This is book three of the Gray West Mystery series and picks up with Gray having gotten her youngest daughter Ruthie back from danger, but may now have lost her oldest, her son Abel, who has gone back to the cult her husband controls, to try and get his pregnant girlfriend Bethany safely away, before his father marries her himself. Gray had escaped from her husband’s clutches at long last, only a few short years ago, with her two young daughters Ruthie (8) and Olive (12), after her husband started to arrange a marriage for Olive, but left behind her eldest, Abel, knowing he was too much like his father not to betray their actions and escape plan. Men rule in the congregation of the Garden Temple, with her own husband Jeremiah calling himself a prophet, and taking her for his own wife when she was only fourteen and then taking on two more sister wives, Naomi and Lydia. A phone message from Bethany worries Gray more than she can let her daughters know. It said that it was time for them all to return to Eden. From that message, she is worried that Jeremiah is planning to have all of the two hundred strong congregation prepare for their next life in Eden, but none of the women in the compound have any knowledge as to where the location for this final step was to take place.
Her own daughters suggest she asks Detective Orion Boone to help her again, as he did when Ruthie was missing and with the worries about it being her former husband. Jeremiah now knows where she lives and the new name she had taken to hide them away from him, and he wasn’t happy with her for leaving him, when he visited two days before, after she had sent the police to question him at the compound, believing he might have taken their daughter. She knew he was a dangerous man, but not what might possibly do to cover for all the evil he had done and all the laws he had broken, which could have seen him imprisoned for life. It’s up to Gray to stop her former husband from whatever madness he has planned, before it is too late! Boone offers to help her immediately and Gray leaves her daughters with a friend and neighbour, to travel out to the compound she spent so many years at. What they find is not exactly what they expected and leaves more questions and worry for her, as she tries to save her son! Discoveries of the lies her husband told her over the years and how he manipulated her very life, leave a disturbing path to follow in the next book. I loved how close Gray and Boone got in this book and how he helped her at every step, to discover what Jeremiah was up to and to get her son back. More to come in this series and I can’t wait to see what Gray and Boone will get up to with the bombshell that was dropped by Charlie at the end of this book. A thrilling read, but which lays out all the dangers involved with cults and the damage it does to those taken in by such a dangerous, yet charismatic leader. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
