, it's a slow build, that sense of urgency, even in moments where you can't put your finger on why, remains. It's one of those stories that sneaks under your skin without you being able to verbalize why that is.

I loved Ramona's perspective most of all, because the further in got in, the more I started to question her reliability, and I love an unreliable narrator. With that being said though, I also found Ivy's perspective extremely interesting.

If I had to compare the vibe, or feeling of this book, paying no attention to content or themes, to another book, I would say my feeling while reading it was most closely matched by The Other Black Girl.

I would recommend this to Readers who love an unsettling atmosphere, stories involving celebrities, or dark academia. I also highly recommend the audiobook. The fabulous narration brought this novel to life for me.

Thank you to the publisher, Macmillan Audio, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I'm looking forward to reading more from Margarita Montimore.

2.5 stars rounded up

This had a great setup but I feel like it kept pulling its punches. By the end it felt too similar to other things, which is a bummer because I like this kind of book. The Dollhouse Academy is a modern gothic set in the world of the entertainment industry where a talent incubator locks performers into contracts and requires creepy things from them.

We follow a young woman who has always longed to be a Dollhouse star. So when she and her best friend are plucked from relative obscurity and offered training and contracts, it seems her dreams have come true. But she begins receiving notes of warning, there are invasive medical tests, and her best friend is quickly separated from her. Interspersed with this are diary entries from one of the biggest stars Dollhouse has ever had, detailing her disturbing experiences and strong-arming her into signing new contracts.

The Dollhouse is rife with manipulation tactics and gaslighting, but towards the end it got a little absurd when it should have been getting more scary. Again, part of this is because it pulls its punches which makes things feel less believable. I think this had a lot of potential, because there have been real cases of cultish talent incubators in Hollywood in recent years, and this touches on the pressure to change physical appearance in order to succeed as well. Ultimately though, the ending fell a bit flat for me. Not a bad book but a little lackluster. The audio narration is well done with a strong cast. I received an audio review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

Calling all Hollywood conspiracy theorists -- I have the thriller you need to read!!

When Carrie Underwood 'fell' and her face changed.. if Elvis actually passed away... belief in the Illuminati.. whether or not Nicholas Cage is a vampire.. the list of Hollywood conspiracy theories runs wild, and honestly, why not? There's a price to pay for the kind of fame that some people reach... and I'm not above considering that Taylor Swift might have a body double to manage her insane workload?

The Dollhouse Academy is exactly what I thought it would be - and then some. Having a peek at what life is like for childhood actors/actresses is interesting because everyone always thinks they want to be famous... and I think if we knew what they went through- we wouldn't want any part of it!

I've always personally thought I'd rather be well-paid than well-known. Fame has genuinely never interested me because I prescribe to Chaucer's thinking that "familiarity breeds contempt"... as in once the world sees so much of you... your faults are truly on display for everyone. It's a rare celebrity indeed that can make it out alive without a Reddit subthread talking about how awful they are. (The only one I can think of is Emma Watson.. our lovely Hermione Granger, who has never landed in the spotlight for anything negative, I believe? And if she has ... please don't tell me.)

Suffice to say.. The Dollhouse Academy may be a more sinister take than what really happens... but then again... maybe it's exactly what the world of showbiz is really like, and we're all just ignorant of the gilded prisons starlets are caged in.

A quick thriller worth reading!! Thank you so much to Flatiron Books & Margarita Montimore for my advanced reader copy. All thoughts are my own. - SLR

I really liked this book as it explores the dark side of fame at the creepy Dollhouse Academy. Things are definitely not what they seem.

Both Ramona and her best friend Grace have grown up watching In the Dollhouse and idolize the main actress, Ivy Gordon. She has also expanded her career to become a Pop Sensation. They both have lived with Ramona’s Uncle Reed and his partner, Alonso. They get the attention of The Dollhouse Academy, which offers each a spot at the charming boarding school whose purpose is to cultivate new talent and develop stars. Ramona and Grace are beside themselves with excitement. YEAH!

Well, the more pretty, charming, and wonderful an Elite and Secretive Boarding School is, you can probably guess that it is not going to all work out as planned. Grace and Ramona soon find out the school does frightening protocols, medical tests, and assessments of them. Yet, this is their chance to be Famous….Rich….Idolized…..!!! How can they possibly even consider leaving that behind?

This really reminded me of the difficulty young actors and performers face and have no one to advocate for them. Read on to find out all about how frightening life becomes. I liked the message and enjoyed the book. There really are adults with no limits to keep Top Talent making more money.

The Dollhouse really is not for Children. You have been warned.

Thank you NetGalley and Flatiron Books for a copy of this book. I leave reviews for all books I read.

Best friends and aspiring actresses Romanq Halloway and Grace Ludlow join the illustrious Dollhouse Academy, an elite boarding school most known for being the residence of star Ivy Gordon. But once behind closed doors, Romona and Grace realize something is horribly wrong there.

What an incredibly unique mashup of a number of different genres. With elements of suspense, dystopia, contemporary fiction, and romance, this is a book that will appeal to a large swath of readers and for good reason. There is a moody, atmospheric quality to it that is absolutely pitch perfect. From the moment our characters enter The Dollhouse Academy, there is a spine tingling suspense as to what is happening behind closed doors.

Margarita Montimore takes the dark, pervasive side of Hollywood and amps it up ten thousand notches as both the characters in the past and present, as well as the reader, begin to understand just how apocalyptic this academy is. And yet, so much of the story also focuses on friendship and the importance of friendship to each of the main characters survival. The intersection of thrill and emotion is where this story really stands out, and I have a feeling will be one thought about long after finishing.

🎧 The audiobook, narrated by Brittany Pressley and Xe Sands, is fantastic at helping to create that eerie atmosphere that makes this book so fun. However, due to the epistolary nature, I think an immersive read would be the best way to experience this one.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for GR!

read if you like: Hollywood conspiracies, slow burn mysteries, boarding school/campus settings, good audiobook narration, dual POVs

this was one of my most anticipated releases of 2025, so i was so excited to start it and get my hands on a copy! i highly recommend the audiobook version of this one—i actually did a combo and about 75% on audio and the last 25% on physical. it’s narrated by one of my favorites (Brittany Pressley) and she brought this to life in a fantastic way per usual 👏🏼🎧

i found myself really liking the story but a few things didn’t hit especially hard for me—esp when comparing to the works of OONA OUT OF ORDER and ACTS OF VIOLET (i looooooved those books of hers!!!). heads up that this is much more conspiracy/slow-burn mystery and doesn’t have the magical realism element that her other books have, so that that’s a good thing to keep in mind going to manage expectations

what i liked the most about this book was the conspiracy theory aspect of it. you have a fun setting of an elite boarding school for actors and musicians alike, and there is something seriously fishy going on and one of the main character starts to become effected by it and try to figure things out. i really liked the uncovering element of the secret life of people in Hollywood and things they do to keep power + control of people that make a lot of money for them. Hollywood is DARK y’all 👀👀👀

my main issue was with the two main characters—they were best friends, but i felt like there was a little bit too much of mean girl energy for me? i would have instead liked more focus on the mystery and issues with the boarding school versus their friendship issues that occurred throughout the novel.

i will also say this wrapped up a bit too cleanly for my thriller taste, but knowing it’s not a hard-core thriller, that’s not the biggest deal and more of a personal preference.

this author will remain an auto buy author for me and i certainly still recommend this book! however if i were to prioritize books of hers, i would recommend the other two mention above 📖

thanks to Flatiron for a gifted copy of this one! the cover is so much fun 🦉🦉🦉

For Ramona and her best friend Grace, an invitation to join the Dollhouse Academy is a dream come true. The Academy has created some of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry—entry isn't a guarantee of success, but success at the Academy is a guarantee of succeeding outside the Academy.

Meanwhile, Ivy is one of the Dollhouse's biggest success stories. She's been acting with them for almost two decades, since she was a teenager—she knows more of the Dollhouse's secrets than most. And she knows what Romana doesn't want to see—that it might be hard to get into the Dollhouse, but once you're in, it's even harder to get out.

They make it so easy to stay, surround you with a beautiful town, beautiful people, beautiful words. And once you taste success, you get hungrier for it, and you give away more of yourself to them without even realizing it. (loc. 2688*)

This is a twisty little story with perhaps something of a Black Mirror sense. It's clear early on that something is not quite right, but Ramona doesn't want to listen; initially, at least, she's too desperate for the promise of success. It's clear also that she's struggling at the Dollhouse, and it will take more than the skills she comes in with to deliver on that promise. I love the premise—this is sort of a boarding school story, but the setting is more ambivalent than that, as many of the characters are fully fledged adults. In a way more of a college story, I suppose, as they can (eventually) choose to move elsewhere if they like, though...if they're successful, they generally don't. The Dollhouse sees to that.

There were fewer surprises than I expected, though. The climax in particular feels more whimper than bang, but the "here is how the denizens of the Dollhouse are being controlled" was visible a mile away. Though I kept waiting for some kind of reveal about surveillance tactics, anytime Ramona ran off to have a secret conversation about the Dollhouse being sketchy (or, once, to share all of someone else's secrets with people who had given her no real reason to think they were trustworthy), any sense of danger turned out to be all in my head. I suppose I wanted something both more subtle and less subtle, if that makes any sense!

Ultimately a mixed bag for me. I'm curious to try something else by Montimore—her work seems quite high-concept.

Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.

I’ve enjoyed the authors prior books and this one sounded totally up my alley and it mostly was. I loved the look at the dark side of fame and the academy setting, but it was an odd one and I don’t think it will be for everyone. The end is where it lost me, things got a little silly and the ending was abrupt but Brittany Pressley and Xe Sands are both amazing and kept me engaged despite some minor issues.

A fun setting-- an elite performing arts school. But more than that, teaching you how to be a celebrity and taking over your entire life. This is for those who REALLY want fame. Fans of Oona Out of Order, this is VERY different, a touch of speculative fiction but this is really a pure psychological thriller. A little slow in the middle.

THE DOLLHOUSE ACADEMY had all the right ingredients, but the execution was a miss for me.

➛Pacing dragged.
➛All the characters were unlikable in a toxic way.
➛The plot spiraled into weird, then ridiculous.
➛We get a strange sci-fi twist that just didn’t fit right.
➛The ending left us with only a partial resolution.

I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Brittany Pressley and Xe Sands. They did a fantastic job, aside from the character of Mason. He was supposed to be a young, good looking guy, but he sounded like an old, stuffy English butler from a show like Downtown Abbey. I just couldn’t get that image out of my head. But that was probably a me thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As with all reviews, this is just my opinion. If the premise appeals to you, ignore me and give the book a try.

I loved Montimore's last book, Acts of Violet and thought Oona Out of Order was a really fun bookclub pick, but this one fell super flat for me. I didn't really care for or about any of the characters and thought the "sinister secrets" were on par with a Scooby Doo episode.

I have a feeling I'm going to be an outlier on this one - hopefully other readers get more out of it than I did!

The Dollhouse Academy is an elite boarding school that every aspiring performer dreams of attending.

Books about people trying to make it big in Hollywood are always so entertaining to me! I loved the complexities of ambition and friendship in this novel. The author shines a light on some of the toxicity in the entertainment world while also creating a fresh, dark story.

🎧 @britpressley and @xesands brought Ramona and Ivy to life and were the perfect fit to voice the characters. It was a wonderful listening experience and I’d definitely recommend the audiobook for anyone interested in reading this one!

🎧 Thank you @macmillan.audio for the free ALC.

It’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you.

I wanted to love this one but although it was well written, it was missing the wow factor. It was predictable, which for a romance is expected but in a thriller didn’t work.

It started off strong but fizzled at the end. I’ve read a lot of similar books in the scifi domain and this detracted from my enjoyment.

On the plus side, fast paced and easy to listen to - the cast of audiobook narrators did a nice job.

You might like this if you enjoy Hollywood and the cost of fame, Stepford Wives, and unlikeable main characters.

I didn’t even make it through a third of this book. Even though I of course can’t relate to the setting, was just too slow and boring and weird. Maybe I should carry on since everyone is rating it so highly but the audio book is also painful to listen to, don’t like the narrators.

This book was perfect!! 5 star read and definitely will be a 2025 book of the year. I loved this book and want more of this world. I don’t want to leave Ms. Montimore’s Dollhouse Academy. The drama, suspense, and love(romantic, friendship) was so captivating. If you are into the world of fame and dreamed of being a star-read this book! The author provided amazing details and I kept thinking this could be happening in actual life! I was so happy with how the author tied the story up. Make sure you have a lot of free time, I didn’t want to do anything but read this book. The chapters are fast, short and leave on a cliffhanger. I am so happy I read this one. Disclaimer: I’m a sucker for Dark Academia in nearly every form

This was a solid YA Dark Academia Thriller 👏🏼

While I *was* a bit let down with the ending, I still felt that it came full circle pretty effortlessly. I could see it growing into a series of sorts but I don’t expect that, and honestly I don’t think there’s enough there to extend it. (I’ve read a lot of series lately this is merely a thought out loud lmao)

I enjoyed the Dollhouse world and the name is perfectly fitting - kudos! I *do* think I would have liked to have seen a few excerpts from Graces POV even if it were just little snippets of her private conversations with the Uncles ☺️

I would consider The Dollhouse Academy by Margarita Montimore to be general fiction with a side of suspense, and you would be mistaken if you went into this expecting a thriller. I found it to be a slow but steady burn thanks to the alternating viewpoints of Ivy's diary and Ramona. The Dollhouse Academy practically feels like a cult and the reader can tell immediately that something isn't on the up on and up. I thought some parts were pretty wild (and let's say a little far-fetched) and that made this a really hard book to put down.

The suspense was palpable for me, and I have to give some credit for that to the audiobook. Xe Sands narrates Ivy's diary while Brittany Pressley narrates Romana, and I got completely immersed in the story thanks to their narration. They made it such an incredible listening experience and one that I would 100% recommend. I wouldn't say I loved any of the characters (sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️) but I loved the focus on friendship and the theme of obsession for getting what you want no matter what the cost.

Read this if you want a look into the dark side of Hollywood, are looking for a satisfying ending, and a book that will make you put your thinking cap on.

ramona halloway and her best friend, grace ludlow, grew up wanting to be actresses. as young adults, they’ve booked small roles here and there, but still dream of entering the elusive dollhouse academy, where stars are made. finally, they get accepted, but years of dreaming have not prepared them for the intense bootcamp they’re about to experience. not only is it physically draining, but with ramona receiving threatening letters, having a falling out with grace, and experiencing extreme stress, it’s mentally draining, too. when the letters grow increasingly strange, ramona begins to question what she knows about the dollhouse academy and its treatment of its actors.

this was such an interesting story! i love drama-filled books, especially ones related to the entertainment industry. the dollhouse academy was pretty messed up, and i enjoyed watching the story unfold through ramona’s narrative viewpoint and ivy gordon (a dollhouse academy star)’s diary entries. i remained entertained throughout this book! i’d recommend this to anyone looking for a quick mystery read dealing with the entertainment industry.

narration: brittany pressley and xe sands did a great job of voicing their respective characters. there was a lot of emotion in their voices, which made it easier for me to follow along with the story and keep up with the characters.

This is a story about a secretive entertainment behemoth that has trained and produced some of the most popular stars of stage and screen(s) through their famous Dollhouse Academy. Think of the Disney Mouseketeers crossed with the Xavier Institute. Two best friends are desperate to be accepted, despite the rumors and NDAs that must be signed. It's their story as well as that of Ivy, one of their most popular and seemingly successful actors. Can Ramona and Grace get in... and can Ivy get out?
There's a lot of silly stuff and DRAMA in this book. It is light and fun when it doesn't take itself too seriously. The author gave the best friends very detailed backgrounds and I liked them quite a bit before they became obsessed with the Dollhouse. Then things got weird between them.
The narration is good, although I sometimes had a moment of confusion when the storylines switched. Different voices would have helped.
3.5* rounded up for entertainment.

Are you willing to change yourself for fame, maybe even lose yourself in the process? This book solidified that I never wanted to be in the limelight. I'm fine with being a little fly on the wall for the rest of my life.

The Dollhouse Academy is told from the POVs of Ramona, an aspiring actress, and Ivy, a Dollhouse Academy elite. Ivy and her best friend Grace become one of the rare few who receive an invite to the Julliard of acting schools, The Dollhouse Academy. The story follows their journey through the academy and the dark, twisted path that follows.

You are drawn right into the suspense of the story with an entry from Ivy's diary, revealing the twisted side of fame and the dark, hidden history of Dollhouse Academy. The narrators do an amazing job shadowing the dark theme and emotional roller coasters the characters are taken on throughout the story. My heart ached for Ivy as I learned more about her journey through the academy and stardom. The ONLY thing I would change about the story is the ending. I was left with unanswered questions, but that could be a setup for a standalone involving a certain character?

The Dollhouse Academy explores the unsavory parts of a rise to fame. Two childhood best friends are invited to a prestigious acting academy. Coming from difficult upbringings, this is a rare shot at fulfilling their wildest dreams. But can they do what it takes to make it through the probationary period and earn a coveted role in a Dollhouse production?

This novel was a dark and compelling look at the manipulation and toxic expectations placed on performers in this fictionalized dramatic school and community. There was a sci-fi edge to the Academy’s methods which added to the unsettling, even sinister, vibe.

An interesting spin on the cautionary tale: be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

CW: gaslighting, coercion, forced drug abuse, mention of su!cide

The Dollhouse Academy by Margarita Montimore. Thanks to @flatironbooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ramona and Grace are best friends who sing together. They are both ecstatic when they are invited to train at the competitive Dollhouse, that curates stars. Bug when they join, Ramona starts getting anonymous threatening messages and Grace starts taking off as a star.

I loved the first part of this before they went to the Dollhouse and the start of their time there. Once it started getting into the mystery, it read differently but was still fun. I did love the celebrity stuff and if you enjoy stories about young addresses and stardom, you may enjoy this one. The sci-Fi aspect behind it was a surprising in a good way, so definitely read if you’re a sci fi fan!⁣

“Why does it feel like it’s the Dollhouse or nothing? Because it is.”

The Dollhouse Academy comes out 2/11.

✨ Review ✨ The Dollhouse Academy by Margarita Montimore; Narrated by Brittany Pressley & Xe Sands

Thanks to Flatiron Books, Macmillan Audio, and #netgalley for the gifted advanced copy/ies of this book!

Valley of the Dolls inspiration abounds throughout the book as bffs, Ramona Halloway and Grace Ludlow, arrive at The Dollhouse Academy, a training ground for a big company of actors, dancers, singers, etc. to supply the Doll Land enterprises. Quickly, mysterious things start happening, and we're left to wonder what's really going on there.

The book alternates between Ramona's perspective, and Ivy Gordon's, who is one of the pioneering actresses and singers to help launch the enterprise to its global level of fame. Jumping back in time, we see a slew of suspicious things happening, furthering the suspense of this book.

There's big Hollywood energy (even while set in small town New York), and the book is full of divas. It's a gossipy light read blended with dark academia vibes.

It blends genres - thriller, mystery, romance, women’s fiction, etc., but this also left it feeling a little confused / unmoored in my mind as I read through it. I wasn't sure whether to focus on the romance or the mystery, and it let my mind wander a little. Overall, I thought this was fun, but not my favorite of Montimore's.

🎧 Amazing narration - these narrators can do no wrong!

An enjoyable albeit dark story that follows two women and their experiences at the Dollhouse Academy, an exclusive boarding school that helps talented stars find and maintain fame.

Ivy is 34 and is reflecting on her many experiences at the Academy over the course of several years. Ramona is 22 and is only beginning her journey at the Dollhouse Academy with her best friend Grace.

I loved the dual perspectives and performances. The narrators knocked it out of the park! I was invested in Ramona’s and Ivy’s storylines and was captivated by the dark twists and turns their journeys took. The exploration of fame and the lengths actors may take to achieve and maintain it was interesting and kept my attention from beginning to end.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy of this audiobook.

EXCUSE ME while I scream to the roof tops my NEWEST BOOK OBSESSION!👏👏👏👏

Oh. My. Gosh! Y’ALL!!!! Put this on your radar put this on where ever you put a list of must reads because this right here I’m telling you is a must read!

It gave me Black Widow vibes (the movie but not the skilled fighting parts the parts where she’s in a “school for girls” and the things she goes through) mixed with Taylor Jenkins Reid Daisy Jones and the Six.
If that doesn’t sell you I don’t know what will.

This was wild and mysterious and I loved every second I was just glued to this book.

Ramona is so relatable and there were things she was going through that I’ve dealt with and it was eerie how similar some situations with friendships were.
I was completely invested in this story and needed to know what was going on just as badly as the character wanted to.

I loved reading the Acknowledgments and how the author read and researched child actor memoirs for some insight and it inspired this story for her. She listed a few I’ve read and didn’t know about so thank you for that discovery too!
