As third year begins, Kyotaro is trying to avoid being too chummy with Anna, who he is entirely too chummy with. And, as the school trip comes calling, why is Kyotaro so excited and why is Anna so… not so much?

We hit the endpoint of the second season of the anime and, much as I enjoy that version of this story, it’s pretty much an easy recommend for the manga version over the anime. The moments hit different, sure, but I just like the way this one lets you marinate in its big moments.

It’s really something to look back at how awkward I felt the first couple volumes were and realize that they were actually deliberately cringe and very deliberately juvenile. This is a manga about growing up and it is here to show all of it. I greatly appreciate the confidence it had to show its hand in retrospect.

For all that Kyotaro has grown, Adachi has steadfastly remained as immature as humanly possible. And, when Adachi finally figures out what’s been up between Kyotaro and Yamada these past volumes, he decides it’s time to prove it on the field of battle that is sports day.

There’s a ton of fun in this first half of the book. The romantic misadventures between our leads continue on and on and on, sticking with Anna’s relentless flirting and Kyotaro’s tendency to try and hide everything for her sake. Which makes sense - as we will see, Anna can sometimes get too lost in her heart and Kyotaro is the same except he gets tripped up by his overthinking.

This still works and works well because the passage of time is felt and the inexorable movement of their relationship has never really stopped. It’s constantly moving, however slow, and this series gets how to be awkward and funny in equal measure.

It also sports a fantastic supporting cast that’s big, but not overwhelming, and even new additions like the masked Ando, forever hunting for new couples to celebrate in the most embarrassing ways possible, are easily added to the cast (and Ando drove me a little nuts in the anime, but she’s great here).

But, let’s face it, we’re here to see the big moment yet again, courtesy of the trip to Nara, which also allows for some goofy deer jokes. Which is greatly appreciated - I am secretly a big fan of gags about the voracious nature of Nara’s semi-tame deer.

The drama here is that Kyotaro really actually wants to go on this trip and for poor Anna it conflicts with a big audition she’s up for. But she’s so intent on making sure the trip goes well for Kyotaro that she sacrifices one for the other.

It’s a great conflict, since it makes total sense for Anna to do that, but she also doesn’t realize that Kyotaro loves her precisely as she is and knows how important her career is to her. He doesn’t want her to change for him, which is real love in a nutshell.

Combined with ongoing drama over Ando and her plans to celebrate (read: embarass) couples all over the place and a classic anime/manga trope where Kyotaro gets stuck hiding in the girls’ room? It’s a very, very eventful trip.

Not to mention, in a lovely bit of equality, we get two very solid confession scenes that were well worth the wait. They’re so adorable and props to any story that captures the potential headache (literally) behind first kisses.

It’s an absolutely perfect summation of everything that the series has been and makes me even more excited to see what the future holds. A lot of stories would just end at this point, but there’s so much more a well-written one like this could dive into. Just because you’ve cleared one hurdle doesn’t mean the course is clear the rest of the way.

5 stars - Finally. Anna gets rewarded, Kyotaro gets rewarded, and we get rewarded for having been on this journey. One of the best stories that gets teenage feels just right in all their hideous (and amazing) glory.

Ooooooh here we go!

Actually have to says some of this volume didn't fully work for me. We're introduced to a few new characters, and wasn't a huge fan of their parts. Kind of felt boring there. BUT when we got back to the leads, and their romance grows, and finally words are said, this was mega mega cute. Now we need the first KISS!

I found the first couple chapters of this volume a little hard to follow but the remainder of it was incredibly solid. There were so many sweet moments in this one and the final pages deliver a great payoff. Can't wait to see how this story progresses now.

I really wanna give this 5 stars, tho the way the ending was adapted worked soo well that it leaves the manga feeling a bit inferior in comparison
