What a book. If you're looking for a fantasy book that is in the YA genre but with great, well developed characters that feel real this is for you!

Without giving away spoilers I thought that the magic system was one of the most unique ones I've read, and I'm really interested to see where it goes next.

My only complaint is that I wished it was longer! Can't wait for book 2!

Loved this book! The descriptive writing immediately captured my attention and immersed me in Allagna. Without spoiling too much, Issanka's journey constantly played with my expectations and kept me hooked.

Strongly recommend for anyone interested in an intriguing YA fantasy novel with beautifully immersive settings and a fun magic system.

I need book 2 ASAP!

Road to Freedom by Gabrielle Davis is a YA high fantasy book following protagonist Issanka, an unnamed girl living on a society where her kind is killed. After a series of events, Issanka finds herself entangled with the very people that hunt her kind and is thrown into high class politics, while trying to keep her identity hidden. Ross to Freedom is filled with political intrigue, found family, and a unique magic system and was truly unlike anything i’ve ever read.

I really liked Issanka as a character, she was very fleshed out and all her actions felt very true to herself. There is also a cast of other characters, each of which are very unique to themselves, my favourite being the commander, Hyanne. I love that Gabrielle Davis wrote about women in power and being that ones that led the armies. It was so refreshing to see women not having to bow down to men or be preserved around by them.

The only downfall of this book in my opinion, is the length. Road to Freedom is roughly 250 pages and while we love a quick read, I think the page count hindered the ability for the story to play out how i’m used to as the pacing was a bit off for me. I would’ve loved if this book was a couple hundred pages longer so I could be more immersed in the story as I think there are some scenes could’ve been added or made longer.

I want to start this review off by saying every character in this book was SO shady. And embarrassingly, the only one I called out to the author about being sus, was the character who ended up actually being trustworthy (at least for now???)

This book was packed full of plot twists, scheming, and intriguing magic elements. A YA fantasy read with found family, and a tonne of morally grey characters.

The landscapes and cities were so beautifully described that I felt like I was right there. The one critique I would have for this book is that just based of the descriptions, I could probably draw up the cities - but I couldn’t tell you what the main characters looked like 😅 Maybe I’m too used to Romantasy books where they talk about the love interest’s eye colour every chapter hahaha, but I kinda struggled to remember what everyone looked like.

I loved the FMC Issanka, she was badass but still flawed - and the last few chapters?! 😱 eeeep absolutely wild!? So much was happening & I’m so excited to what’s in store for her next!

I recommend this book to anyone who’s a fan of a good ol stabby FMC & enjoys books that keep you guessing 🗡️

Thank you Gabrielle for sending me this ARC to review 🖤

WOW!!! First of all, thank you Gabrielle for sending me this book. 🤍

First off, this book is very much YA and so i was expecting quite a happy friendship exploring book, but i was NOT prepared to have trust issues after it😂

If youre into:
-dystopian vibes✅
-magical/fantasy✅
-FMC being a badass/stabby✅
-spy missions/quests✅
-shady people EVERYWHERE✅
-political/ better than or less than✅

You’ll thoroughly enjoy this debut book like i did!

Issanka is one badass FMC. Love love love her! I was thoroughly engaged and intrigued with learning about her. Also the MAGIC?! The way its crafted?! Absolutely amazing. The way she dealt with betrayal?! I really hope she grows more and we learn more of her upbringing too!

The plot twist, whilst some were predictable, there were some where i felt blindsided. The last fee chapters i was shocked bc i need ANSWERS. I need the next book!! I will say the description in this book and the landscapes were maybe a too detailed whereas i felt there may not have been enough for the characters and their development. When i was reading the first few chapters there were constant use of metaphors as well.

Overall, i thoroughly did enjoy this book even though it maybe targeted towards a younger audience!

Political based fantasy, needed to have my brain 100% working to read! The glossary at the front was super helpful with the ranking system. I’m really intrigued by the unnamed and want to learn more about the Issanka’s abilities. Alexi was my fave so hmmmmmmmmm ….. keen for the next!!

4.2 (random number I know but it FEELS RIGHT)

Another Aussie author read! I was excited by the blurb of this book but also a bit unsure, as YA reads can be hit-or-miss for me. I've read some amazing ones—but I've also encountered a few that felt too simplistic. However, this book was fantastic! It's a well-crafted 250-ish-page read. Gabrielle managed to deliver an impressive journey, vivid visuals, and a gripping plot within what I consider a shorter book.

To sum it up, this book is the perfect Fantasy YA. Great writing and an excellent story!

≻ PACE & WRITING
I am very impressed with the writing! Gabrielle struck the perfect balance between withholding just enough information to keep you curious and giving enough to keep you hooked. From the very first page, I was intrigued and eager to find out what was happening. Her descriptive writing was spot on, providing vivid visuals for most of the story, and the book itself flowed effortlessly.

I particularly appreciated how Gabrielle demonstrated the protagonist's powers instead of outright explaining them. This might seem minor, but I loved how the writing took us on a journey, allowing us to piece things together throughout the story.

≻ CHARACTERS
Strong-willed, street-smart, yet underestimated female main character? Perfection. While the characters might not be necessarily relatable, they are captivating to follow on their journey. That's my opinion, anyway.

The entire vibe of the characters is quite mysterious. You never really know whose side anyone is on, making you suspicious of everyone at some point.

≻ PLOT
The plot was intriguing. It turned into a bit of a mystery read, which was a cool surprise. Much of the main character's journey seemed to fall into place by chance and others' decisions rather than her taking deliberate action. I did get a little lost about the plot's intention in the middle, which I think stemmed from the main character not choosing her path from the start. However, as the story progressed, her purpose and drive became clear.

Alot of plot twists which we love <3

The setting was medieval, and the story touched on themes of social hierarchy, stereotyping, assumptions based on class, and the underestimation of the lower classes.

This book was kindly gifted to me as an arc by the author.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing was highly descriptive and evocative the entire way through.

The story is about Issanka an “unnamed” and therefore lowest ranking member of society. A group of people who typically don’t last to adulthood. Issanka however has survived by being noticed by a citizen who can make use of her (and her rarely seen magic system of bending light and shadows, and capturing and projecting sound). She was put to work by this citizen as a pretend and illegal mestidios (a soldier) for his political gain, and under a promise that one day he would raise her to citizen by putting in the word with the king. This essentially would allow her to live freely out of the shadows. However he doesn’t do this. Because he’s a c@nt. But also her best friend tries to save her when she is outed as an unnamed and likely to be sentenced to death. This causes his place among the victorious march (the band of highest ranking mestidios) to be taken by issanka because the commander Hayenne is also a c@nt. That ends their relationship. However, Issanka is taken under wing of twins Âme and Alexei. They are lovely, but Issanka Havin been betrayed many times and having feared for her life all her life doesn’t know if she can trust them. And so begins a journey to Ewelle to confront the king with the victorious march and end a long term war. But things aren’t what they seen in Ewelle and Issanka needs to choose her loyalties and beliefs and morals and values and choose who to stand with, who to trust, and what actions to take. And all this amidst confusion over who is doing what, lies, deceit, treachery. She only knows part stories, only sees what people want her to see and this is the beauty of this YA fantasy. Because honestly, how much do we really know about the people we choose to stand with and fight for?

This story is worth it. It is really great. I would say my biggest gripe is some of the expressive writing is TOO much or while descriptive isn’t useful. Like, it lets me know what’s going on but doesn’t add to the sense of atmosphere. For example when describing a battle scene she mentions blood like fabric in the process of dyeing. But to me this makes the blood seem like it isn’t terrifying but rather purposeful, maybe more faded or transparent. This is one example where the choice of descriptor felt like a throwaway rather than used to not only describe what is being seen, but to also evoke a feeling or atmosphere about the place or situation. If she wanted to describe lots of blood she could just have easily stated : there was blood everywhere. So much blood.

Anyway. I really loved this. I truly think the magic system is incredible and believable. I haven’t seen this sort of magic before and to have it in a world where others are normal but hold the social power over the magic ones. This was so different from other fantasy. But makes sense. And there were incredible lines in here about power. Eg “being called something by the leaders in this world does not mean you are what they say. Pirate or Casta or unnamed. Labels are more often used to prejudice than to identify.” (Pg. 239)

This is like a coming of age story. But rather than about doing all the things teenagers do to become an adult this is about a teenager coming to an understanding about life and others and what it means to choose.

I really really loved it.

Issanka has been trained as a spy from a young age. With no family, caste or social standing, she finds ways to blend in with those around her. She also has the ability to draw from light and shade to really merge with the shadows and be completely unseen by those around her.

After an unexpected deception and a one sided trial, that would otherwise sentence her to death, Issanka finds her life spared. Instead, she must journey the country with the King’s army and one of the most feared commanders. Along the way she realises things are not always as they seem and that there are very few people she can trust. Also, that she has much to learn and that the alliances around her might be deadly.

Davis has created a magnificent world full of power battles, alliances, and a caste system that stacks everything up against the main character, Issanka. The world building is structured through the caste system, creating a setting for the reader to become completely immersed within. Davis cleverly sets the scene for Issanka using these two strategies, but also gives her a hidden strength that works in her favour; magic drawn from the shadows. This special solitary power is both a blessing and a curse as Issanka soon discovers along her journey.

The situations in the story changed continuously ensuring a fast paced, action packed storyline. The writing style flowed easily making this a terrific, page turning read. Road to Freedom is a perfect blend of mystery, magic and mayhem. Suitable for a 12+ readership.

Road to Freedom is a young-adult fantasy novel set in a dynamic, historical setting full of artfully cultivated intrigue and morally-grey characters.

Gabrielle invites the reader to immerse themselves in the world of Allagna with her deft and vivid writing style, and the book is a delight to read. The excellent world building particularly stands out, and I found myself wishing more of the novel explored the many groups and institutions which framed the story's setting and captured my imagination.

The protagonist Issanka's story is compelling, and her unique magical powers are creative and full of potential. She's an interesting character to follow - an underdog figure that is likeable, but still figuring things out. There is a nuanced approach to many of the classic themes present in the novel, and Gabrielle's voice as an author is refreshing and engaging.

Though certain sections of the book felt comparatively a little less bewitching, the culmination of the story was fast-paced and absolutely impossible to put down. The resolution (or at least partial resolution) of much of the intrigue built up throughout the novel is captivating and left me eager for more.

Thank you Gabrielle and Hawkeye Publishing for my ARC copy. I look forward to reading the book again in physical form!

“We often cannot see the truth about those closest to us until it is too late.”

In a world ordered by caste to be caste-less or Unnamed is a death sentence and yet Issanka has survived by using her powers over light and sound in the service of her master. For years, she has remained under the radar and avoided becoming involved in citizen business. However, when she is forced into serving the King through his Victorious Army, Issanka finds herself in unfamiliar territory where she is not sure who she can trust, or if she wants to get too close to anyone. Can she survive the treachery and intrigue of the new city she finds herself in?

This was such a gripping fantasy adventure with an incredibly engaging main character. The world that Gabrielle Davis has constructed is intricately woven, without being too overly complex and the magical element was unique and intriguing. The writing really pulled me in and took me along on Issanka’s journey which was as much about discovering her own strengths as it was about overcoming treachery and betrayal.

I loved the various side characters that were introduced as well, including Hugo and Alexei and with the way the story ended I am hoping that we see more of Issanka in the future.

Review: Road to Freedom by Gabrielle Davis

Gabrielle Davis's novel Road to Freedom is a captivating debut that introduces readers to the resilient Issanka, a caste-less urchin who defies societal norms to become a formidable spy. Set in a meticulously crafted world where castes, systems, and magic intertwine seamlessly, Davis's world-building is complex, immersing the reader in the exciting realm of Allagna. Despite not typically reading fantasy, I adored this novel and wished I could spend a day wandering around this new world.

Issanka's struggle for survival in a society that despises her existence immediately earns the reader's sympathy. Each character, whether ally or adversary, is depicted with humor and humanity, making their journeys compelling and engaging.

Davis's ability to blend rich, imaginative settings with compelling character arcs marks her as an author to watch in the years to come. I highly recommend this novel to lovers of fantasy and good fiction alike. ✨ Would 100% recommend

It was wonderful to spend time in Gabrielle Davis’s masterfully created fantasy world. There were shady characters aplenty, and cleverly intertwined twisty surprises throughout.

Road to Freedom is beautifully written, brimming with luscious, descriptive language that made me feel like I was part of the story. Main character Issanka is likeable, strong and determined. It’s lovely to see these characteristics explored in a female protagonist.

Davis also walks a beautiful line between action and warmth; with war, politics, a genius caste system and a little hint of romance too, which was a lovely touch.

The last part of the book had left me hanging and wanting more. Oh, and I want main character Issanka’s powers – a clever and intriguing part of the story!

My favourite line: ‘She winced as the bath water set fire to her wounds.’ And also, (I had so many and could only narrow it down to two), ‘She pictured herself as a stone between the rushing stream of footsteps.’

If you enjoy a story where you have no idea which characters to trust (if any,) you are going to love this book. I spent the whole time not trusting anybody, including the main character, Issanka.

I won't spoil everyone as to whether I was overly suspicious or not ;)

This was a highly enjoyable high fantasy with very thorough world building. Though it did take me a while to get the caste system straight in my head, despite the cheat sheet at the beginning of the book. The twists were satisfying and the mysteries mysterious. And while the ending did clear up the major issues that the climax brought, there are still plenty of plot points left unfinished to make me want to read the next book.

In conclusion, I would definitely suggest you pick up this book and give it a try. I know I will be waiting impatiently for the sequel!

This was a fantastic YA fantasy adventure read! Like any good fantasy book, it took me a little while to wrap my head around the names and places but once I did I couldn't put the book down. I am shocked that this is a debut novel, the writing was superb.

The pacing was great and kept me entertained without dragging out and losing my attention. The only thing I would have changed was some more back story. It would have been nice to have a bit more of an understanding of the previous war that was discussed in the book.
I adored the FMC and felt for her as she dealt with her struggles of being the outcast and having to keep secrets from the rest of the world to keep herself safe.

I love supporting indie Aussie authors and I am so glad I got to read this book. I look forward to reading other work by Gabrielle.

If you want a suspenseful fantasy complete with morally ambiguous characters, action-packed magic scenes and political espionage, then you've found the right book!

Road to Freedom is your classic fantasy filled with the usual epic fight scenes, interesting magic system and complex world, yet it manages to bring a fresh twist with a hearty dash of grittiness and suspense. What starts as a reluctant journey-quest for our protagonist Issanka quickly turns into a mystery which kept me guessing until the very end. Throughout, Davis has masterfully sprinkled tidbits about her world, its history and politics and magic, peppering the interpersonal drama and vivid scenery with tasty morsels which left me wanting more. Davis has laid all the foundations for a great fantasy world and series, one which I'll be impatiently waiting for the next instalment in!

Road to Freedom is a refreshing take on a YA fantasy with world building and characters unlike anything I’ve read before. The authors writing style was great and I really appreciated the attention to detail as it made it much more of an immersive read. A standout for me though was the mystery aspect of the plot. The suspense, coupled with a handful of suspicious characters kept me guessing the whole way through. Isaanka as the FMC was easy to connect with - fierce yet incredibly vulnerable, I found myself really empathising with her situation as an ‘unnamed’. While slower paced in some aspects, this all culminated to an action packed ending and a cliff hanger that has left me interested to know what happens next!

Thank you so much to Hawkeye Publishing and Gabrielle for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review!

First off, I would like to thank the author, Gabrielle Davis for sending me a copy of her book!

One of the very first things I noticed was the writing. I’m obsessed, to say the least. The writing and narrative was so alluring and descriptive, that I felt like I was in the story right alongside Issanka.

I’ve recently stopped reading books with the found family trope because I felt most of them aren’t written well, but Davis entwined it so beautifully and moulded it throughout her book that I might just become a fan of the trope again.

ALSO, a few characters in this book gave me serious trust issues cos boyyy did they have ulterior motives, BUT it definitely kept me on my toes!

This just makes me excited for what the author has in store for the next book! I can’t wait!!!

Immersive, well-paced and utterly captivating, 'The Road to Freedom' is a young adult fantasy masterpiece that will transport you to a unique world, featuring a brutal caste system and intriguing political conflict. Davis has woven a tale that is as rich in detail as it is thrilling in adventure, with a narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The world-building is phenomenal. The imagery is vivid and evocative, painting a picture of a world that is both familiar and yet utterly unique. Protagonist Issanka is a talented yet complicated heroine, with humble beginnings, whose journey is suspenseful and inspiring. The story is full of plot-twists and morally ambiguous characters, that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Highly recommended! Cannot wait for the next book!

What an intriguing young-adult debut Road to Freedom by Gabrielle Davis is. It has such an intricate storyline that weaves its way through fabulous world building and a complex dystopian social hierarchy. I really enjoyed it!

Set in historical France, the story centres around Issanka, a caste-less orphan who has the ability to manipulate light and sound. She uses shadows to her advantage to keep herself hidden. When utter betrayal strikes, political intrigue and a host of morally grey characters force Issanka to move out into the light where exposure to her magic keeps friends close but her enemies even closer. All of this combined make for a compelling and gripping read.

I loved Issanka, but gosh a felt sorry for her. She was an underdog who was used and betrayed by those she thought she could trust. She had to fight for what she believed was right and forge her own destiny.

What a pleasure it is to be asked to be an arc reader. Thank you Gabrielle for the opportunity.
.
Road to Freedom is a beautifully written novel, it remains a landscape of constant sunset in my mind’s eye. Gabrielle has created a world of beauty and intrigue, with a badass MC and shady characters abound.
.
I felt my heart leap when she first introduced Issanka’s powers and waited impatiently for the moments she would utilise them. The description of weaving light and pulling shadow felt like a metaphor for Issanka’s struggles to be seen and accepted. A struggle I found an easy connection to.
.
It was an honour to be thought of as an arc reader. I hope you’re taking time to live this dream of authorship. I wish you all the best and will be awaiting the next novel you bless us all with.

I was honoured to have the opportunity to receive an ARC of Road to Freedom from the author herself. I really enjoyed this book. It took me longer to read than normal due to having a newborn but this was my first book finished in 2025 and I started the year strong.

I enjoyed the world building and Issanka's journey kept me hooked.
I was a little confused by the world's caste system at first and I'd have flipped to the guide at the front more if I'd had a physical copy while I figured it out. But after a few chapters it started to make sense in my brain.
I liked the magic system and found it really interesting. I also enjoyed the descriptions.

I look forward to future works by Gabrielle and perhaps we'll even be treated to a sequel in future.

OKAY. SO.
This book was so much more than I imagined it to be. It's not your usual, fluffy YA fantasy. It's dystopian vibed with politics, a badass* FMC and a whole bunch of twists and turns within the characters.

I absolutely loved the World building in this book. It's not a fast paced, super action type book, but I feel like this may come in Book 2 considering THAT ending 👀

This is marketed towards YA, so smut girls, there is none to be had in this book, but give it a chance. Switch your brains on, read the glossary at the start because there is some names/indentities of characters you need to keep fresh in your head whilst riding, otherwise you may get lost! But I totally got lost in this world 🫶🏻

Issanka, a badass female assassin with the power to control light, sound, and shadows, leads a thrilling narrative filled with unexpected twists and turns. The level of detail in the world-building is exceptional, making every scene vivid and immersive. Initially, I found myself needing to reread the beginning to fully grasp the complexities of this universe, but once I did, I was hooked until the end.
The unpredictability of the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat, constantly questioning who to trust. The suspense and intrigue are masterfully woven, ensuring a thrilling reading experience. An intriguing and well written YA story full of magic, political intrigue and interesting characters.

The scenery descriptions are amazing and the magic is very interesting, I can't wait to learn more about it.

One of the characters I was very suspicious of but turns out I was wrong and I actually really like them!
And a character I liked in the beginning, I ended up not liking them!

The book is full of plot twists, there's one twist at the end that I didn't see coming that shocked me!

Also part of that ending hurt me 😢

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I can't wait to see what happens next!

What a very well written book this was. Took me a while to get my hands on it but it was worth the wait.

Was in a bit of a slump from a bad read and this has scooped me right back out.

A ya fantasy, there is a second book soon to be out and I cannot wait to get my hands on it to see where this story goes.

The writing was very vivid so I felt like I was inside the book. Gabrielle’s writing is absolutely fantastic.

Not a huge book only took me two days to devour but it was near to impossible to put down. Work and sleep always getting in the way. Definitely worth the read if you like fantasy books.

The writing flows beautifully, with just the right mix of heartfelt moments and inspiring messages. I found myself smiling at the character's progress and feeling genuinely proud of how far they came. It's one of those books that leaves you feeling motivated and lighter when you finish.
An inspiring, feel-good story about courage, change, and believing in yourself!

I loved this book!
I don't usually read this genre, but this book had me enthralled. I loved the poetry of the language. The world was painted so vividly that I was completely immersed and the people of the book were interesting and complex. The intelligent storyline led me on a fulfilling journey - I had to reschedule other commitments as I didn't want to leave the characters hanging while I did other things!
I am holding my breath for the next book from this young author. Please keep writing!

I was fortunate enough to attend the launch of Gabrielle Davis’s, Road to Freedom, where I listened to her share her personal journey in crafting her first book, and eagerly picked up my copy to read. While not my usual genre, I was completely taken in by the story, characters and beautiful prose. It is a perfect weekend read, full of intrigue, magic and surprise. My only comment is that it wasn’t long enough and I was left with wanting more. Good thing that it’s the first of a trilogy so I’m looking forward to the release of the second in the series. Fingers crossed it will be soon.
