KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.

Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.

Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.

A trippy premise that allows Thompson's creative juices to flow thanks to the portal plot device. Whilst it doesn't match the character charm from volume 1, it is still fun, even with its more questionable segments.

leonardo romero 💔 💔 💔 come back 2 me...another dimension-hopping story, w different artists for each pocket world (javier pina’s kick-off chapters are the stand-outs). i think this volume really reveals how weak of a writer kelly thompson is. harley’s presence covered up for the first volume, but this second volume starts to show where the threads are fraying. all the humor comes across as forced and random characters are shooed in for plot progression. this is a superhero comic, so i expect...skills. how is it that the only one who really shows any is barbara? (and i always have to say this, i still hate the retcon of babs back to batgirl.) more worryingly, i don’t really buy that these women know—much less like—each other, which w such an unusual team needs to be better established. gail simone’s run really conveyed the struggle of working, fighting, being together. this is just...bouncing through portals. i want more character and dynamic work in my team novels.

two main stories here....a clothing line that seems to make it's Wearers want to rob...
and a series of issues where the BOP are jumping from one pocket dimension to another.
The team is interesting and the stories just about hold up.

Three somewhat generous stars for Cass and Barda. The villain in this was tacky and boring, and the portal jumping while fun sometimes went on too long. And what on earth is the point of Zealot in this series??

If you told me Mark Waid was writing this as part of his World's Finest universe, I would not be surprised. Worlds Without End is a terrifically fun comic book adventure, emphasis on comic book, as this plot could not happen elsewhere.

Picking up seemingly mid-scene, Batgirl and Black Canary are investigating a series of disappearances that takes them to Vixen who is dealing with her own issues... all of which is goofy, possibly forgettable prelude to the actual plot, which sees the Birds of Prey sent through a portal into a pocket dimensions where a seventh sister has been scheming their demise.

Whew! And that's just the start. Each issue takes our heroes into a new pocket dimension where they gradually learn the parameters of their adventures (and better understand their foe). Each Bird of Prey is so perfectly realized, you can't help but fall in love with them and want them to succeed. The silly plot leaves lots of room for unexpected antics by the characters, making Worlds Without End a page-turner primarily because you want to see what happens next, not because you're worried about anyone dying or the world ending. It's just fun! (And it looks terrific too, with the art style varying between dimensions)

I am fully on board with this series, though I'm worried the next volume is also going to drop us in mid-scene based on the cliffhanger last line here.

An ok or even fun book, but I was expecting better and more violence instead instead of innuendo. I wanted to give this 3.5 stars. I just could not round it up instead of down.

Who is trying yo kill Barbara Gordon? If they are from the future, is there anything the Birds of Pray can do to stop them?

This book is part of girls' night out, part bonding, and some part I just don't get. The part I did like us when I was getting extremely confused or lost, the characters call it out so at exactly the right moment (a bit of 4th wall breaking), so I am guessing this was intentional in the writers part.

This was an interesting way to get the different teams to give their take on the story of different artist and styles. The positives are that Dinah really proves herself as the team leader to me. Cassandra is one of my favourite characters, and I am glad she had her moments yo shine as well as showing she has others' skills from violence. However, next time, please bring the violence!!! The book finishes which character designs and a varient covers gallery.

"Birds of Prey: Worlds Without End" is fun fast paced romp that does not cover much territory but does provide a good deal of entertainment. Starting with a disaster on the catwalk in the midst of Mari McCabe's big show in which Barbara is sucked into a pocket universe, the birds engage in a quest to rescue her as both the appearance of their surroundings and, more importantly, their costumes undergo constant transformations. Not a lot gets done and the villain involved is a minor irritant at best, but a promising new character is introduced, a fair amount of character development takes place and the wardrobe changes are top notch.

I wasn’t too engaged with volume 1 of Kelly Thompson’s Birds of Prey and sadly my enthusiasm is lower after reading this. I still really like this team, one of the more ‘whacky’ BOP teams for sure but I still don’t feel they work just yet. The universe hopping had potential, and was an ideal way to switch out artists without it being too jarring, but the overall narrative didn’t grip me.
I’ll stick with this series as Thompson is a strong writer but I really hope the next volume hooks me in.

Tedious and uninspired. The best example to explain the whole volume is #8: it starts with the Birds at a party. They somehow end up almost naked and fighting equally undressed men. Time is wasted on weird pointless things like a character debating whether they should use the name "Caterer" (I guess these moments are meant to be funny but I didn't smile once reading the entire volume). Then, at the end of the story, everything shifts and a scary portal is opened that sucks Barbara in, with Dinah going after her. The other women also go after them for no reason. I'm sure that was meant to be an emotional, impactful moment, but it isn't. It just makes you think "Wow, they're really stupid!"

In her creative despair the author resorts to pivoting the action to not-technically-Dinosaur-Island, shifting dimensions in technically-not-the-multiverse and bringing other characters into the action giving them nothing to do except being bored, waiting, and complaining they're bored and they don't like waiting.

The Birds face off against their time travelling nemesis as she traps them in a pocket dimension that continually reinvents itself.

The snappy banter between the characters is here and I enjoyed that a lot - I also really enjoyed all the side characters that assembled to try and rescue the Birds, both previous members of the team and some new faces too. The two issue set-up arc with Vixen was also pretty neat, and hilarious, but it's when we got to Worlds Without End itself that I kinda lost interest. The Birds bounce around for five issues, most of the universes are fairly straight forward, and the actual villain of the piece feels...overwritten and yet entirely undeveloped at the same time, which is an odd feeling indeed.

The art's also all over the place, but it's fair enough considering it's one artist per universe, so I'll let them off for that.

Bit of a step down after the first arc. Shame.

Oracle was a missing figure from Black Canary's new iteration of the Birds of Prey during the events of Megadeath, a critical plot point that feeds into this second arc of Kelly Thompson's run. Time travel and dimensional hops govern the events of Worlds Without End, and a new team of Batgirl (Cain), Big Barda, Oracle and Vixen all work together to ensure specific events don't come to pass. Where the first volume had the phenomenal (and consistent) artwork of Leonardo Romero, Worlds Without End features several artists who lend different styles to capture the various settings our Birds of Prey arrive in. If you're not tired of the multiversal storytelling, perhaps this one will appeal, but I personally found this volume to be a substantial step down.

3 1/2 stars rounded up.

Summary:

The Birds of Prey are back together! This time around, a threat from the future puts the very lives of the team at risk, with the first target being the beloved Barbara Gordon. But how can you stop an enemy before understanding their motives?

With Black Canary at the helm, the team assembles for another mission, including Cassandra Cain, Big Bara, Zealot, and Harley Quinn. An original member and another familiar face are back on the team.

Review:

The dramatic adventures of the first volume teased a bigger bad working behind the scenes, and it looks like Birds of Prey Vol. 2 continues to carry that plot. Given that our Barbara Gordon is the first target, it’s hard not to feel a bit invested in how things turn out.

Birds of Prey Vol. 2 is a chaotic adventure, to put it mildly. The storytelling style opened the door to a series of portal adventures, which are fun, chaotic, and highly entertaining. However, while they are interesting, it felt like they lacked some depth.

The newly introduced characters (I’m dancing around this a bit as they’re connected to the villain) were compelling. I doubt we’ll see them again, but that part of the story was very well done.

I’ve been wondering what sort of villain we’d see, given that they’ve been teased for more than a volume’s content. I won’t spoil the reveal, but I will say that I never would have guessed it, not even if you had given me a million years to puzzle over the possibilities.

Artwork:

The portal fantasy storytelling element in Birds of Prey Vol. 2 created a fantastic opportunity for artists. Each new world had its own style, courtesy of a different artist bringing it to life. I absolutely adored this decision; it’s the sort of thing I wish we’d see more often.

Naturally, as each portal created a very different world, the tone and setting changed from time to time. For example, the cartoon-style one enabled many jokes, largely at Big Barda’s expense.

Highlights:
Superhero comic
Heroines teaming up
Epic quest
Portals
Lots of humor

The Birds investigate a series of robberies tied to a fashion brand that soon results in them becoming trapped in a pocket universe and hopping between different reflections of reality. I continue to remain unimpressed by the art in this, despite the now-common practice in comics of having a different artist or style for each 'reality'. The cartoon reality is a nice change of pace, and one is heavily tinged in grey, but otherwise, it all manages to remain surprisingly similar in look. It's not bad, by means, just uninspiring and missing a trick in really trying to differentiate the settings.

There's also a missed opportunity in the plot itself, where it looks as if we may get some opportunity to explore the personalities of the differing members of the team through the nature of the realities... but this really only applies to the first two, and those are largely filled with fighting. Which is the core of the plot... a lot of fighting with not much downtime. I also note that the story often results in the Birds wearing minimal clothing, and one of them is nude for a while, although the art makes this less exploitative than it might be, and there's a scene with a lot of athletic men in jockstraps, too. It all makes sense in context, but it leaves us without a lot of depth, in what is a reasonably entertaining adventure, but isn't striving to be anything more.

On the plus side, Dinah is used well, showing us her leadership abilities as well as her sonic scream. There's some good personality to Barda and Sin in places, too, and Barbara gets to be effective in the opening segment, if less so from then on. What Zealot is doing here, I've no idea, since her only contribution is to lampshade the fact that she has nothing to do...

(3.75/5) I had fun with this more towards the end, the conflict with the clothing was quite boring to me and the same happened a bit for the pocket universes, but when they found barbara I started to be really interested again!
I’m really happy we could see her as oracle for a bit and hope we get to see most of her in that form instead of being in the field as batgirl. however, I’m still happy she’s finally on the team, I lost harley (which I hope we see her again in future arcs) but barbara is finally here!

on a more visual note, I loved the cartoon universe and its style, it reminded me of the persona q games. and in that part babs had a oracle outfit, and it was so cool!

Time travel shenanigans...
Barbara Gordon is destined to kill a villain, and SOMEBODY is going to make her pay.

EVERYTHING about this collection seems pieced together. The artists on every issue are different. The inkers seem like they are new to the job. It's like they had one initial idea for an arc and we're now just left with.........this. Nothing fits quite right. Nothing is gelling yet. Characters get introduced and balk at even being connected to the book.

Not quite the team I was hoping for.
Maybe someday...

Here a good example of comics becoming less bold now. I will admit the days of the 90's are over and we are in the 20's where we have decided to water down the booze. In this case the artwork. I mean seriously are that scared of showing a goddess ass that we have to have her own face cover her ass. Look in the wise words of Tuco from the good the bad and the ugly if you are going to shoot, shoot don't talk. The story was fine, just I guess there is no brave and bold artists anymore, just artists that like to play it safe.

Fun sisterhood and dreamscape fights

This was way more fun than I expected. I'm not a fan of time travel or multiverses, fortunately, this kept it to a minimum. There's a time traveler targeting the Birds and they become wrapped up in a battle in pocket dimensions. I think 90% of the pocket dimensions was wanting to draw the characters in different outfits. It was fun and I love kickass galentines sisterhood, which this had in spades. And no romance!

I love the general swift in comics, we have finally left behind the grimey and miserable stuff and gone towards hopeful, uplifting and colorful writing.

Although this volume is not as good as the first one it 's still a fun ride. Gave me nightwing by Tom Taylor vibes.

PS. Really wondering how Harley Quinn's portal world would look like.

What I enjoy about this series so far is that despite having so many characters in the pages they all feel unique and used properly, even though I personally only know little bits and pieces about some of their history and nothing about some others.

Thompson clearly knows what story she wants to tell and is using the sandbox of DC characters very well to tell it.

Just "Good"

Clearly inferior to the 1st Volume, unfortunately 😞. The character dynamics are way less interesting. The new character that is introduced to help the group is so meh.

It's just a very underwhelming continuation of the series with a weak plot, very basically written characters, and with good art that saves some issues 100%.

The team gets sucked into a portal that keeps flipping them through little made up pocket dimensions. It's a good way to use a bunch of artists without looking like the artists can't keep up. The story is just alright though.

I feel like I'm being generous here. I like the characters, and some of the art is really good, but the actual Worlds Without End storyline just drags on forever. It really didn't need to be five entire issues.

don't really know what to "rate" a run like this as I'm reading it because it's nothing groundbreaking or super deep (so far) but it's really fucking fun! and I really love how Kelly Thompson writes these characters and their dynamics, she really is that girl!
