What a medium-length, strange journey it’s been, but we’re finally at the end of Cinderella Closet, which wraps up pretty neatly and with minimal space for complaints.

Still, we can’t really leave without addressing the simple truth - this never managed to ever get back the level of excellence and sheer ‘gasp!’ of the very first volume, which landed a plot twist that actually managed to shock me.

Partly it was down to being a fairly pedestrian romance after all that, albeit one where the guy dresses as a girl half the time. That was a nice surprise and I was happy that this aspect of Hikaru’s life did not get as erased as it had seemed during some of the middle books.

In fact, even if the rest of this wasn’t enjoyable, I would give it high marks for Haruka standing up to Hikaru’s parents. Haruka’s trying her absolute best to make things work, but not to the point of being a doormat, which was such a great turn for her. Hikaru’s whole family dynamic is really interesting and doesn’t spell out what’s going on entirely; it gives just enough.

And, even more satisfyingly, it doesn’t suddenly sort itself out. That may not seem like a good thing, but problems like family are not always so easily solved and this acknowledges that quite frankly. Plus, it emphasizes the difference between how Hikaru and Haruka are as people.

Then we move on to the whole thing about how different the two of them are and how they learn to live together and such. It’s all terribly sweet, but this hasn’t been one of those amazing pairings where I felt I had to see all of this, fun as it is. It’s fine, but that’s all it is. When it hews towards the traditional it is pedestrian as a crosswalk.

Hikaru pursues his passions in his own way and using both aspects of himself, which is really nice to see. Haruka continues to be Haruka and if this series has a fault, it’s probably that she isn’t ever as interesting as Hikaru, no matter what he thinks. It’s not an equal footing sort of deal.

Still, it’s a good romance that ends well and ties most everything up and features an odd denouement in Okinawa. The most depressing part of that is the amount of time that’s elapsed between them moving in and getting an actual vacation together. That seems insane to me, but that’s life for you, I suppose.

4 stars - it’s not the best adult romance, nor the worst either. Same goes for college romance, for that matter. You could do a lot worse than spend eight volumes of your reading time here and parts of it were quite excellent.

The final volume. I wasn't expecting it to end so soon, especially after all the family stuff in the last one. I thought we'd get a bit more time with them and their story and where they are in life. So I'm bummed that this is it. And knowing what I'd hoped to see, this ending feels rushed. Knowing what I've worried about all along (Hikaru pushed into more of a standard male role), this ending feels slightly empty because we don't get the traditional shojo finale.

Untagged spoilers ahead.

We do meet his parents and easily see the issues without unnecessary exposition. I actually like how this was done and how Haruka makes her own relationship with his mother with his blessing.

From here things move fast and slow. As time passes, Hikaru's hair gets longer and his general style changes into a more androgynous representation. I'd say that works for Haruka, too, although not as deliberately. We go from year to year with an update on where they are with school and jobs, until it's been 5 years and they can finally take a vacation. It's fast because we're at the end without much seemingly happening, and it's slow because over those 5 years, they've done more of the same - school, learning, jobs - and all of their accomplishments are off screen. And in all that time, there's no vacation or date night, or anything, really. I mean, it's life, yes, but it's also kind of boring and totally not the reason we read manga.

And it's 5 years! Seriously, these two didn't talk about marriage at all? They talked about it before this. And then for Haruka to revert to saying "it's a long ways off" unnecessarily to relieve any pressure on Hikaru (what pressure? where is this pressure?) is very juvenile and shows no character or relationship growth. In 5 years. It really feels like Hikaru was allowed to grow up and mature, but Haruka stayed the same.

But it's the finale so you know the happy ending is coming on the coattails of a proposal.

┐(´ー`)┌

IDK. It is what it is. It's a cute, somewhat groundbreaking series. I think it would've benefitted from one more volume, and Hikaru did lose the pronouns over the course of the series, as I suspected he would. It's a satisfactory ending, by I wanted more.

About two volumes ago, I suddenly got pissed off at how bored I’m feeling reading this series.

It’s a very mid romance with a cherry topping of a guy who crossdresses. I couldn’t feel any chemistry between the leads, and much like Haruka’s fretty(?) personality, I didn’t feel like I had breathing room in between the story beats. For such a barely-there plot and typical romance arcs, we never had time to marinate in anything - Hikaru’s feelings for Haruka, Haruka being single after a breakup, her suddenly feeling romantic attraction to Hikaru like a finger snap. It’s all so sudden and quick and I hate that I can still be bored despite that. There’s focus on self love and the right person loving your true self, but I feel like you could find a better, more interesting story that explores these same themes.

Sigh.

Well, at least we get that nice cover art of them both in wedding dresses, even if it wasn't a sequence included in the actual story.

The nicest thing I can say in this review is simply regurgitate what the mangaka herself wrote in the afterward: that the series has been praised as innovative, but she feels "there will come a time when the series' perspective feels dated." She stressed she hoped it would happen soon.

That pretty much sums it up: good intentions, underwhelming execution, I can't hate it, but it definitely lost the "queer as in fuck you" tag somewhere around... volume three? Four? I don't even feel it works well as a romance: Haruka is severely underdeveloped, and Hikaru's oddness and edges have long since been smoothed out to make them a perfect boyfriend. It's sweet, but I wonder if there was a conflict between what the mangaka imagined and what was forced on her as marketable: there are hints she wanted to do more, like the fact she has Hikaru grow out their hair and like I said, the cover art and extra art the mangaka made note to include of them both in wedding dresses. But the story itself is very... rote, and at some point loses most of its individual charm to hit the most tired, expected, cliche emotional beats imaginable. A bit like a hothouse flower that fades after only few days in a vase at home.

I'm still game for the drama, because more than half a decade later after the manga publication, it's possible this story got a more nuanced treatment. We'll see.

This is a story about a boy and a girl, but the boy dresses like a girl and the girl doesn't mind. Like many "will they or won't they" plots, once the main characters get together as a couple the energy changes. It's less exciting somehow. Now they're doing mundane things. Whose turn is it to do laundry?

Although this series kind of fizzled out for me in the last couple of volumes, it feels incredibly important to have books like "Cinderella Closet" these days, as progress takes a pause or even a step backwards. On dates, people whisper behind their backs. ("Are those 2 girls together?") And the gut punch is how Hikaru is treated by his own parents. They seem relieved that he is dating a girl, but they'd still rather disown him than make an effort to understand or just accept him. Haruka, who comes from a close "do anything for ya" family and seems clueless about conditional love, and who struggles with her own insecurities about herself through this whole series, charges right to Hikaru's defense. It's a defining moment of "Cinderella Closet." (I have to say, I also love Hikaru's sour aunt and how she supports him - it's never a question with her, despite her grumpy persona.)

There are some threads that never get tied up, but I liked how the series circles back to the Cinderella metaphor and whether Hikaru is a fairy godmother or a prince charming. Maybe he's both. All in all, I'm glad I read this one. Wonder what the artist will do next?

This series was amazing. The themes of love, finding oneself and one’s passion, friendship, confidence, trust, growth, acceptance, family - I could name more - are so well-developed and also realistic (to some degree). The way Haruka and Hikaru supported each other and grew together from the beginning, the challenges they faced (together and individually) as well as their love for each other really came together in this finale. The ending was so good, and I just love how Haruka beat Hikaru to it again at the end was so funny. Really loved them and cannot recommend this series enough! There are some aspects in which they seem immature, but they learn from it and grow. Will definitely re-read it at some point!

Pretty sweet finale!

We see into their future as they both come in their own career wise. Overall, this was a pretty adorable series about an androgynous cross-dressing fashionista and a self-conscious tomboy. I appreciated that the book continued Hikaru's fashion throughout the entire thing and that the way other people reacted to it wasn't shied away from. I like that we finally got to see other sides of Hikaru when they weren't just helping Haruka with things. I hope the show ends on a similar note.

Incredibly cute ending. They really are just the best, cutest couple! I loved the ending of it as well, it made me so happy for them. I really liked that Hikaru's identify wasn't just dropped, it was kept and continued to the end of the series.

Haruka standing up to his parents is a high light for me.

Everyone deserves to be loved, supported, and appreciated by their partner which they both seem to do.

What a ride!!! I'm so happy Hikaru learned to love and accept himself in the end... Haruka, too. They both needed each other and grew together in the best way. I'm so glad I didn't give this one up. Definitely worth the read. 🥰

Cute ending - 3.9. My only critique would be that I feel like it needed one more volume to wrap up loose ends.

A cute and well rounded ending for a cute and well rounded series. It’s been sweet watching this story unfold and I was moved by the author’s note at the end.
