Omg, such a bittersweet ending 🤧🥹🫠

For the first time ever, I’m actually sad that this is a standalone fantasy series 😭 I want more of them, omg 🥹🤧 I didn’t want this book to end. 🥹🫂 Like wdym it’s over??? 😭

I’m so obsessed with them 🥹🙂‍↕️ My shaylas. 🤭 I can’t wait to read the second book. The side characters have me in a chokehold too 🙂‍↕️

Hunger Games meets Wicked 👀 The author really did it so well. Her writing style was amazing, and even the world-building 🫶 caught my attention immediately 🤭 and kept me hooked till the very end. I thought I had the plot twist figured out, but oh boy, was I wrong 😭 A few things caught me completely off guard, I literally gasped 🫢

And the romance 👀 AHHHHH!!! The best. 🙂‍↕️ Oh, and there’s no spice in this book. I honestly think it works really well as a YA fantasy, though there are some gory elements, so yea 🤷‍♀️

Rose 👀 A very interesting FMC. Not a damsel in distress 🤭🤭 Baddie 🙂‍↕️ But the things she’s been through 😭 yeah… it completely broke my heart. It’s so hard to imagine everything she endured, especially since she was just a kid back then 🤧 Still, she fought really hard 🙂‍↕️ and kept her composure as best as she could. She instantly became my favorite 🥹 And there’s definitely a secret identity trope involved 🙂‍↕️ but it’s done in such a good way.

Zaraleon aka Leo has my heart in the palm of his hand 😔 and I’m not even mad about it. That man is perfect book-boyfriend material 🙂‍↕️ AND LEMME TELL YOU—HE GAVE ME CARDAN VIBES THROUGH AND THROUGH 👀 I was screaming every single time 🤭🤭 and, ofc, giggling like a maniac. He’s a 10… but he has a tail. Yes. A tail 😭 He didn’t give me Cardan vibes only because of the tail, his character arc was similar too 🙂‍↕️🤭 but without being insufferable or annoying. I’M OBSESSED 🤭🫶 with my Monkey Boy 🥰

"I've already chosen to love you... Beyond sense, beyond reason. There is no part of you I do not choose."

They’re a perfect couple, omg 🥹🥹 Their relationship didn’t start off great. Both of them were hiding things—especially Rose—but trust me, it was for their own good. Over time, they finally came to an understanding 🥹🥹 and shared everything with each other. Yes, there were imperfections at first, but they overcame them 🫶🥹 The choosing each other after knowing the truth??? That’s the good stuff. The real stuff. No insta-perfection, just growth and healing together. And now I genuinely can’t imagine them apart 🤭 They’re meant for each other. 🙂‍↕️ I love them so much 🫂

When even the friends have you feral, you KNOW the author cooked. 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ I’m already obsessed with Nox 👀🤭🤭 The other characters are just as amazing, I’m honestly obsessed with every single one of them.

There were also so many emotional moments 😭🫠 hence the bittersweet ending 🤧 I’m not going to say anything about it because of spoilers, so I’ll just leave it at that.

Overall verdict:
Emotionally ruined.
Romantically fulfilled.
Spiritually obsessed.

Yea, that’s it guys. Love y’all 🫶🖤💚

I asked my beautiful Hannah to choose a number and she picked 592. This book lowk sounds interesting 🙂‍↕️🖤👀 Fingers crossed it’s a good romantasy 🤭💚

“I was the rose with thorns on the vine.”

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ✦ . ⁺ . ━ 3.9 - 4.1 ☆ ━ . ⁺ . ✦

ㅤ Once again, I want to start by genuinely thanking V.B. Lacey for offering me an ARC for this and I do hope I will manage to provide a really suitable review in exchange. 🤍

ㅤ I knew I was right to be intrigued by this book as soon as I read its synopsis and I have to admit, I was more than pleasantly surprised by this book. I am usually the type of person who enjoys series more than stand-alone books, for the sheer reason that I love the lengthy action and slow progress of a story, but this is definitely one of the few stand-alones that I’ve read which were really interesting and kept me hooked.

"In the Wake of the Wicked" follows the story of Rose Wolff, an alchemist whose parents were harshly taken from her, leaving her an orphan from a very young age. She was lovingly raised by her uncle and aunt, who, growing to love her just like their own daughter, made sure to teach her all about alchemy and encourage her to become stronger and stronger in her magic. But alchemy is only one of the many types of magic found in their empire and what better way of showing off this magic than in a tournament that takes place every 10 years, where the strongest magic wielders compete to ensure the magic and triumph of their own province —the Decemvirate.
ㅤ But a curse haunts the empire and Rose finds herself thrown in the middle of the political intrigues and court secrets surrounding the Decemvirate and when these secrets seem to be tied to her own childhood trauma, Rose cannot turn a blind eye on them. Despite her life as an outcast, Rose, however, finds herself surrounded by important allies, and when one broody rebel seems to pique more than only her anger, she might discover that love might be both beauty and a curse in itself. In a world of wielders, shifters, alchemists, and many more magical beings, finding the right allies might just be the most important of things.

ㅤ Without any further ado, let me just quickly share some of my own opinions about the book.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ -ˋˏ ༻ world-building, writing and action ༺ ˎˊ-

ㅤ Considering this is a stand-alone book, the world-building was pretty satisfactory for me. All the required information about the world itself, the magical system and creatures and the characters' backstory was more then enough and perfectly provided at the most suitable times so that the story keeps you intrigued. There wasn’t too much new information to absorb and the book does not make your head throb with the strain of trying to remember everything.

ㅤ There is nothing really significant to mention about the writing in this book. This is not a bad thing as I just found it entirely suitable for the genre; the book is very easy to read and you can just literally fly through it. Maybe I would have enjoyed if there was a bit more flowery writing in some parts of the book, but I cannot say anything bad in this regard.

ㅤ Now, as I mentioned above, I do prefer book series in the detriment of stand-alone books, because I feel like they offer a much larger time period for the characters and the plot to develop. This is why, I wasn’t that entirely satisfied with the action in this book. It has a very interesting plot, but I was finding myself slightly unable to keep up and to relate to the characters’ development, due to the fact that everything felt a bit rushed for me. I am mentioning once again that this is exclusively based on my own taste; therefore this is more of a preference than anything else.
ㅤ I probably would have enjoyed this much more if the first part wasn’t so slow-moving in comparison to the quick, rapid pace of the last third of the book. I feel like some of the developing relationships were just slightly too fast and did not feel genuine enough. But, keeping in mind that the entire plot of the novel last slightly more than a month, everything quite makes sense.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ -ˋˏ ༻ characters ༺ ˎˊ-

ㅤ Unfortunately, I am not sure I will have a lot to say in this part of the review; and this is also the reason for which the rating of the book was slightly lowered in the end. I could not connect with these characters and despite them being not so young I was still having a hard time coming to relate to them and their feelings.

ㅤ ᚐ҉ᚐ Rose - I love a good story about an outcast slowly managing to find people to trust, opening up and even building such beautiful relationships with those around them. However, I was baffled at times by how naïve Rose was; and while I do understand her trauma and her wish for revenge, I was expecting to see a much more mature person in her character. I did understand and agreed with many of her actions, but I was also having a slightly hard time resonating with her at times. She was so eager to believe everything that was said to her without a second thought and I disagreed with her misplaced anger more than once.

ㅤ ᚐ҉ᚐ Leo - This is a double-POV book, therefore it is understandable that I was expecting to see a much more visible and powerful characters growth in him as well. I was not as intrigued by his characters as I wished to be. Don’t get me wrong, he is absolutely delicious as a character in his own way, but I think it just did not work for me.

ㅤ ❧ Taking what I said above into consideration, there is not wonder that the romance part of the book didn’t really manage to reach my expectations. Pairing these two characters that didn’t really achieve any sort of empathy from my side with the fact that the entire plot is very short and slightly rushed, I could not understand and fall for such a fast development of a love story. It is still very enjoyable, the tension is there at times and there are some very sweet and heart-warming moments in the books, but I was just expecting a bit more. The romance just fell a bit flat.

ㅤㅤ ᚐ҉ᚐ Without wanting to spoil anything, I will not go into talking about some of the characters in this book or mention them just for the sake of keeping them a mystery. But I will just try to rouse your curiosity by saying that I did fall for some of the characters in this book and I did shed some tears at one point. But of course, I will not be telling any details about this. 😌

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ -ˋˏ ༻ ending and conclusions ༺ ˎˊ-

ㅤ I will have to entirely honest and say that the ending was probably my most favourite part of this book and, despite feeling that it came a bit rushed and fast, it was absolutely wholesome and endearing, while also letting the reader use their own imagination for what might come next. I am really glad that the events from the ending were eventually clearly explained and that there was no room left for any kind of confusion.

ㅤ I am not sure I would call this one of my best reads of the year, but I can definitely say this book was one of the most unique ones I've read this year. It was really interesting to finally see a different type of magic and to see how normal people, humans, can deal with such magical assets. It is definitely an entertaining book and I would really advise to have a bit patience with the first half of the novel, because the second part is really worth it. This book managed to actually surprise me and to bring elements that I really did not suspect, so I would say that is already an amazing thing.

────────────────────────

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ᯓ ✿ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍pre-reading ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⪼ ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I am so very grateful for receiving an E-ARC for this. I am honestly very thrilled about it! 🤍

What do you get when you combine:
⚔️The political intrigue from Catching Fire
🖤The dark, gothic environment from One Dark Window
🏰The mysteries of Hogwarts Castle
🩶A MMC that rivals Xaden in protectiveness and brooding
🐺The complicated dynamics between different magical factions from Bride
🌌A kinda sorta Star Wars connection? I might be the only one seeing this and I will not spoil it besides to say it’s loose, but it’s there!

In the Wake of the Wicked by V.B. Lacey combines elements from the fantasy, romance and political thriller novels both past and current that you love and weaves them into a story that still feels original and fresh. If you are a fan of games and trials and world-building, this novel is for you. If you struggle with world-building-hang in there! It is worth it to establish the lore before the book picks up quickly into its main mystery and competition. While this is a steamy-not-spicy romance subplot, it still kept me hooked. I feel like there are intentional threads that are placed throughout the story to expand its universe through spin offs or sequels, and I can’t wait to read more!

My Quick Takes:
- 4.25/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
- Genre 📚 romantasy
- Language 🤐 mild-moderate
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 closed door
- Content 🤔 death, violence, childhood trauma, casual sleeping around, crass innuendo

This read like a hunger games x Harry Potter and the goblet of fire mashup to me.

I really liked the tournament element and different magic systems at play. I wasn’t truly hooked until the halfway point and then I was sucked in.

This would’ve been a higher rated book for me if I hadn’t listened to the audio. I did not enjoy the female narrator and everytime it was her chapter I kept getting pulled out of the plot, the male narrator was much more successful comparatively. At one point I had to stop listening and switch to my kindle to read a couple chapters just to make sure I actually liked the writing and plot. Once I realized I did, I just tried to ignore the female narrator’s voice 😅 easier said than done. There was also some use of crass language that continually took me out of the plot as well.

If you’re looking for a high stakes, magical tournament with rivals to more, this is a great option for closed-door romantasy! Maybe just don’t do the audiobook.

First off, thank you so much for the arc! I feel honored to have been able to read this before release.

My official rating is 3.5 stars. Before I get to why, I want to start with the positives as there are a lot of them.

First- I enjoyed the story! I truly enjoyed the story that was told. I was sucked in and it kept my attention.

Second-I liked the characters. Nox was actually my favorite:)

Third-I enjoyed the alchemists way of magic. It was fun.

Fourth- I really enjoyed that the book had romance but no spice. I’ve read too many books that rely too much on it to carry and I greatly appreciated that this book did not use that as a tool.

Now as for the rating- the reason I gave it the stars I did was because I felt like it needed one more round of edits. It felt like some things were described too much to the reader, not allowing the reader to experience the story. Does that make sense? Sometimes, it was just too wordy and it didn’t have to be. It took away from the story. Now that’s just me. The only other thing I want to point out is consistency with the world building. What I mean is that using words that describe things but fit the world that is built. When I see Inconsistencies of this, it…well, it’s a pet peeve and takes from the story. An example of this would be in this story, yes, there is blood magic. But it is a world of carriages, torches, a world more medieval fairytale like. So when the word “gene” appeared, it didn’t fit in the world that was built. “Traits passed down through bloodlines” would fit. But not the scientific word “gene” we have. I don’t know if that makes sense. But I see it a lot in various fantasy works.

Overall though, it’s a solid story:)

NEW AUTHOR FAV.

I have been anxiously waiting to get some time to dedicate to this behemoth and I loved it. It is a nice long slow burn that pays off on all the fronts. I also super duper love that it’s a no spice romance. While I do read a low level of spice, I feel like the fantasy romance market is way too heavy on how much spice can be thrown in and this is a nice breath of a swoony read (with fantastic kissing scenes, don’t you worry) without an open door.

ANYWAYS. I loved these characters. And I loved that it was dual POV. Seeing both Leo and Rose’s POV was perfect. i loved Rose’s character arc the most. Seeing her slowly let people in, realize she’s worth staying for and finding some people that could be and want to be in her circle was incredible. There were many resonating moments throughout where my heart squeezed tight.

I enjoyed the action and competition plot line. It was a great balance of not being ALL competition while still giving those big action scenes their due. It’s dark and gritty and keeps you on edge.

And y’all know how standalone fantasies are so hard for me to love because they always need to be longer???? WELL HERE YA GO. 650 pages of goodness. I actually felt like I got to know all of the characters, understand the world building and magic system and really let the relationships develop.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate – high
- Content Warnings: loss of life, blood/gore depiction

Leo has a tail which I really didn't like and it was very strange. We only see Leo's POV in 18 out of 81 chapters which is annoying because I would have liked to see more from him. The banter was awful, here's an example: Rose says “What’s the magic word?” Leo says “Please, will you let me in?” and then she responds by saying “That wasn’t so hard. Fine, you may enter.” sigh* and then after every exchange of banter it would be like this “Did he hurt you?” Leo asked, all annoyance and banter forgotten as his eyes raked over my form. So that we know that was a sorry attempt at banter. Yeah so that's what I didn't like now let's talk about what I did like The maps were beautiful as was the cover. The magic system was really interesting as well. The family relationships and especially the sibling relationship with Leo and Rissa was so sweet. I really did like the found family as well.

“𝘒𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘺, 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.”

The Characters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rose ~ She is an Alchemist so that's cool. She is also the Feywood challenger. She is a morally grey character if that's your thing. I personally don't really like the morally grey thing. I don't dislike it, it's just not a selling point for me personally but I liked her.
Zareleon "Leo" ~ He was such a protective twin brother to Rissa and was also a member of the sentinels, he was like really possessive of rose though So that being said I liked him well enough other then the tail.
Clarissa "Rissa" ~ she is the leader of The Sentinels, a group of Veridians who sought peace and justice and weren’t afraid to use an occasional blade to accomplish it. I liked her.
Quotes
~~~~~~~
“Recognition lit in his eyes at the names. “I didn’t realize Nox was so…pretty,” he said grudgingly. “Not my type,” I said with a wink. “I prefer my men tortured and brooding. And with tails,” I added, then tapped my lip. “Which Nox might have, actually.” With his hands at my waist, Leo pulled me closer. “You’re incorrigible.”“And I have a feeling that’s your type.”

“I’ve already chosen to love you, Rose Wolff. Beyond sense, beyond reason. There is no part of you I do not choose.”

“Rose tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and gave me a soft smile. One free of sarcasm, of derision or distaste or distrust. The beams from the afternoon sun shimmered around her, making her olive skin glow and her green eyes sparkle. She was…stunning. Fates, I was in trouble.”

I really had no idea what to expect going into this but I LOVED this book.

It actually took me longer to read than most books because as much as I wanted to stay up all night and day reading it, I also wanted it to last and didn't want it to end.

The magic system and world building is intriguing and pulls from many different magic systems and worlds to create this unique and exciting magical world with alchemists, shifters, light and shadow wielders, those who can teleport and illusionists.

I went back and forth so many times on who exactly was telling the truth about the curse and our FMC's family, there were so many aspects to this book that one minute I thought I had figured out and the next I realized I was still missing something, or wasn't quite correct in my determinations.

The romance had me swooning, I adore the build up, the development, the tension of the relationship between our FMC and MMC. You can feel the chemistry from their very first interaction despite the argumentative nature of those interactions.

The book ended on a note that had the main conflict wrapped up nicely but still left so many storylines and potential conflicts to explore for the next book(s?) of the series.

Overall a phenomenal read and will definitely be recommending this one to friends!

received as an ARC (my very first!!!!) and thoroughly enjoyed! I loved that it was a one off so i don’t have to wait for the rest of the series, i really enjoyed the premise, all of it was just really good. my one issue would only be that I felt the FMC and MMC hated each other one minute and then all of a sudden they were each others only sources of comfort? for me that just felt rushed and I wish we had gotten more of the buildup of the relationship. either way, great book and would definitely recommend!

"𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶... 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦, 𝘣𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦."

As a dreadful curse spreads throughout the lands and affecting those close to her, Rose finds herself as the default contestant for the Decemvirate, a magical tournament pitting her against the other realms.

In a world divided and driven by fear and thirst for power, Rose must navigate her unexpected circumstances and impossible task of besting the most powerful emperor. In the quest for answers, will she emerge unscathed?

Tropes:
👀 Dual POV
🩶 Morally grey FMC
💁🏻‍♂️ Broody MMC
🤝 Reluctant allies to lovers
💀 Deadly trials
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Found family
🫑 No spice romance
🪩 Masquerade ball
🐴 One horse
🩹 Wound tending

After the loss of her parents, Rose threw herself into her family’s apothecary. As an alchemist, she prides herself on pursuit of knowledge and healing but can’t help creating a little mischief along the way. Her unfortunate circumstances stirred mistrust among her town and she’s socially ostracized. An unlikely alliance with a group of idealistic rebels seeking to disband the emperor's hold.

Rose must face difficult truths, the draw of forbidden magic, and her conflicted feelings for those around her. I loved the slow reveals and how they shape Rose. Her relationship with Leo is gradual and both realize how alike they are. Leo bears the burden of needing to protect those close to him. Will he allow himself to feel for Rose and live for something other than revenge?

In the Wake of the Wicked unleashes a new dark world full of alluring magic, thrilling de@dly trials, and a heartfelt spice free romance. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series

Thank you VB for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Is proper grammar dead? I mean, I really get how language and culture changes over time, I’m definitely not one to brag about my own grammatical skills, but there are certain things that can’t just be ignored when conveying ideas to others in the written form. I just can’t get behind this story. I don’t understand how a book with such poor grammar and a disconnected flow in the telling of the story can get so many positive ratings. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like many newer writers don’t have the same standards for grammatical quality that there once were. This book was simply painful to push my way through. As an ARC reader I appreciate the opportunity to explore the story and the characters, but so much could be improved to make this a much better experience. There were honestly a number of other things that I had trouble stomaching with this read. One example of this was, several times the way the FMC’s character was expressed it was incredibly demeaning to her intelligence and made me take pause as to what sort of person I was meant to experience with her. I’m sure this is not what the author intended, but it is what was conveyed. Another aspect of the incongruity of the book was, at times I felt as if I were casually reading the comment section of a social media post. And I don’t find that a good thing. It was disappointing to say the least. I had high hopes for this book but came away feeling incredibly disappointed.

Hands down one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Did someone say: great writing? New fictional boyfriend/s? Badass heroine?
Plot twists? Morally grey characters? A really cool magic system and all in all just a fantastic book? Cause this one literay makes me want to read the next one now😭

This is the most perfect October read. It doesn’t get witchier or spookier than this book. I felt like I was actually living in this world and didn’t ever want to leave. In the Wake of the Wicked has alchemists, apothecaries, spells, grimoires, shifters, and an entire empire competing in a magical tournament. One of my absolute favorite plots is magical trials and this is one of the best ones I’ve read. The riddles and tasks on magically changing paper was reminiscent of the whimsical games of Caraval. This also had vibes similar to Belladonna and The Serpent and the Wings of Night, which if you know me, you know those are three of my all time favorite books so to say I loved this is an understatement. The spells and magic system were unlike anything I’ve ever read and had me on the edge of my seat every time a spell was cast. The main character gets wrapped up in a rebel movement to try and stop the curse plaguing their lands, which leads to so many secrets and mysteries to unravel. A certain rebel stole my heart and I don’t think any of you are ready for how amazing he is. I’m beginning to think I have a thing for men with tails and I don’t know what that says about me but oh well. It’s no surprise to me that this was a five star read since I already knew I loved V.B. Lacey’s writing but this exceeded my expectations entirely. I’m in love with this book and I’m gonna be waiting VERY impatiently for the sequel.

Book Review: In the Wake of the Wicked by V.B. Lacey

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5)

If The Hunger Games met Wicked, you’d get the darkly magical chaos that is In the Wake of the Wicked! V.B. Lacey weaves an intricate tale full of high stakes, morally gray characters, and a unique magic system that left me utterly fascinated.

The dual POV brought such depth to the story—I loved getting into the minds of both characters and seeing how their perspectives shaped the world around them. The character development was phenomenal; watching them grow, falter, and fight to find their path was such a satisfying journey.

And let’s talk about the magic system! It’s so creative and unlike anything I’ve read before—perfectly balanced between awe-inspiring and terrifying. The author also did an incredible job keeping me guessing about one particular character (IYKYK)—are they good, bad, or somewhere in between? I was on edge the whole time.

While it took me a little time to fully immerse myself in the world, the second half of the book was an absolute whirlwind. Once the pieces started falling into place, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The twists, turns, and emotional punches were relentless in the best way possible.

If you love morally gray characters, unique magic systems, and stories that make you question everyone’s motives, this is a must-read. I’m already itching for the next installment!

Thank you VB Lacey for a ARC copy of this book. This is my honest review.

I love love love this story and wish there was more!
I love books with witchcraft, alchemy and similar themes so I knew I would love this before I even started. Right from the prologue I was in. The prologue was so well written and held so much information (though not in an info dump kind of way) and emotion and was a perfect way to open up the story.
The world building in this book was top tier. It was complex but easy to understand and read through, and was also built upon throughout the story. The idea of magical trials was well thought out and different enough from other stories with that premise. I really liked the idea of the third trial and loved how that part of the story went!
The characters had depth and held secrets - and I loved every single one of them! The growth of each character through the book is well written, even the 'evil' characters were so well written that I liked them lol
This story was amazing and I loved every page, every moment. My husband was even into it after I explained what was going on to him about half way through my read - and I couldn't wait to tell him how it ended. Which, by the way, was an awesome ending and so well thought out!

Everyone read this book immediately!

This book was so good! It is described as Wicked x Hunger Games and even as a person who has never read either of those books (I know, I know), I enjoyed it so much!

It would be a wonderful introduction into romantasy or a fun option for someone who just can't get enough of the genre.

The magic system and world were easy to understand, the romance was believable, and the side characters were wonderful. While I was reading, I was always excited to see what happened next. There is no spice in this book, but a very sweet relationship between the main characters.

There is no giant cliffhanger at the end but I am so excited to return to this world whenever the next book comes out. Excuse me while I go read all of V.B. Lacey's backlist. Available on Kindle Unlimited.

Note: the first scene is about a traumatic childbirth and may be triggering for some. You kind of need this context for the rest of the book, so DM me and I'll try to summarize it to the best of my abilities if you'd rather not read that. It was kind of a jump scare for me, but it was a short prologue.

From the very beginning of this book, I was completely enthralled by the mystery, action, and magic of this world that V. B. Lacey has created. Everything from the magic system to the placement of every region on the map was so throughly thought out and easy to understand.

Things I LOVED:
♡ cursed Empire
♡ dangerous and deadly trails
♡ Empire divided based on magical abilities (alchemist, shape shifter, light bender, strider, illusionist, shadow weilder)
♡ witty, stubborn, imperfect, morally grey FMC who struggles with anxiety and past trauma
♡ broody, caring, vigilante, MMC who also struggles with past trauma
♡ forced allies to lovers
♡ BANTER
♡ one horse
♡ tending to each other's wounds
♡ found family

The best part about this book, in my opinion, was the amazing mental health representation. The way the characters dealt with their anxiety and trauma was so realistic and healthy it made my heart so incredibly happy.

In the Wake of the Wicked is a 6⭐️ read for me and is one that I will truly cherish 💚

I feel lucky to have gotten an ARC of this book. It was such a great journey. The world building was fantastic and I'm glad the spice was less than other books (not that I don't like it, but it was very refreshing). It's so hard to find a stand-alone in this genre and I was worried that the story arc would feel truncated, but it wasn't. Overall, it was a fantastic read! Can't wait to dive into this author's other works!

In the Wake of the Wicked is a magical, swoony, standalone fantasy.

Rose Wolff is an Alchemist with a tragic past, and she is perfectly happy to run her aunt and uncle's apothecary shop doling out potions and remedies. But when her uncle is tasked with participating in a magical competition in the capital, Rose knows this might be her only chance to explore outside her small village. But when tragedy strikes again, and the sleeping curse hits her uncle on the eve of the competition, Rose is offered an opportunity - volunteer to take his place, while also hunting for secrets on the emperor that might help break the sleeping curse. Rose finds herself swept up in the Sentinels, a group of rebels fighting against the emperor, and Leo, a half-Alchemist, half-shifter whose on tragic story might match her own. But with the lure of forbidden magic, royal secrets, and the magical competition, Rose and Leo must do whatever it takes to make it through alive and together.

It's really hard to summarize this book without giving too much away because there is so much going on - the plot is intricate and the world building is fantastic, and woven throughout is a lovely and swoony romance that had me absolutely rooting for Rose and Leo. Rose is a complicated character - she is definitely morally grey, having pushed the boundaries of her magic many times. But you can't help but want to see her succeed - she has a lot of growth in this book, and with Leo's help, begins to accept herself as she is, and what she can be. Leo is wonderful, and I love that we also get some of the story from his POV too. He is a protector at heart, and will do anything to save his friends and family, including Rose. The worldbuilding and magic system in this book is done well - it was nicely developed over the course of the story and easy to understand. The trials were fun and added some exciting action to the story. I loved that this is a standalone - the story is intricate and exciting, but wraps up nicely and left me feeling complete. I enjoyed this book so much!!

Thank you so, so much to V.B. Lacey for the advanced copy of this wonderful book! All opinions are my own.

YOU NEED THIS RIGHT NOW

I received an ARC of this book but it in no way swayed my opinions on its contents; all opinions are my own!

I honestly don't even know where to start; I loved this book SO MUCH. I will be screaming that it is CRIMINALLY underrated for as long as people will hear me say so. Rose is such a fun character, and I cannot get enough of women in STEM!! As an alchemist, it's so fun to listen to her POV when she's talking about the different concoctions she's made and how she can use them to further her magic in a way that it seems like most alchemists don't.

I love the mental health rep in this book. The way Rose battles her anxiety is so real, I really felt like I was in her shoes at times and it really helped me to understand her struggles. I also really appreciated - despite his incredible character attributes - that when Leo came into the picture and helped Rose to overcome the worst of her anxieties, they still remained rather than just being forgotten because a pretty face was suddenly in front of her.

I think my favorite part of this book, though, was watching the way that both Leo and Rose learned to lean on each other. From spending their whole lives as outcasts and never feeling like they could fully open up to anyone to learning to lean on each other, we see their relationship truly form and blossom across this entire book. No spice, but it didn't need it. These two can leave you hot and bothered more than some spicy romances because it's all about the TENSION. Did I also mention HE HAS A TAIL? I'm not normally any kind of a monster romance girlie but I am HERE for the tail.

We love characters who are traumatized, and Leo and Rose (and company, including me now thanks Vanessa) fit the bill to a T. I cannot wait for the next book and I hope you'll give this series a shot!!

"What do you say, little wolf? Are you up for an adventure?"

Wicked meets Hunger Games. This is the line that sold me on this book. Then I read the prologue, and I immediately preordered the eBook and signed up for the ARC team (thank you VB Lacey for choosing me). Go read the prologue, become addicted, and preorder this book. Go! Do it! The book releases on 11.14.24.

Rose is complex and layered. She is strong and sharp and not afraid to be a little wicked. In her own words, "I was jagged cuts and sharp fringes. Nobody wanted to hold me for too long. And I was perfectly content with that." Rose and Leo were goals. Neither were perfect, but each saw the other for who they truly were and gave each other the love they long deserved. When Rose told Leo that she wanted him to see all of her - the good and the wicked... I was a goner.

I loved the world and the trials. The book is divided into three trials that get progressively more sinister and stressful as the book goes along. It was also refreshing to read a no spice romance. I'm going to be candid and say that I was nervous about this read because I learned that the MMC had a tail and that is very much not my thing... HOWEVER, if that is your hesitation, don't let it be. This book was soo good! Soo good! When you approach a book with an open mind, the possibility to be blown away exist. And I was blown away. This is the first of a standalone fantasy but in an interconnected world. I can't wait to explore more of the world that VB Lacey created. Happy Reading!

Firstly, thank you so much to V.B Lacey and BookFunnel for the opportunity to read this ARC of In the Wake of the Wicked.

Tropes
✅Enemies to lovers
✅One horse
✅Amazing magic system
✅Found family
✅Trials
✅Political intrigue

This book was amazing! I was hooked from the prologue. I normally prefer to read duologies/series and not stand alone books but this one promises to change my mind on that in the future.

The world building and magic system was really well thought out and explored. It was also unique and I loved reading and learning about Alchemy and the other types of magic. The trials were also unique and I really couldn’t tell what they were going to be. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, I was surprised with another plot twist!

And the characters! I loved them - it was a dual POV with Rose and Leo and I really felt connected to them through V.B Lacey’s writing. Rose is our FMC and I would say she is somewhat morally grey which was so refreshing as she didn’t always put others needs above hers. The found family in this series were also so well thought out and I really enjoyed reading their dynamic.

The plot twists at the end were shocking. I didn’t see them coming. I really did love the ending though - it was so heartwarming. These characters will stay with me for a while.

Overall, this was an AMAZING read and I would definitely recommend it. Thank you again for the ARC.

༉‧₊˚🐍🖤❀༉‧₊˚. I Received This As An ARC, But This Review Is 100% Voluntary ༉‧₊˚🐍🖤❀༉‧₊˚.

What I Liked:
𓆗 The subtle, but existing Wicked references. As a fan of the musical, I loved the nods to the musical that only fans would understand. However, people who are not Wicked fans will still enjoy the book, which I also love.
𓆗 The found family. Rose deserves to not only have a romantic love that makes her feel safe, but this familial and platonic love she found with her actual family, as well as the Sentinels.
𓆗 The intricate, well thought-out magic system. Everything made sense, connected well and circled back incredibly at the end.
𓆗 The political intrigue. I was NOT expecting the twists that happened. My jaw dropped multiple times.
𓆗 The romance. Leo and Rose are amazing together. The way they learn to trust, take the risk and fall together, even if it took Rose a little longer, felt so realistic for how actual relationships work.

Final Thoughts:
𓆗 As not only a Wicked fan, but a romantasy fan, this was a prime example of this genre. It was atmospheric, it was deeply romantic, and had well thought out fantasy elements. V.B. Lacey knows how to write romance. Every line had me swooning, and I had no problems believing the romance. I cannot believe I'll never get to read this for the first time again. It was even better than I could have expected or wanted.

In the Wake of the Wicked delivers VB's signature poetic writing, sizzling tension, and a unique magic system that will charm you to your core.

VB's writing is the poetic and lush prose that is dripping with descriptive narrative that create these beautiful worlds in your head as you read. I really enjoyed imagining these cities and areas that she describes in her book. They are such fun places to explore as we follow Rose through her journey.

I loved the found family trope that this group had -- though it comes at a definite cost. I loved getting to see how they all come together to push back against a rising evil (with some unexpected help).

Let's talk about Leo and Rose. The tension JUMPS off the page. These reluctant allies to lovers were fun to follow. They sparred, they challenged each other, and they definitely smoldered. I really enjoyed their romantic arc. VB writes amazing tension filled scenes.

The trials were interesting to follow and definitely gave you insights into the world that VB was creating over future books. I am intrigued to see where she takes the next book, especially if it is about who we think it is.

I’m so sad that I couldn’t get into this story.

There’s just something that feels slightly off to me. I don’t know if it’s the characters, as I’m not getting attached to any of them, if it’s the world, as it’s not anything new and feels like it’s already been done, if it’s the magic, or if it’s the writing.

I’m sure this could be an amazing book for another reader. I’m unfortunately not getting into the story. I’m skipping paragraphs and that tells me that I’m « bored ».

I want to give this book another shot later on, but as of now, it’s a dnf.

I had the opportunity to be on the ARC team for this book and am so grateful for that, first off! This book had my attention from the prologue, and that does not happen often. When I saw how many pages it was, i was a little leery there might be too much “filler”. I am pleasantly surprised at just how untrue that turned out to be. The plot and characters are constantly growing and morphing. This magic system is fantastic and a breath of fresh air in the romantasy genre. The slow burn happened at a steady pace and kept my interest very well! The plot twists happening from about 40% in and beyond, AMAZING! Cannot recommend this book enough. The ending is very open for more stories to be added, but did not leave me feeling confused or empty. Most plot points felt settled, which I loved. 5 stars. Excellent vibes.

This book releases 11/14/24. I highly suggest everyone buy it! This book has honestly something for everyone, epic story, magic, trials, epic love, found family, and so much more! V.B. Lacey used her love for the musical, Wicked, as a muse for this wonderful novel and it really shines through. Not as much in the details in the plot itself, rather in the feelings and emotions the story evokes from you. As a huge Wicked fan myself, I had the same feelings and emotions from watching the play while reading. She does such an amazing job creating characters for everyone to relate to. I cannot wait for book two already!

✨ARC Review✨

This book was soooo good! 🤩

I loved every minute of it, from its intricate world building and intriguing magical system to its unique and fun characters. Add in the de@thly Decemvirate trials and we are taken on a whirlwind of an adventure.
The chemistry between Leo and Rose was off the charts, it may have been a no spice read, but those pages sizzled. 🔥

Lacey has written an amazing story that I can see myself reading over and over again. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for Leo and Rose next or if a certain little fox will get her own story. Whichever, whatever, I’ll be there for it. 😍

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book beyond seeing a few reels. This book however, more than delivered. I thought that the writing was fantastic, the characters were fleshed out and you could root for them. The one thing I would say, was that it was not quite the read in one sitting. Every once in a while, the pace slowed down and it only made the fast paced parts more exciting, but it did lead to the reading of this book happening over several days, but I always enjoyed picking it back up and starting reading again!

I did receive an ARC for an honest review

This was really good! The world building was great, I liked the magic system, and all of the characters we get to know. I'm really interested in a certain fox, and me thinks she will be a little firecracker to read about. 👀

I did feel like it was kinda long for what happened, but otherwise still a really good read! The last bit had me on the edge of my seat, getting panicky. If there's to be another adventure, I'll definitely be tagging along.

Thank you for allowing me to arc read! 🐍🖤
