I bought this book for myself because I wanted to read it. It's the sequel to The Desert Prince.
However, Peter V Brett and I have been friends for years. I don't believe that influences my review.
I gave this book a 5 star review.* See that asterisk? Here's why. If you have been following Peter V Brett's novels, that begin with The Warded Man (US title) and if you have read The Desert Prince, then this is definitely a must-read and a very satisfying one.
But I do not recommend that anyone jump into this book as their first experience of P V Brett's story. At the very least, go back and read The Desert Prince first. Best would be to start with the Warded Man and make your way to this one.
The Hidden Queen follows closely on The Desert Prince, with the same basic cast of characters. There's a good arc of character growth and change, action scenes advance the plot and there's a lot of magic. The 'save the world' plot tangles very effectively with various power struggles and differing ambitions.
Additions to the book that I found very helpful are a glossary of vocabulary specific to this story and a genealogy chart that helps track the lineage (and hidden loyalties!) of the characters.
Definitely a great book for lovers of political intrigue and family politics and dark, overwhelming magic.
But seriously, get the foundation works first and you will enjoy this book one thousand times more than if you jump into this middle book of a trilogy.

I'm mad as hell that I was not into this book. Truth is that I love, love and again...yes, it's annoying, but? I love this series.
Unfortunately, I've not been able to get into this second book of the second series.
Honestly though? It's not because I'm not interested, it's because I really am just caught up in my own shit! Olive and Darrin have my heart. This damn series just about owns me!
No lies here, I finally have up on this book at around 60%. I finally realized that I wasn't getting the sheer enjoyment that I should have. I also knew that it wasn't Mr. Brett's fault, it was just me being afraid and bringing that fear with me into books and authors that I've always enjoyed. So, I'm fucking telling it as I think it was would have been..
4 to 5 stars from one of my very favorite fantasy author's. Mr. Brett has made even Darrin lovable! Olive is wonderful and maddening! Darrin? I've come to love him, but his day to day would drive me bonkers!
For now? I've given it up for now. Once the final book or books play out, then I'll read both. Until then? Hell, I can guarantee that this one little book that I didn't finish isn't going to mess up the rest of the series.

This is the second book of a series and the first one should be read before this novel. In this one the next set of heroes start their journey to go home and figure out how they are going to confront the demon king and rescue their parents.
This is an excellent read but it is a step down from the first novel in this series. I believe this can be attributed to this is more of a character study novel while the action takes a back seat. Do not get me wrong. I enjoyed this aspect and it was needed for the progression of the story. The characters have accomplished their first goal in the first book. But now they have to be the rescuers and the planners without the benefit of leaning on the older generation. I will say the character exploration of Darin Bales is incredible and his character is stealing the show. We really do not get much action until the finale which is truly explosive and will make your jaw drop.
This book and series is a more than worthy follow up to the first series set in this universe. I love that it is the next generation and we are moving forward. I have read series where it seems like time has stopped. Not here. While at times I think the author falls in love with his world and the pace slows down I was never bored with this novel and I was counting down the pages to the eventual confrontation. This book and series is flooded with wonderful characters, morals that everyone can identify with, and amazing battles with a lore of various demons. This book is one more addition to a universe that I enjoy being in so much.

Alagai Ka, the demon king looms over Thesa. Leesha Paper, Renna Bales, and Ahmann Jardir are still missing believed to be captured if the thoughts Olive Paper gleaned from his mind are true. Olive and her forces know that Leesha and Renna are lost in a mountain village called Safehold. However Inevera warns that humanity itself could fall if the Spear of Ala isn't manned and defended against the return of Alagai Ka and his soon to hatch new queen. Olive is faced with the unthinkable decision of saving her mother or saving the world.
The Hidden Queen was better than I was expecting after reading The Desert Prince. The Desert Prince felt like an unasked for rehash of some of the early aspects of the Demon Cycle series. Overall it didn't introduce any new concepts and had a strained premise it based itself on. The Hidden Queen takes more chances. In many ways it reminded me of The Daylight War as Olive and the others return to Hollow after heading to the desert. The early pacing is slow, but I was quite pleased with last 25-30% of the book. The Hidden Queen appears to be exploring aspects that I initially hoped the sequel series would address.
The character work is good overall in The Hidden Queen. I thought Darin displayed tremendous personality and growth in the book. Darin was born with power and is afraid of what it means. He grew timid as everyone hoped to see The Warded Man Arlen Bales when they saw him, but as Darin often says "he ent him." Though Darin is more brave and strong than he realizes. I enjoyed Olive overall and the turmoil of not fitting into the male and female world is a real one, especially in Krasia where the treatment of men and women are far from equal. All that being said, I was surprised that throughout most of the book Olive is thinking about herself being intersex more than anything else. I understand that trying to decide how to present herself to the world would be a real problem, but I'm surprised it would consume her despite the numerous life and death trials she finds herself in.
I enjoyed The Hidden Queen. It left me excited to see how the series concludes.

Absolutely fabulous follow up to The Desert Prince with so much more in the way of character development. Yes the world building is outstanding and it’s so easy to get immersed in it but this book consistently gave this reader amazing insights into just why these characters act the way they do. Of course it’s a journey to a battle royal with Demons that are straight out of nightmares but if the author hadn’t made this cast so easy to love and empathise with then I seriously doubt I would have been so eager to turn the pages.
Olive is stepping up and finally embracing all that she can be but this has been a heartbreaking journey. Darin ( without a doubt my favourite character ) so underestimates himself but the reader never does because he is totally awesome sauce !
A story of both lost and found in many ways as nothing lasts forever but change is inevitable. I loved the ensemble cast and how they all have a part to play . This is just such a wonderful way to escape reality and if you have not started this authors work yet than you truly are missing out on joy, pain, betrayals, action and of course love. Definitely a recommendation from me.

NO spoiling for both books
Nightfall Saga is the new series in the world of the Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett It is the adventure of Olive and Darin in the time of peace when all demons were destroyed, but the ones who think such a thing is even possible, are naive. The queen is protective and watchful, and so does her heir should be!
The Hidden Queen is the second book and like the previous one, it follows the story of
Darin with supernatural senses, is the son of the man people say saved the world and the weight of his father's legacy hangs heavy around his shoulders.
Olive, Princess of Hollow, this time has to challenge herself without her mother's plans, is she a ruler, fighter, or wife?!
I think the boldest thing about Nightfall Saga is the world-building, A land with myth and history, different cultures, and new terms.
There are many focused on the characters building, and I think it is a good thing, but they are childish in comparison to action-pack events and their heavy responsibility, I personally think they could be more mature and even older in such epic tales.
But nonetheless, Waiting for The Demon King!

One of my favorites things about Brett is the recap of the events of the previous book, since it makes it easier to remember without reading where we were. The Hidden Queen picks up immediately after the events of The Desert Prince, where our main characters Olive and Darin are heading home knowing that their parents are missing, and the demons are plotting to return.
We have a journey with magic, demons, and intrigues in such a meticulous universe. I felt like the pace was a mix, while the beginning was a bit slow, the end felt to fast and full of action. We got some character development throughout the book and the world budling in this one was impressive, as were the politics that surrounded it. I felt so immersed in the story that I couldn’t put it down.
It was such a great read specially for fans of epic fantasy. We have a story full of lost and found moments showing us that nothing can last eternally, and we should embrace changes while we follow characters that are both captivating and complex. If you are new to Brett’s work, I would recommend it starting with the Warded Man series to better understanding how it all began. And I’m (un)patiently waiting to see how this story progresses.

Felt a bit slow in some places but it picked up in the second half and then I got into it more. However, the ending was quite sudden and I was left wanting more. Looking forward to the next book!

Book 2 in the Nightfall Saga, the follow-up trilogy to Peter V Brett's Demon Cycle series and oh it is so good to be back in this world with these characters.
As always Brett does an incredible and natural feeling job of explaining what came beforehand, considering it's been 4 years that's a really good thing to be able to say. It didn't take long for everything to feel familiar but having the POVs catching me up was so helpful
Speaking of POVs there's been one added and if I wasn't a fan already of them then this cemented it. There's a big focus on character development with this book and it delivered in spades. Both main characters we follow reveal so much about themselves, especially the aforementioned new POV. The weight of expectations, abilities becoming more natural to them, family and everything in between. This next generation of heroes is every bit as fully rounded characters as what came before and are a joy to ride on the shoulders of.
Of course there's a plot and action to go along with all the exploration of characters but it's moved along at a slower pace than you'd expect. You could argue that this is a typical middle book and I'd agree if it wasn't for the final act. Besides I wouldn't consider that a bad thing. I don't mind setting things up if I'm kept engaged and I absolutely was. We're constantly moving forward to a specific goal and the pit stops along the way just serve to add to my love of the characters.
It's tough to go into details without giving spoilers but rest assured I loved this. I took my time with it because I wanted to savour my time in this world and with the people within it. One of them really comes into their own considering where they started out in book 1 and the other became someone I just wanted to hug and tell them everything would be alright whilst also assuring them they're stronger and better than they believe.
Peter V Brett writes slowly, when he puts out books of this quality I don't mind but I hope it doesn't take as long to return to his world as I really want to see how everything ends.

The Hidden Queen is excellent in some places, a little less than excellent in others but, on the whole, it is worth the four stars I decided to give it. The story continues the story set up in book one, the demons are returning and it is up to Olive and Darin to begin the defence of humanity.
I found the book really exciting for the most part but there were places where it drags. The story starts off slow and there were moments where I found my mind wandering but it picks up the pace and by the end I was hooked once again.
One of the benefits of already having a series set in this world is that you’re already well acquainted with the world and how rich it is. Every area feels very different from the other and it is always a joy to revisit places from the first series.
On the whole I very much enjoyed the characters. Darin is probably my favourite and I really liked his growth in this book. You can see him begin to come into his own and start to overcome his insecurities. He’s a character who is very much tied to his father by the residents of the world and he’s now learning how to live out of Arlen’s shadow and become his own person. It’s wonderful to see. Olive is mostly a great character. I really like her exploration of her gender identity: to the Hollow, she’s a female, in Krasia, she’s a male but she’s learning that she doesn’t have to be tied to one single identity. She does sometimes veer into the insufferableness that Leesha often fell into but then she manages to pull it back, whereas Leesha just continued to be so for the entire series.
The Hidden Queen is a bit slow in the beginning but it does pick up the pace and the ending is excellent, it really makes you excited for the next instalment. The characters are excellent for the most part and I still love this world that Brett has created. Bring on the next book.

Holy ****!? What a journey!? What a cliffhanger!? Can’t wait for book 3. Love the rich world in these books and the characters too. Who’s going to come out of the next one alive? Waiting with bated breath and goose bumps.

Initial thought:
I always appreciate it when an author takes the effort to provide a recap of the previous book(s) in a series. This can be done in a few ways. Brett takes the approach of recapping events within the story itself—across the first two chapters. It's not as comprehensive as a dedicated recap but it's natural, progresses events, and is far superior to no recap at all—something I find very frustrating. These two chapters help you quickly get back into the swing of things.
Thoughts at 60%:
Events begin moving forward properly at around 10%, which is where we also get our first demon attack, and I had the sense that things were going to get moving quickly. They do. From 10% - 60%, you can expect the introduction of some interesting side characters (I hope we see more of some), prophecy development, character and history development ,plenty of political intrigue and manoeuvring, and the forming of loose alliances.
Thoughts at 100%:
Around the two-thirds mark Darin and Olive go on separate journeys and reach their initial destinations at the three-quarter mark. I enjoy a good journey and the opportunites they present authors. While each encounter a skirmish, I felt there was a missed opportunity to develop relationships—they do develop, but this isn't fully demonstrated to the reader. Right at the end I was questioning if there would be another book as this could have wrapped up. Then, a curve ball left me thirsty for what happens next. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next installment!
Initial thought:
I always appreciate it when an author takes the effort to provide a recap of the previous book(s) in a series. This can be done in a few ways. Brett takes the approach of recapping events within the story itself—across the first two chapters. It's not as comprehensive as a dedicated recap but it's natural, progresses events, and is far superior to no recap at all—something I find very frustrating. These two chapters help you quickly get back into the swing of things.
Thoughts at 60%:
Events begin moving forward properly at around 10%, which is where we also get our first demon attack, and I had the sense that things were going to get moving quickly. They do. From 10% - 60%, you can expect the introduction of some interesting side characters (I hope we see more of some), prophecy development, character and history development ,plenty of political intrigue and manoeuvring, and the forming of loose alliances.
Thoughts at 100%:
Around the two-thirds mark Darin and Olive go on separate journeys and reach their initial destinations at the three-quarter mark. I enjoy a good journey and the opportunites they present authors. While each encounter a skirmish, I felt there was a missed opportunity to develop relationships—they do develop, but this isn't fully demonstrated to the reader. I love PVB.
I love the Demon Cycle.
I only kind of loved The Hidden Queen. The writing was, as always, enjoyable, approachable, and very appealing to me. The characters of the Nightfall Saga are unfortunately a bit flat for me by comparison to the Demon Cycle, which keeps me from getting fully invested. I did still enjoy this novel quite a bit, but the ending was yet again a rough cliffhanger, and now I've gotta wait another 1-2 years for the conclusion. Womp womp.

Loved Darin's character developpment! The pace is slower than in the first book, with less focus on the plot and more focus on characters, namely Darin and Olive.

Brett's world building is just something else. He has a way of immersing the reader in the world, the culture, the characters, in a way that few authors manage to do. I've been a fan of the Demon Cycle series for a long time, and have been enjoying diving back into that world with the Nightfall Saga. I think I liked The Hidden Queen even more than The Desert Prince. It was a slow start (which I didn't mind), but once the action hits, it just keeps going till the very end. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up, and highly recommend all of Peter V. Brett's books, starting with The Warded Man.

What an epic turn of events. I didn't love the "Desert Prince," but The Hidden Queen made me remember why I loved the series in the first place. The next generation felt fleshed out with an expanded, evolved, world.

PV Brett took your gender neutrality and enhanced it yet again. Most writers write gender ambiguous people as that is the core of their being ... But PV Brett is the rare author that writes them as PEOPLE first. A human with their own wants and mess-ups and duties ... Hurt due to the boxing it up, but no different than a youngster suffering from depression and anxiety.
Evolving beyond the differences and in-spite of them and because of them, until it becomes your strength that others do not have.
And again reminding us, you are not it. You are fundamentally YOU. What you chose to do with that which separates you from others its up to YOU. And you will not beat it, you should not fight yourself, you will shape yourself through and around it and it is an experience only you have. If you let it become your burden or your strength is up to you.
I love the relationships between the characters and the differences in cultures Brett writes about. Love the way people start at the low and then grow up to the high.
Where people in Demon Cycle were close to my age and I took some grownup inspiration from them, these kids are kids even to me and I wish to protect them. And I'm proud of them. It's a completely different feeling and gives uniqueness to the series (not being just extension of the Demon Cycle).
First-person seems a bit choppy at some points, not as flowing as the third-person perspective (less description). But I guess that is the point in some cases. I feel like it could be improved, is only reason why I gave 4 stars. It's closer to 4.5 and if push comes to shove I would up it to 5.
You continue to be an inspiration, man. As an amateur writer I am trying to get the accent-writing, the uniqueness of the character-voice close to yours. And I hope you worked extremely HARD to get them, because then at least I still have hope of getting there someday.

Stronger than Desert Prince, this one starts off enjoyable while fairly slow, and then lulls near the middle before picking back up and going strong to the end.
I still don't really vibe with the tonal shift and the YA vibes, but I do understand and to be fair, it's a pretty compelling coming-of-age story as it is. At the heart of it, I think Brett is accomplishing what he has set out to do very well.
Brett's character work remains strong and I'm coming around to some of these new characters.
The worldbuilding as always is rich and interesting, and I'm really, really excited for the world to open up in exciting new ways.
A bit of the plot felt a little hand-wavy, leaving what I think are some fair questions mostly unanswered and somewhat unbelievable.
As with the last one, the final few pages felt incredibly rushed and while I appreciate a good cliff-hanger, I'm not in love with the way those last few pages were written in such a jarringly almost...dismissive manner. It was incredibly important and epic and I wish it had felt more like it, if that makes sense.
That said, the sheer promise of potential in that ending is incredibly exciting. Looking forward to the next!

Peter V Brett has done it again! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have all of the others. The book has a combination of action and suspense, coupled with magic that I have only ever experienced from Brett’s books.
The story line is consistent.
The way the characters are portrayed is, again, consistent. The author writes in a way that makes you feel like you are growing with the characters, which makes you completely invested. When I read this book I felt like I was there with the characters in that moment, completely oblivious to the real world. This is exactly what I look for in a book.
I can’t wait for the next one!

Better than the Desert prince and I'm growing to like Olive, not Darin though, I want to slap Darin silly (but that proves he is written well in my eyes) however, this is not even in the same league as the Demon Cycle series which was phenomenal.
Obviously I will continue with this once the next one is written and loved being back in the world Mr Brett has created.

Darin Bales is one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever read about, and his development in this book is phenomenal, the same way Olive’s was in The Desert Prince. These books just get more and more gripping as the series goes on. I can’t wait for The Demon King, and to re-read the entire Demon Cycle in preparation.

Every time I pick up one of these books I simply cannot put it down. After how many novels (seven now, I think?), I'm still floored each time by the incredible character writing. I don't have the words to describe all the ways Peter V. Brett gets it right, but hot damn if you haven't read him yet go pick up The Warded Man immediately. The cast of characters (in both series, but this one in particular) is exceptional, and the world-building and plot are as well. Love love love.

The Hidden Queen picks up directly from its predecessor, The Desert Prince, with our two protagonists, Olive Paper and Darin Bales, head for home – knowing that their parents are missing and the demons are plotting to return.
There is plenty to admire here. Brett’ world building is second to none and The Hidden Queen does much to enhance that. The Demon Cycle lore is further developed and we visit new locations. The two main characters, Olive and Darin, both stand out in a crowded genre as memorable, unique and well rounded.
That said, I enjoyed this book a little less than the first in the series. Much of that is down to the pacing. The first two thirds or so of the book dragged (it takes Olive and Darin an awfully long time to finally head for home). The last third suffered the opposite problem, being action packed throughout with too little room to breathe. The book also draws very heavily on invented terminology which can be tricky to keep track of – although there is a glossary at the back!
All in all fans of Peter V Brett will be happy with this one. I look forward to reading the next book!

What a journey. I held off on reading this one after realizing I had very little memory of Desert Prince...so I re-read the entire Demon Cycle series and Desert Prince starting right when this book came out.
The growth of these characters in this book (and the last one) was incredible. I love seeing the world through the eyes of Darin and Olive, who don't really fit in with the world around them but make it fit anyway.
I dont know how I'm going to wait for the next one after that ending, but I've been reading books in this world since 2009 and am not stopping now.
