This Rough Magic

Rate this book
The island of Corfu is one of the most beautiful Greek islands. It is a place of sunshine, poetry, mystery. It is possibly the magic island that William Shakespeare was thinking of - the island where Prospero practices his 'rough magic', in the famous play The Tempest. What better place for an out-of-work actress to relax for a few weeks? But the island is full of danger and mysteries, and Lucy Waring's holiday is far from peaceful. Soon she learns that there is a dark side to the magic island where dolphins swim in the clear blue sea.

Okay... let me tell you, this was a required read for school so... I wasn't expecting much of it.
I was so bored the whole time (I don't know if it was me or what) but I fell asleep reading it. Even in the end when it was suposed to discover the "mistery".

Some scenes were so stupid, like when the main character, Lucy, was escaping from the villain, she gets inside of HIS own boat and just hides herself with a blanket in his bed.
Like are you kidding me 🤦🏼‍♀️
So... it wasn't for me

I started reading "This Rough Magic" by Mary Stewart to perk up, since I was planning to rest on one of the Greek islands this year, but the quarantine made its adjustments.

The action takes place on the Greek island of Corfu, which lies like a jewel, green and gold, in the Ionian Sea, and where dolphins swim in the sparkling blue water. The atmosphere of hot, distinctive Corfu enveloped me completely.

The main character Lucy Waring, a young, out-of-work actress, relaxes on the island in her sister's secluded villa. She wants only to enjoy her holiday in the bright sunshine. She is not interested in mysteries and secret journeys of boat smugglers to ‘closed’ Albania at night – until people begin to be hurt. She meets a rude young man, who seems to have something to hide. Then there is a death by drowning, and then another…

This is a very nice summer novel. I guess it's perfect for relaxed and leisurely reading. :)

This is one of the stories that I cannot stop reading. I did not really understand the murderer's motive clearly still I enjoyed the whole story.

Well, the story was nice but I think that the title didn't really match the context of the story. Smuggling, murder, and the forbidden island, non of them can be put under the title Magic.

2/5. De eerste helft van het boekje was vrij saai en 'moeilijk' te begrijpen omdat ik niet goed snapte hoe de karakters in elkaar zaten, maar daarna werd het wel wat spannender en ging mn rating van 1 naar 2 sterren 😅

1. Oxford level 5

2. 7/10=40min, 7/12=60min, 7/13=60min, 7/14=60min

3. Island, nature, dolphin, rich, money, kill, love

4 a The main character, who is Lucy, was about to drown when she jumped into the sea in order to avoid a gun, which Godfrey, who tried to kill her shoot her. At the moment, the dolphin that she helped before took her to the land. Thanks to his action, she was alive.

4 b This scene made me happy. I ensure that a bond between humans and dolphins does exist. She often played with him after she helped him. That’s why, I think that he likes her and so he wanted to be useful to her. I also feel that I want to swim with dolphins.

5. This book is like suspense. When I started reading it, I found it difficult for me to understand because this book has a lot of advance hints. However, more I went on reading it, more I understood the texts of it. I really had a good time while reading. This book describes human carefully and so I was able to imagine the character’s face and mind.
