Aisley lost everything in a Viking attack. Now, working alongside the one man she trusts, she is ready to fight for her people—and for love.

Wessex, AD 878

Aisley’s young life was changed forever when her father accompanied King Alfred into battle and lost his life in a deadly skirmish with the Vikings. Now, almost seven years later, the Vikings are once again rallying on Wessex’s borders, and Aisley fears that her older brother may have treacherous plans to betray the king by aligning himself with the invading Norsemen. But when Aisley encounters a handsome nobleman in the market, she feels the first stirrings of hope. Though they met only once when Aisley was little more than a child, she recognizes him immediately as one of King Alfred’s most trusted men.

It has been years since Brecc has seen Aisley, but when he spots her in the marketplace, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to the copper-haired young lady with a gift for healing. Before his fledgling feelings for her can develop into something more, however, a Viking attack tears them apart. King Alfred is forced into hiding, and in a matter of days, the Saxon nation is brought to its knees. Unwilling to forsake their people, the king and his men embark on secret raids of Viking encampments. But when Aisley joins the fight, Brecc must reconcile his steadfast loyalty to King Alfred with his growing love for the king’s newest warrior.

Say hello to my new favorite book from Sian Bessey!

One of my favorite things about historical fiction is that I can learn something new, be immersed in a complex story, fall in love, and feel smarter after closing the final page.

Sian has done a beautiful job in this time period full of raiding vikings, the reign of King Edward, and immense war and conflict. I loved the enduring faith vein in the story, as people in this time would have clung desperately to their faith in order to survive. Sian has outdone herself with amazing side characters that I only wanted FULL novels from. If you've read the book you know who I am talking about!

After surviving a deadly viking attack, our main character Aisley must be brave in the face of a looming conflict while also navigating her feelings for one of the King's closest men. As she grows closer to Brec, the conflict grows and tears them apart. Aisley is an incredible main character full of unassuming power of kindness and compassion. Her romance with Brecc is very tender and sweet and I adored their interactions from the first time they meet. Brecc is everything you could hope for in a love interest and I could not get enough of his bravery, and loyalty to those he loved.

This book had all the elements of fantastic story telling! There were heartwarming friendships, enduring love, and the stakes were always high and kept me on my toes.

Absolutely what I hoped it would be.

'Bodies, bleeding and broken, lay scattered across the slope. Brecc swallowed the bile in his throat. Did the Viking chieftains ever consider the price their greed exacted?'

Wessex, AD 878 was an incredible setting for this book. Sian Bessey knows how to do her research and reading her books is like taking a step back in time and immersing yourself into whatever scene is happening.

This book is raw, beautiful and inspiring. I loved the loyalty found in these characters to fight for their king and country and to stand up for what is good and right.

The romance in this was outstanding. I felt the push and pull. These characters are in very interesting positions and those positions demand their time and loyalty. It was beautiful to watch develop!

'He turned then and met her eyes. The air between them stilled, and the background noise of men and horses and weaponry faded to nothingness. Slowly, Brecc set his spears against a tree trunk. Then in four long steps, he crossed the distance that separated them and pulled her into his arms. "I will come for you." Emotion shone in his dark eyes. "I give you my word."

If you love historical romances, this should be your next read! This is a top 2024 read for me!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: war/battle scenes, loyalty and betrayal, interesting history, death of loved ones, romance-kisses only.

Vikings, fierce battles, swoon-worthy romance, and an admirable King make this one unforgettable read! I love Sian Ann Bessey’s books. Not only do I love her gorgeous writing and sweet romance, but I learn something new every time. I loved being propelled back in time to Wessex, AD 878 and learning about the struggles of the Anglo Saxons against the ferocious Vikings. This intriguing story based on actual events kept me quickly turning the pages. I loved the age gap romance & every moment between Aisley & Brecc. It’s a must read for historical fiction & romance fans.

Aisley’s a skilled healer whose knowledge of plants and medicinal cures has saved lives. As a young girl, she never forgot the handsome nobleman who took herbs to her ailing father. Now a grown woman she meets him again as the destructive Norsemen threaten their land once more. This time Aisley fears that her brother may be in league with the Vikings. Risking her life, she sets off on a daring mission to warn the man she loves and King Alfred.

Brecc immediately recognizes Aisley and her beautiful copper colored hair in the marketplace after meeting her seven years ago. As they get to know each other better while celebrating Twelfth Night, they’re suddenly torn apart by a Viking invasion. After a discouraging defeat, Brecc, King Alfred, and his men go into hiding and plot how to take down their enemy. Brecc has more to worry about though when Aisley arrives with a troubling message and desires to join the fight as a healer. Will they survive the battles ahead?

I loved this story! I enjoyed how actual historical events and people were woven into the story. King Alfred saved England and later became know as Alfred the Great with good reason. He was not only a brilliant leader, but he was a righteous king who truly loved his people. Though fictional, I loved Aisley & Brecc! Their romance was filled with wonderful chemistry and tension. The medicinal cures Aisley employs were so fascinating. I enjoyed learning more about these along with the history.

Highly recommend this exciting, romantic story filled with action, adventure, and a touch of faith! Can’t wait for more Viking era books from this author! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book! The writing was very well done! This book takes place in 870s AD. I haven’t ever read a book in this time period before and I thought it was really interesting. It also has my husband’s favorite King, King Alfred. Which he got excited I was reading about. Aisley and Brecc are a great couple. I loved how brave they both were and how much they wanted to protect the king. One of my favorite parts was when Brecc helped save Aisley from the Vikings in the marketplace. It gave me Aladdin feels. Aisley’s brother is awful! If you like Viking stories with romance and great historical content this book is for you!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

A Kingdom To Claim is a masterpiece from the first page.
The minute we meet Ainsly we're emotionally attached. The way the emotions of the situation are woven into this story, and into Ainsly's backstory has you on the edge of your seat, wondering how things will turn out for her from page one.
Then Brecc enters the scene and steals your heart, or at least he stole mine. His loyalty to the king, his integrity, and the way he falls for Ainsly is Swoony with a capital S.
The historical aspects of King Alfred's story are woven in beautifully along with the fictitious characters. You're rooting for for King Alfred and his people, and with every pain they suffer you feel it too. The plot was spun beautifully, in the most heart wrenching way.
Don't even get me started on that ending.
That. Ending.
Was bittersweet perfection.

Side note, we need to talk about the romance. It is perfection. The first kiss is a work of art. The small romantic moments and the romantic tension is positively beautiful. I highlighted so many passages, especially everything Brecc said. (Did I mention he's Swoony with a capital S?)

I adored everything about this book, and my only complaint is that it had to end. I want more.

Romance: Kissing only
Content Warnings: Death, war, vikings who threaten a maiden's virtue

A Kingdom To Claim is an epic Christian, historical fiction novel including a captivating romance. Set in Wessex in AD 878, it blends real historical figures with fictional characters, exploring details of Sussex, England, Vikings, and intense battles. The rich historical details so well-written by author Sian Ann Bessey, are wonderfully woven into this novel.

Aisley and Brecc form a fantastic couple with each showing bravery, strength, loyalty, and support to their relationship. Aisley's skills as a healer and Brecc's excellence as a warrior add depth to their relationship, and their romance unfolds in a natural and believable way.

The Christian themes of prayer and faith are beautifully shown at just the right moments. Bessey proves her skill as a writer, drawing readers in from the very beginning and making it hard to put the book down. The novel is filled with unexpected twists that keep things exciting and suspenseful all the way through. A Kingdom To Claim is an inspiring, faith-driven, and engaging novel that fans of historical fiction will love.

I love reading historical fiction and learning more about different times and cultures. And I really love that Sian Ann Bessey is writing several books with Vikings! This one was definitely unputdownable for me! I didn't want the adventure to end and I definitely didn't want to set the book down so I could find out what happened to these characters. And the sweet love story definitely drew me in as well.

I loved reading about Aisley's healing abilities during this time period, AD 878. Very fascinating to think about what was used and done to help heal and cure ailments. That was a great addition to this story and I loved how it came into play several times.

The history of the land and the people and the battles between the Vikings and Saxon's was great to read about but goodness, I'm sure grateful that I didn't live then.

I loved the banquets and dancing and celebrations! Especially when Brecc and Aisley are in the scene together. The sweet glances and moments between them were wonderful! And had me rooting for a happy ending for these two amidst all of the chaos and turmoil.

This book is full of family, trust, loyalty, betrayal, love, battles, spies, struggles, hope and much, much more! I loved it all! Definitely one I highly recommend reading!

And can I just swoon over Aisley and Brecc's love story for moment? *Happy Sigh* Honestly, I loved it so much. It was just perfection!!! Now go read it and discover it all for yourself! Enjoy your reading adventure!!!

Content: Clean. This book has no language, nothing further than some kisses. There is fighting and battles and pillaging but the author writes it in a very sensitive and clean manor.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Started off strong but I eventually lost interest. The writing was good and the characters strong. I liked the story, but I think my mood shifted for something a little less action packed and more cozy. I'll reread this next year. Aisling and Brecc were good characters however. I'm definitely going to add this author to my list of likes. 4 ⭐

I love when I really feel the intersection of history and fiction in stories. It’s why I continually come back to the historical genre. I loved how well researched and intricate this story was and I am always here for unique historical settings.

The romance between Aisley and Brecc was really sweet. I liked that this had a little bit heavier romantic presence too. I loved how they came together and the tender chemistry between them. The romance has great tension and watching them combat outside battles only made the connection stronger. I loved both of these characters separately and together (which is always a high mark for me).

I enjoyed learning more about this time period and battles. I feel like I read a lot of Viking books but not much of the other groups that were around in this era. I loved finishing this and immediately wanting to learn more about the King and the setting and battles. It satisfied by history nerd tendencies in all the best ways.

This is officially my new favorite Sian Ann Bessey book.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Content Warnings: battle scenes and war themes, loss of life, near death experiences

I need to read more viking romances, I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I actually picked up another book by this author last year but never finished it, after reading this book I'm definitely going back and finishing the other book I started.

The romance was really sweet and the action kept the story going. I love the characters and the history. And I even found myself looking up viking music to listen to as I was reading it, let's just say that heightened my whole reading experience.

I will say that there is a good amount of violence in the story, because it is set during a viking wartime era so just be aware of that going into it.

I really enjoyed reading the author's note at the end and thankfully I did! I loved learning that a lot of the Historical timeline was true and I loved learning more about King Alfred.

This read was…amazing! This is a Christian Historical romance with plenty of tender-heartedness that also includes Vikings!! What?! Yes, I said Vikings. I’ve been searching for a CLEAN Vikings novel for a long time now and couldn’t have been more pleased with A Kingdom to Claim.

I absolutely admired Aisley, our main female character, as she was such a strong and likable character - the healer aspect was so beautiful as well. The setting in Wessex with having a king and warriors was so intense and fun! This is the exact book I’ve been searching for and I can’t recommend this enough!

What an incredible story! This was my first Sian Ann Bessey book and I am definitely going to read more. ‘A Kingdom to Claim’ is incredibly well written. It is a deeply moving story full of faith, hope, loyalty, action, romance, and a good sprinkling of humor.
Historical fiction is pretty much the only way I enjoy learning about history. I’ll do my own research when I’m done reading a book to see how much was fact and how much was fiction. I love that ‘A Kingdom to Claim’ was full of historical accuracy mixed in with the fiction character’s lives and the plot.
I loved Aisley. She was humble, brave, loyal, and kind to every one. I absolutely loved her and Brecc together. They had so much chemistry and romantic tension. I could not get enough of their scenes together!
Rheged was one of my favorite characters. His and Brecc’s banter provided some much needed lightheartedness to this book. He is the type of friend everyone needs.
Even if historical romance isn’t your usual genre, I highly recommend reading this book. You will not be disappointed!

A very exciting and romantic story set in the early Middle Ages in Wessex in AD 878.

Aisley and Brec's lives are marked by the invasion of Vikings and war with them. There is treason and violence, repeated attacks and all the loss that results from that war.

Aisley has lost her father and Brec is trying to keep King Alfred safe after another attack, trying to rally men to help them fight, and trying to keep enough food and supplies away from the Vikings.

I really enjoyed this historical set in a time about which there aren't that many books. The history of that time period was very interesting and the romance between Aisley and Brec was very sweet and tender.

Highly recommend to readers looking for a different kind of historical novel.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I liked the time line in this one. I have always found the history of England fascinating. And that is why I picked this one up.

However, this wasn't my favorite. The romance felt a little heavy handed for me. Romance, as a main genre, is usually never my favorite. When it comes to Historical Fiction there is usually more going on than just that, but I never got that feel. It was pretty much all about the ONE thing.

All things considered, this was between 2 and 3 stars. I'll round up to 3.

Sian Ann Bessey's historical romances were some of the very first closed door romances I ever read. And so when she asked if I wanted a copy of her newest book A Kingdom to Claim it was an immediate yes!

And she did not disappoint! She weaves tales with such heart, hope, faith and depth! I love that I feel like I can learn my history while still enjoying watching two people fall in love.

This one just pulled at my heartstrings in so many ways and it is totally a new favorite book!

I loved that this was set in AD 878 when Vikings were attacking and there was always danger on the horizon. I love that it isn't a setting you see often and yet Sian wrote it flawlessly.

I loved that Aisley the FMC has such a heart of gold and just wants to help her people any way she can. She is brave, honest, kind, and determined. She sacrifices for those she loves and is willing to put herself in danger to do so.

I loved the MMC Brecc. He is soft spoken but strong in so many ways. I loved his quiet confidence and that he wants to protect everyone he loves. I loved his bantering with his best friend Rheged and all his sweet things he says to Aisley.

This book totally just hit all the marks. Great romance, great setting, made me laugh, made me cry, made me swoon...just a rollercoaster of emotions in all the best ways!

If you need a wonderful historical romance that has such a unique storyline and setting give this one a try ASAP!

Great book! This time of conflict between the Saxon’s and the Vikings was so interesting. Ainsley was a great character. Very strong and courageous while also kind. I wouldn’t want to live in this time period but if the men are the way I pictured Brecc, it just may be worth it. He was a great hero. There were parts that were hard to put down but other parts that were slow enough you could stop and take some deep breaths. I would have given five stars but the ending was a little weak but still worth the read.

A Kingdom to Claim by Sian Ann Bessey

“I love the goodness of your heart,” he said.
“As I love the nobility of yours,” she responded.

Series: no

Genre: Christian Historical Romance; Medieval

Release Date: July 2, 2024

Publisher: Shadow Mountain Publishing

He is a warrior. She is a healer. Together they will fight to save their king.

A Kingdom to Claim is a book I will not easily forget, as in I will never forget. Beautifully written!

Sian Ann did a lovely job of weaving rich history with fictional characters that felt so incredibly real. The romance between Aisley and Brecc was so tender, and sweet; I couldn’t help but swoon. All the little hand touches, them taking care of each other and others, made me fall in love with these two.

The Christian themes in this were well done. I loved that Sian Ann kept them alive in this book, as King Alfred was a God-fearing and religious man, a devote Christian. His solution to the Viking problem was brilliant and I loved reading about it in this exceptional work of art. The burnt bread scene made for a humorous breath of fresh air between battles, treachery, and intrigue.

Let’s talk the suspense and war with the Vikings! This book had me on the edge of my seat and I could not put the book down because of the suspenseful situations and intense battles between the English and Vikings.

It was fascinating to read about this piece of English history, especially since I have both English ancestry and Viking/Danish ancestry.

I highly recommend this historical romance!

Content Warning: Intense battle scenes with blood (not overly descriptive and not gory), kisses only, Biblical swears used in context of their meaning, r*pe (mentioned), theft and plundering
Trigger warning: r*pe (mentioned as something Vikings do), war/battles

“For Wessex and our God,” King Alfred shouted. “For our homes and families. Hold the line!”

This book was EPIC!

This is only the second book I've read by this writer, but now I really want to go back and read every book on her backlist. Her writing style truly draws the reader into the story and makes the pages fly by!

As far as content goes, the romance was squeaky clean and oh so swoony.

The only negative language content was the use of "fool" a few times.

Trigger warnings: a few side characters die
(in a war), but their wounds are not described at length, or in a gory or gruesome manner at all, which I appreciated.

I loved how Aisley (the main female character) was interested in herbology, and that she had a kind heart and desire to help heal people despite how self-centered her family was.

Brecc (the main male character) was just an awesome character- very masculine, strong and chivalrous with a heart of pure gold.

I'd recommend this especially to teens and adults who are looking for a clean medieval tale or magic free fantasy read. These are often so hard to find, and I'm glad to have found both those things in this book.

A Kingdom To Claim was a brilliant tale of adventure, history, and love that I definitely recommend!

Thank you to the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing for the complimentary e-book I received to review through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.

Get ready to be transported to Wessex 878 A.D. with a tale of love, loyalty, and resilience in the face of relentless Viking invasions. Aisley's life was shattered by the loss of her father in battle and now 7 years later faces the looming threat of war as the Vikings once again approach Wessex’s borders.

I loved Aisley's strength and determination to protect her people as she tried to balance loyalty to her family and her king while dealing with her feelings for Brecc. I could almost feel the tension she felt between her duty to her family and her heart. Brecc also battled his loyalty to the king with his blossoming feelings for Aisley. I loved all the scenes with these two characters!

As much as I loved the budding romance between Aisley and Brecc, it was the battle between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings that had me turning pages late into the night. The action scenes are thrilling, and will keep you on the edge of your seat as Aisley and Brecc fight not just for survival but for the future of their people

One reason I love Sian Bessey's historical fiction is the way she weaves historical events into her stories; I always learn something from them. I found it very interesting to see what herbs and things were used to help heal and treat ailments during this period in time. I liked that the author included a map of the area and a glossary of terms used in the book, and the author's note section has information about King Alfred the Great. This book is a must-read for fans of historical fiction and romance.

More of a romance type of book rather than anything action based but it was an interesting story.I enjoyed the setting in King Alfred's Britain and the writing and characters were adequate just not very deep. It's maybe kind of book you would pick up if you enjoy romance in a historical setting.

I didn't know much about this book going into it other than there were Vikings involved. I was surprised and delighted to learn about King Alfred of Wessex, the only English monarch given the title "The Great."

The amount of research that went into this story is amazing; you're instantly transported to 800s England.

The romance that develops over the course of the book is epic. You feel the genuine peril as the specter of further Viking aggression hangs over every bit of the story.

This is an age of history I know next to nothing about, and I loved learning more. The author's notes at the end were a wonderful conclusion.

This is easily one of the best books I've read.

(On my Kindle since July 2024. I got to this one relatively quick!)

What a marvelous book!
I am always amazed at Sian Bessey’s ability to write using enough period and culturally correct terms without using so many I lose track of the story line. In this wonderful work you get to experience Sian’s marvelous writing style as well as her ability with language. This book is set in the early part of the reign of King Alfred, later to become known as Alfred the Great. The Vikings are attacking and Aisley’s father is responsible to lead his area into the battle supporting the king. With the loss of the battle, that took her father, an uneasy truce is achieved but it does not hold. When a Viking attack threatens Aisley, she is whisked to safety by one of Alfred’s leaders, Brecc, but more danger lies in store as Alfred struggles to rally his forces, traitors are exposed, family bonds broken, and new bonds form. A book you are sure to enjoy. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.

Oh how I enjoyed this book! The history and the setting and the characters just jump off the page into your imagination. I love how much of this book is historical fact, most of which I had never knew until reading this. Aisley is a strong character and Brecc is a great hero. As the Vikings tear apart their world these two remain strong and remember the past. I really loved the tidbits about King Alfred the Great and the real history of his strong faith in Christianity and the Lord. I thought this book did a great job in showing that and I found it fascinating. There is sweet romance that is simple and true. There is great adventure in battling against the Vikings and protecting the fellow countrymen. I really couldn't put this book down and I highly recommend if you enjoy history and specifically this time period.

Five Stars.

What an adventure! I was immediately transported to the dangerous and intriguing AD 878 time period to Wessex, where the fearsome Vikings were threatening the Anglo Saxons. This author is such a master at creating a tale full of emotion, detail, and vivid characters, and I really felt like I was dropped back in time.

Aisley knows how to heal others with plants and years later, encounters Brecc once again. Their escapades handed them not only perilous challenges, but gave me a hefty dose of anxiety. I can’t imagine losing everything and fearing constantly for my life, and I feel very blessed that I don’t have to worry about these types of unknowns. Like I said–this author is a master. But deeper within these pages, a faith-filled swoony romance emerged and that is what gave me hope to keep pushing through this beautiful and precarious account, as battles threatened and uncertainty loomed.

I loved the whole cast of characters and the exciting journey taken. I’m looking forward to more!

Content: mild+ war-type violence (not overly graphic); mild romance; mild religion

Vikings, Honor, Battles, and Christian themes. This story brought me in right from the beginning. Tugging at the heart strings, lifting your spirits with hope, and surprising you with the battles and turn of events.

Aisley has a knack for healing and cultivates this talent easily. She is in a hard place at a hard time. Vikings attack the Saxon nation and her father and brother leave for battle, when only her brother returns his unforgiving nature leads to heartless actions. After another Viking attack the king goes into hiding and as the days go by choices are made that force Aisley to choose to leave and bring vital information to King Alfred. Her strength and determination was constant.

“The last words he spoke to me were of courage. He said that we must be brave together.”

Brecc. Oh the tall dark and honorable Brecc was such a good man and his kindness knew no bounds. His instant attraction to Aisley made my knees weak. He was Loyal to King Alfred and he was brave and wise beyond his years. I loved his goodness

“I give you my word that I will always speak the truth to you. And to that end, you must believe that not once did I approach you out of pity.”

Their connection was beautiful, the love and goodness palpable. Through the many battles and near death experiences they kept coming back to one another and I loved how they prayed for each other often.

“I asked you to join me in the Carole because not only did I wish to dance with you above all the other ladies in the great hall, but I also wished to dance with you above my normal desire to remain seated.”

I have to take a minute and note how much I loved Nyle, the Fishmonger and how he saved Aisley. And young Taber. His selfless actions still warm my heart!

“Bless you, Taber”

“I love the goodness of your heart,” he said. “As I love the nobility of yours,” she responded.

Wow! This incredible story has Viking invaders, intense battles, loyalty, betrayal, courage, faith, and love! And it’s based on real events. This was my first book by this author, I will be adding her backlist to my TBR.

Aisley is a skilled healer, both brave and strong. I loved that she chose to do right even with the danger and possible ramifications. I found the herbal cures she used very interesting. I enjoyed the banter between Aisley and Rheged. Rheged was a wonderful addition to the story. Brecc is a nobleman and warrior completely devoted to his king. I thoroughly enjoyed his friendship with Rheged. He was a wonderful leader among the men. I enjoyed seeing his become a trusted advisor to the king too. I loved the romance between Brecc and Aisley. It was so tender and sweet, even when it was full of unknowns. I loved King Alfred and his devotion to God and seeking His direction. He was a brilliant, godly leader and I am so glad I got to learn more about him.

A few more quotes:
“I asked you to join me in the carole because not only did I wish to dance with you above all the other ladies in the great hall, but I also wished to dance with you above my normal desire to remain seated.”

“And do not ever apologize for needing me to hold you.” He extended his arms to her. “Especially as it is almost certain that I share the same desire.”

“But before I leave, I wish you to know that I have fallen in love with you. I do not know when I shall be free to offer you more than my heart... ” “Since you are the one whom I always dream of at night and ache to be beside each day, I have begun to believe that I am in love with you also.”
