The ad copy for the first volume of this series mentions how cool Shikimori is and how this story has a sassy twist. We’ve sure come a long way since that point - this story is about as sassy as my middle-aged butt in spandex.
It’s partially down to ‘victory lap syndrome’ similar to the last volume of the Nagatoro manga I just read, where things are quietly coming in for a landing, but are taking a hell of a while to get there.
The exam anxieties are relatable and there’s a fun moment at the beach that’s absolutely not what you’re thinking and involves Izumi being very forthcoming about everything he loves about his friends. It’s a nice way to acknowledge all the characters.
Izumi’s growth continues and he pushes forward and prepares enough to be able to handle all the crap that continues to be thrown at him by life. He comes to somebody’s rescue in a cute little moment as well. It’s as much drama as this ever generates.
There’s just nothing here except marshmallow fluff. Shikimori continues to be amped down to the point of basically being second banana wife material. Yes, she gets to look like a prince sitting on an oddly photorealistic horse, but she never acts like one.
There’s nothing wrong with growing Izumi, it just annoys me that it comes at the cost of anything interesting about Shikimori. Those fantastic early volumes feel like they were from another series at this point. It should be easy to make exam drama, but this never feels like it’s going for anything except the feel good result.
Even the cliffhanger, our two leads heading off for an overnight stay that expressly forbids sex and Shikimori scheming to see how badly she can bend that rule, promises a lot more than I have faith in it to deliver.
Which is what it is. There’s nothing especially bad about this volume, but not much of it stands out either. It’s certainly about the time we should be winding up and I don’t feel like this is awful. It just lacks so much of its early spark.
3 stars - another story I won’t regret seeing to its conclusion whose best days are behind it. It’s not as bad a character assassination as we saw in Horimiya, as I have mentioned before, but it’s definitely got second place sewn up.
After the gang’s long studying time and the entrance exams have come, they finally get to celebrate and relax by going to the beach for the end of their second term as all have their futures planned.
Later, Izumi and Shikimori have planned their last date as high schoolers with a nice getaway together that includes staying at a hotel with thoughts about taking the next big step into their already-strong love. A (100%/Outstanding)
This one was specially sweet with the graduation and everything! Will something special happen between them for the last volume? I guess we'll have to see.
