Simon Haynes is the author of the Hal Spacejock, Harriet Walsh and Hal Junior (MG) series. He divides his time between writing fiction and computer software, with the occasional bike ride thrown in for a laugh.
I just didn't find it funny. It was like the author was trying too hard to do "funny" and ended up at "ridiculous" and "boring" instead. I couldn't finish it.
I'm really glad that others enjoyed the series, but for me, if my copy had come free, it would have been overpriced.
These books were so much fun. I'm glad you plan to write more quickly before someone takes your keyboard away. I may have to put a hit out for anyone dares to do that. I'm a fast reader so I already got two more of your series. I will force my self to wait until I finish those before I get the series involving dragons. I love dragons and hope you will finish the second one by the time I finish the first three series you wrote.

These novels are self-contained, with a beginning, a middle and a proper ending. They're not sequels, they don't end on a cliffhanger, and you could start or end your journey with any book in the series. Some events from earlier books are referenced in later ones, so it makes sense to read them in order, but it's not essential.

I read ‘A Portion of Dragon and Chips’ first because I hadn’t even heard of Hal Spacejock yet. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of that series. Why? Because Hal Spacejock wasn’t in it until the end of the second book. Hal is a despicable character and I don’t think he’s funny at all. He’s dangerously stupid and criminally oriented. What a horrible role model for younger audiences. I live in America. If I wanted to see people as stupid as Hal then all I have to do is step out on my front porch and watch my neighbors. You can keep this series. I’ll certainly be keeping it away from my kids.
Light and fun. Hal Spacejock and his indomitable robot companion Clunk set out on a series of adventures in which Hal always manages to the wrong thing at the wrong time, only to be saved by Clunk. Hal has always dreamed of owning his own spaceship and making his fortune as a cargo pilot. NOT.... He spends the first book trying to escape from a dreary job at a spaceport at the far end of the galaxy until he hooks up with what he thinks will be his savior. He has a robot boss and is the very bottom of the heap. The next two books chronicle his further (mis) adventures. Very entertaining and a fun read.
This is a great way to start a new series from an new author. Mr. Haynes takes you on a romp galaxy-wife with a pilot who can't fly very well, his robot companion that cannot tell lies, and Navcom, the ship's AI that can't stop riding Hal Spacejock. The adventures they find themselves in keeps you wondering how they get out of the predicaments Clunk the robot, and Hal keep wandering into ! Take a shot and read their stories, it is worth the journey.
Review of Hal Spacejock Omnibus one by Simon Haynes.
Hilarious Sci-fi. I enjoyed reading this series, and look forward to reading more in the future. We all need a bit of comedy once in a while. If you need a laugh this is the one to read!
